This paper looks at the concept of Groupthink from a summarization perspective, touching on the
symptoms and remedies with a few examples.
What is Groupthink
The concept of Groupthink was researched by Irving Janis, and this concept can be described as a
situation where the seeking of a collective group agreement, supersedes an individual action to state
alternatives, critique a position, or express an opinion that is unpopular to the group. The weakening
of mental effectiveness, reality competence and ethical decision that results from in group pressures
is also subsume by Groupthink. (Dattner, 2011, para.2).
To understanding the Groupthink concept, it is wise to look at the reasons why Groupthink occur
and the avoidance of Groupthink. The occurrence of Groupthink is evident when a group makes
unpopular decisions while placed under extreme pressure generated from the group or when ethical

Actions or decisions taken by every group member must be subjected to a critical evaluation where
the acceptance of criticism should be encouraged by the leader (Rose, 2011, p.39).
2. The encouragement of different leaders to work with different groups to answer questions or work
group ideas in a parallel approach format (Rose, 2011, p.39).
3. A member of a group should privately discuss current issues and options with trusted associates
outside the group and report reactions.
4 Assistance of an outsider as an expert should be done in order to challenge the opinions of the core
members.

The Woodstock Music Festival is the most famous 1960s rock concerts, made by four promoters
who did not know what exactly they were doing. Even with no experience they still managed to
create an impressive masterpiece of a concert that truly captured the feel of the 1960s, with acts by
Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. The Woodstock

A three day concert that rolled into a fourth day, involved a lot of drugs, music, and mud. It soon
became a symbol of what is known as "Woodstock Nation", which is the term used to describe
young people who distrusted authority and standard American values. In the sixties the word
"hippie" had a negative connotation to it, making this festival more frowned upon than anything.
This festival was also considered a reaction to conservative attitudes of post World War I.

The traffic surrounding Woodstock was insane. On the Friday morning of the festival by 7 am there
was already traffic everywhere within a mile of the venue. After a few more hours there was traffic
jams up to 20 miles outside the venue. The police reported an increasing number of abandoned on
the shoulders of the highways as people decided it would be easier and faster just to walk to Bethel.
Before the festival even started an estimate of the people in the surrounding area and on the festival

One of the most colorful music legends of the 1960's was Janis Joplin. Blues legend Janis Lyn
Joplin was born on January 19th 1943, the eldest child of parents Seth and Dorothy Joplin. Janis was
born and raised in the small Southern petroleum industry town of Port Arthur, Texas. Her father was
a canning factory worker, her mother a registrar at a local business college. Her non–aberrational
upbringing coupled with the atmosphere of Port Arthur at the time; generally restrictive, intolerant,
and unnurturing must've made even Janis' early childhood difficult. By all accounts, however, Janis

By the time Janis graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1960, she had already decided
she wanted to be a singer, and left home. At first, Janis found work in the country and western clubs
of Texas, also singing folk songs for very little money. Her ultimate goal in doing this was to raise
enough money for a bus fare to California. She played the folk circuit around Austin for a short
while, and then left for San Francisco. In the summer of 1965, Janis returned home to Port Authur
for a year to question her life direction. Drugged–up and burned–out, she attempted unsuccessfully
to conform to a "straight" lifestyle. Then, a fed–up Janis headed back to Austin, where she had
previously experienced such hostility, and stayed there for a further seven months before she was on
the move again this time to San Francisco, where the next, and most important, chapter of her life
was to begin.
By 1967, Janis had joined Big Brother and the Holding Company and hit the big time, or at least,
had established a healthy following locally. Albert Grossman, arguably the most influential and
important entertainment manager of the era, showcased them. Thanks to him, they secured a three–
record deal with Colombia Records. The band played at Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium and, at
the Monterey Pop Festival, California, where Janis gave a legendary performance. A year later, Big

Janis Joplin was another important female of the blues. She began her music life when she sang in
the choir of the church and where she showed that she could be a good performer. Those were her
beginnings as an artist. She was recognized for her powerful blues that were inspired, she rose to the
fame in the late 1960s. Then, she joined to the Big Brothers band where she was very successful as a
performer. After some time that she was in the ban she realzed that she was holded from something
better for her as an artist. As in Source 3 says "Despite Big Brother's continued success Joplin was
becoming frustrated with the group, feeling that she was being held back professionally" (Source 3–

The Time of Rebirth: Counterculture Movements Woodstock, psychedelics, and Rock 'n' Roll were
all a major point in the 1960s counterculture movement. Many icons like Janis Joplin rose to their
fame during this era. The "hippie" movement, even 60 years later, is a major landmark in history and
pieces of the past can be seen in many different ways. Why are counterculture movements so
infamous and what purpose do they serve? Do counterculture movements establish a certain
principle or are they simply a rebellion against society? I feel as though counterculture movements
take place for a reason. Counterculture movements are more than a rebellion and help bring out the
issue that everyone tends to keep quiet about. Without counterculture movements, societies would
be forced to stay within the limits of what others dictate as right or wrong. The beginning of the

Many large concerts have been hosted in the United States, but none have been as symbolic and
memorable as the three–day music and art festival that shared messages of peace and love. The
event was seen as a result of the peace movement and the emergence of the flower children, or
"hippies". Woodstock '69 was held near Woodstock, New York in White Lake, New York on August
15 to 17, 1969 and formed a symbol of 1960s American counterculture. There was a sense of social
harmony, which with the music, the large mass of people, most in bohemian dresses, and attitudes
helped make it ,perhaps, one of the greatest events of the century.

What most people may not know about the Hell's Angels is that they are all about technocracy and
have an obsession with order. Technocracy means an elite of technical experts who control the
society. The person who created them to be technocrats is Ralph "Sonny" Barger, an 18–year–old
kid who loved military regimentation and order and was determined to turn the Hell's Angels into a
paramilitary organization. Barger took over president of the Oakland Hell's Angels in 1958. He
transformed the club in many ways. The Hell's Angels held meetings weekly discussing new rules,

There was so much speculation as to what the band would open with for their 25th anniversary
show, and in the most spectacular fashion, they opened with one for their oldest songs, The Song
That Jane likes. To make that moment even more special, Dave's sister Jane was in the crowd
watching the show. After a stellar opener, the band was no doubt feeding off the crowd's energy. 6
songs into the set list was when the audience was caught off guard by the 1st of the 3 new songs to
be debuted that night. The 3 new songs played that night held the titles of, Samurai Cop, Bob Law,
and Bismarck. All of them were very highly received by an ecstatic crowd. The band did a fantastic
job of blending old classics in with their new age material to keep the energy up. In another
surprising turn of events, the band liberated 2 songs that had not been played in years, the 1st of the
2 being a fan favorite, Sugar Will, and the 2nd being the legendary song, The Last Stop.
Dave Matthew's Band played an incredible show that night in Charlottesville, and not a single fan
left the building smiling. 25 years later the band is still putting on one of the most exciting live
music performances of any touring band out there. With 2017 being the band's 1st year off in 25

In a world of political discourse with racism and hate running rampant, a few great men and women
came together to bring unity and harmony like never before: in the form of massive music festivals.
In the late 1972, the black community came together for a concert known as Watts Summer Festival.
In 1969, the largest music festival of its time was held, and was known as Woodstock. Later that
year, the Rolling Stones put together a massive free concert in San Francisco known as the Altamont
Concert. All of the concerts and music festivals were not aimed at making money or becoming

The concept of groupthink was brought on by social psychologist Irving Janis in 1972. Groupthink
is when a group is required to make a decision, and under that pressure, unifies to make one that can
appear as unanimous of that group. The fact that there is a necessity to come up with a solution or an
organized decision makes it so some members of the group will simply go along with the view of
the majority. The pressure from the group causes there to often be questionable choices or outcomes.
The results of groupthink could be risky or irrational in the rush of the thoughts coming to their
actual real–life manifestation. Irving Janis emphasized that there are eight symptoms of groupthink,
and a few of which are present almost always. Groups allow for encouragement and can lead to
more extreme actions being carried out. Members of the group disregard any obvious signs to
abandon a dangerous notion, and they have little consideration for ethics and morals that do not fall
into line with their own. Groupthink incorporates stereotypes that the group may hold into their
decision making. Members that might not otherwise think in such specific ways, are more likely to
conform to the entirety of the group because of the power that lies in numbers. Members of the
group are unlikely to go against any of the group's views and will result in them becoming more
complacent and agreeable regardless or

Drugs and Rock and Roll Beginning with the late 1960's counterculture in San Francisco, music and
drugs will forever be inter–linked. Hippie bands such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers,
and Phish are associated with marijuana, mushrooms, and LSD. Modern electronic "rave" , or club
music is associated with MDMA or Ecstasy. When one thinks of rock and roll, sex and drugs
immediately come to mind. While the use of drugs is not essential for the creation or performance of

Psychedelics, and drugs in general became such an important part of life during the 60's that it's
influence was inescapable. Nowhere can this fact be seen more clearly than in the music of the time.
The most obvious influence drugs had on music can bee seen in the lyrics. Drug references abound,
be it Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" of marijuana smoke, or the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with
Diamonds", obviously referring to LSD. Even the names of the bands were drug inspired, as
Garofalo points out in reference to the Doors: "The group took it's name from Aldous Huxley's The
Doors of Perception, a book about the liberating aspects of drug use." Even the music itself was
influenced by drugs. Take for example much of the music by the Doors. Their song "the End" is a
psychedelic journey in to the world of LSD. The slow beat and "trippy" music in the song was
probably created with the use of drugs and hence is better appreciated when heard while on drugs.
This is also true of the music of the Grateful Dead, although this can be much more clearly seen in
their live performances as opposed to their studio work. Much of their music is geared specifically
toward those in the audience who are on drugs. Hearing one of their 30 minute jams is a much
different experience on drugs, and that is the experience that they intended the audience to have.

the association of the cultural, historical, and fictional characteristics of Ragtime that critic Brian

The Giglio Festival also followed this order proposed by Bauman. It has the closing and opening
ceremony, foods that include variety of Italian delicacies, souvenirs, dance, games and also music.
All the customs and materials that associated with this festival express the identity of Italian cultural
heritage celebrated by the people there. For example, all the foods served and sold during the
festival consist of Italian delicacies, and there are also Italian folk bands playing instruments and
singing their folk songs. In addition to that, the music played can also be a personal attribute to
someone that identified its owner. For example, it is said in the documentary that there was a time
where a man used theme song from a movie called 'Rocky' because he was once a boxer.
Besides, there are no specific costumes for the spectators as it looks like the spectators from the
documentary did not wear anything specific like masks to the festival. However, we can see that the
brass band and all the men that carried the statue on their shoulder have to wear something similar.
For example, the brass band wears red hats and white shirts, while the men wear white hats, shirts
and shoes as a symbol of unity. There is also a verbal folklore present, known as a legend that talk
