Public Shaming As A Punishment
The idea of public shaming as a punishment is an idea that goes back centuries in history. In modern
times the setting of public shaming has shifted from outside in public to inside on the internet. People
are attacked and publically shamed for all to see through social media platforms such as Facebook,
Twitter and much more. The idea of media shaming is an important idea to consider and to question
about the effects that it has on a person s life. People should care about the issue because it can happen
to anyone, at anytime, from just one simple mistake. The idea of public shaming through the internet
is not an acceptable form of punishment in modern society because it can cause deep and long lasting
psychological damage, cause people to lose their jobs, and allows the perpetrators to hide behind a
screen and remain unidentified.
One of the major reasons why public shaming is not an acceptable form of punishment in today s
society is because it can cause deep and long lasting psychological damage. Usually after someone has
received their punishment they can move on with their lives but when someone is humiliated they get
psychological damage with effects that can stay with them for the rest of their lives. In the article Hide
and Seek, Neel Burton says that, Humiliation is traumatic and often hushed up, whereas
embarrassment, given enough time, can be sublimed into a humorous anecdote. What Neel is really
saying here is that although someone can be embarrassed, the

The Theme Of Masculinity In The Short Happy Life Of Ernest...
How can Hemingway make the themes in the books based on his experiences and thoughts?
Hemingway writes the books based on his experiences and thoughts like masculinity from a character
to showing his self confidence, death from alcohol which is showing the self injury, fatalistic heroism
like the character, Schatz from the book, A Day s Wait and nature from mountain and safari (Africa) in
The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber or other books.
Hemingway puts the meaningful themes and symbols through his experience and thoughts.
There are major important themes in Hemingway s books. First, men and masculinity is a main theme
that comes from Hemingway s experiences. Hemingway s heroes are often outdoorsmen or ... Show

In this research paper, I am going to show the various aspects of the theme of death in the short story.
Before the short story begins, Hemingway simply tells the story of a leopard s skeleton that is said to
lie at a high altitude on the slope of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is up to the reader to decide how to relate
this tale to the rest of the short story, but it is obvious at this point that death will play an important
role in the story. The main storyline develops around the deadly infection of Harry s leg after suffering
from a thorn scratch. He talks about death in the very first sentence of the short story, saying The
marvelous thing is that it s painless, that s how you know when it starts (Hemingway 4). As the story
develops, Harry frequently mentions his wish to die or thee way he feels that death is very close now:
You can shoot me. You re a good shot now (Hemingway 4). and I don t want to move, there is no
sense in moving now except to make it easier for you (Hemingway 8) and Can t you let a man die as
comfortably as he can without calling him names? (Hemingway 8) and Don t be silly. I m dying now
(Hemingway 8). It sounds as if Harry is giving up, not necessarily because he is a coward, even
though his wife calls him that, but more because he feels that it is more comfortable for him at this
point to lay down and die instead of waiting for a truck or airplane that will probably never arrive: I

Evaluation Of A Discourse Analytical Perspective On The...
Performance appraisal can be defined as a general heading for a variety of activities through which
organizations seek to assess employees and develop their competence, enhance performance and
distribute rewards (Van De Mieroop Vrolix, 2014, p. 159). In the article A Discourse Analytical
Perspective on the Professionalization of the Performance Appraisal Interview, Van De Mieroop and
Vrolix discuss performance appraisal interviews as interactions between managers and their
employees that can resemble a therapy or counseling session (Van De Mieroop Vrolix, 2014, p. 160).
There are two stakeholders in this appraisal form, the employee and the manager. Bob was given the
form to complete the employee comments, and then Al filled in the supervisor comments. The form
has done a good job of defining Bob s competencies as an employee. The form touches on
knowledge/know how, communication skills, work results, work style, service orientation, additional
performance attributes, and gives an overall success rating. By defining Bob s skills, abilities,
experiences, and performance levels, Al can connect B It is clear a personal development plan is
lacking in this situation. The personal development plan identifies strengths and areas for
improvement. It is meant to help an employee learn and grow. It also helps identify people with
designated potential that might benefit from additional leadership training. A development plan

Hr Role In The Military Profession
No one is more professional than I, I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of Soldiers . The NCO
creed tells us that the expectation is to be professional. What does being professional consist of? The
Army is an American Profession of Arms, a vocation comprised of experts certified in the ethical
application of land combat power, serving under civilian authority, entrusted to defend the
Constitution and the right and interests of the American people. In this essay, I will identify the
importance of the role of Human Resources (HR) Sergeant in the Profession of Arms.
As you look at the Army and think of it as a profession of Arms, you have to look at the balancing
roles of professional leaders. First, is the role of the strategic leaders, they balance the relationship
between the Army s four fields of expertise and its current and potential future operating environment.
The second area of balance is the relationship between the Army s culture and climate and its
institutional practices. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These professionals devote years of service and attend countless training classes in order to become
experts in the chosen field. I feel that as HR professionals we have the role is to educate, mentor,
develop junior enlisted members in the military, and hope they truly know we care about them. It is
our duty as leaders to always place their needs above our own and honor the uniform, pledge an oath
we took when we decided to serve as a HR Sergeant. As a member of this special profession I have
experienced frustrations when Soldier have not been informed, but have had the opportunity to
witness great Non Commissioned Officers work together to help our Soldiers with difficult issues and
situations for the betterment of Soldier, Command, and unity. This is why I believe the HR Sergeant
plays an important part in the Profession of Arms in the

Mental Endurance in Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage
Mental Endurance in Alfred Lansing s Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage
In Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage, Alfred Lansing recounts the tale of one of the greatest
successes of the Twentieth Century. Ironically, Lansing s detailed account of the 1915 Trans Antarctic
Expedition illuminates the stark reality that Sir Ernest Shackleton s expedition did not fulfill its goal.
In fact, the expedition never even set foot upon the continent that they had intended to cross. The
outstanding success of that motley crew of adventurers was in their ability to endure the harsh
Antarctic climate. Despite having their ship crushed by an ice cap, spending the dark Antarctic winter
hopelessly alone, suffering through a stormy voyage in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to endure, one must get along with himself to prevent the self pity that cripples the human
organism, and he must also cooperate with his peers unless he wants to abandon any help he might
have received from the resourceful human community around him. There it is then, Shackleton s
indefatigable trait, the positive attitude that permits people to explode through obstacles by the means
of cooperation of mind, body, and peers.
While I am not as experienced in the faculty of endurance as Shackleton was, my trials as a distance
runner have bequeathed me with a concrete idea of what endurance is. My debilitating cramps, my
slogs through mud pits that were formerly legitimate trails, and my stomach emptying wretches on the
side of the sizzling track have enstilled in me the prerequisite for a belief that what I am doing really
matters. When I fail to maintain a positive mental attitude, my exhausted legs slow in their powerful
dance; they simply refuse to go any faster as the blanket of apathy envelopes me. Although my
running horror story pales in comparison to Shackleton s epic of frostbite and starvation, the workout
early on a rainy Saturday morning in November required that I suck it up and believe in what I was
doing. I had already run three one mile repeats at a ridiculously fast rate of speed over the trail with
the biggest hill in site. When Coach asked

Authentication is a difficult task as the detection of replicated nodes is a crucial task. The sensor nodes
are not tamper resistant.
The various detection methods are produced based on the mobility models and the network
assumptions. Due to the resource constrained nature of the sensor nodes the detection methods
encountered have following limitations. The paper presents the classification of various detection
methods. Based on the mobility model also the detection methods have been classified which has been
discussed in this paper. From the discussion it is found that Efficient Distributed Detection method
suits well for detecting replicated nodes in the Wireless Sensor Networks.
The paper organization is as follows: at first the network assumptions have been discussed. Following
that various detection methods are classified and described briefly.
2. Network Assumptions
The detection methods are proposed mainly based on the network assumptions. The network
assumptions which are commonly assumed are as follows:
The communication is static.
Based on the location and the ID the replicated nodes are detected.
The sensor nodes are uniformly deployed.
The nodes are deterministic except for Random Walk based approach.
There is no simultaneous communication and also collaboration between the sensor nodes.
Identity based public key system is utilized by the network.

Strong women are prevalent in our culture. For example, Helen Keller, was blind and deaf, but still

as Harrit Tubman s detrmantion and the Sirens beautiful voices, along with the knowledge to put them

Business Intelligence And Marketing Analytics Essay

Business intelligence and business analytics... aren t they the same thing?Or are they describing
opposite processes? There are a lot of big words that get thrown around in the world of BI, and it s
easy to get lost in a whirlwind of interpretation. The diversity of opinion reflects the fluidity of how we
understand the defining language of the field. It also demonstrates that in business intelligence, one
term can mean different things to different people, depending on their business focus and their
perspective.Though it is commonly called the BI field, the number of Google searches for business
analytics have risen sharply in the past 10 years vs. a mild decline for business intelligence (google).
I went through various blogs and special interest groups that are formed around these two terms i.e.
business intelligence and business analytics. One common thing that I found is that most of them
consider business intelligence and analytics as distinct but connected tools. They described business
intelligence as a tool that provides a way of amassing data to find information primarily through
asking questions, reporting, and online analytical processes. On the other hand, business analytics take
advantage of statistical and quantitative data for explanatory and predictive modeling. Analytics
focuses on solutions oriented capabilities which create value and convert information into knowledge.
Moreover, both business

The Middle Of The Frankish Empire
In 772 C.E., the Carolingian ruler, Charlemagne (Charles the Great ) sought out to diminish a growing
threat in the north of the Frankish Empire. To clarify, the Saxons, a ferocious pagan Germanic tribe,
had expanded too close to Charlemagne s domain (Barbero, 2004). According to Einhard, the little to
no natural obstructions between the Franks and Saxons resulted in arson, invasions, and murders
committed by both sides (Einhard, 122 C.E. ). These particular events revealed the lack of security in
the northern area of the Frankish Empire (Mayr Harting, 1996), which ultimately, compelled
Charlemagne to take action against the Saxons. In order to protect the settlements and economic
factors of the northern area of his empire, Charlemagne forced the Saxons to convert to Christianity
and integrated them into the Frankish Empire, thus, eliminating the Saxon identity for self
preservation.
In consonance with Henry Mayr Harting, a medieval ecclesiastical historian, Charlemagne viewed the
Saxons as a threat to the settlements and economic factors in the north of the Frankish Empire. For
instance, located in the northern region of the Frankish Empire, on the banks of the Rhine River, were
the churches of Cologne and Mainz, which were important to the Carolingian civilization (Mayr
Harting, 1996). Additionally, Rhine played a significant role in the economy of the Frankish Empire.
Between the 780s and 820s, Rhine experienced large amounts of movement due to Rhenish imports

Essay On Mozart Effect
The Mozart Effect, broadly stated, is the idea that music can help with many other aspects of a student
s education. Its research started decades ago and is still highly debated today, with some condition to
the findings. However, in Bob Duke s article, he explains why it doesn t matter whether of not it helps
tests scores. He believes we should not be using this as an excuse for keeping music programs because
there are countless better reasons. Duke s article highly reinforced why I personally believe music
education is so important and why I can t wait to be a part of it.
The Mozart Effect theory first started with research based on the effect of music on the brain. One of
the first to test this was Gordon Shaw and his student Xiaodan ... Show more content on

The first study was done to replicate Shaw s method by testing how music affected two spatial tasks.
In this study, those who listened to Mozart had a higher average test score. As for the other study, they
measured brain wave activity within college students two times, one time after they listened to a
Mozart sonata and once after listening to no music. Lerch and Dr. Anderson stated that The EEG
recordings were somewhat correlated with the students performance, as increased brain activity was
associated with an increase in spatial reasoning performance after listening to the Mozart .
After this research, the book The Mozart Effect: Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body,
Strengthen the Mind and Unlock the Creative Spirt was written by Don Campbell in 2002. According
to Donna Lerch and Dr. Thomas Anderson of The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, his
book claimed that listening to the music of Mozart could raise your intelligence quotient.
As for Bob Duke s article, he discussed why we shouldn t base the whole reasoning for keeping music
education on tests scores. Even if music may help raise tests scores or make students smarted, we
should not be defending it in this way. Duke explains that if we continue to do this, we are basing the
whole future of music education on test scores.
In both Duke and I s opinions, there are so many other amazing reasons why we should continue
music education, not just because it has the potential to make

Unjust And Uninhibited Control In The Daily Prophet
Unjust and uninhibited control is an innate trait of bureaucratism, as a byproduct of an institution s
quest for efficiency. In perpetuation of their lack of limits, bureaucrats create survival networks across
spheres, and thus are more difficult to bring down. In regards to the Potter series, the Ministry creates
a network with The Daily Prophet. Bureaucracy knows no limits, and may take unjust actions. The
Daily Prophet publishing deceiving articles is unethical by general contemporary standards; however,
by bureaucratic definition the institution is self justifying, and defines themselves as the most rational
organization. The Ministry believes that they have proper justification in using the newspaper to their
advantage, and the newspaper plays along. In doing so, they expand past the boundaries between
public and private affairs by exploiting Harry. The Daily Prophet is the Ministry s pawn in their
obsession with order, which in itself is disordering according to bureaucratic politics. The Daily
Prophet s corrupt articles only create more disorder even though they have the goal of preventing
panic. Any time that there is a group of elites and a public, there are sure to be elements populist
politics found. This is especially true when the group of elites exercise their power to deceive the
mass. In this situation the villain in populist terms is The Daily Prophet, along with the Ministry of
Magic, for abusing their power to take advantage of their superior position to

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in gender portrayal in children s television
commercials. The hypothesis that stated, if an observed television program is determined to be
intended for girls, then the colors used in the commercials would be predominantly intended for girls,
is strongly supported. To do content analysis, we first gathered a sample of 50 television commercials
aired on children s television channels between 8 to 10 PM, then we coded each of the predictor and
criterion variables and conducted a chi square test. Our results indicate that most girl oriented
television programs presented commercials that incorporated girl stereotypical colors. Furthermore,
girls are often associated with bright and pastel colors while boys are associated more with neutral
colors.

The Endangered Species Act
These expenses are rarely tax deductible, leaving landowners uncompensated for the prohibited use of
their property. The lack of financial support from the federal government undoubtedly creates a rift
between the Fish and Wildlife Service and private landowners. Moreover, private landowners shoulder
a regulatory burden in addition to financial burden as a result of the Endangered Species Act. Section
9 of the Act outlines prohibited private landowner actions, including the taking of an endangered
species. The Fish and Wildlife Service defines a taking as the significant habitat modification or
degradation that actually kills or injures wildlife by significantly impairing essential behavior patterns,
including breeding, feeding, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Researchers believe that this difference is the result of preemptive habitat destruction by private
landowners responding to the risk of regulatory requirements, also known as shoot, shovel, and shut
up (Wilcove et al., 1996). They state that, landowners are afraid that if they take actions that attract
new endangered species to their land or increase the populations of the endangered species that are
already there, their reward for doing so will be more regulatory restrictions on the use of their property
(Wilcove et al., 1996). The probability that the Fish and Wildlife Service will detect a species
significantly increases the level of habitat destruction by private landowners, indicating that a fear of
regulation is the motivation for this behavior. One frequently referenced case involves Ben Cone, a
disgruntled landowner from North Carolina who faced heavy land use restrictions resulting from the
presence of 12 Red Cockaded Woodpecker colonies on his property. The Red Cockaded Woodpecker,
or Leuconotopicus borealis, was very populous in the sandhills region of North Carolina for hundreds
of years, inhabiting cavities in mature longleaf pine forests (Walters, 1991). Because the species was
found on his property, Cone was restricted from harvesting 1,500 acres of prime timber, worth over $2
million (Stroup, 1995). Cone became extremely frustrated with the federal government, famously

Beauty Standards For Black Women
It does not come as a surprise that women, in large, are dissatisfied with their bodies. This widespread
body dissatisfaction amongst women was coined normative discontent (Rodin, Silberstein, Streigel
Moore, 1984). Although body dissatisfaction seemingly plagues women as a whole, there are several
factors that can either serve as a protective factor or a risk factor for the development of body
dissatisfaction. Much of the research regarding this normative discontent excludes culturally relevant
factors for African American (Black) women. Looking specifically at African American women, the
factors that affect body image and body dissatisfaction greatly differ from those that affect non

may also have a light skinned woman as the successful, attractive character with a juxtaposing
character who is darker, loud, obnoxious, and often fits into the sassy sidekick trope. A popular Black
situational comedy in the 1990s, Martin, was a prime example of this (Walter et al., 1992). The main
character s girlfriend Gina, was a successful, beautiful lighter skinned woman and her best friend,
Pam, was dark skinned and often the recipient of Martin s jokes about her appearance. Exposure to
these repeated stereotypes for Black women only furthers the notion that light skin is somehow
superior to dark skin. This could mean that for African American women, having darker skin is a risk
factor for developing body dissatisfaction.

Thomas Paine Rights Of Men Essay
Korey Wiggins Mrs. Saunders AP English 3 12 February 2018 Argumentative Practice Essay Two
America a melting pot due to its broad cultural background. America welcomes everyone. But, only
the natives are welcome into society. Thomas Paine s Rights of Men is mistaken in thinking America
is a flawless country with no societal problems due to skin color or social background. Paine said The
poor are not oppressed, the rich are not privileged, The poor have always been oppressed and the rich
always have an upper hand. A rich man s name is spoke in a room and people shudder, but a poor man
s name is only known to his family and himself. Poor men have a disadvantage in money and if you

Women and anyone of color affiliated with a white man of middle or upper class. Poor men are seen
as dirty and illiterate. They can not get ahead in life because society immediately labels them

lawyer. Even in the movies anyone who is a criminal and well off they are shown with luxury prison

enough pull then you can get anything you want. Money means power and power is the only thing
anyone wants in America. To achieve the American dream you have to be ruthless. If you are poor you
have t work ten times harder than the rich white guy. If you are a black women in America you have to
have the work ethic of white and black men and white women. In our new age society there is a
ghastly amount of oppression it is unbelievable given the day and age. The American people

The First Thanksgiving Essay example
The First Thanksgiving On September 6, 1620, 102 men, women and children from England boarded
a small cargo boat called the Mayflower and set sail for the New World. The passengers left their
homes in England in search of religious freedom from the King of England. Today they are known as
pilgrims. After braving two months at sea, crossing the stormy Atlantic Ocean, the Pilgrims finally
landed off the coast of the New World. In the freezing December waters, they anchored the Mayflower
and sent a landing party to what is now Plymouth Harbor beach. To secure the small landing boat
against the rain and winds, they tied it to a large rock Plymouth Rock and so begins the legend of the
original Thanksgiving tale. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When April arrived, the crew of the Mayflower raised its sails and set off for England, offering to take
any Pilgrim who wished to return to England. Faced with the choice of the harsh New World, or the
religious intolerance of the King, they all stayed. One day, a lone Indian man walked into the
settlement. He raised his hand in friendship to the settlers. The Pilgrims welcomed this stranger named
Samoset. Samoset introduced the Pilgrims to his chief, Massasoit, and his interpreter, Squanto.
Squanto spoke English because he had been captured as a boy by traders who had come to the New
World in search of slaves. Squanto was taken to England and lived there many years before returning
to the New World. He alone understood that the Pilgrims did not know how to hunt or fish that they
would die without help in the New World. Squanto and Chief Massasoit extended their friendship to
the Pilgrims. They showed them how to catch fish with nets and how to grow corn, pumpkins,
potatoes and squash foods from the New World. The Indians showed the Pilgrims where to hunt
turkey and deer, and where to gather nuts and berries. They explained to the Pilgrims that the land was
master of those who walked and lived there. The harvest of 1621 saw the fulfillment of their labors.
The Pilgrims had grown barley, corn, pumpkins, and beans. The settlers labored to gather their bounty;

Examining the Social Indicator of Public Spending on...
A nation is defined not just by geographic borders, it is defined by its citizens. Citizens are shaped by
the goods and services that are available to them. Any governmental service costs money; therefore a
nation s economy and the spending of that money works to shape the sociological core of that nation.
But how should that money be spent? One can argue that education spending is important to a nation s
well being. During the 19th century US President James Garfield commented that next in importance
to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be
permanently maintained (as cited in McPherson, 1912, p.192). One way in which a nation s value for
the importance of education can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not everything in Oman is halcyon; there are pressing environmental issues, mainly the maintenance
of an adequate supply of water for agricultural and domestic use. The fact is that there is only 1 cubic
kilometer of renewable water resources, with 94% used in farming and 2% for industrial activity [...]
and only 30% of all rural dwellers have pure drinking water. Both drought and limited rainfall
contribute to shortages in the nation s water supply .4 As these environmental issues become more
pressing, education spending may falter as money is put towards means of alleviating a water crisis.
Culturally, Oman remains strong. Jones and Ridout (2012) make the case that the key features of
Omani social life that contribute to the formation of this culture of diplomacy...are traditions of
tolerance and non sectarianism characteristic of Islam in Oman, the well documented prevalence of
politeness as a social virtue .5 Now that we ve examined the factors which both influence and are
influenced by education spending in Oman, let us turn to Georgia.
In the Eurasian nation of Georgia, total governmental spending on education amounts to 7.7% (World
Bank, 2010). However, I argue that the low amount of this indicator is not out of apathy for the
education of its citizens, rather political unrest is the main factor. After all, the current amount of

Anglo Saxon Era
History of The Anglo Saxon Era And an Analyses of Epic Poem Beowulf The Anglo Saxon Period
was an historical era lasting for approximately 600 years, from 410 To 1066. Throughout this time
period Britain s political authority began to change drastically. Federalism, a continental social,
economic, and political system was on the rise. This system consisted of classifications such as
nobles, lords, knights, and serfs. Many of the information we now know about the Anglo Saxon era is
derived from the Anglo Saxon Chronicle , which was a year by year account for all the major events
of the time. The Anglo Saxon chronicle proves that many of the literature and art was heavily
influenced by political and life events. After the Romans had conquered the Celtic tribe of Britain, the
Roman Empire began to fall ,and Roman legions left Britain to defend Rome. The Anglo Saxons
began to invade Britain s eastern shore. Their Warriors drove the British into the mountains and the
Anglo Saxons took the land as their own. The Anglo Saxons settlers sculpted the art and literature of
this influential era. They were considered to be their own masters in the new land and they did not
attempt to keep the art and literature that was first established by the Romans. They replaced many
Roman stone buildings with new wooden structures, and began to speak their own languages , which
has heavily influenced the New English we now speak today. They also brought their own

The Information Age And The Management Information System...
The readings this week discuss the challenges of competing in the information age and the
management information system tools managers can use to help them support the business strategies.
With so much data available, there is an opportunity and advantage for companies to utilize
information systems to capture and make sense of this information. There are a variety of information
system modules that are available, including Customer Relationship management (CRM), Supply
Chain management (SCM), Human Resource management (HRMS). While they all have their own
emphasis, the advantages of each of these modules include the ability to store data, create reports that
enable management to make sense out of the data, and share this information, in real time, throughout
the organization. With good input data, information systems can provide a company with a
competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Discussion
Information systems can provide great value to all departments within a company. For customer
service, dealing regularly with the buyers of products or services, having a information system that
captures buying patterns, pricing, credit terms, and customer preferences, greatly simplifies the job,
reduces errors, speeds order processing and can create customer loyalty. For finance, information
systems enable the group to generate reports to understand product profitability, customer pricing and
terms, and more. For all departments, having access to meaningful information

Ever since we were young kids we used to believe that in times of crisis Superman would come to our

Uglies Westerfeld Character Analysis
Tally, the main character in the book Uglies , shows many changes in character or thought throughout
the book. Uglies was written by Scott Westerfeld, a New York Times Bestselling Author. In Uglies,
Westerfeld shows the reader how Tally s character changes when Peris visits her in Uglyville, when
Tally finds out David grew up in the Smoke, and when Tally visits David s parents house.
The first time a change of character in Tally is noticed is when she finds out who she trusts, and
commits to, when Peris visits her in Uglyille. This is while Tally is trying to decide whether she wants
to tell the Specials where Shay is, and turn pretty, or keep Shay s location a secret, and stay ugly for
life. Therefore, the statement Tally had it now, an excuse to break her vow. She d made that promise to
Peris, just as real, before she d ever met Shay. She had known him for years, and Shay for only a few
months shows that Tally has decided she would rather keep her promise to Peris other than Shay

What Is The Social Implications Of The Plague
In fall of the year 1347 a fleet of Genoese trading ships docked at Sicilian port in Italy. The crowds
gathered in eager expectation at meeting the newcomers and seeing what goods they were carrying.
They were utterly horrified at what they discovered. Most of the ship s crew were dead, the rest
mostly dying. In terror, the Sicilian authorities ordered the fleet out of its harbor in hopes of sparing
themselves from the same fate. It was a false hope. The Plague spread with a horrifying rapidity. It
raged across the European continent killing unprecedented numbers. In fact, it is generally agreed that
thirty to sixty percent of Europe s population died as a result or a staggering twenty to twenty five

Short Stories
The themes of short stories are often relevant to real life? To what extent do you agree with this view?
In the short stories Miss Brill and Frau Brechenmacher attends a wedding written by Katherine

reality. Likewise Frau Brechenmacher suffers through isolation throughout the story and also male
dominance is one of the major themes that are highlighted in the story. These themes are relevant to
real life as women are likely to suffer more in their life than men.

Through her actions which gives us an insight that she is emotionally isolated from her husband. Frau
brechenmacher is also socially isolated, this is portrayed when one of the lady at wedding mentions
my dear you skirt is open at the back...we could not help laughing as you walked up the room with
white tape of your petticoat showing . Also highlighted when all laughing at her because they were so
much stronger then she was . This quote refers to the point that she is emotionally weak, as she asserts
her humanity through her fear. As the women laugh at her, Frau brechenmacher feels humiliated and
betrayed by someone she expected to be united with. This theme is relevant to real life as in both the
short story women are likely to struggle more than men.
Another theme which is highlighted in the story is male dominance which is portrayed when Frau
Brechenmacher addresses Herr Brechnmacher by the father . This represents Herr Brechenmacher s
dominating character towards Frau Brechenmacher. This also shows a weak bond of understanding
between Herr and Frau Brechenmacher. Reason for Frau Brechenmacher showing her submissive
behaviour towards her husband as mentioned girls have a lot to learn . This highlights that she has
learnt her lesson too well and passes the message onto the reader to give us an insight of role of
women in early 19th century. She is used for sexual purposes as depicted in story she puts her arms

these disorders and the differences between them, this paper will attempt to inform the readers of their

The Effects Of Video Games On Our Culture Today
ABSTRACT
Video games have become a driving force in our culture today, and the effects, both positive and
negative are scrutinized on a daily basis. The violent aspects of this form of media are a cause of
concern, but to what effect remains an important question. This research proposal aims to look at a
gap in the literature on this topic by qualitatively accessing aggression and enjoyment of players based
on varying difficulty levels and numerous genre types available in the market today. The ultimate goal
is to understand if the difficulty is an additional cause for potential aggressive behavior.
INTRODUCTION
In the Entertainment Software Association s 2013 report, information on the video game industry can
summarized as: 1) 59% of Americans play video games, 2) Consumers spent $21.83 billion on video
game hardware/accessories and video games, 3) 48% of all gamers are women, and 4) 51% of US
households own a dedicated console, and those that do own an average of two. (theesa.com, 2014).
The facts speak for themselves: video games have become a significant part of our culture today, and
can also be seen internationally. I personally worked for gaming retailer GameStop for almost 8 years,
and utilizing that knowledge base, I intend to be a part of the growing industry. However, it is
important to understand that the past time so many enjoy can have adverse effects, as legal battles over
the violent content of games have attempted to argue. Various school shootings

Characteristics Of Frederick The Great
The Enlightenment is a period of time located across the world, mainly in Europe, that directly
followed the Scientific Revolution. It has been considered an intellectual movement which has
advocated for freedom, democracy, and reason. Many have also considered this time as the organized
activity of French philosophers or also known as the philosophes, who were considered an informal
society men of letters that contributed to the Encyclopedie. The Enlightenment affected the European
population as well with more rights being given to the common people, more people becoming
literate, decline in the church, and new formations of religions. One of these philosophies is Frederick
the Great, King of Prussia. Frederick was an active follower of the Enlightenment and tried to change
Prussia into an Enlightened state through some of these characteristics.
Frederick the Great was ruler of Prussia from 1740 1786. He took over from his father, Frederick
William I, who was considered to be coward and rarely got into wars. Frederick s term was during the
Enlightenment, and like other rulers, Catherine the Great, Maria Theresa, and her son, Joseph, were all
enlightened by the age and followed it. In the case of Frederick, he turned his court into a learning of
the nobility to help out. He believed that the French learning was the only main learning that people
should know, and used French influence in his castle and gardens. He was good friends with other
philosophies such as Voltaire

You are BBBY s CEO, Steven Temares. It is April 2004 and you are about to decide what to do with
the company s excess cash:
Keep it?
Pay it out and issue debt?
You structure your analysis by answering the following questions:
1. What is wrong with building up cash? Provide (at least two) reasons in favor and against keeping
cash in the firm.
Against:
By paying out excess cash and issuing debt, BBBY could improve return to equity holders and raise
earnings per share (by a share repurchase).

Evaluate the decision from the perspective of BBBY s shareholders: does the proposed repurchase
program increase shareholder s value? Provide some calculations to illustrate your answer.
The repurchase program increases the shareholder s value. This is because of a rise in the price of the
shares of the original shareholders.
●Scenario with a debt to capital ratio of 40%
Increase in share price =(11228584.26/296854) 37 = 0.825275253
Total increase in value = 0.825275253*296854 = 244986.26
●Scenario with a debt to capital ratio of 90%
Increase in share price =(11534817.13/296854) 37 = 1.856869471
Total increase in value = 1.856869471*296854 = 551219.13
The answers are both the same as the answers of question 2 (PV of the interest tax shield).
4. For both scenarios, estimate BBBY s bond rating. Comment: does levering up deteriorate the

rating to be A, because the debt to capital rating for this rating is 42.6%, so this the closest to the 40%
ratio of BBBY.

Causes Of Subway Accidents
In order to minimize the number of subway accidents, motor vehicle collisions and airplane accidents,
state and federal agencies regulate the transportation industry. If a subway accident occurs, safety
boards, inspectors and investigators are called upon to investigate the incident.
At some point, light rail, subway and commuter rail have all been investigated. Although the injuries
sustained during a subway accident are usually much less extensive than those seen in automobile
accidents, more people sustain injuries in a subway accident than in a typical car collision. When it
comes to accidents involving the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), complex
issues must be investigated and analyzed. Some issues that can contribute to an accident include
improper employee training, electrical problems and mechanical issues as well as rail concerns.
Recent Incidents Involving New York s Subway
The MTA states that in 2016 there were 168 incidents involving people being hit by a train with 48
people sustaining fatal injuries: Marking the lowest year end total for individuals fatally struck by
subways in five years. Incidents involving train strikes are broken down by the MTA into six
categories: people hit in the station (but not while standing on a platform), individuals hit while
standing on the platform, people hit outside of the station (i.e., while in a tunnel), attempted suicides,
alleged suicides and individuals who fell between the cars.

Millard Fillmore Major Accomplishments
Millard Fillmore Millard Fillmore was the 13th president of the United States, taking over the
presidency after Zachary Taylor died in office. As a result, he was the second vice president to be the

Millard Fillmore was known for being modest, even declining an honorary degree from Oxford
University, saying he had nothing to deserve it. Although he was more of a accidental president,
Fillmore did achieve some accomplishments during his administration that are widely known today.

After Zachary Taylor died suddenly in office in 1850, Fillmore took over the presidency without a vice
president. Thus, he was left to solve the conflicts that had arose between the North and South. One of
the solutions was proposed by Henry Clay, called the Compromise of 1850. Under the Compromise of
1850, California entered the Union as a free state, the Fugitive Slave Act was put into effect, the slave
trade in Washington D.C. was abolished, the border dispute between New Mexico and Texas was
settled, and the territories from the Mexican American War were left up to the people to decide
whether they wanted to be a slave or free state. Fillmore supported the compromise wholeheartedly
and hoped it would preserve the country and ultimately prevent a civil war. It did not prevent the civil
war, yet the compromise prolonged the war for another ten years. Additionally, towards the end of his
administration, he sent a fleet of ships lead by Matthew Perry to Japan to force trade relations. Once
his term ended in 1854, he ran for a second term in the election of 1856 with the Know Nothing Party,

  • 2. Public Shaming As A Punishment The idea of public shaming as a punishment is an idea that goes back centuries in history. In modern times the setting of public shaming has shifted from outside in public to inside on the internet. People are attacked and publically shamed for all to see through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and much more. The idea of media shaming is an important idea to consider and to question about the effects that it has on a person s life. People should care about the issue because it can happen to anyone, at anytime, from just one simple mistake. The idea of public shaming through the internet is not an acceptable form of punishment in modern society because it can cause deep and long lasting psychological damage, cause people to lose their jobs, and allows the perpetrators to hide behind a screen and remain unidentified. One of the major reasons why public shaming is not an acceptable form of punishment in today s society is because it can cause deep and long lasting psychological damage. Usually after someone has received their punishment they can move on with their lives but when someone is humiliated they get psychological damage with effects that can stay with them for the rest of their lives. In the article Hide and Seek, Neel Burton says that, Humiliation is traumatic and often hushed up, whereas embarrassment, given enough time, can be sublimed into a humorous anecdote. Hemingway writes the books based on his experiences and thoughts like masculinity from a character to showing his self confidence, death from alcohol which is showing the self injury, fatalistic heroism like the character, Schatz from the book, A Day s Wait and nature from mountain and safari (Africa) in The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber or other books. In this research paper, I am going to show the various aspects of the theme of death in the short story. Before the short story begins, Hemingway simply tells the story of a leopard s skeleton that is said to lie at a high altitude on the slope of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is up to the reader to decide how to relate this tale to the rest of the short story, but it is obvious at this point that death will play an important role in the story. The main storyline develops around the deadly infection of Harry s leg after suffering from a thorn scratch. He talks about death in the very first sentence of the short story, saying The marvelous thing is that it s painless, that s how you know when it starts (Hemingway 4). As the story develops, Harry frequently mentions his wish to die or thee way he feels that death is very close now: You can shoot me. You re a good shot now (Hemingway 4). and I don t want to move, there is no sense in moving now except to make it easier for you (Hemingway 8) and Can t you let a man die as comfortably as he can without calling him names? (Hemingway 8) and Don t be silly. I m dying now (Hemingway 8). It sounds as if Harry is giving up, not necessarily because he is a coward, even though his wife calls him that, but more because he feels that it is more comfortable for him at this point to lay down and die instead of waiting for a truck or airplane that will probably never arrive: I ... Performance appraisal can be defined as a general heading for a variety of activities through which organizations seek to assess employees and develop their competence, enhance performance and distribute rewards (Van De Mieroop Vrolix, 2014, p. 159). In the article A Discourse Analytical Perspective on the Professionalization of the Performance Appraisal Interview, Van De Mieroop and Vrolix discuss performance appraisal interviews as interactions between managers and their employees that can resemble a therapy or counseling session (Van De Mieroop Vrolix, 2014, p. 160). There are two stakeholders in this appraisal form, the employee and the manager. Bob was given the form to complete the employee comments, and then Al filled in the supervisor comments. The form has done a good job of defining Bob s competencies as an employee. The form touches on knowledge/know how, communication skills, work results, work style, service orientation, additional performance attributes, and gives an overall success rating. By defining Bob s skills, abilities, experiences, and performance levels, Al can connect B It is clear a personal development plan is lacking in this situation. The personal development plan identifies strengths and areas for improvement. It is meant to help an employee learn and grow. It also helps identify people with designated potential that might benefit from additional leadership training. A development plan enriches an employee s work experience. By ... Mental Endurance in Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage Mental Endurance in Alfred Lansing s Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage In Endurance Shackleton s Incredible Voyage, Alfred Lansing recounts the tale of one of the greatest successes of the Twentieth Century. Ironically, Lansing s detailed account of the 1915 Trans Antarctic Expedition illuminates the stark reality that Sir Ernest Shackleton s expedition did not fulfill its goal. In fact, the expedition never even set foot upon the continent that they had intended to cross. The outstanding success of that motley crew of adventurers was in their ability to endure the harsh Antarctic climate. Despite having their ship crushed by an ice cap, spending the dark Antarctic winter hopelessly alone, suffering through a stormy voyage in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to endure, one must get along with himself to prevent the self pity that cripples the human organism, and he must also cooperate with his peers unless he wants to abandon any help he might have received from the resourceful human community around him. There it is then, Shackleton s indefatigable trait, the positive attitude that permits people to explode through obstacles by the means of cooperation of mind, body, and peers. While I am not as experienced in the faculty of endurance as Shackleton was, my trials as a distance runner have bequeathed me with a concrete idea of what endurance is. My debilitating cramps, my slogs through mud pits that were formerly legitimate trails, and my stomach emptying wretches on the side of the sizzling track have enstilled in me the prerequisite for a belief that what I am doing really matters. When I fail to maintain a positive mental attitude, my exhausted legs slow in their powerful dance; they simply refuse to go any faster as the blanket of apathy envelopes me. Although my running horror story pales in comparison to Shackleton s epic of frostbite and starvation, the workout early on a rainy Saturday morning in November required that I suck it up and believe in what I was doing. I had already run three one mile repeats at a ridiculously fast rate of speed over the trail with the biggest hill in site. When Coach asked ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From the discussion it is found that Efficient Distributed Detection method suits well for detecting replicated nodes in the Wireless Sensor Networks. The paper organization is as follows: at first the network assumptions have been discussed. Following that various detection methods are classified and described briefly. 2. Network Assumptions The detection methods are proposed mainly based on the network assumptions. The network assumptions which are commonly assumed are as follows: The communication is static. Based on the location and the ID the replicated nodes are detected. The sensor nodes are uniformly deployed. The nodes are deterministic except for Random Walk based approach. There is no simultaneous communication and also collaboration between the sensor nodes. Identity based public key system is utilized by the network. 3. Various ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I went through various blogs and special interest groups that are formed around these two terms i.e. business intelligence and business analytics. One common thing that I found is that most of them consider business intelligence and analytics as distinct but connected tools. They described business intelligence as a tool that provides a way of amassing data to find information primarily through asking questions, reporting, and online analytical processes. On the other hand, business analytics take advantage of statistical and quantitative data for explanatory and predictive modeling. Analytics focuses on solutions oriented capabilities which create value and convert information into knowledge. Moreover, both business ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Middle Of The Frankish Empire In 772 C.E., the Carolingian ruler, Charlemagne (Charles the Great ) sought out to diminish a growing threat in the north of the Frankish Empire. To clarify, the Saxons, a ferocious pagan Germanic tribe, had expanded too close to Charlemagne s domain (Barbero, 2004). According to Einhard, the little to no natural obstructions between the Franks and Saxons resulted in arson, invasions, and murders committed by both sides (Einhard, 122 C.E. ). These particular events revealed the lack of security in the northern area of the Frankish Empire (Mayr Harting, 1996), which ultimately, compelled Charlemagne to take action against the Saxons. In order to protect the settlements and economic factors of the northern area of his empire, Charlemagne forced the Saxons to convert to Christianity and integrated them into the Frankish Empire, thus, eliminating the Saxon identity for self preservation. In consonance with Henry Mayr Harting, a medieval ecclesiastical historian, Charlemagne viewed the Saxons as a threat to the settlements and economic factors in the north of the Frankish Empire. For instance, located in the northern region of the Frankish Empire, on the banks of the Rhine River, were the churches of Cologne and Mainz, which were important to the Carolingian civilization (Mayr Harting, 1996). Its research started decades ago and is still highly debated today, with some condition to the findings. He believes we should not be using this as an excuse for keeping music programs because there are countless better reasons. Lerch and Dr. Anderson stated that The EEG recordings were somewhat correlated with the students performance, as increased brain activity was associated with an increase in spatial reasoning performance after listening to the Mozart . After this research, the book The Mozart Effect: Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Strengthen the Mind and Unlock the Creative Spirt was written by Don Campbell in 2002. In perpetuation of their lack of limits, bureaucrats create survival networks across spheres, and thus are more difficult to bring down. In regards to the Potter series, the Ministry creates a network with The Daily Prophet. Bureaucracy knows no limits, and may take unjust actions. The Daily Prophet publishing deceiving articles is unethical by general contemporary standards; however, by bureaucratic definition the institution is self justifying, and defines themselves as the most rational organization. Liuyi Bian University of Florida Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in gender portrayal in children s television commercials. The hypothesis that stated, if an observed television program is determined to be intended for girls, then the colors used in the commercials would be predominantly intended for girls, is strongly supported. To do content analysis, we first gathered a sample of 50 television commercials aired on children s television channels between 8 to 10 PM, then we coded each of the predictor and criterion variables and conducted a chi square test. Our results indicate that most girl oriented television programs presented commercials that incorporated girl stereotypical colors. Furthermore, girls are often associated with bright and pastel colors while boys are associated more with neutral colors. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Researchers believe that this difference is the result of preemptive habitat destruction by private landowners responding to the risk of regulatory requirements, also known as shoot, shovel, and shut up (Wilcove et al., 1996). They state that, landowners are afraid that if they take actions that attract new endangered species to their land or increase the populations of the endangered species that are already there, their reward for doing so will be more regulatory restrictions on the use of their property (Wilcove et al., 1996). The probability that the Fish and Wildlife Service will detect a species significantly increases the level of habitat destruction by private landowners, indicating that a fear of regulation is the motivation for this behavior. One frequently referenced case involves Ben Cone, a disgruntled landowner from North Carolina who faced heavy land use restrictions resulting from the presence of 12 Red Cockaded Woodpecker colonies on his property. The Red Cockaded Woodpecker, or Leuconotopicus borealis, was very populous in the sandhills region of North Carolina for hundreds of years, inhabiting cavities in mature longleaf pine forests (Walters, 1991). Rap and Hip Hop music videos often portray lighter skinned women as the love interest of the main character or the woman the male finds sexually desirable (Wallace, Townsend, Glasgow, Ojie, 2011). Movies and television programs targeted towards African Americans may also have a light skinned woman as the successful, attractive character with a juxtaposing character who is darker, loud, obnoxious, and often fits into the sassy sidekick trope. A popular Black situational comedy in the 1990s, Martin, was a prime example of this (Walter et al., 1992). The main character s girlfriend Gina, was a successful, beautiful lighter skinned woman and her best friend, Pam, was dark skinned and often the recipient of Martin s jokes about her appearance. Exposure to these repeated stereotypes for Black women only furthers the notion that light skin is somehow superior to dark skin. However due to the popularity of these charter schools, to get in she ll have to participate in a lottery. If Daisy wins the lottery she will be able to get on a good path to achieve her dreams. The Effects Of Video Games On Our Culture Today ABSTRACT Video games have become a driving force in our culture today, and the effects, both positive and negative are scrutinized on a daily basis. The violent aspects of this form of media are a cause of concern, but to what effect remains an important question. This research proposal aims to look at a gap in the literature on this topic by qualitatively accessing aggression and enjoyment of players based on varying difficulty levels and numerous genre types available in the market today. The ultimate goal is to understand if the difficulty is an additional cause for potential aggressive behavior. I personally worked for gaming retailer GameStop for almost 8 years, and utilizing that knowledge base, I intend to be a part of the growing industry. If a subway accident occurs, safety boards, inspectors and investigators are called upon to investigate the incident. At some point, light rail, subway and commuter rail have all been investigated. Under the Compromise of 1850, California entered the Union as a free state, the Fugitive Slave Act was put into effect, the slave trade in Washington D.C. was abolished, the border dispute between New Mexico and Texas was settled, and the territories from the Mexican American War were left up to the people to decide whether they wanted to be a slave or free state. Fillmore supported the compromise wholeheartedly and hoped it would preserve the country and ultimately prevent a civil war. It did not prevent the civil war, yet the compromise prolonged the war for another ten years.
