and in certain populations to determine if individuals of particular ethnicity are more likely to present
with one phenotype of the other. It is understood that attached earlobes are the dominant phenotype
and detached earlobes are the recessive phenotype, however there is some controversy regarding this
distinction, as suggested by McDonald (2011), who points out that Carrière and Hilden were among
the first to study the genetics of earlobes, and they reached opposite conclusions . The purpose is this

Magical Realism In Paule Marshall s Praisesong For The Widow
Paule Marshall s novel Praisesong for the Widow, tells the story of a woman, Avey Johnson, and the
journeys she embarks on to find herself. Throughout the novel Paule uses magical realism as an
attempt to explicate attributes that are not able to be explained in Westernized language. Magical
realism can be defined as a method that depicts the world of people whose reality is different from the
reality that is objective. Praisesong for the Widow posses elements of magical realism; ways they are
portrayed in the text are through characters, setting and symbols.
In the process of magical realism one element is symbols, which can be words,objects, characters or
settings that represents something abstract. One artifact of magical realism present in the text is water
imagery. Throughout the text we see Avey travelling through different stages of submersion because
she is surrounded by water in the novel. According to Paule perspiration was beginning to sheet for

Functionalism remains, to this day, one of the most influential theories of the mind. While many facets
of functionalism has been tested throughout the century, one of the more interesting questions came in
the form of computers. Similarly to a human brain, could computers also think? This idea was
explored by John R. Searle, in his book titled, Minds, Brains, and Science. The author is a renowned
American philosopher, particularly in the philosophy of language and mind, and is currently teaching
at the University of California, in Berkeley ( John R. Searle, 2014). Searle earned his Ph.D. in
philosophy at Oxford, and has made several contributions to his field on topics, such as consciousness,
artificial intelligence, and the problem of free will ( John R. Searle, 2014). His Chinese Room
experiment is known as one of the main critiques to the concept of artificial intelligence. In Searle s
book, Searle describes his thought process into this experiment during the second chapter, titled Can

such as artificial intelligence could never exist, because our mental states exist in a biological manner.
