Syllable Division
A BRIEF STUDY ON SYLLABLE DIVISION: HELPING EFL LEARNERS
Abstract: This article will present some considerations on syllable division in order to help EFL
learners. Some theories will be presented so that it is possible to check the various studies on such
important topic. A scheme about separating the syllables will be shown and a topic on ambisyllabicity
as well.
Key Words: Syllable Division. Theories. Syllable Structure Introduction
The syllable is a basic unit of speech studied on both the phonetic and phonological levels of analysis.
For learners of English as a foreign language it is such a hard task to define and identify what a
syllable is, even because there are no universally agreed upon phonetic definitions of what it is. So ...

seen from the chart, there are two peaks of sonority in the phoneme string /p e #618; n t #618; #331;/,
namely the vowels /e #618; #618;/. This is to indicate that the number of syllables is two as well.
However, the sonority scale, like all the approaches outlined above, is of little help when it comes to
delimiting separate syllables.
Syllable structure
Hierarchical Structure of the Syllable
Most of modern phonological theories agree that the syllable has constituent or hierarchical rather
than linear structure. The syllable (conventionally marked as small Greek sigma: #963;) has two
immediate constituents (it branches into two elements, to put it in another way) – the Onset (O),
which includes any consonants that precede the nuclear element (the vowel), and the Rhyme (R),
which includes the nuclear element (the vowel) as well as any marginal elements (consonants) that
might follow it. The Rhyme, in turn, branches into Peak (P), also known as Nucleus (N), and Coda
(Co). The Peak (Nucleus), as the designation suggests, represents the nuclear or most sonorous

Sandburg And Heaney
Poetry of War War causes human beings to experience many different emotions. Civilian bystanders
and military members become uneasy, restless, and anxious. Also, like in every war, sacrifices are
made and lives are lost. Carl Sandburg and Seamus Heaney do a great job interpreting the feelings and
emotions felt during and between times of war in their two poems, Grass (Sandburg) and From the
Frontier of Writing (Heaney). Though both poems are on similar topics, the authors use different
literary techniques to get their point across to their audience. The poems may be very similar in the
literal meaning because both poems use war as the topic, but they have different figurative ideas that
are hidden behind the powerful text. Both Carl Sandburg ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The title From the Frontier of Writing comes from the frontier from one country to another. In a time
of war one can say that most writing and stories come from the frontier and beyond. Most people that
are not directly involved want to know what is happening and want to see writings and stories of those
directly experiencing the effects of war. All of the action is taking place at and beyond this frontier ,
thus it is the point Heaney chooses to discuss because it is the first point that those not affiliated with
and directly threatened by war. In From the Frontier of Writing , a person is speaking from experience
of the passing of an entry control point at the border of one country to another. In the statements
through out the poem, Towards your window (4) and suddenly you re through (19), he uses the second
point of view as a way to tell readers his personal experience and instruct one on how the passing of
that checkpoint might go. The speaker feels a sense of anxiety and nervousness while being stopped
due to the guns on tripods . When going through any military checkpoint or entry control point, it can
cause one to experience many different emotions and feelings of powerlessness, anxiety, violation, and
fear, even when that person may have nothing to

Mystery Will Absolve Me Play
I created my own play incorporating horror and mystery. The title is Mystery will absolve me . It was
inspired by Grand Guignol productions of horror. My play takes place in a hotel room in New York of
modern time. There is a family of four that checks into a particular room. The family of four is from
Kanas visiting New York and has nowhere else to go but to stay in the hotel room for their vacation.
The hotel room that the family checks is like a penthouse. But things start to get creepy as the days
keeps going on to the next day. Everything in the room starts to look old and starts to look like the
Victorian age period. The family starts to complain to the hotel manager. However, the hotel manager

Sacrifice And Success
Sacrifice Or Success?
Something that everyone wants to achieve is success. Success is not something that comes easy in life,
one must be prepared to give sacrifices such as time, in order for them to reach a professional level of
success. In order to succeed, people must learn to make sacrifices in life. Sacrifice is necessary for
people to succeed because if people are not willing to sacrifice anything such as time or effort, they
will not succeed. They need to sacrifice dedication, effort, and time. These three fundamental
principles if used correctly, are the best tools in the race for success. If the rules of using maximum
effort, dedication, and time are followed to its highest potential, individuals seeking success will find

The common, or magic , number is 10,000 hours of practice in order for one to become master or
professional at what they are trying to accomplish. Most professional athletes such as hockey players
have been playing the sport for just about as long as they could walk. For example, most of the skaters
on the 18u Syracuse Stars AAA hockey team started playing the game at ages 3,4, or 5. Every player
on that team is fundamentally sound when it comes to the game. They have been around it for so long
that hockey became a way of life, these are the players, that dedicate the most time in order to
succeed. They give the small amount of practice time that they have everyday, 100% every time they
touch the ice. The hockey players across the world that dedicate the most time to their sport, will be
the ones who end up having the best chance at becoming a professional. The same goes for any
profession in which one would like to excel in. The hockey coach for the Syracuse Stars 18u AAA
team always says You get out of it, what you put in it boys (Coach Dan Jones). This holds true because
if you put in the time to succeed it will show. A better example would be if there is a player on the
team that makes each practice but plays sloppy and does not attend optional practices and makes no
effort to put in extra time,

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk
INTRODUCTION
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was the first president of the republic of Turkey. He was known to be a
remarkable leader, reformer and a hero (Atillasoy, 2013). His great leadership display in the military
led to reformation and nation building (Byrne, 2003). The purpose of this report is to embrace a
balanced view on the life and work of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk including his strengths and weaknesses.
In so doing, I will be touching on Mustafa Kemal Ataturk life, weaknesses, leadership characteristics
and qualities against the characteristics. Also, I will be defining leadership and providing a theoretical
framework to help explain the analyses of his life. Finally, I will examine his inspiring messages to the
people.
ATATÜRK LIFE
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was born in 1881 in Salonika. At the age of 12, he was sent to military school
and then to the military academy in Istanbul. He made his military reputation repelling the Allied
invasion at the Dardanelles. After that, he began a nationalist revolution in Anatolia, organising
resistance to the peace settlement imposed on Turkey by the victorious Allies of which he was
victorious (BBC, 2014).

The Truman Show Thesis Statement
1. Introduction
The film, The Truman Show (1998) is about the man named Truman Burbank, a first child who is
legally adopted legally by the broadcasting company and been unknowingly publicizing his entire life
as an entertaining show to the whole world. Although he lives in the world where everything is
manipulated, at least for him, he is just like a normal man with own family, friends, and job. The
difference between others and Truman lies on the taboo that Truman has attained through the
traumatic event of losing his own father. His taboo is that he is incapable of living the city, Seahaven
as leaving the city signifies knowing the truth of his life. The film majorly depicts the moment when
Truman realized skepticism around his entire life and departs the journey to find the truth and real
identity
Throughout this journey to find the truth, lots of similarities between the life of Truman and
Siddhartha can be found. By depicting his life as a parallel version of Siddhartha s life, the idea of
spiritual journey and enlightenment is indirectly shown in the film. Furthermore, The Truman Show
can be analyzed as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

perfect determinism, the future is still uncertain and no one including Christof absolutely sure on how

Acute Renal Failure
Although the function of the urinary system is used to filter and eliminate waste from the body, it also
contributes with maintenance of homeostasis of water and blood pressure, regulates electrolytes, pH
balance, and activates vitamin D. The urinary system consists of 2 kidneys which extract wastes from
the blood, balance body fluid, and converts it into urine. It also includes 2 ureters which conduct urine
from the kidneys to the urinary bladder via peristalsis, a urinary bladder which serves as a reservoir
for urine and finally a urethra which conducts urine from the bladder to the outside of the body for
elimination. The ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra together form the urinary tract, which acts as a
plumbing system to drain urine from the kidneys, store it, and then release it during urination (Taylor,
1999).
As simple as this urinary system may sound there are also complication such as acute renal failure or
acute kidney failure, this occurs when the kidneys suddenly are unable to filter waste products from
the blood. When kidneys lose their filtering ability, dangerous levels of wastes may accumulate and
the blood s chemical makeup may get out of balance (mayo clinic, 1998). Acute renal failure is
categories into three different stages prerenal, intrarenal, and postrenal.
Prerenal is the most common type of acute renal

Comparing The Anarchist Squint And Social Imagination
A better world shall emerge based faith and understanding Douglas MacArthur. The world we live in
today can sometimes seem to be a unstable place. We have wars in the middle east, tensions between
nuclear superpowers and millions of people living in poverty. Many of us go day to day without
thinking about these things. What if we were able to take more time to analyze what is going on in the
world and what other people are going through? In this essay we will take a look at two concepts: The
Anarchist Squint and Social Imagination. We will see how these topics are similar and how they could
contribute to a better world of understanding. First let s talk about the Anarchist Squint. In James C.
Scott s book Three Cheers for Anarchism, he describes this concept as looking through the eyes of an
anarchist. To be able to do this one must be able to put aside his or her views on morality and forget
the way society expects us to be. According to Scott ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this class we have discussed the issues of suicide, racism, social isolation, anarchism as well as
many other issues. While there is no single idea of a perfect world, a world with more understanding
of eachother could be a better place. If each person on this planet was able have the potential to look at
life from each other s viewpoints there would be a lot less hate in society and people wouldn t be so
quick to jump to conclusions. Humanity can become narrow minded in their views and refuse to
consider anything else. looking back at our example for anarchist squint many people would say they
are not anarchist, but yet still many go five miles per hour over the posted speed limit. From a social
imagination standpoint, we may be racist and not even realize it. what one person defines as racist can
be different from someone s mindset. If only the world could come together and understand all walks

Cuban Missile Crisis By Bryce Faber
Cuban Missile Crisis
Bryce Faber The Cuban Missile crisis in October of 1962 was the closest the world has ever come to
nuclear war. Over thirteen October days, the U.S. and the Soviet Union faced off over Nuclear missile
sites found on Cuba 90 miles from the Florida shore. These two world superpowers locked horns in
what became known as the Cold War. The Cuban Missile crisis was the climactic showdown in which
John F. Kennedy and Nikita Krushchev Made decisions that would affect the fate of all mankind and
the wrong one could end the world as we know it. Before the rise of Cuban communism, the United
states had established close economic ties with Cuba since the early 1800 s when Spanish Controlled
Cuba was a leading supplier of sugar cane and a thriving center for trade. Due to the Spanish
American war, there was not much trade going through Cuba, which crushed its economy. After the
Spanish American war, The victorious America entered an amendment in which it gave itself the right
to intervene in Cuban affairs going forward. Many American businesses invested in Cuba, which
eventually made Cuba largely owned by American companies and largely controlled by the American
government. By the 1950 s, Cuba seemed to have the highest standard of living in Latin America and
became a hot destination for tourists. Many people in Cuba did not believe that American involvement
was a positive thing and that although it brought a high standard of

Hitchcock Duality Of Human Nature Analysis
Hitchcock also explores the duality of human nature through the parlour scene. We start with a mid
shot of Marion to show her initial reaction of the parlour, then to a close up of an owl with its wings
spread open looking at Marion like it would on its prey. We can see this is a duality of predator vs prey
resembling the good and the bad. We also notice around the room there is stuffed ravens and crows
and that they are usually symbolised with death, while Owls are symbolised with wisdom and
knowledge. The difference in these birds is a duality itself showing good vs bad. This is hinting at
Norman and what is about to happen between him and Marion, we then go back to a close up of

many famous or popular novels and films of out time, the individuals and the groups are considered as
the forefront of each story. No matter what types they are, the individuals and the groups is more or

When every character in this novel uses more pronouns referring to oneself, the individual character
will apply the first person plural we , rather than the singular I . Utilizing words in this way is easily
let me get confused at the beginning when I was reading. However, related to the opinions about the
relationship between the individuals and the groups getting themselves expressed in the book make
the subject of the theme clear to me eventually.
Anthem draws heavily on the historical record of twentieth century. The collectivist society described
in the book is called Equality 7 2521. This collectivist society is the place where is similar to the Nazi.
This society makes lots of restrictions that forbid people to have their individually thoughts.
Moreover, people are forbidden to think freely. All of them have to act in unquestioning obedience to
the orders of the society.
The author of Anthem addresses that collectivism refers to the subjugation of the individual to the
group . And it is not necessary to understand what the group is. It could be a certain class, a race or
country and so forth. In this context, each people are not considered as an autonomous individual with
his or her own life. Instead, they are treated as a component of the group whose sole purpose is to
obey and serve this group.

this was only my first year as camp director! This was the group of youth that made me realize that

They are truly amazing individuals. I have seen so much improvement in them that now I can also see

You Know When The Men Are Gone By Siobhan Fallon

a military spouse, is the author of You Know When the Men Are Gone a short story collection book.
In the short story You Survived the War Now Survive the Homecoming Fallon writes a gripping and
enticing story about Carla and her beloved husband, Ted, who returns from war as a changed man.
Carla is struggling with Ted because he is easily enraged and poses as a threat to Carla and their seven
month year old child. Throughout the story Ted and Carla must work together to bridge the change
that war brought upon them. In 2011 You Know When the Men Are Gone was published, during this
time, the war in Iraq was coming to end and soldiers were returning home from deployment. Fallon s
primary audience consisted of American civilians unaffiliated with a military family or lifestyle.
Therefore the audience may be aware of the life of a military spouse but not entirely informed on the
effects war has on a family. This audience shares similar values on family, for example how important
honesty and patience is within families. Although returning home is the most exuberant time for a
soldier longing for their family, Fallon s use of third person perspective in the short story You
Survived the War Now Survive the Homecoming exemplifies the reality of Carla, the wife, dealing
with the hardships of a returning soldier because adjusting back to normal civilian lifestyle seems
unfeasible.

Psychological Aspects Of Sexually Abused Women And The...
Introduction The topic of this article will focus on psychological aspects of sexually abused women
and the trauma recovery and empowerment. Sexual abuse can be well defined as sexual assaults and
sexual exploitation of the individual, which include the following: Rape, Incest, Molestation and
Voyeurism. An assortment of 15 empirical studies will compare and contrast their findings of
psychological sexual abuse and trauma recovery. Individuals that are victims of sexual abuse can
undergo many issues for the victim to inflict upon. Despite the fact that sexual abuse does mark males,
women are at a higher rate to be sexually abused. In fact, one out of three females is a victim of sexual
abuse (SA) or sexual violence (SV). 13% of women and 6% of men have reported they experienced
sexual cohesion in their lifetime (Sexual Violence, 2014). Sexual abuse not merely leaves a victim
with lengthily problems but also a lifetime of psychological difficulties when treatment is not sought
after. Research further suggests that certain characteristics of the abusive experience father daughter
incest, physical force and level of sexual activity tend to be associated with a more negative long term
outcome in women (Coffey, 1996). Sexual abuse may stint from early childhood that has continued to

control objective. An objective in formulating the audit approach is to limit the audit risk in the area
under scrutiny so the overall audit risk is at a sufficiently low level at the completion of the
examination. Another objective is to assess and control those risks to achieve the desired level of
assurance as efficiently as possible.
As much as this risks are prone to attacking the system; control risk assessment must be backed up by
control testing results.
Suitable Control Mechanisms
For more efficient and effective audit procedures, they are different control mechanisms that can be
applied in order to minimize risk: Mitigation is the most commonly used mechanism that involves
fixing the flaw or in a way providing a set of ways to compensate and control the impact that is
associated therein. The most common is installing system patches at any point a vulnerability has been
discovered. Under mitigation, ensuring compliance can be applied by ensuring compliance with
relevant bodies and rules, logical access can be tailor made so as to clearly target areas with the most
risk and those areas where change can be made and easily implemented. The use of monitoring
counters is the hardware assisted technique usually that adds the least amount of performance
overhead while minimizing the requirement to patch the kernel. It in turn offers a way to

Divine Nine Thesis
In the hollow halls of elite Cornell University, the germination of a transcending organization began.
Following suit around the county, in particular at Howard University, other transcending organizations
arose resulting in new ways of thinking, behavior and, connectivity for black American progression.
The fruit bore from these transcending organizations provided the core leadership and game changers
that shaped the twentieth century black experience. Such greats as W.E.B Du Bose, Booker T.

Asperger s Development And Social Behavior
Asperger s appeared first in the diagnostic manual of the American Psychiatric Association in 1994,
50 years after the symptoms of the disorder were described by Austrian doctor Hans Asperger. In
2013, Asperger s was replaced with the new term, Autism Spectrum Disorder (Delfos 2005). Many
people continue to use the older name. This replacement was the result of significant discussion within
the professional community as to whether Asperger s Syndrome constituted a distinct mental disorder
or whether it was a form of autism. Asperger s can be examined through many theoretical beliefs.
However, Vygotsky s sociocultural theory will be applied and used to analyze how a child with
Asperger s is affected through language development and social behavior.
Today Asperger s Syndrome is still widely known as an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Individuals
diagnosed with this disorder are generally considered to be on the high functioning end of the autism
spectrum. Children and adults diagnosed with this disorder generally have difficulty with social
interactions and exhibit a restricted range of interests and or repetitive behaviors (Delfos 2005). The
main difference between the two is thought to be in language development. Those individuals
diagnosed with Asperger s Syndrome typically will not have had delayed language development when
younger. Conversely, those with other forms of autism may evidence delays in language development
and greater difficulty in communication.

The City Of Southern Mexico Los Lobos Meaning The...
There once was a small village in Southern Mexico called Los Lobos meaning The Wolves. The
village was named that because the hills that the village were built on, it was inhabited with wild
wolves and the people had to be careful where they went. A family was going down there to visit their
relatives including Bryan and his nephew Miguel. They were very excited since it was their first time
visiting Mexico, but it all changed once they got closer to the small village which was filled with dirty
streets and homeless families begging for food. The sad scenery looked like something you would see

Is Batman A Better Superhero Than Superman
Batman is a better superhero than Superman, because he doesn t have natural super powers, he has to
rely on his intellect to outsmart and capture his foes.
Superman appears to be a great Superhero because he has super human strength, super speed, super
human reflexes, super senses, super durability and endurance. With all of Superman s super powers,
Batman can still save everyone s life at the end of the day, without the super powers that Superman
naturally has.
Thus Batman s alter ego Bruce Wayne s genius intellect enables him to outsmart Superman in multiple
ways. Batman s martial arts ability, makes Batman a better fighter than Superman, although Superman
has super powers, he can overpower Batman with his strength, but Batman can outsmart Superman
with his genius intellect, making him a better fighter. For example, Batman has trained his body to
near perfection, he has studied criminology, the sciences , escape artistry, martial arts and gymnastics.
On the other hand, Superman has every superpower that exists, which even includes a solar flare.
Superman is extremely intelligent and has access to the Kryptonian technology, which are powers
from the earth s yellow sun. If there is no sun Superman powers deplete; therefore, in my opinion
Superman is the most overpowered, overrated superhero that ever existed.
Superman is the most overrated superhero, he has every superpower that exist and he is still unable to

How Does Glyphosate Affect Date Palm Trees
Introduction
Asked to research how Round up PowerMax affects date palm trees, these are my findings. I found
that Round up s active ingredient is glyphosate. This led me to search various databases with scientific
studies on glyphosate s effects on date palm trees. Currently there is one similar study on glyphosates
effects on palm trees. Although this study at a glance seems thorough, it does not specifically test the
chemical s effects on date palm trees. Consequently, there are currently no studies on how glyphosate

The purpose of this memo is to discourse glyphosate s effects on date palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera).

The Pros and Cons of Human Cloning Essay
The cloning of humans is now very close to reality, thanks to the historic scientific breakthrough of
Dr. Ian Wilmut and his colleagues in the UK. This possibility is one of incredible potential benefit for
all of us. Unfortunately the initial debate on this issue has been dominated by misleading,
sensationalized accounts in the news media and negative emotional reactions derived from inaccurate
science fiction. Much of the negativity about human cloning is based simply on the breathtaking
novelty of the concept rather than on any real undesirable consequences. On balance, human cloning
would have overwhelming advantages if regulated in a reasonable way. A comprehensive ban on
human cloning by a misinformed public would be a sorry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cloning will be done only at the request and with the participation of ordinary people, as an additional
reproduction option. Many people have asked, Why would anyone want to clone a human being?
There are at least two good reasons: to allow families to conceive twins of exceptional individuals,
and to allow childless couples to reproduce. In a free society we must also ask, Are the negative
consequences sufficiently compelling that we must prohibit consenting adults from doing this? We
will see that in general they are not. Where specific abuses are anticipated, these can be avoided by
targeted laws and regulations, which I will suggest below.
Alleged Objections to Human Cloning
Some politicians in the United States are now proposing to save us from the horrors of human cloning
by a comprehensive prohibition. The interesting thing is that under close analysis there really aren t
any serious problems. In the few cases where abuses are likely to occur, these can be avoided by
targeted legislation. There is nothing about human cloning per se that justifies its criminalization. The
only objection that stands up under analysis is that the technology has not been perfected. This is a
justification for further research, not for a prohibition. The only objection that stands up under analysis
is that the technology has not been perfected. This is a justification for

Under the Bush Administration, beginning with the election of President Bush in 2000 and running
until early 2009, Guantanamo Bay was filled with suspected 9/11 terrorists from the Taliban and al

Administration toward near guarantees of containing those responsible for the War, which can be
summed up in a human rights article by Martin Flaherty, [...] the Bush Administration adopted what it
asserted were three necessary and appropriate means that would serve as principal ways to pursue the

By including this vision of closing Guantanamo as a part of his presidential campaign, Obama gained
great support from the public. Once elected, Obama acted on his promise to close Guantanamo on his
second day as President, shown by Scott Horton in his article on Guantanamo, He (Obama) created an
inter agency task force to advise him on the specifics of this process and to create future guidelines for
the detention of terrorism suspects captured abroad, (1). The overall shift in opinion on Guantanamo
in both citizens and high up leaders of the country, however, was a result of many factors occurring
around the time of Obama s election. First, while Guantanamo processes and descriptions were long
held from the public under war time confidentiality, more information leaked out as the war settled
down, including a basic description of Camp X ray, which was, consisting of small cages with chain
link sides, concrete floors and metal roofs, offering scant shelter from the elements, and with very
basic sanitary facilities, (Living Conditions). Methods of torture also became more nationally known,
reinforcing the shifting opinion against Guantanamo. Finally, one of the largest reasons for Obama s
push to close Guantanamo was due to the lack of empirical evidence proving detainees guilty (Horton

Rap Hop And The Hip Hop Essay

mumble rap genre. Let s say, for the most part, the hip hop community has a problem with mumble
rap. For the most part, it makes sense. Humans are prone to resist change, especially as overt as
mumble rap has been as a definitive genre for the past few years. Many in the public sphere, like
Youtube Personality B Doe, have smeared it s name and aesthetic with very little counter argument
arisen or given the proper attention or discussion, especially if the defense is coming from the artists
themselves or fans of that artist. It becomes a worrisome look for some long term hip hop enthusiasts
because scholars have not brought up a defense for mumble rap. Where are the scholars defending
mumble rap? Why are they yet to defend mumble rap? Simply put, they already have. Long before the
formation of mumble rap, the hip hop genre s style, technical analysis, lifestyle, and other aspects
associated with hip hop, have included mumble rap in conjunction with other forms of hip hop.
Scholars as well as pioneers of rap and hip hop have left open the birth of other forms of hip hop.

The Theme Of Individualism By Ralph Waldo Emerson
The theme of individualism is present in several of Ralph Waldo Emerson s works. It was also his
philosophical views on how to live life. He believed that human beings had remarkable capabilities,
more than they can possibly identify. With these capabilities a person should govern themselves, not
be governed by a society. Emerson also believed that nature played a large role in how man should act
and to follow nature s actions of growing without obstruction ( Nature ). This is why he lead the
Transcendentalism movement in the nineteenth century, along with Theodore Parker, Frederic Henry
Hedge, Amos Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller and Henry David Thoreau (Lewis). This philosophy
was not only significant then, it was imperative throughout times in history.
Emerson speaks of Americas ability to deviate from the norms set in Europe in one of his formal
speeches given in 1837 on August 31st in Cambridge. It was simply titled The American Scholar
(originally titled: An Oration Delivered before the Phi Beta Kappa Society, at Cambridge,
[Massachusetts,] August 31, 1837). He begins with speaking of how this gathering is distinctive and is
nothing like the ones of the past in Europe. He believes it is time to begin anew as a new country of
people. He believed that the society they were living in were only allowing them to imitate with the
majority and not allow them to be Man Thinking . (Emerson, The American Scholar ). The only way
to reflect on such a high level is to throw

Cycle Of Sleep Research Paper
Sleep, according to the Merriam Webster dictionary, is described as, the natural periodic suspension of
consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored. While this is very true, there is so
much more that goes into what people deem as sleep . There are many types of sleep , as strange as it
sounds. In fact, there isn t just one stage of sleep, but rather four distinct stages that occur multiple
times each time someone closes their eyes for the night. And it s only one of them that dreams are
broadcasted and (sometimes) stored in our minds to wake up to in the morning. Not only are there
multiple stages that create one sleep cycle, but there are multiple cycles that happen each night. The
average person over the age of 10 sleeps through 4 6 cycles a night, as each cycle is completed in
roughly 90 110 minutes. Stage 1 Stage one is, naturally, the first stage in the sleep cycle. This stage
and stage 3 make up up to 30% of the first cycle. The longer a person sleeps, the more cycles of stages

of the sleep cycle. This is what doctors consider to be the deep sleep stage. Here, all eye and muscle

the longest stage, it is where people receive most of their rest of the night. Also during this stage does
the brain activity slow, again creating the ability to have deep, tranquilized sleep. It is recommended to
not disturb the sleeping person, as it creates a disoriented person and is difficult to continue the cycle
once awoken. Sleeping tests have resulted in doctors noticing a possible infrequent burst of brain
activity occurring during this stage, although, as stated before, it is very infrequent and is nothing to
be concerned with. No dreaming happens during this

Jan Beatty begins to leave little hints in the poem that show signs of hope that this poem isn t just
about a depressed father complaining. These signs aren t easily found, because they are rather inferred
by the author. These signs show that this father actually loves his son very much and is saying this
speech as if to motivate his son to work towards his dreams and put in the effort to excel in the job
market. Once this idea is in mind, the title of the poem begins to make sense by how his father is
teaching him to dream, just in a different way that is unique and that not a lot of people are familiar

Muscular Dystrophy Case Study
Duchenne s Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is caused by recessive mutations in the dystrophin gene on
the X chromosome affecting 1 in every 3,500 5,000 male births. As shown in Fig. 1, dystrophin
protein anchors the actin cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix, playing critical roles in stabilizing
and protecting the muscle fibers against strain related injuries. As outlined in Fig. 2, dystrophin
mutations lead to myocyte fragility and membrane damages with repeated contractions, resulting in
increased cell permeability. Consequently, calcium ions diffuse into the myocytes, activating calcium

Treatments are aimed to control symptoms, preserve muscle functions and improve quality of life.
Prednisone is a type of commonly prescribed corticosteroid known for its anti inflammatory and
immunosuppressive properties through direct gene expression regulations. The precise mechanism by
which prednisone increases muscle strength in DMD patients is unknown, but hypothesises have been
made based on its modulatory effects in the myocyte inflammation, degeneration and regeneration
pathways following damage. As illustrated in Fig. 3, under healthy physiology condition, myocyte
damage stimulates signaling pathways that promotes both degeneration and regeneration of the
damaged tissue to promote healing. The extend of muscle healing is dependent on the balance between
the two processes. As outlined in Fig. 4, initial myocyte damage activates inflammatory cells such as
neutrophils and macrophages to inflict further necrosis through the release of free radicals and
proteases. The damaged myocytes are then removed via phagocytosis to provide space for healthy
tissue regeneration. The regeneration process is initiated through the activation of myocyte precursor
cells called satellite cells to differentiate and fuse at the site of damage. However the proliferating
abilities of satellite cells are reduced in DMD patients due to the absence of dystrophin proteins,
resulting in impaired muscle regeneration capacities. As a result, inflammation

Political Islam And The Islamic Islam
Political Islam is a term that was coined inside the scholarly realm to allude to the more extensive
group of political frameworks that are Islam oriented. The greater part of the states that draw on the
Islamic instructions to influence political and social elements of the general public are said to be
practicing political Islam. The vast majority of the practices will look for direction from the Islamic

and how it identifies with whatever is left of the world. While the term may not be as old, political

Ancient Roman And The Roman Empire
The Ancient Roman s had a wicked idea of entertainment. The Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as
the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an elliptical amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of
concrete and stone, it is the largest amphitheater ever built and is considered one of the greatest works
of architecture and engineering. The Roman Colosseum, constructed in 79 AD, is a visual
representation of the importance of physical strength and military proficiency in Ancient Roman
civilization, this is because it was constructed to revel Rome s military accomplishments and to
provide entertainment for Roman citizens. Many events prompted the construction of the Roman
Colosseum.

Vespasian sat on the Roman throne from AD70 79. (Sims et al., 1999) proposes that Vespasian was the
emperor who restored order after Nero. Many emperors of Ancient Rome satisfied the needs of their
citizens with the giving of bread and entertainment, Vespasian wanted to impress visitors and the
general public. Being able to build a vast structure showed that the government took care of its people
and was wealthy. It essentially also showed the emperor s power. Emperor Vespasian used the
construction of the Colosseum to gain popularity and support throughout his empire. His name was
not to be forgotten, as well as Titus who was the successor and heir of Vespasian. Jewish slaves
assisted in the construction of the Colosseum in a form of slave labour.
Jewish slaves were the forced builders of the Colosseum and it was accomplished with slave labor.
Due to failure in the Great Revolt, 20,000 Jewish slaves were brought over to Rome to build the
Colosseum. (Mathias, 2011) proposed that another 70,000 Jewish slaves were used to quarry stones
for the Colosseum, haling over 292,000 cartloads of stone from the Tivoli which was 17 miles away
from the construction site. The construction project was funded by the treasure stolen from the
Temple, as the empire was broke at the time due to the Great Revolt. The construction project took 8
long years to build. Unfortunately, Vespasian was unable to

Mathematics and its Relation with Music and its Harmonics
Ever since c. 17th century, musical compositions have manipulated the standard aspects of music,
which include rhythm and melody. More importantly, many musical compositions have incorporated
complex math within, for examples again, melodies and rhythms that create a uniqueness that has yet
to be perfectly matched by other composers. One other key aspect of music in general, harmony, is
where a fairly complex mathematical formula is involved: the harmonic mean. Because harmony is a
major component of music, it is no surprise that this harmonic mean can be applied to nearly all types
of music. Basically, a harmonic mean as it applies to music ~is any possible division between an
original note and the octave of that note that produces a different note. With that, there is a sequence in
the divisions between a note and its octave that is not very consistent in distance from the original
note. One instrument in particular that can demonstrate this type of mean is the vioiin because of the
harmonic tones produced whenever a finger is pressed on a string. At certain points on a string.
different notes are produced by the harmonics of the upper and iower naives of the string, which
would be examples of harmonic means.
The diagram above is of a D string on a violin from the beginning of the neck where the string first
crosses the neck to where the string touches the bridge. The halfway notation marks the most
prominent harmonic mean on a violin: the octave. Its harmonic mean is 1/2

There will be times were the kids were getting restless or acted uninterested in the class and Mrs.
Manner will call them by their names and tell them to pay attention, if the behavior was repeated she
will say something along the lines of ; Mr., this is the second time, I had to call your attention, and that
usually made them stop and listen. When communicating nonverbally, she will open her eyes wide to
show appreciation for answering in a correct manner or will narrow her eyes to tell children to control
themselves.
Afterwards, the children who stayed in the rug will trace the letter assigned and make a picture about
it with Mrs. Manner. Yet the children in the round table with me, will be read a story and I was
suppose to ask them questions about the story and sometimes we had to sing songs accordingly.
Subsequently, my group will later switch to the floor and I will repeat the same lesson to the kids who
were earlier in the rug. Sometimes the whole group will be overly excited and Mrs. Manner will say
Macaroni and Cheese to which the whole group will answer; Everybody Freeze. This usually
refocused the student s attention to the class. Some children will always participate and give accurate
answers, while other students try persistently to disrupt the class.
Moreover, some kids will raise their hands and then give you a personal account of their vacation or
something completely unrelated to the class. Mrs. Manner taught me how to refocus the attention by

Sayyid Qutb s Impact on Islam
2. Evaluate the impact on Islam of ONE significant person or school of thought.
Sayyid Qutb had a seemingly minimal impact throughout his life, but his teachings and ideology have
become of significant importance to the Islamic faith. However his views and thoughts of that are
somewhat extreme have lead some followers to form organizations which are involved with radical,
extreme and terrorist activities.
Qutb s teachings and commentary of Islamic teachings are seen to hold considerable authority and
significance to adherents of Islam. His main and most revered teachings included: the belief in Tawhid
(the oneness of God), the concept of Jahiliyya (pagan ignorance), jihad (struggle) and the need to
revive Islam.
Through his first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus it is evident, that Qutb s teachings in the ideal of jahiliyya were fundamental to the pathway that
Islam decided to follow, and did in fact promote the teachings of Islam and sustained growth.
Qutb was one of the most significant figures in the development of jihadi Salafi ideology. Qutb in true
Salafi style, reanalysed the Qur an to find new ideology. Qutb acknowledge that the contemporary
jama at (movement) would also encounter periods of weakness. Therefore he insisted that here was an
immediate need for a new movement. Qutb also constantly stated that there was a need for new
leadership. He claimed that the new leaders should engage in jihad (struggle) against jahiliyya, so that
a true Islamic state can be established. His teachings of jihad and the need to use force if the survival
of the Islam was under threat, is being used today out of his context of time by extreme terrorist
groups. Members of these radical groups say are not afraid to die for their cause because Qutb gave
them reason: For a pious life is a life of struggle or jihad for Islam, and struggle means martyrdom .
Qutb s actions, books and somewhat extreme teachings all greatly contributed to the revival of Islam.
He successfully contributed to the revival of the Islamic faith through his commentary and teachings
on the Qur an and the tradition. In this action, adherents were able to gain a greater understanding of

The Real World-Personal Narrative
The Real World
Gunnar Thompson, 650 word, Growing Up One of the biggest turning points in my life was when I
got my first job. I wasn t even old enough to drive yet when I was first hired at the Middletown
Sportsmen s Club. I remember the anxiety and excitement that came along with it. I was so scared that
I would mess something up when I first started and I remember my dad saying to me don t worry
about because everyone makes mistakes especially when they are doing something that is new to
them. This was one of my first responsibility that takes place in the adult world. I developed many
new skills that I would ve never known it wasn t for this job. I learned to handle myself in a polite
manner in front of adults and I also learned about work equipment such as how to run a tractor and a
bobcat. Getting this job was very life changing for me. I found that after working for several months I
was starting to get more mature and responsible. One of the most important thing I learned at this job
was social skills. I ve always thought that school wasn t enough to teach me social skills because I was
always around people of my own age. Here I was always around adults and in turn this taught me how
to handle myself in front of adults and strangers. For my whole life I was shy and wasn t able to carry
a flowing conversation with anyone without it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This job made me grow up, I couldn t work there and still act like a kid. This job was where I finally
reached maturity. I learned a lot about social skills that will serve me in my college career and for the
rest of my life. I learned about equipment that may help me in future jobs and for just basic
responsibilities. I was also introduced into my favorite hobby. A hobby that will help me pay for
college and maybe that will turn into a professional career. Honestly, I don t know how my life would

Some theories will be presented so that it is possible to check the various studies on such important topic. A scheme about separating the syllables will be shown and a topic on ambisyllabicity as well. Key Words: Syllable Division. Theories. Syllable Structure Introduction The syllable is a basic unit of speech studied on both the phonetic and phonological levels of analysis. This is to indicate that the number of syllables is two as well. However, the sonority scale, like all the approaches outlined above, is of little help when it comes to delimiting separate syllables. Syllable structure Hierarchical Structure of the Syllable Most of modern phonological theories agree that the syllable has constituent or hierarchical rather than linear structure. The syllable (conventionally marked as small Greek sigma: #963;) has two immediate constituents (it branches into two elements, to put it in another way) – the Onset (O), which includes any consonants that precede the nuclear element (the vowel), and the Rhyme (R), which includes the nuclear element (the vowel) as well as any marginal elements (consonants) that might follow it. The Rhyme, in turn, branches into Peak (P), also known as Nucleus (N), and Coda (Co). The Peak (Nucleus), as the designation suggests, represents the nuclear or most sonorous ... Also, like in every war, sacrifices are made and lives are lost. Carl Sandburg and Seamus Heaney do a great job interpreting the feelings and emotions felt during and between times of war in their two poems, Grass (Sandburg) and From the Frontier of Writing (Heaney). Though both poems are on similar topics, the authors use different literary techniques to get their point across to their audience. The poems may be very similar in the literal meaning because both poems use war as the topic, but they have different figurative ideas that are hidden behind the powerful text. Both Carl Sandburg ... Most people that are not directly involved want to know what is happening and want to see writings and stories of those directly experiencing the effects of war. All of the action is taking place at and beyond this frontier , thus it is the point Heaney chooses to discuss because it is the first point that those not affiliated with and directly threatened by war. In the statements through out the poem, Towards your window (4) and suddenly you re through (19), he uses the second point of view as a way to tell readers his personal experience and instruct one on how the passing of that checkpoint might go. • 7. The Truman Show Thesis Statement 1. Introduction The film, The Truman Show (1998) is about the man named Truman Burbank, a first child who is legally adopted legally by the broadcasting company and been unknowingly publicizing his entire life as an entertaining show to the whole world. Although he lives in the world where everything is manipulated, at least for him, he is just like a normal man with own family, friends, and job. The difference between others and Truman lies on the taboo that Truman has attained through the traumatic event of losing his own father. His taboo is that he is incapable of living the city, Seahaven as leaving the city signifies knowing the truth of his life. The film majorly depicts the moment when Truman realized skepticism around his entire life and departs the journey to find the truth and real identity Throughout this journey to find the truth, lots of similarities between the life of Truman and Siddhartha can be found. By depicting his life as a parallel version of Siddhartha s life, the idea of spiritual journey and enlightenment is indirectly shown in the film. • 8. Acute Renal Failure Of The Urinary System Diana Galeana MED 2049 Acute Renal Failure Instructor Michelle Earxsion Lamothe 7/25/2014 Acute Renal Failure Although the function of the urinary system is used to filter and eliminate waste from the body, it also contributes with maintenance of homeostasis of water and blood pressure, regulates electrolytes, pH balance, and activates vitamin D. The urinary system consists of 2 kidneys which extract wastes from the blood, balance body fluid, and converts it into urine. It also includes 2 ureters which conduct urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder via peristalsis, a urinary bladder which serves as a reservoir for urine and finally a urethra which conducts urine from the bladder to the outside of the body for elimination. The ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra together form the urinary tract, which acts as a plumbing system to drain urine from the kidneys, store it, and then release it during urination (Taylor, 1999). As simple as this urinary system may sound there are also complication such as acute renal failure or acute kidney failure, this occurs when the kidneys suddenly are unable to filter waste products from the blood. When kidneys lose their filtering ability, dangerous levels of wastes may accumulate and the blood s chemical makeup may get out of balance (mayo clinic, 1998). Due to the Spanish American war, there was not much trade going through Cuba, which crushed its economy. This possibility is one of incredible potential benefit for all of us. Unfortunately the initial debate on this issue has been dominated by misleading, sensationalized accounts in the news media and negative emotional reactions derived from inaccurate science fiction. Much of the negativity about human cloning is based simply on the breathtaking novelty of the concept rather than on any real undesirable consequences. Many people have asked, Why would anyone want to clone a human being? There are at least two good reasons: to allow families to conceive twins of exceptional individuals, and to allow childless couples to reproduce. In a free society we must also ask, Are the negative consequences sufficiently compelling that we must prohibit consenting adults from doing this? We will see that in general they are not. Where specific abuses are anticipated, these can be avoided by targeted laws and regulations, which I will suggest below. Alleged Objections to Human Cloning Some politicians in the United States are now proposing to save us from the horrors of human cloning by a comprehensive prohibition. The interesting thing is that under close analysis there really aren t any serious problems. In the few cases where abuses are likely to occur, these can be avoided by targeted legislation. There is nothing about human cloning per se that justifies its criminalization. The only objection that stands up under analysis is that the technology has not been perfected. Large steps were taken by the Bush Administration toward near guarantees of containing those responsible for the War, which can be summed up in a human rights article by Martin Flaherty, [...] the Bush Administration adopted what it asserted were three necessary and appropriate means that would serve as principal ways to pursue the Global War on Terror, (36). Once elected, Obama acted on his promise to close Guantanamo on his second day as President, shown by Scott Horton in his article on Guantanamo, He (Obama) created an inter agency task force to advise him on the specifics of this process and to create future guidelines for the detention of terrorism suspects captured abroad, (1). The overall shift in opinion on Guantanamo in both citizens and high up leaders of the country, however, was a result of many factors occurring around the time of Obama s election. First, while Guantanamo processes and descriptions were long held from the public under war time confidentiality, more information leaked out as the war settled down, including a basic description of Camp X ray, which was, consisting of small cages with chain link sides, concrete floors and metal roofs, offering scant shelter from the elements, and with very basic sanitary facilities, (Living Conditions). Methods of torture also became more nationally known, reinforcing the shifting opinion against Guantanamo. Let s say, for the most part, the hip hop community has a problem with mumble rap. For the most part, it makes sense. Humans are prone to resist change, especially as overt as mumble rap has been as a definitive genre for the past few years. Many in the public sphere, like Youtube Personality B Doe, have smeared it s name and aesthetic with very little counter argument arisen or given the proper attention or discussion, especially if the defense is coming from the artists themselves or fans of that artist. Why are they yet to defend mumble rap? Simply put, they already have. • 31. The Theme Of Individualism By Ralph Waldo Emerson The theme of individualism is present in several of Ralph Waldo Emerson s works. It was also his philosophical views on how to live life. He believed that human beings had remarkable capabilities, more than they can possibly identify. With these capabilities a person should govern themselves, not be governed by a society. Emerson also believed that nature played a large role in how man should act and to follow nature s actions of growing without obstruction ( Nature ). This is why he lead the Transcendentalism movement in the nineteenth century, along with Theodore Parker, Frederic Henry Hedge, Amos Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller and Henry David Thoreau (Lewis). This philosophy was not only significant then, it was imperative throughout times in history. Emerson speaks of Americas ability to deviate from the norms set in Europe in one of his formal speeches given in 1837 on August 31st in Cambridge. It was simply titled The American Scholar (originally titled: An Oration Delivered before the Phi Beta Kappa Society, at Cambridge, [Massachusetts,] August 31, 1837). He begins with speaking of how this gathering is distinctive and is nothing like the ones of the past in Europe. He believes it is time to begin anew as a new country of people. • 32. Cycle Of Sleep Research Paper Sleep, according to the Merriam Webster dictionary, is described as, the natural periodic suspension of consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored. While this is very true, there is so much more that goes into what people deem as sleep . There are many types of sleep , as strange as it sounds. In fact, there isn t just one stage of sleep, but rather four distinct stages that occur multiple times each time someone closes their eyes for the night. And it s only one of them that dreams are broadcasted and (sometimes) stored in our minds to wake up to in the morning. Not only are there multiple stages that create one sleep cycle, but there are multiple cycles that happen each night. The average person over the age of 10 sleeps through 4 6 cycles a night, as each cycle is completed in roughly 90 110 minutes. Stage 1 Stage one is, naturally, the first stage in the sleep cycle. While this is the longest stage, it is where people receive most of their rest of the night. Also during this stage does the brain activity slow, again creating the ability to have deep, tranquilized sleep. It is recommended to not disturb the sleeping person, as it creates a disoriented person and is difficult to continue the cycle once awoken. Once this idea is in mind, the title of the poem begins to make sense by how his father is teaching him to dream, just in a different way that is unique and that not a lot of people are familiar with. As shown in Fig. 1, dystrophin protein anchors the actin cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix, playing critical roles in stabilizing and protecting the muscle fibers against strain related injuries. As outlined in Fig. 2, dystrophin mutations lead to myocyte fragility and membrane damages with repeated contractions, resulting in increased cell permeability. Consequently, calcium ions diffuse into the myocytes, activating calcium dependent proteases to cause further cell necrosis. , Additionally, creatine kinase (CK), a myocyte enzyme that stores energy for contraction, leaks out ... Prednisone is a type of commonly prescribed corticosteroid known for its anti inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties through direct gene expression regulations. The precise mechanism by which prednisone increases muscle strength in DMD patients is unknown, but hypothesises have been made based on its modulatory effects in the myocyte inflammation, degeneration and regeneration pathways following damage. As illustrated in Fig. 3, under healthy physiology condition, myocyte damage stimulates signaling pathways that promotes both degeneration and regeneration of the damaged tissue to promote healing. The extend of muscle healing is dependent on the balance between the two processes. As outlined in Fig. 4, initial myocyte damage activates inflammatory cells such as neutrophils and macrophages to inflict further necrosis through the release of free radicals and proteases. The damaged myocytes are then removed via phagocytosis to provide space for healthy tissue regeneration. The regeneration process is initiated through the activation of myocyte precursor cells called satellite cells to differentiate and fuse at the site of damage. However the proliferating abilities of satellite cells are reduced in DMD patients due to the absence of dystrophin proteins, resulting in impaired muscle regeneration capacities. • 42. Mathematics and its Relation with Music and its Harmonics Ever since c. 17th century, musical compositions have manipulated the standard aspects of music, which include rhythm and melody. More importantly, many musical compositions have incorporated complex math within, for examples again, melodies and rhythms that create a uniqueness that has yet to be perfectly matched by other composers. One other key aspect of music in general, harmony, is where a fairly complex mathematical formula is involved: the harmonic mean. Because harmony is a major component of music, it is no surprise that this harmonic mean can be applied to nearly all types of music. Basically, a harmonic mean as it applies to music ~is any possible division between an original note and the octave of that note that produces a different note. With that, there is a sequence in the divisions between a note and its octave that is not very consistent in distance from the original note. One instrument in particular that can demonstrate this type of mean is the vioiin because of the harmonic tones produced whenever a finger is pressed on a string. At certain points on a string. different notes are produced by the harmonics of the upper and iower naives of the string, which would be examples of harmonic means.
