Harry Potter Hero Journey
Joseph Campbell once said, A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger
than oneself . According to his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, a hero could be anyone. In
his book, he introduces ideas that suggest that all stories follow a pattern. He tells us that the hero
of the story goes through a 12 step process. They are introduced in their world, presented with tasks
and training, face death, and ultimately retrieves some type of treasure. This is true for most
stories, Including Harry Potter during the movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Throughout
the movie, Harry successfully goes through all of the stages.
Stage 1: The Ordinary World
The hero is shown in their home world. He or she is seen as ordinary

Duke s Character In Rigoletto Essay
A huge shift has taken place from Act I to Act II as we see the tone develop through following
the development of the Duke s character in Rigoletto. However, the contradictions and
differences revealed between these arias do not negate the similarities in each aria. Each aria
serves a purpose and has revealed unforeseen depths of feeling. These Acts work together to
convey the Duke as a complex character. Even with the Duke s drastic change in character in Act
II, we still see resemblance of the Duke as the same person from Act I throughout Rigoletto.
Compare Act I, where the Duke declares that this woman or that is the same as the many others
[he] see around [him] (I.1) with Act II where the Duke exclaims, She was stolen from me (II, 89)....

She is a brief physical attraction but then she is useless. In Act II, the passage reveals the Duke s
manner as more caring and protective. He sees Gilda as a prized object to keep and possess. The
fact that she was stolen from him indicates a tone of possessiveness. While the Duke seems to
understand Gilda better by seeing her individual characteristics, in both situations he still
objectifies women. These arias also relate because in both, the Duke is not aware of his lies and
contradictions. In the first arias, the Duke very confidently expresses how he feels about
women, declaring, If today this woman pleases me, perhaps tomorrow it will be another.
Fidelity...we detest like a cruel disease (I.1). The Duke s language is direct and confident
without any doubt giving off a composed and collected spirit. He believes in what he says
because his actions after his speech coincide with his words as he moves from woman to woman.
In the Act II, the Duke enters in the back when he begins his soliloquy saying, She, so pure, by
whose innocent gaze [he] believe[s] [him]self almost impelled toward

Channel Island Research Paper
I jumped out of bed on today, June 19, eagerly waiting when I would finally arrive at the Channel
Islands National Park. I have been researching this park for some time, and I couldn t believe that
I was going to spend a few days on these wonderful islands. I got together my tent and my
supplies, and I sooner or later headed out the door.
The boat arrived bright and early, and I spent this time going over research. I read that this park
became a National Park on March 5, 1980. It became a national park due to it attracting many
explorers, scientists, and historians. It is also established because of its natural beauty. To conclude,
I read that there are nine islands, but only five became part of the National Park. When the boat

This is the campsite on Santa Barbara Island. A deer mouse scurried out of my tent as I was
getting ready for bed. This endangered species interested me greatly. As I arose that morning, I
enjoyed the sound of waves. I decided to go to Santa Rosa for my last day in the Channel Islands
National Park. I took an early boat to this island. I was mournful that I couldn t go to all five
islands, but I knew that I can t extend my trip.
When I got off of the boat, I headed to a historic site that I had read about. This place was called
Vail and Vickers Island Ranch. It is about 100 years old and it used to hold 3,000 to 7,000 cattle at
a time! For the rest of the day, I just kind of wandered around the green filled trails.
When I arrived on the boat home, I was very unhappy to be leaving this national park. I had such
a good time! I realized then why these beautiful islands are a national treasure. I got a chance to
walk where early Europeans did. Also, all five islands have unique landmarks and animals that no
other place has. Lastly, the views are breathtaking. I felt so pleased that I got to visit this national
park, and I hope that I can come back

Positive Youth Development Programs
A positive youth development program is designed to help young adults overcome their challenges
and live up to their full potential. Youth development is emphasized through different activities
which helps the youth emotionally, physically, and socially. Youth development programs are
basically used to help them regain confidence, and how to bounce back to a normal life. My
program name is Helping Hands, which will be based on abused youthin African American public
schools. The motto for my program is Not all hands are helpful, but our hands are guaranteed
life changers. When organizing a program knowing the population, how it works, and its
essentials are mandatory for a successful youth development program. The name of my youth
development program is called Helping Hands. This program will focus on abused youth in
African American public schools, grades 9th 12th. This program will focus on these grades
because a lot of the youth feel like they can deal with things like this on their own. If needed, we
also help any other youth who aren t it in grades 9 12. The phrase No child is left behind not only

Essay about Compare and Contrast Religion in Two Works
Religion is sold to the masses daily. In 1925 it was sold to the masses in the form of printed
material by Bruce Barton. In 1960 it was sold to the masses by way of a film entitled Elmer
Gantry. Bruce Barton sold a different idea of Jesus than most people were familiar with. In the
film, Elmer Gantry sold religionwith bravado and arrogance which was not the typical way of
selling religion either. In each work, religion is being sold but Elmer is a more exciting and
relatable character than Bruce Barton s Jesus. Elmer Gantry sold religion in a similar way to
Barton s Jesus but did so in a more relatable manner. In both works, each character sought out to

Although, Jesus saved people because it was a duty imposed upon him by his father. Elmer
Gantry however, had a different reason for preaching the word of the lord. Elmer found it
convenient to preach about the lord when he knew he could get something in return. He had no
ulterior motive than to use the words in the Bible to his advantage to gain something for him. In
the film, Elmer sees a good thing in Sister Sharon Falconer s evangelical troupe and cons his way
into her tent tabernacle, her graces, and her heart (Weiler, 1960). Elmer used the Bible to get
closer to and ultimately to win over Sister Sharon. Elmer Gantry was an opportunistic character.
He used religion when it could benefit him. Not only was Gantry opportunistic about religion,
but was opportunistic when it came to sex and alcohol as well (Bluestone, 1961). Many people
can relate to a character such as Elmer Gantry. When the opportunity arises for something to go
in his favor, he grabs the opportunity. Many people may feel the same way today. If an
opportunity arises to get something for yourself, you will. Elmer is an ordinary person with
ordinary impulses. He sees Sister Sharon as something he desires and works his way into her
inner circle to be closer to her. An ordinary man would do something similar to be closer to a
woman he finds attractive. Both characters had very different reasons for selling religion, but both
were extremely successful.

Shiloh, By Bobbie Ann Mason
Shiloh , by Bobbie Ann Mason, explores an interesting theme, the distinct parallel between the
surface level of what the events of the story are, and the meaning underneath. This parallel is
seen throughout the story, from the start when Leroy Moffitt is building craft kits for at first just
to pass time, while Norma Jean is lifting weights and working at a Rexall drugstore for the same
reason; To later on when Norma says she doesn t know what she s talking about and Leroy thinks
that the way to saving his marriage is to come up with a last minute idea. The story engages the
theme of the parallellevels through the unstable marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean. The theme of
this parallel is shown overtly through the images, descriptions, and characterizations of the log
cabins in the story, and of Shiloh. Interestingly, the characters and the world they live in are stuck
on the surface, shown through how both Leroy and Norma Jean drift on subjects, and through the
names in the story.
Norma Jean and Leroy s marriage shows an insight on the theme in action because of how their
lack of understanding the inner workings of marriage, which causes them to drift apart and
eventually separate. One of the most important things in marriage is the ability to communicate,
but neither of them are able to do so on a meaningful level. An example of this is when Norma
Jean starts to explain why she wants to leave him, then as she walks away she takes back what she
said, adding No, it

GST India: Effects on Indian Economy
Abstract
The introduction of GST is a single move enveloping all indirect taxes that will make country
single unified common market. It is a destination based multipoint tax system covering in its ambit
both goods and services. It is single tax on the supply of goods or service, right from the
manufacturer to the consumer where credits of GST input taxes paid at each stage shall be
available in the subsequent stages of value addition, thus, makes GST essentially a tax only on the
value addition at each stage.1 Hence, the final consumer will bear only the GST charged by the
last dealer in the value chain along with set off benefits at all the previous stages. All other indirect
taxes will be abolished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Christianity In China
In the 17th century, European missionaries and trade were allowed in China because of their
scientific and technological knowledge. Because of their stay in China, many missionaries and
traders began to adopt Chinese customs and mix them with Catholicism. A group called The
Society of Jesus served at the Imperial court because of their knowledge of astronomy and
mechanics (). Although the primary goal of the Jesuits was to spread Catholicism, they were greatly
influenced by the Chinese Confucian state (). Many of the Jesuits had adapted to Chinese religious
lifestyles because of its social influence (). An argument began among the Roman Catholic
missionaries because of the mixing of Christian and Chinese beliefs (). These missionaries argued

Despite the above decisions, I have made it clear that other Chinese customs and traditions that can
in no way be interpreted as heathen in nature should be allowed to continue among Chinese
converts. (). Although many Chinese practices and customs were banned to Christians, not every
tradition or custom was considered heathen to the Catholic church. Pope Clement XI stated that the
Chinese customs in managing households and governments should not be interfered with. Only
Chinese customs and traditions that did not contradict with Catholic beliefs could be practiced by
Christians. If any of the traditions or customs became contradictory, they were not tolerated under
any circumstance. Because of Pope Clement s decree, the Kangxi emperor became very angry and
banned Christian missionaries in China. In 1721, the Decree of Kangxi was published and this
document expressed the emperor s anger. Reading this proclamation, I have concluded that the
Westerners are petty indeed. It is impossible to reason with them because they do not understand
larger issues as we understand them in China. (). The pope s decree negatively

However, they are rarely complete models and often outcomes cannot be predicted.
Reintroduction of a theory suggests that new evidence in support of the theory has been

behaviour. The application of the theory can have many elements and it is in the interpretation of

Watching the lion king the next time around I can defiantly look at it with more understanding of
the story behind the lion king. The lion king is an apparent adaptation of Shakespeare s hamlet, by
the theme of revenge and justice. In hamlet, Claudius s murder of King Hamlet initiates Hamlet s

most of all in the first scene you see all the animals gather to see the new prince of the jungle and

The Recession Of The Great Recession
In 2007, the United States economy experienced a financial crisis known as the Great Recession,
which affected much of the world. It officially lasted from December 2007 to June 2009 and all
began with the bursting of an 8 trillion dollar housing bubble. A volatile mixture of financial market
chaos triggered by the housing bubble and low consumer spending left millions of Americans
wondering about their economic fate, the fate of their neighbors, and the fate of the nation.
The Great Recession, from 2007 2009, is the greatest economic downturn since the Great
Depression, from 1929 1939. In spite of its currency, much of the world doesn t know what led up
to the Great Recession, let alone what caused it. This video simplifies the housing crisis and breaks
down the key factors that attributed to the downfall of the financial market. While the recession
only lasted two years, many are still feeling its effects.

Martha Graham And Humphrey
Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey are known as the founders, or the pioneers of modern dance.
They were of the first to begin the modern dance era, after Isadora Duncan. Graham and Humphrey
reshaped the way people looked at dance giving it new meaning. During the 1900 s they defined
modern dance and gave it clear recognizable movements that distinguish it from many other dances
created in the past.
Martha Graham s technique of modern dance consists of very powerful, and emotional
movements. They way she moved her body was very off putting or ugly to those who hadn t seen
this type of dance. She looks rigid and sharp when she moves rather than flowing and elegant like
people were use to seeing in ballet. It was a revolution in motion equal ... Show more content on

She was very interested in the more natural flowing movements and studied dance in simpler
versions. She wanted to remove the dramatic idea in order to focus on the basic principles. One of
her dances, Water Study is actually performed with no music. The dancers use their breath and
natural wave like movements to create the rhythm of the dance. Humphrey generated studies that
focused merely on oppositional and succession movement, rhythm, and the dynamics of falling
(Stodelle 1978). She created the fall and recovery technique, which is similar to Graham s
contraction and release technique. The main elements of her fall and recovery technique are
balance and imbalance (Stodelle 1978). In Humphrey s technique she focuses on the balance, the
breath, and the spacial orientation. When the dancer becomes very off balance they spring into a
new risky direction.
Doris Humphrey and Martha Graham were not close friends, and their views on dance vary.
Martha s view being more impulsive, rigid, and dramatic while Doris s is more flowing and
natural. However there techniques of fall and recovery, and contraction and release are very similar.
They both taught at Denishawn, and performed in some of the concerts at Denishawn (Foulkes,

Size is a physical aspect that could be related to the person s country of origin. Because such
features were mentioned in M. Butterfly, this makes more proof of the show s relation to the
theory of Orientalism. This show and topic could be seen as important to us today because it can
help us face some of the current issues going on in today s society. One example would be the
protests regarding homosexuality. Song was told there was no homosexuality in China despite
his apparent relationship with another man, otherwise known as Gallimard. The gay and lesbian
citizens are becoming to be more open about their sexualities which would be a representation of
the opposite of Gallimard s feelings at the end of the show. He was trying to hide from the fact
that he was in love with a man for the entire time, though he thought he was with a woman.
Because of his previous feelings he was struggling with the thoughts of possibly being gay and
coping with the deceit. This show can show the results of trying to store such strong thoughts
away and trying to hide from them. The results of Gallimard s heartbreak and his bad way of
handling his grief, was killing himself. It was most likely more of a representation of the end of
Madame Butterfly because of the Japanese suicide method and a shout out to the Orientalist ideas
behind the show, but it could be seen to have a different representation that wasn t

Proposal For The City Of Houston
Purpose: The purpose of my proposal is to propose a plan for the city of Houston to consider
becoming a No Kill City and adopt No Kill animal control policy in regards to city run and
funded animal shelters. Specifically, if the city council would consider the policy or a trial of it, it
could be adapted to fit the cityfinancially and effectively with available resources that would save
lives and the city itself money.
Summary:
The purpose of this proposal is to make aware of a large problem the city is facing due to pet over
population and how to resolve without taking the lives of these domesticated animals due to
flaws in our laws, community out reach, and lack of information out there to help pet owners
spread across our city. The problem facing our city is that shelters are filled to capacity everyday
with the majority being lost or stray animals and the only resolutions would be to either put down
close to 100 animals a day or once in a while collaborate with rescues to send then out to other
states in need of adoptable animals. However, the solution is right in front of us. By working with
local rescues, animals wouldn t need to be sacrificed and with proper information and assistance
with spay/neuter programs, unwanted pets would be prevented, lowering the need for euthanizing.
I propose to looking into becoming a No Kill city just as our neighbors, Austin has with much
success. Instead of spending unnecessary money in killing and disposing those animals,

then compared to percentiles relative to other children of the same age and sex. For example, if
a child aged anywhere from 2 19 is more than 85% and less than 95% they are considered
overweight. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009). This tool is not a method used to
diagnosis childhood obesity but it s a valuable way to measure the prevalence of obesity
worldwide. Introduction: In 1998 the World Health Organization announced that obesity had
become an epidemic in both adults and children. This epidemic is a major concern in public
health yet many countries are failing to address the issue. The purpose of this paper is to discuss
the causes contributing to this increasing epidemic of childhood obesity. There are many causes
that factor into childhood obesity but I will focus specifically on genetics, overeating, and the lack
of exercise. Of the many countries struggling to combat obesity Japan came up with their own
solution. The article titled: Japan Has Cut Obesity to 3.5% in a Controversial Way That Wouldn t
Fly in America reveals how the Japanese government implemented the metabo law which went into
effect in 2008, with the goal of reducing the country s overweight population by 25% by 2015. The

Drive In Movie Theater History
History of Drive In Movie Theater Drive in movie theaters were extremely popular during the
1930 through the early 2000 s. Creators, facts, and closed are main points in the history of drive
in movie theaters. Richard Hollingshead made history June 6, 1933, when he opened the first
drive in movie theater in Camden, New Jersey (Cohen). Richard was a sales manager at his dad s
store, Whiz Auto Products (Cohen). The idea for a drive in movie theatercame to him because his
mother would be very uncomfortable when she would sit in theater seats. He experimented in
his own driveway (Cohen), by nailing a screen to a tree, putting a 1928 Kodak projector on the
hood of a car, and using a radio to produce sound ( Drive In Movie History ). He also... Show more

dogs, hamburgers, French fries, and sodas. By 1948, there were about eight hundred and twenty
drive in theaters (Cohen). Mobile concession stands became more popular and started serving a
bigger variety of foods (Cohen). In the late 1940 s and early 1950 s, more families than before
were going to the drive in movie theaters (Cohen). By 1958, there were about four thousand and
sixty four drive ins in the United States and Canada (Cohen). The largest drive in movie theater

Siddhartha was determined to never go back to his life of wealth. Siddhartha approached the same

America s Financial System For The Housing Market
I. Introduction In 2008 America s financial system was brought to a stand still as decades of
negligence and financial decisions caused our economy to sink into the worst recession since the
great depression. Cultivating a problem worse than America has seen in roughly a century points
one finger not at a particular cause, but a string of events that finally gave way. Now, eight years
later our economy is still recovering, and time has allowed us to look back at decades of mistakes to
try and connect the dots of the perfect storm that collapsed our financial market in 2008. In 2009
Brookings Institution, one of Washington s oldest think tanks, concluded there were three causes
that resulted in the crisis. Economists Martin Baily and Douglas Elliot stated that the results of
government intervention in the housing market, the influences Wall Street had on Washington, and
global economic forces were the three main causes of the economic collapse. They believed that a
housing bubble inflated when Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two government sponsored enterprises,
intervened in the housing market. The banking industry was called out to be blamed for years of
manipulation of our political and financial systems. Lastly, Baily and Elliot cite the global economy
and the existence of a credit boom throughout European and Asian nations. Low inflation and
consistent growth throughout the world economy spiked investors interest in acquiring riskier
investments, which encouraged

The Pros And Cons Of Genetic Engineering And Animal Cloning
Tasha Drinnen
Zoology final

Genetic engineering/animal cloning A genetically engineered animal is one that contains altered
genetic material to give the animal new traits or characteristics. There are many animals that have
been genetically modified for example, mice, pigs, cows and sheep are just a few of the animals
they experiment on. Most genetic engineering is directed toward providing more benefits to our
society which can be ethically contentious. In reproductive cloning (animal cloning) researchers
remove a mature skin cell from the animal that they want to copy then, they transfer it into a egg
that has removed its DNA containing nucleus. The clones are superior breeding animals that
will produce healthier offspring. There is both upsides and downsides to genetic engineering
and animal cloning. In the United States animal cloning is regulated by the FDA or, Food and
Drug Administration and for the most part is not considered to be illegal. There are also close to
no laws regulating genetic engineering in animals in the United States. The FDA says that it is
just as safe to eat a cloned animal as it is to eat an animal that was conventionally bred. Cloning
does not modify or manipulate an animals genetics or DNA, it is an exact copy of the animal.
Then the cloned animal is used to help livestock breeders with the reproduction of their most
productive livestock and create healthier offspring. Our society benefits from animal cloning
because, it is

The Safety Of Driving And Driving
Government interference was first introduced under the automobile industry dating back to the
very early 1900s, with a large topic that many people miss when going back into history: the
safety of it all. We, the population of today, are given the ability to drive up to 85mph without
thinking twice about it, our only focus being on the destination. This is recompensed to the
drivers of the twenty first century through the technical advances in firm laws, better drivers
education systems, and safer roads and vehicles. On the other hand, this was not the case a
century ago, nor were drivers given the same luxury just fifty years ago. As the high end,
expensive motorized vehicle for the opulence became cheaper and more common on the streets,
danger risks peeked increasingly year after year. As broad as it may seem, there were only two
things that caused accidents on the road: lack of education when needed in specific situations and
orders to abide by. A century ago, no one thought otherwise when it came to speeding on left turns,
drinking and driving, and following the simplest, safest guidelines that includes just wearing a
seatbelt, and so this is when the government intervenes. Dating all the way back to 1901,
Connecticut was the very first state to enforce a speeding limit on motorized vehicles, an annoying
facet of today s roads from the eyes of our speeding parents. This limited the cars to driving 12 mph
within the cities and 15 mph along country roads. (History.com

Most Scared Descriptive Writing
The Most Scared I ve Ever Been...
It was about two weeks after school got out. It was just a run of the mill kind of Sunday. I
decided to take my usual day long naps that seemed to repeatedly happen during the weekend.
Once I woke up I was determined to go see what my family was up to, so I went up the stairs two
at a time. When I got halfway up the stairs I remembered that I had to go to work in an hour. I
skidded to a stop and barely stopped myself from plunging down the stairs that I had just ran up by
gripping the handrail. Which was gratefully attached to the wall on the right of me. Turning around
so fast that I almost plummeted to my death, I began to scurry back down the stairs. When I

this happen from above as my older sister wrenched the car to the left trying to get away from the
enormous semi truck. I next heard a scream. After realizing that I screamed I put my hands over
my mouth and had the audacity to feel embarrassed even in the scary situation that we were in.
After the trauma of the moment and realizing that we were both okay, I look over to my sister
who is holding the steering wheel like a death grip. I tell her that it was going to be ok and that
she needed to pull off the road, so we found a clear spot to pull off to and then parked the now
battered car. Using my shaking hands I slowly grabbed my phone and after taking a long, deep

Freud And The Ego Ideal Research Paper
According to Freud, the ego ideal is the source of narcissism that relates to repression and the
unconscious, topics explored in his other theories. In this essay, he discusses the ego ideal and
the actual ego. The ego ideal is the representation of what one wants to become. It is the perfect,
idealized version of one s self. The actual ego is the reality of that person. The ego ideal
ultimately serves the pleasure principle. One of the opposing drives Freud presents is the drive
for pleasure. An argument Freud presents in his essay is where does self serving for pleasure end
and fulfilment of responsibilities begin? Our impulses drive us to nourish and protect ourselves.
This drive, part of the pleasure principle, is an effect of the ideal... Show more content on

His ideas of actual love relate to narcissism in regards to the understanding of love. In other
words, love and narcissism seem to go hand in hand. The concept of narcissism was developed in
part by studying psychosis and, pragmatically, narcissism explained the intractability of
psychosis to psychoanalysis (Sharpless, 211). Sharpless uses Freud s theories of narcissism to
not only report the facts, but to use his theories in action. Where does love come from? Where
does narcissism come from? In this essay, Sharpless states the love derives from narcissism, an
idea that is supported by Freud s theories. The use of Freud in this essay concerning romantic love
leads to the conclusion that love comes from the unconscious. Our ego believes that it is
controlling our thoughts and actions. However, it is likely that the unconscious makes the ego
believe this and instead, controls what we think, say, and do without our conscious recognition. If
love is connected to narcissism, Sharpless theorizes that actual love is connected to pain for the
lover. Coming to a happy love and working through the impediments to reach such a state entails
the gaining of self knowledge and a continual modification of one s ego to a state that is likely
commensurable with the lover s (Sharpless, 223).

Alternative Healing Therapies Versus Western Medicine Essay
Alternative Healing Therapies versus Western Medicine
A feeble body makes a feeble mind. I do not know what doctors cure us of, but I know this: they
infect us with very deadly diseases, cowardice, timidity, credulity, the fear of death. What matter if
they make the dead walk, we have no need of corpses; they fail to give us men, and it is men we

I feel that all options should be investigated when it comes to maintaining one s health and healing

have utilized therapies such as acupuncture, Reiki, a plant based Vegan Diet and more to assist me

treats the symptoms and not the cause of the illness. Many people have worsened or even died
because of traditional Western Medicine. I personally know people who have been cured by
Alternative Therapies using acupuncture, diet, and Reiki. Considering that most Eastern Medicine
practice are thousands, even tens of thousands of years old and have been tried and tested over the

whole person treatments. Traditional medicine views disease separate from the individual who

The Value Of Taking Responsibility Essay
The Value in Taking Responsibility During the late 1800 s and early 1900 s a series of laws and
campaigns were instated to prevent forest fires. It was believed that forest fires would greatly
damage the timber industry due to the loss of trees the forests would suffer as a result. The longer
these campaigns persisted, the worse the forest fire breakouts became, and the forests continued to
degrade. Many animals were also displaced and threatened as a result of these intense fires.
Eventually forestry researchers and conservationists started looking at what fires did to the various
ecosystems. They found that fires actually promote the growth of healthier, stronger trees by
burning the weak trees and providing more nutrients for the soil. By suppressing fires, the forests
experienced large amounts of degradation, and many animals were threatened by the loss of
sustainable habitats. Controlled burns every few years actually benefits all the organisms living in
that ecosystem, however, in some places it s nearly impossible to burn. After so many years of fire
suppression the leaf litter has accumulated to such large amounts that any fire started would burn to
hot and high for the forest to survive. Humaninterests often times have profound affects on the
world around them. There are many instances like the above example in which peoples own self
interests end up hurting and degrading the environment around them. In the aftermath of events
such as this, there are many

Theme Of Weather In Catcher In The Rye
We wake up everyday to different weather, either good or bad, however our emotions are
depended upon it. One September day arose, rain was falling and so were my emotions. I felt sad
for no reason, I should have felt happy because it was Saturday, but no matter what happened, I was
down. In the Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger uses weatherto exploit emotion. As rain approaches
many people start to feel depressed, but also content. Holden explains why he believes people
are crazy for leaving the cemetery just because of the rain. He starts to talk about what the
scenery looks like, and how he feels. Holden states It rained on his lousy tombstone, and it rained
on the grass on his stomach. All the visitors that were visiting the cemetery started running like
hell over their cars. That s what really drove me crazy (172). Holden becomes sad as he sees
everyone leave just because of the rain, he feels depressed that people would just leave their
loved ones alone. Holden s emotions are depressing, but he will also show a sign of joy due to
the weather. Holden changes to a happy state of mind as he sees the many parents hide under the
carousel for cover. He talks about feeling happy as he views Phoebe going around and around on
the carousel. He states It began to rain like a bastard. All the parents and mothers and everybody
went over and stood right under the roof of the carousel. I felt so damn happy all of the sudden,
the way Phoebe was going around and around and around (233). Holden will not let the rain
change her happiness, he consumes happiness and feels like he may cry. Overall, rain has
played a key role in showing emotion, but the snow seems to take a different turn on things.
Salinger shows that the cold can pick up emotions to make people feel despondent and lonely.
Holden describes a time in the city when he felt like he had vanished from life. He talks about
crossing the road, but then everytime he would cross he would feel gone. He projects It was kind
of a crazy afternoon, terrifically cold, and no sunout or anything, you would feel like you were
disappearing every time you crossed a road (8). When Holden says he feels like he is disappearing,

The business case may also put forward alternative solutions and identifies assumptions (State of
Victoria, 2010).
The focus of the business case and the level of detail required in a business case will depend on
the size of the business, the impact to the business and the proposal itself (State of Victoria, 2010).
Health and safety is usually seen a as cost or overhead rather than an improvement to productivity
or increase in profit, therefore a health and safety business case is usually based upon one the
following justifications: legal, financial or strategic (Work Safe Australia, 2014).
Requirement for a health and safety business case
As stated there is a tendency in industry to perceive resources dedicated to health and safety
systems as expenditures rather than investments with improvements in health and safety beyond
those required to meet compliance obligations often delayed. Quality systems are easier to justify. It
also remains difficult to convince management of the benefits of investing in health and safety
systems because of a tendency to overestimate the costs associated with implementation and
undervalue the costs associated with system failure (Gahan et al., 2014; Work Safe

The Expectancy Theory
Using an example of your choice apply the expectation theory of motivation. You should consider
both its strengths and weaknesses as a theory. Arguments will be presented to show, how the
expectation theory of motivation can be used to measure the force of motivation for a student to
study, to achieve a high grade in his or her math s test. This example will be relevant as the
expectation theory can look at whether the reward will motivate/not motivate the student, whether
the value of the goal will motivate/not motivate the student, or if the thought high effort will
achieve a high grade will motivate/not motivate the student. В‘The first major expectancy theory
was put forward by victor Harold Vroom in 1964 although later writers, such... Show more content

Although this is not so easy in the case of a lecturer and a student as there is no way to form a
policy to control the reward with a lecturer unfortunately. o Policies the degree to which reward
systems are formalized in written policies has an impact on the individuals Instrumentality
perceptions. Formalized policies linking rewards to performance tend to increase Instrumentality.
The valance refers the value the individual personally places on the rewards. This is a function of
his or her needs and goals. This will depend on how much the student would value a high grade.
Each of the above is given a value. For valence your score can be valued as В–1 (which says the
student doesn t care about his or her grade), 0 (which says the student is in two minds, he or she
would like a high grade but they don t mind too much if it isn t achieved), +1 (which says that
the student really wants to achieve a high grade). For Instrumentality you would give a value
between 0 (which says that there the extra studying and long hours would for instance ruin the
students social life) and +1 (which says that there is a high chance that a good performance will
achieve a high grade). For expectancy you would give a value between 0 (which says you won t
achieve a high grade from high effort) and +1 (which says that you will achieve a high grade from

Benjamin Franklin s Mcteague
One of the first naturalist authors in America was Frank Norris. Benjamin Franklin Frank Norris
Jr. was born on 5th of March, 1870, in Chicago, Illinois, and was the first of five children born to
Gertrude Doggett Norris, an actress and Benjamin Franklin Norris Sr., a wealthy owner of a
wholesale jewelry business. Only two boys beside Frank: Lester (died at age 9) and Charles,
survived infancy. Due to Frank s father s health problems, the Norris family moved to Oakland,
California, in 1882 and the following year settled in San Francisco. He attended a preparatory
school and Boys High School, however neither of which suited his limited interest in schooling.
He was then enrolled San Francisco Art Association, where he studied painting. He studied art in
London and Paris, however, his interest in painting soon waned, and after two years he returned
home. However, during his stay at Paris, he was exposed to the naturalist novels of Emile Zola,
where he decided literature was his vocation. He also had begun to write. His first article,... Show

After marrying Traina, McTeague s luck changes. He loses his job, and they have no money,
expect some that Traina won on a lottery. To get his hands on the money, McTeague kills his wife
(Shmoop). He then meets his own end while fleeing through Death Valley. Many of the
characteristics of a naturalism can be seen in this novel: pessimism, determinism, human greed,
corruption, the struggle for survival, protagonist from a poor background and etc. With this book
and those that followed, Norris joined Theodore Dreiser in the front rank of American

Arguments For And Against Code Switching
The ongoing debate for and against Code switching is demonstrated by reviewing the papers of
Vershawn Young and Rebecca Wheeler. Mr. Young voices his harsh disapproval of code
switching in his paper, Should Writers Use They Own English? (Young 111) . This is offset by
Rebecca Wheeler s gently persuasive technical paper explaining her implementation of Code
switching which she titled, Code Switch to Teach Standard English (Wheeler 108) . After re
reading both papers several times, trying to move past the emotion, and return to the point of
having a US Standard English, I remain with my personal definition of the purpose of US Standard
English as a tool to communicate. Before we delve any further, let me share my understandingof
communications. In the communications industry (think Telephone), there is a simple rule, in
order for successful communication, the sender speaks their thoughts, which the telephone converts
into an electronic signal that travels across a transmission medium, to the receiver s telephone
where the signal is converted back into speech for the receiver to hear. If this process fails at any
point, then communications fails. Applying this to written communications, if the sender writes in
French and the receiver only speaks Japanese, then communications fails because the receiver could
not understand what was written. To overcome this a translator of some form must be engaged to
insure that the sender and receiver utilize the same language. Being more

According to his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, a hero could be anyone. In his book, he introduces ideas that suggest that all stories follow a pattern. He tells us that the hero of the story goes through a 12 step process. They are introduced in their world, presented with tasks and training, face death, and ultimately retrieves some type of treasure. This is true for most stories, Including Harry Potter during the movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Throughout the movie, Harry successfully goes through all of the stages. • 3. Duke s Character In Rigoletto Essay A huge shift has taken place from Act I to Act II as we see the tone develop through following the development of the Duke s character in Rigoletto. However, the contradictions and differences revealed between these arias do not negate the similarities in each aria. Each aria serves a purpose and has revealed unforeseen depths of feeling. These Acts work together to convey the Duke as a complex character. Even with the Duke s drastic change in character in Act II, we still see resemblance of the Duke as the same person from Act I throughout Rigoletto. Compare Act I, where the Duke declares that this woman or that is the same as the many others [he] see around [him] (I.1) with Act II where the Duke exclaims, She was stolen from me (II, 89).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is a brief physical attraction but then she is useless. In Act II, the passage reveals the Duke s manner as more caring and protective. He sees Gilda as a prized object to keep and possess. The fact that she was stolen from him indicates a tone of possessiveness. While the Duke seems to understand Gilda better by seeing her individual characteristics, in both situations he still objectifies women. These arias also relate because in both, the Duke is not aware of his lies and contradictions. In the first arias, the Duke very confidently expresses how he feels about women, declaring, If today this woman pleases me, perhaps tomorrow it will be another. Fidelity...we detest like a cruel disease (I.1). The Duke s language is direct and confident without any doubt giving off a composed and collected spirit. He believes in what he says because his actions after his speech coincide with his words as he moves from woman to woman. I have been researching this park for some time, and I couldn t believe that I was going to spend a few days on these wonderful islands. I got together my tent and my supplies, and I sooner or later headed out the door. The boat arrived bright and early, and I spent this time going over research. When I got off of the boat, I headed to a historic site that I had read about. This place was called Vail and Vickers Island Ranch. It is about 100 years old and it used to hold 3,000 to 7,000 cattle at a time! For the rest of the day, I just kind of wandered around the green filled trails. When I arrived on the boat home, I was very unhappy to be leaving this national park. I had such a good time! I realized then why these beautiful islands are a national treasure. Elmer Gantry however, had a different reason for preaching the word of the lord. Elmer found it convenient to preach about the lord when he knew he could get something in return. He had no ulterior motive than to use the words in the Bible to his advantage to gain something for him. In the film, Elmer sees a good thing in Sister Sharon Falconer s evangelical troupe and cons his way into her tent tabernacle, her graces, and her heart (Weiler, 1960). Elmer used the Bible to get closer to and ultimately to win over Sister Sharon. Elmer Gantry was an opportunistic character. He used religion when it could benefit him. Not only was Gantry opportunistic about religion, but was opportunistic when it came to sex and alcohol as well (Bluestone, 1961). Many people can relate to a character such as Elmer Gantry. When the opportunity arises for something to go in his favor, he grabs the opportunity. Many people may feel the same way today. If an opportunity arises to get something for yourself, you will. • 9. Shiloh, By Bobbie Ann Mason Shiloh , by Bobbie Ann Mason, explores an interesting theme, the distinct parallel between the surface level of what the events of the story are, and the meaning underneath. This parallel is seen throughout the story, from the start when Leroy Moffitt is building craft kits for at first just to pass time, while Norma Jean is lifting weights and working at a Rexall drugstore for the same reason; To later on when Norma says she doesn t know what she s talking about and Leroy thinks that the way to saving his marriage is to come up with a last minute idea. The story engages the theme of the parallellevels through the unstable marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean. The theme of this parallel is shown overtly through the images, descriptions, and characterizations of the log cabins in the story, and of Shiloh. Interestingly, the characters and the world they live in are stuck on the surface, shown through how both Leroy and Norma Jean drift on subjects, and through the names in the story. Norma Jean and Leroy s marriage shows an insight on the theme in action because of how their lack of understanding the inner workings of marriage, which causes them to drift apart and eventually separate. One of the most important things in marriage is the ability to communicate, but neither of them are able to do so on a meaningful level. • 21. Proposal For The City Of Houston Purpose: The purpose of my proposal is to propose a plan for the city of Houston to consider becoming a No Kill City and adopt No Kill animal control policy in regards to city run and funded animal shelters. Specifically, if the city council would consider the policy or a trial of it, it could be adapted to fit the cityfinancially and effectively with available resources that would save lives and the city itself money. Summary: The purpose of this proposal is to make aware of a large problem the city is facing due to pet over population and how to resolve without taking the lives of these domesticated animals due to flaws in our laws, community out reach, and lack of information out there to help pet owners spread across our city. The problem facing our city is that shelters are filled to capacity everyday with the majority being lost or stray animals and the only resolutions would be to either put down close to 100 animals a day or once in a while collaborate with rescues to send then out to other states in need of adoptable animals. However, the solution is right in front of us. By working with local rescues, animals wouldn t need to be sacrificed and with proper information and assistance with spay/neuter programs, unwanted pets would be prevented, lowering the need for euthanizing. Introduction In 2008 America s financial system was brought to a stand still as decades of negligence and financial decisions caused our economy to sink into the worst recession since the great depression. Cultivating a problem worse than America has seen in roughly a century points one finger not at a particular cause, but a string of events that finally gave way. Now, eight years later our economy is still recovering, and time has allowed us to look back at decades of mistakes to try and connect the dots of the perfect storm that collapsed our financial market in 2008. In 2009 Brookings Institution, one of Washington s oldest think tanks, concluded there were three causes that resulted in the crisis. Economists Martin Baily and Douglas Elliot stated that the results of government intervention in the housing market, the influences Wall Street had on Washington, and global economic forces were the three main causes of the economic collapse. They believed that a housing bubble inflated when Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two government sponsored enterprises, intervened in the housing market. The banking industry was called out to be blamed for years of manipulation of our political and financial systems. The Pros And Cons Of Genetic Engineering And Animal Cloning Tasha Drinnen Zoology final 1st hr 12/13/17 Genetic engineering/animal cloning A genetically engineered animal is one that contains altered genetic material to give the animal new traits or characteristics. There are many animals that have been genetically modified for example, mice, pigs, cows and sheep are just a few of the animals they experiment on. Most genetic engineering is directed toward providing more benefits to our society which can be ethically contentious. In reproductive cloning (animal cloning) researchers remove a mature skin cell from the animal that they want to copy then, they transfer it into a egg that has removed its DNA containing nucleus. The clones are superior breeding animals that will produce healthier offspring. There is both upsides and downsides to genetic engineering and animal cloning. In the United States animal cloning is regulated by the FDA or, Food and Drug Administration and for the most part is not considered to be illegal. There are also close to no laws regulating genetic engineering in animals in the United States. The FDA says that it is just as safe to eat a cloned animal as it is to eat an animal that was conventionally bred. Cloning does not modify or manipulate an animals genetics or DNA, it is an exact copy of the animal. Then the cloned animal is used to help livestock breeders with the reproduction of their most productive livestock and create healthier offspring. The Safety Of Driving And Driving Government interference was first introduced under the automobile industry dating back to the very early 1900s, with a large topic that many people miss when going back into history: the safety of it all. We, the population of today, are given the ability to drive up to 85mph without thinking twice about it, our only focus being on the destination. This is recompensed to the drivers of the twenty first century through the technical advances in firm laws, better drivers education systems, and safer roads and vehicles. On the other hand, this was not the case a century ago, nor were drivers given the same luxury just fifty years ago. As the high end, expensive motorized vehicle for the opulence became cheaper and more common on the streets, danger risks peeked increasingly year after year. As broad as it may seem, there were only two things that caused accidents on the road: lack of education when needed in specific situations and orders to abide by. A century ago, no one thought otherwise when it came to speeding on left turns, drinking and driving, and following the simplest, safest guidelines that includes just wearing a seatbelt, and so this is when the government intervenes. Dating all the way back to 1901, Connecticut was the very first state to enforce a speeding limit on motorized vehicles, an annoying facet of today s roads from the eyes of our speeding parents. This limited the cars to driving 12 mph within the cities and 15 mph along country roads. (History.com ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this essay, he discusses the ego ideal and the actual ego. The ego ideal is the representation of what one wants to become. It is the perfect, idealized version of one s self. The actual ego is the reality of that person. The ego ideal ultimately serves the pleasure principle. One of the opposing drives Freud presents is the drive for pleasure. The concept of narcissism was developed in part by studying psychosis and, pragmatically, narcissism explained the intractability of psychosis to psychoanalysis (Sharpless, 211). Sharpless uses Freud s theories of narcissism to not only report the facts, but to use his theories in action. Where does love come from? Where does narcissism come from? In this essay, Sharpless states the love derives from narcissism, an idea that is supported by Freud s theories. The use of Freud in this essay concerning romantic love leads to the conclusion that love comes from the unconscious. Our ego believes that it is controlling our thoughts and actions. However, it is likely that the unconscious makes the ego believe this and instead, controls what we think, say, and do without our conscious recognition. If love is connected to narcissism, Sharpless theorizes that actual love is connected to pain for the lover. Coming to a happy love and working through the impediments to reach such a state entails the gaining of self knowledge and a continual modification of one s ego to a state that is likely commensurable with the lover s (Sharpless, 223). ... On one occasion, a mother and daughter, found themselves taken to the Cairns city police station, charged with offensive behaviour, and then obliged to make their own way back to their vehicles, a good 40 minutes north of Cairns by car. However the last reported raid came about because police simply found themselves with too much time on their hands, the cancellation of the 2001 Surfer s Paradise CHOGM leaving a lot of police rostered and too few duties to go around. Off they went to Buchan s in search of easy convictions, though consequently, an unimpressed magistrate imposed the smallest possible fines while the mayor and tourism operators complained bitterly about the impact of the raid on the local economy. I do not know what doctors cure us of, but I know this: they infect us with very deadly diseases, cowardice, timidity, credulity, the fear of death. What matter if they make the dead walk, we have no need of corpses; they fail to give us men, and it is men we need. Many people have worsened or even died because of traditional Western Medicine. I personally know people who have been cured by Alternative Therapies using acupuncture, diet, and Reiki. Considering that most Eastern Medicine practice are thousands, even tens of thousands of years old and have been tried and tested over the centuries speaks well for their effectiveness. • 41. The Value Of Taking Responsibility Essay The Value in Taking Responsibility During the late 1800 s and early 1900 s a series of laws and campaigns were instated to prevent forest fires. It was believed that forest fires would greatly damage the timber industry due to the loss of trees the forests would suffer as a result. The longer these campaigns persisted, the worse the forest fire breakouts became, and the forests continued to degrade. Many animals were also displaced and threatened as a result of these intense fires. Eventually forestry researchers and conservationists started looking at what fires did to the various ecosystems. They found that fires actually promote the growth of healthier, stronger trees by burning the weak trees and providing more nutrients for the soil. By suppressing fires, the forests experienced large amounts of degradation, and many animals were threatened by the loss of sustainable habitats. Controlled burns every few years actually benefits all the organisms living in that ecosystem, however, in some places it s nearly impossible to burn. After so many years of fire suppression the leaf litter has accumulated to such large amounts that any fire started would burn to hot and high for the forest to survive. Humaninterests often times have profound affects on the world around them. There are many instances like the above example in which peoples own self interests end up hurting and degrading the environment around them. • 42. Theme Of Weather In Catcher In The Rye We wake up everyday to different weather, either good or bad, however our emotions are depended upon it. One September day arose, rain was falling and so were my emotions. I felt sad for no reason, I should have felt happy because it was Saturday, but no matter what happened, I was down. In the Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger uses weatherto exploit emotion. As rain approaches many people start to feel depressed, but also content. Holden explains why he believes people are crazy for leaving the cemetery just because of the rain. He starts to talk about what the scenery looks like, and how he feels. Holden states It rained on his lousy tombstone, and it rained on the grass on his stomach. All the visitors that were visiting the cemetery started running like hell over their cars. That s what really drove me crazy (172). Holden becomes sad as he sees everyone leave just because of the rain, he feels depressed that people would just leave their loved ones alone. Holden s emotions are depressing, but he will also show a sign of joy due to the weather. Holden changes to a happy state of mind as he sees the many parents hide under the carousel for cover. He talks about feeling happy as he views Phoebe going around and around on the carousel. He states It began to rain like a bastard. All the parents and mothers and everybody went over and stood right under the roof of the carousel. I felt so damn happy all of the sudden, the way Phoebe was going around and around and around (233). Holden will not let the rain change her happiness, he consumes happiness and feels like he may cry. Overall, rain has played a key role in showing emotion, but the snow seems to take a different turn on things. Salinger shows that the cold can pick up emotions to make people feel despondent and lonely. Holden describes a time in the city when he felt like he had vanished from life. He talks about crossing the road, but then everytime he would cross he would feel gone. He projects It was kind of a crazy afternoon, terrifically cold, and no sunout or anything, you would feel like you were disappearing every time you crossed a road (8). Arguments will be presented to show, how the expectation theory of motivation can be used to measure the force of motivation for a student to study, to achieve a high grade in his or her math s test. This example will be relevant as the expectation theory can look at whether the reward will motivate/not motivate the student, whether the value of the goal will motivate/not motivate the student, or if the thought high effort will achieve a high grade will motivate/not motivate the student. If this process fails at any point, then communications fails. Applying this to written communications, if the sender writes in French and the receiver only speaks Japanese, then communications fails because the receiver could not understand what was written.
