The Characteristics Of Child-Directed Speech ( CDS )
Talking to children has always been fundamental to language development, but new research
reveals that the way we talk to children is key to building their ability to understand and create
sentences of their own. The exaggerated speech we naturally use with young children is a special
register often called motherese (Medical Xpress , 2011). Moreover, child directed speech (CDS)
plays an important role in language acquisitionbecause while modifying and adjusting speech to a
child, this keeps their attention and meets the needs of providing understanding to the young
addressee.
Child directed speech (CDS), also referred to as infant directed speech (IDS) or motherese is a
speech register that is characterized by pitch and intonation, slower speech rates with pauses in
between words, shorter simple sentences and frequent repetition (O Brien, 2017). Moreover, the
role child directed speech (CDS) plays in language acquisition is that it modifies and adjusts
speech directed to children and keeps their attention as well as meets the needs of providing
understanding to the young addressee (Clarke, p. 45).
This paper will examine the cultural variations embedded in child directed speech (CDS) and how
the characteristics of child directed speech (CDS) differ cross culturally. Specifically, this essay
will show evidence of cultural variation from several case studies by focusing on the differences
and similarities in prosodic characteristics within child directed speech (CDS)

Make Homemade Baby Food Essay
Making Homemade Baby Food
Making homemade baby food is not difficult. It is economically friendly and healthier than
purchasing commercially prepared food for your baby. Baby food recipes range from puree to
recipes incorporating table food into recipes for baby. It takes less time than you think to create
fresh, healthy baby food. Making homemade food assures you and your baby no preservatives are
used and baby is only getting nutritious and tasty food.
Things to Consider when Making Homemade Baby Food
Before making food for your baby, consult with your pediatrician, especially if this is the first
somewhat solid food the baby will be eating. Your pediatrician will suggest foods to introduce to
the baby and what foods should be eaten at specific ages or signs of maturing. If you choose fruits,
vegetables and meat you like; your pediatrician may suggest better ... Show more content on

If the food is heated in a microwave, stir the food thoroughly to make sure there are not hot spots
that could potentially burn your baby s mouth.
The Baby Food Process
After rice based cereal, your baby will most likely move on to pureed fruits, vegetables and meat.
Until you know what your baby will like, buy small quantities of fruits, vegetables and meat, unless
other family members consume lots of fruits, vegetables and meat. After proper washing cut the fruit
and vegetables in half and either boil, steam or bake them. If they are baked, place those in a
baking dish with enough water to almost cover the dish contents. Vegetables and fruit can be
peeled before or after cooking.
Small vegetables such as corn, peas and lima beans do not need to be halved. Bananas can just
be mashed and not cooked at all unless that is your preference. Frozen peas are much easier to
prepare than fresh peas. If preparing meat, make sure all traces of fat are removed and when
cooked, make sure the meat is well done with no trace of

The Implications Of Bank Specialization On Its Financial...
When making a financial analysis on a bank, the type of business it conducts need to be
considered. Specialization can lead a bank to operate in different practices and have a varied
structure of their balance sheet. If the structure and composition of the bank is not to be considered,
financial statement analysis will provide misleading information. This report will investigate the
implications of bankspecialization on its financial statement analysis.
Specialization
Larger banks specialize in customer deposits due to the larger availability of liquidity present as a
result of economies of scale and synergy; small banks tend to specialize in customer loans. To fund
these operations, small banks have a great level of liabilities relative ... Show more content on

When comparing financial analysis of varying banks this can lead to asymmetric information7.
Empirical studies show that specialization does not systematically carry across different sized
banks, however the size of a bank is an important factor.
Banks with subsidiaries tend to specialize in a unique way, the parent bank tends to specialize in
numerous areas, their subsidiaries are structured to specialize in certain fields. For instance in
Luxemburg, parent banks tend to specialize in interbank lending whilst their subsidiaries have seen
interbank activities falling and an increase in customer loans. Facts such as this need to be
considered for financial analysis.8
Size
The size of the bank has a significant impact on its financial statement. Large banks have
comparatively easy access to purchased funds and capital markets compared to small ones9. Large
banks usually use more purchased

Essay on Functionalism in Education
Having attended public schools throughout my childhood and adolescence, I never was familiar
with the term functionalism and its many elements. After observing and analyzing my field
placement classroom I have come to understand the concept of functionalism to some extent. In
general, functionalists see schools as serving to socialize students to adapt to the economic,
political, and social institutions of that society (Feinberg, p.6, 2004). They also theorize that in
order for societies to survive, they must carry out vital functions such as, attaining fundamental
knowledge and acquiring essential skills and proficiency, acknowledging certain norms and values
within their community, and recognizing authority figures. It is also... Show more content on

As soon as their teacher, Mrs. Root asked them to settle down, they instantly became silent. This
is an example of an unspoken expectation of the teacher and is one of many hidden curriculums
that I witnessed in the classroom. Another instance was during instruction; Mrs. Root had asked a
question pertaining to shapes and who ever knew the answer, demonstrated this particular hidden
curriculum by raising their hand. The functionalist concept, hidden curriculum, is best defined as
organizational features and routines of school life that provide the structure needed to develop
the psychological dispositions appropriate for work and citizenship in industrial society
(Feinberg, p. 21, 2004). It is intended to assist in achieving norms, learning one s position in
society, and how to think of oneself. Hidden curriculum has also been explained as making the
transition from family to the real world less difficult. This concept applies to the examples I gave
because when the teacher asked the students to settle down, they instantly knew that they needed
to follow directions. The idea that teachers are authority figures and deserve to be respected is
instilled in children at a very young age and is expected to be upheld. As for students raising their
hands when wanting to speak or answer a question, this has also been implanted in children s
minds and is a norm in today s society. I conducted my second

Job Application
When applying for employment by mail a job application letter must accompany your resume.
Often times an employer may be flooded by perhaps a stack of a hundred or more resumes on any
given day. In such situations, getting an interview can represent a major break through for the job

Writing an effective and powerful job application letter is an integral part of your job search and
crucial to winning a job. Not all job application letters will go directly to an employer. They may
need to go through a third party such as an employment agency, recruitment firm or job network
agency. This section identifies 8 different types of employment or job application letters you
may need in your job search such as prospecting letters for cold calling, letters to generate leads
through networking, and letters of interest to an employment agency: Each job search method
will require you to write a letter with different content. You need to be able to create a message
with irresistible appeal to your target market. An effective job application letter will position you
ahead of the competition and the way you apply for a job will depend upon the job search method
you use. A letter in response to an advertised position is the most common and therefore it is
treated as a separate topic and is treated comprehensively in .Application Letter Advertised Job and

Pastors Brokenness
What marks most pastors who come to our ministry is their brokenness. In every case, pastors
resigning from their church are broken, beaten, and discouraged. Pastorless churches are a
paradoxical development in the United States. While plenty of clergy abound in the US, fifteen
hundred pastors leave the ministry each month due to moral failure, spiritual burnout, or contention
in their churches.
Their stories, along with my own experiences in the pastorate, attest to several common traits
among pastorless churches. Churches who struggle to keep pastors possess similar characteristics
and cultures within their congregations. Here are ten observations:
Clergy Competence. For various reasons, a point is reached when a pastor simply is no longer
competent to hold this most trusted position in the church. Often, it is a matter of disqualification

Many churches suffer from too few families controlling the life of the church. One of my
members once said, It s hard to get in here, but once you re in you re in. To which I replied, And
the Spirit of God weeps.
Competing Boards. Another pastor shared the plight of his church. Within the church existed an
elder board of eight members and a deacon board of eight members. The church barely averaged
300 people in attendance. For years these two boards refused to communicate, cooperate, or
coordinate. Any wonder their church chewed through six pastors in ten years?
Consumed Clergy. Most pastors are just plain worn out. In a recent survey 802 or 71% of
pastors surveyed stated they were burned out, battle depression, and feel fatigue on a daily basis.
Pastors usually keep 60 hour work weeks, are on call at all times, are required to perform multiple
tasks beyond their ability, and put up with a host of abuses from members claiming to be
Christians. Once I took a two week vacation. Upon returning from vacation, several members
accused me of looking for another church to pastor during my

Sexism In Workplace
Sexism in the workplace Throughout human history, the female gender was seen as lesser hen
men. Women were told they couldn t vote until the 1910 s, they were put down for doing jobs
like construction working, mining, and factory work. In fact, the first major push for women in
working class jobs in America wasn t until the 1940s. The main reason for this was that the U.S
needed mass production to beat the Axis powers in World War Two. But things have changed,
right? We are living in the age of equality where men and women are treated as equal, and neither
are put down for their genders. So why is it all over the news about men and women not being

While there are plenty of people backing up the idea of women make 79 cents to every dollar
men make, and in some cases this is true, women do make less because they re women. But you
should know that your media is lying to you. The wage gap isn t nearly as large as it is made out
to be. The equation for the women s pay gap, as told by American Progress s website, calculated
by dividing the median earnings of full time, year round, working women by the median
earnings of full time, year round, working men, all rounded to the nearest $100. The wage gap
looks slightly different depending on which data source is used in the calculation. Now do you
notice anything missing? It does not take in occupation, skill level, previous experiences, pretty
much it doesn t mention anything to do with qualifications for the job. The reason everyone
thinks that the pay gap is a thing is because of the media. They ll Do anything to get the public
riled up that they ignore facts. These big media source outlets get so involved in politics that they
block out any distinct point made. So, to sum up, the wage gap does not exist to the extent
claimed because It does not take in the idea of occupation of the worker, the skill level, the basic
education, and that it doesn t even take in jobs that are low income, for example teachers. The
education field is heavy with women, with the US Department of

Why Is The Screw Sane Or Insane
Sane or Insane?
By Alex Gimenez
Sane or Insane? That is the question, and only the author Henry James knew the answer. There
has been a lot of speculation about The Turn of the Screw, and what makes it so interesting is
that Henry James never tells the reader if the ghosts are real or if the governess is sane or insane.
That leaves the interpretation of the governess mental state up to the reader. The governess is the
one that tells most of the story, and in my opinion, she proves herself to be very unreliable and,
therefore, insane. The reasons why I think the governess was insane are as follows. First, the
governess is the only one in the story who admits to seeing the ghosts. Second, the governess

as she becomes more suspicious and paranoid, one night Flora sneaks out of bed and is staring out
the window at someone outside. The governess thinks she is staring at the ghost of Miss Jessel, but
it is really Miles. This makes the governess even more convinced that something fishy is going
on with Miles, Flora, and the ghosts. From here on out, things quickly get worse and there is a
lot of tension between the governess and Miles. Then, Flora disappears one day, and is found at
the lake where the governess first saw Miss Jessel. After Flora is found, the governess loses it

In this case Maria is considered as a disclosed principal and Maria s receptionist is her agent. A
disclosed principal is defined as a principal whose identity is known by a third party (Clarkson,

recognized her receptionist as an extension of Maria s authority. By referring credit documents

Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson And Edgar Lee Masters
Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Edgar Lee Masters were three literacy scholars, who without
a doubt evolved American literature. They were each able to break the ancient stigmas, and created
supplementary freedom when it came to what a piece of literature can offer. They were known to
speak upon various topics that were recognized as inappropriate within the society, but that didn t
stop them from stating their beliefs. Common similarities that these literacy masters shared
amongst each other were constant themes of death, afterlife and religion. Although these three
themes made a regular occurrence in their pieces of literature, each writer had different views
towards the various themes which were displayed throughout their texts, and pieces of poetries.
Walt Whitmans thoughts towards the topic of religion, and the afterlife was displayed throughout
one of Whitman s most prodigious works, Song of Myself. He intertwines his most deepest, and
intimate beliefs on self spirituality, and death. In section 48 of Song of Myself he mentions that, I
have said that the soul is not more than the body, / And I have said that the body is not more than
the soul, / And nothing, not God, is greater to one than one s self is... (Whitman, Walt) In section
49, Whitman continues to add, And as to you Life I reckon you are the leavings of many deaths,
/ (No doubt I have died myself ten thousand times before.) (Whitman, Walt). It seems as though

Global Warming Is A Global Problem
The reason why, I decided to focus on global warming is because it doesn t just affect one person
it affects everyone as a national crisis. Numerous individuals don t believe in global warming, but
to scientist this is a big dilemma. In the article, closer looks at climate change, it s specified that
these issues are not new, they have been around forever (Schmidt, 2010). In the article the real case
against activist global warming, has gotten the response of the president of the United States
(Schmidt, 2010). Obama has stated, this problem is real (Schmidt, 2010). So, perhaps for this
political fact coming from our current president, will have the effects in human change of
individual s views.
According to Stefan Rahmstorf, he indicates that scientist do believe in global warming know a
day, because of massive climate changes (Schmidt, 2010). Individuals believe that global warming
comes from one thing only, but it actually comes from many different gases. There is carbon dioxide
, water vapor, choroflurorcarbons, methane, and nitrogen dioxide (Stojanovic, Pejovic Milosevic,
2013). According to the Hub Page explanation, is that carbon dioxide is admitted into our
atmosphere from cement (Eswar, 2010). Human s put various amounts of carbon dioxide into the

Solar Energy Is The Conversion Of Power From The Sun
Research Paper Solar Energy
Blakely J. Phillips
BGEN 440, Montana State University Billings
Introduction
Solar energy is the conversion of power from the sun to usable electricity (Alternative Energy,
2014). The most common source of solar energy utilizes photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into
electricity (Alternative Energy, 2014). Photovoltaics use a semi conductor to absorb the radiation
from the sun, creating and emitting electrons, which are then harnessed and used as electricity
(Alternative Energy, 2014).
Pros of Solar Energy There are many advantages of using solar energy. It is renewable, abundant,
sustainable, environmentally friendly, and more. Solar energy is a renewable energysource, which
means that unlike non renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels, coal, and nuclear energy,
we cannot run out of solar energy (Maehlum, 2014). As long as the sun is alive, which according
to NASA is another 6.5 billion years, we will have access to solar energy (Maehlum, 2014). The
true potential of solar energy is astounding and overly abundant. The surface of Earth receives
120,000 terawatts of solar radiation, better known as sunlight, which is 20,000 times more energy
than what is needed to supply power to the entire world (Maehlum, 2014).
Solar energy is not only abundant and renewable it is also sustainable and environmentally friendly.
As a sustainable energy source, solar energy is able to meet the needs of the present without
compromising

The Emperor s New Clothes By Hans Chrisitian Andersen
Growing up most of us were tucked into bed and our parents read us a story before going to
sleep, fairy tales in most cases. I personally remember hearing all about princess , dragons and cute
mystical creatures that always had a happy ending no matter how much they went though to get
there. After reading the fairy tales in our text book i initially thought they were a little too grusm
and inapporpiate for children but after analyzing them and thinking things through i concluded that
fairy tales are more appropiate for children rather than adults. I believe fairy tales are very
benifical for kids because they teach children right from wrong , help children build emotional
resiliency and lastly they help them develop critical thinking skills.... Show more content on

The story begins by introducing us to a vain and selfish emperor whose only intrest was wearing
as well as owing the best clothes. One day two swindlers visited the emperors palace ,these two
swindlers told everyone that they were weavers and that they could weave the most marvellous
clothing. Not only was there clothing beatiful and extrodinary but it was also unique. The
clothing made by these two weavers had the quality of being invinsable to anyone who was
stupid . These two weavers ordered the finest materials in order to descieve everyone in the
palace and then secretly sold them to get money. After the weavers began sewing the emperor
sent his most loyal servants to check up on them and although they did not see anything they lied
and told the emperor that they saw magical fabrics. At the end of the story the emperor decided
to go ahead and see these magical fabrics along with his servants but everyone there was too
afraid to say that they saw nothing because they feared being called stupid or unfit for their job.
The emperor took all of his clothing off and the conmen dressed him in the invisible clothing. No
one said absoultly anything and stoof their admiring the clothing until a little boy yelled out that the
Emperor had no clothes on. This fairy tale teaches children how to devlop the skill of critical
thinking through the example it provides. The story teaches children that they must come up with
their own ideas and thoughts and not just go along with what everyone else is saying because we

Tragic Events In Remembering The Great Depression
The great depression was a very difficult time for the entire world. This tragic event started in the
United States but it spread through the whole world and millions of people were affected. Many
bad things happened because of this event but eventually it was solved. The articles Remembering
the Great Depressionand FDR s Inaugural Address both go over this topic and show how this
tragic event took place. However, there are many great things that can be learned from an event like
this.
In the article Remembering the Great Depression , it told about the events that unfolded during
the Great Depression. Many people lost their jobs and some even lost their homes because of it.
The stock market fell which made the people who were invested in it lose their money as well as
the banks that people were invested in. This caused companies and factories to close which
many people were employed at. The current president at that time thought that it wasn t the
government s problem to deal with the poor. However, the governor of New York at that time
disagreed and did everything in his power to help. He created organizations to help create jobs in
the government for people and to help distribute goods. This was a good learning experience for
people because it showed that we are capable of rising above the problems going on in the world
and to help one another no matter what our differences are. ... Show more content on

Review Of The Defense Of Globalisation
BOOK REVIEW : IN DEFENSE OF GLOBALISATION
INTRODUCTION:
The subject of globalization can trigger a wide range of responses when brought up in a discussion.
To its supporters, globalization represents advancement, monetary development, and promotes a
better future. To its critics, it connotes greed, exploitation, and corruption. These assorted qualities
of perspectives is maybe due to the way that globalization is naturally intricate and includes
distinctive financial and social subtleties at different national and worldwide levels. Understanding
globalization, in this manner, obliges one to perceive how these variables interrelate and impact
each other. One text that makes a successful job of investigating these complex connections is
Jagdish Bhagwati s In Defense of Globalization.
Bhagwati, a Columbia University economics professor and author of numerous books on trade,
makes all the right economic arguments, however without the flurry of factual connections
frequently used to put forth the defense. Rather, he recounts the narrative of how globalization has
conveyed a superior way of life in less developed nations, and how experiments with different
avenues regarding protectionist import substitution policies have deliberately failed. However
unlike numerous other texts on this subject, Bhagwati s presentation does not address the issue
from a principally emotional point of view. Also, he doesn t present his points right and those of
his adversaries as

Hank Gray Family
The Conglomerate Entrepreneur A family s purpose is teach children morals as they are raised.
Entrepreneurship is often an overlooked trait that is deeply rooted in family values. An
entrepreneur is defined as a person who starts a business and is willing to risk loss in order to
make money (Merriam Webster). Not everyone is meant, or is willing, to be one, but most
successful entrepreneurs have a lot of their good habits originating from their childhoods.
Therefore, parents should give opportunities and promote entrepreneurship, if their child is one of
the few people cut out to be an entrepreneur.
Both of the people I interviewed, Hank Gray and Babe Hyett, were entrepreneurs. Hank Gray
was seeking a long term career when he was offered to buyout a machine shop from an older
man. After accepting the offer, Hank expected developed the company and eventually named it
Gray Machine and Welding. The business has not only provided a great career for him, but also
for his son who now manages the company. When I asked Hank what his family contributed to
his success, he said his father taught him how to work, be responsible, and be honest. These
traits he held true to and his business has grown over the years by word of mouth. Hank is a good
example of a person who did his best at everything, and as a result, never had to look for work after
he started his business.

The Reasons Why Colonists Were Colonists From The British...
The Patriots wanted freedom from the British and the loyalists were loyal to the British There
were many different reasons why colonists were revolutionaries or loyalists. Sometimes they

the revolutionary side. If their rivals were the ones who came up with the idea of independence,
they are known as loyalists because of their rivalry with the revolutionists. Some people felt it

The most famous patriot at the time was probably the first President of the United States George
Washington who led the Continental Army. Other famous Patriots included Paul Revere, Samuel

famous loyalists as there are Patriots. Benedict Arnold was a general in the Continental Army who
fought for the British. Another example of a loyalist was Joseph Galloway who was the
Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress but later started to work for the British army.
Other famous loyalists could be Thomas Hutchinson (the governor of Massachusetts colony),

Francis And Al-Kamil
Francis and al Kamil shared stories of faith with one another. They met regularly and discussed
matters of faith. Although the two did not share the exact same beliefs, they grew a profound

By 1220, the order numbered five thousand friars and needed to be governed more cogently.
Francis could no longer handle the duties of overseeing so many people, so Pope Honorius III

through uncontrollable gambling.
Angie Bachmann mother of 3 children, got addicted to gambling felt lonely at home, when her
husband went to work and children went to school. Bachmann had gotten married young and had
become pregnant almost right away. She had never held down a meaningful job. One morning,

Columbus Day And The Columbus Day
Christopher Columbus is an Italian navigator who sailed west from Spain in 1492. He was in
search for the Indies(India, China and Japan) through the waters due to hostile armies and long
distances on land. Columbus thought he landed in the Indies when he actually landed in the
Bahamas, welcomed in by the Taino(Native Americans). However, Columbus did not go there to
spread Christianity, he forced the Taino into slavery, looting them, spreading deadly diseases that
killed many Natives, and taking their land (causing other people to come to the Americas).
However, Columbus day is celebrated by Americans thanking Columbus for finding America, but
should we celebrate a man for terrorizing Native Americans? In addition, to all of this chaos, there
is a huge debate going on if Confederate monuments should be allowed to stand or be taken down.
These monuments come from the American Civil War, the North(Union) versus the
South(Confederates). The South relied heavily on agriculture, using slaves to harvest their
cotton. Some historians say that the South wanted to keep slavery, while others say that the
South fought mostly for the right to decide their own affairs. Even though the North won, the
South made monuments to make Confederate soldiers be portrayed as selfless heroes(no
monuments have anything about pro slavery). Columbus day should be celebrated and the
Confederate monuments should stay because people cannot forget their history, people respect
these things for different reasons, and people do not know the real reason to why Columbus day
and Confederate monuments are really celebrated for. The Civil War and Columbus finding the
Americas will always be in our history and can never be changed even if we try. Professor Leo
Killsback of Arizona State University talked of how Columbus Day is not a time of celebration
but a reminder of historic crimes against Native Americans ; while Laura Anastasia; the author of
the article Monumental Battle , she gives an insight in how We haven t really dealt with the
legacy of the Civil War and slavery . How us, Americans supposed to learn from our mistakes and

Ezekiel Rebellions
Ezekiel is the last book of the major prophets. He prophesized sometime around 586 BC/E before
he was taken into exile in 597 BC/E in the second exile of Nebuchadnezzar (ETOT pg. 408).
Most of the evidence found throughout the bible leads us to believe that Ezekiel is the author of
this book. The book begins with Ezekiel accusing the Israelites of rebellions. Ezekiel is called to
warn the Israelites because God is planning a new attack that is just as bad as the first exile.

A Comparison of Oedipus and Odysseus Essay
Similarities Between Oedipus and Odyssues
Since the beginning of time epic tales have been passed on from generation to generation as a form
of entertainment. Even though each epic is different in its plot, every epic has certain features in
common. The prime example of their similarities is their main character, the hero of the epic. The
hero s behavior changes from the beginning to the end of the tale. Since the plot revolves around
the epic hero, in most cases, they are made to seem God like, or larger then life, in their capabilities
and strengths. The hero constantly has to conquer major obstacles to achieve their initial and final

murder of her husband succeeded. Agamemnon does not want Odysseus to face the same
consequences he faced. Odysseus is following this advice even before Agamemnon gave it to
him. Odysseus never told a stranger who he really was. He always made up a story of where he
was from and who is. Then he would bring up the name Odysseus to see what they really thought
of him. He did not want to put himself in danger if the person did not like him. When he returns to
Ithaca he also did this to his wife, Penelope. Athena turned him into a beggar. Penelope approached
him in this form and asked about her distant husband. When Odysseus said, He is still alive, a tear

Why did women face barriers in their education and...
Throughout history, the role of women has often carried a prejudice which has been embedded
within society politically, socially and financially across the world. Although arguably one of the
most liberal countries constitutionally, such chauvinism has indeed occurred within Britain,
particularly during the Victorian Era. This restricted participation for women can be exemplified
clearly in two main areas; education and politics. With universal compulsory education in Britain
only being constitutionally enforced with the 1870 Education Act1, women had little opportunity to
gain any form of coherent education in the early 19 th century; tuition was largely confined to the
upper class, and even then, through instruction of private... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Acting as figurehead of the family, it was the man s opinion, and thus, his vote, that represented the
opinions shared by the entirety of the family, including that of his wife. Even so, women still
proved they could be active politically without having the ability to vote; highlighted by their
involvement in the Chartist movement. Throughout the movement, thousands of women joined
chartist societies, and by actively campaigning, gave themselves a political voice and helped

movement failed in achieving its aims, undermining the political involvement and affect of the
women involved. Therefore, due to the traditional family values endorsed by the church, women
were pressured to marry, losing their opportunity to vote, or qualify to, and thus, a chance to
participate in Victorian society politically.

Male Dominance over Female characters in John Harwood s novel, The Asylum
Today s society perceives women to be stronger and dominant individuals in comparison to men,
although, in reality, there are numerous circumstances in which men exhibit more power and
control over the important decisions in women s lives. In his novel, The Asylum, John Harwood
portrays the ways in which men exert power over women through the relationships between Rosina
and her father as well as Dr. Straker and Georgina. Through the characters of Rosina and Georgina,
Harwood depicts that women face many insecurities which ultimately causes the relationships ...

Rather than admitting her true feelings, Rosina gives her consent for the alliance in order to please
her father due to her fear of him, exemplifying that her diffident personality in the novel leads to
the tenuous bonds between them both. Furthermore, Rosina s father s obedience leads him to
become very stern towards Rosina s freedom as Your [Rosina s] duty is to obey me, and you will
learn to like him [Mr. Bradstone] because I wish it... Until then, as I say, you are to remain
outdoors: I have given orders to ensure that you do. Disobey me in this, and you will be confined
to your room (135 136). Thomas s ascendancy over his daughter s decisions is evident as he is
very strict and intimidating, Rosina must obey commands in order to live with him or else there are
bound to be dire consequences. Instead of fighting for her rights and freedom, Rosina feebly agrees
to her father s instructions, thus reinforcing the one sided relationship between both father and
daughter.
Moving on, Georgina and Dr. Straker s bond also begins to diminish as Dr. Straker s dominance
over Georgina s confinement at Tregannon Asylum eventually leads to the loss of control over her
decisions. First and foremost, at the asylum, Georgina wakes up to find her

Essay about The Visual Culture
The Visual Culture
Over the past few decades, enhancements in the visual fields have greatly improved, giving
weight on the importance of visual material in text. Something that is more visually stimulating
can usually make a text more convincing or credible. The term seeing is believing proves this
fact. As humans, we tend to believe something if we can actually see it, which is why Jay David
Bolter has referred to this phenomenon of the changed role of text and graphics as the visual culture
in his book Writing Space. Mere words no longer seemed adequate; they had to share their space
with images. (Bolter, 69).
As Bolter describes the visual culture that we are immersed in, in this day and age, ... Show more

An example is that of headlines in the news. In such headlines that use visual metaphors, there is
usually a visual image and the point is to turn the analytic content of the headline into something
sensual. The image is merely used to confirm the puns of words that are being used in headlines
and other things. Bolter says, The dialectic of word and image in... advertisements can be
commonplace or sophisticated, but in each case there is a changed relationship in which the image
is magnified at the expense of the prose. Words no longer seems to carry conviction without the
reappearance as a picture of the imagery that was latent in them, (Bolter, 54).
Interesting, too, is the fact that Bolter mentions emotional tactics involved in emails and instant
messaging. How fascinating it is to realize that we have actually put different emotional faces to
express how we are speaking through IM s and e mails. To think that we have come so far in this
visual culture that we need icons and pictures to express how we are feeling through writing. As if
the text was not enough to describe how we are feeling, it is far more simpler to just use images
like these: J or L.
There are some negatives to the use of images along with textual writing. With our new

Government Regulation By The Private Sector Essay
Introduction
Today, our nation is under constant attack by hackers, terrorist groups and other enemies.
Unfortunately regardless of how innovative our government or private sectors have become with
securing the network systems, the frequency and intensity of the attacks have only increased. Over
the last decade, security breaches and cyber attacks have highlighted how dependent our nation is
on its critical infrastructure. It was concluded that a total of 54% of cyber attacks targeted the US
in 2013 (Watkins, n.d). Through experiences such as September 11, 2001, it has become apparent
how interconnected our infrastructure is and the exposure to targeted attacks we face as a nation
(Katen, 2004). With the private industry owning over 85% of our nation s critical infrastructure, it
is important for the government to create and maintain regulations which should be followed by all
agencies and private sectors in order to protect our national security. There are several concerns
about government regulation by the private sector and how it will affect their consumers privacy
and the company s finances. However, the Cybersecurity Act of 2015 ensures user s privacy while
sharing information between companies and agencies. Furthermore, there are several effects on
national security resulting from failure to comply with government regulation, meeting only the
minimum requirements and exceeding the minimum requirement. With that being said, it has
become part of the private

Controversial Benefits Of Maternity And Paternity Leave
Maternity and Paternity leave are controversial benefits that only some working men and women
across the world receive. The length or payment of maternity and paternity leave depends on the
country or even the company the employee works in. Most working people are completely for
maternity and paternity leave, because it allows for families to adapt to and care for the new baby
in their home. In general, people against maternityand paternityleave claim it is bad for businesses
and the economy in general. Maternity and paternity leave are times when employees leave work
to deliver or care for a newly born child. Most people are for maternity and paternity leave, because
working parents need money from working and typically want to be able... Show more content on

Murphy makes a case stating these leaves simply hurt women. Murphy s main points are that
maternity leave is bad for business, because it is too expensive for them, and bad for women,
because companies will not want to hire or promote women if they have to go without them for
months and pay them for that time away. The K and K article claims essentially the same things
about maternity leave, but both are misleading. First, maternity leave is not bad for businesses,
because, as shown in the study by Arnarson et al., parental leaves actually promote work
productivity and leads to more women joining the workforce overall. Secondly, it is against the law,
in the United States and many other countries, for companies to not hire somebody, because they
are a woman or because they are pregnant. Therefore, that argument is completely insignificant
anyway. Most arguments against parental leave are not applicable or are incorrect, as shown by all
of the studies mentioned

The Current Economic Environment Of Lean Manufacturing
The current economic environment we are in, shared with increasing guidelines has placed
manufacturers in the challenging position of having to reduce waste, improve processes, and
increase productivity. Although lean manufacturing can well enough be the answer, some
companies have found lean manufacturing implementation to be an ongoing battle. Which is not to
say, however, that there have not been some major success stories. There are many obstacles to lean
implementations.
Two Major Obstacles for Lean Manufacturing Implementation
One obstacle is the perception that the use of lean manufacturing solutions is, at best, nothing more
than a trend. In addition, at worst, a brief craze. It is often observed as nothing more than a
repackaging of fundamental industrial engineering principles dressed up in new clothes, and
flaunted in new terms to appeal to a new industry. Lean manufacturing is sometimes seen in many
industries as a collection of techniques, known to be effective in the auto industry, which some
people are now trying to impose on a completely different industry. This means that perceptions
have to be changed.
Another major obstacle is gaining management and employee buy in. For example, decreasing
batch size is easy to see and not hard to influence in most industries. However, in many industries,
altering batch size also involves reducing the size of the blend, which, in turn, runs into renewed
testing, and several layers of approval. There will, of

1.1 Explain The Concept Of Safeguarding
The concept of safeguarding includes many different factors. A major one of these is family
circumstances. When looking at the parents/carers of children, the health of those in charge can be
a very important factor when looking at the wellbeing of children. Parents who may be struggling
due to their own health problems, either physical or mental, may as a result have difficulty in
caring for their own children. In some circumstances, parents/carers may be struggling with
substance misuse and drug addiction. This may result in a failure to provide for their
childrenâ€TMs needs adequately or even just to provide a safe home environment. A parents
/carer responsibilities in relation to their children involve many important decisions such as the
nutritional value of their meals, access to health services... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Poverty is another factor child protection within the wider field of safeguarding children. Poverty
can have very damaging effects upon the health and overall wellbeing of children. Growing up
within poverty can mean being cold, hungry and not being able to join in with social activities with
their friends. A study by the Child Poverty Action Group, (CPAG), found that 3.5 million children
are living in poverty in the UK and that children from low income families are more likely to die at
birth, suffer chronic illness during childhood or have a disability. They also found that children
living in poverty are almost twice as likely to live in bad, unsuitable housing which has a
significant impact upon their physical and mental wellbeing as well as impacting upon their
educational progress. (CPAG 2013)
When looking at child protection within the wider field of safeguarding, cultural practices need to
be taken in to account. There are some cultural practices within some countries that are considered
to be a form of exploitation by many international organisations. In some parts of the world,

The Role Of Catherine Martin In The Great Gatsby
As for costuming in The Great Gatsby, Catherine Martin was challenged with outfitting a huge
cast. When Baz Luhrmann first decided to adapt F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsbyfor the
screen nine years ago, no one was less enthusiastic about the venture than the filmmaker s wife
and longtime production and costume designer, Catherine Martin. As an Australian teenager, I
really did not connect with the book, Martin admitted to us. I said to Baz, Why would you want
to do that novel?! It s so boring! Baz Luhrmann convinced her to re read the book and then Martin
became the books biggest fan. There was one line in particular that inspired her visually. I love the

Star Wars Attack Of The Clones Essay
If ever a film was regrettably viewed, it would be Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
Regularly regarded as the worst in the series, Clones holds the title for most wooden acting, bad
writing, unwanted CGI, and awkward moments ever seen in big budget sci fi. Even the action, as
extensive it was, had a lack of thrill, simply because the human variant relied too heavily on their
CGI partner. However, the filmis canon. We witness Anakin carve himself a path that will lead to
his inevitable end in the Dark Side; a forbidden romance of Jedi and Senator. We see the story that
brings about the beginnings of Luke and Leia. Narratively, this movie is important, but viewing
wise, it s just bad. First off, the action sequences, hyped as they... Show more content on

Either due to the acting or the writing, Anakin Skywalker wasn t done well. First, old Ben
Kenobi said to a young Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope, He was a good friend , yet,
in Attack of the Clones Anakin continuously flips between rejecting Obi Wan and relying on the
man as a father figure, saying, It s all Obi Wan s fault. He s jealous. He s holding me back ,
leaving a rather frustrated and strained relationship in their wake (Anakin). The boy has a
misguided view on his own importance, believing that his status alone as the Chosen One should
be enough for him to be placed high in the ranks in the Jedi Order. Thus, this gives Anakin the
reasoning that he is above the Jedi s rules. His romance with Senator Padme Amidala, questionable
at best, stems from the resentment he holds for his fellow Jedi. Where are the parallels between
Anakin and Vader? In the Original trilogy, Obi Wan showed admiration towards the Jedi that was
Anakin Skywalker, but this is not the cunning warrior that Old Ben described to Luke. In Attack of
the Clones Anakin s fall was painfully obvious, as it was written, acted, and directed

  • 2. The Characteristics Of Child-Directed Speech ( CDS ) Talking to children has always been fundamental to language development, but new research reveals that the way we talk to children is key to building their ability to understand and create sentences of their own. The exaggerated speech we naturally use with young children is a special register often called motherese (Medical Xpress , 2011). Moreover, child directed speech (CDS) plays an important role in language acquisitionbecause while modifying and adjusting speech to a child, this keeps their attention and meets the needs of providing understanding to the young addressee. Child directed speech (CDS), also referred to as infant directed speech (IDS) or motherese is a speech register that is characterized by pitch and intonation, slower speech rates with pauses in between words, shorter simple sentences and frequent repetition (O Brien, 2017). Moreover, the role child directed speech (CDS) plays in language acquisition is that it modifies and adjusts speech directed to children and keeps their attention as well as meets the needs of providing understanding to the young addressee (Clarke, p. 45). This paper will examine the cultural variations embedded in child directed speech (CDS) and how the characteristics of child directed speech (CDS) differ cross culturally. Specifically, this essay will show evidence of cultural variation from several case studies by focusing on the differences and similarities in prosodic characteristics within child directed speech (CDS) ... After observing and analyzing my field placement classroom I have come to understand the concept of functionalism to some extent. In general, functionalists see schools as serving to socialize students to adapt to the economic, political, and social institutions of that society (Feinberg, p.6, 2004). They also theorize that in order for societies to survive, they must carry out vital functions such as, attaining fundamental knowledge and acquiring essential skills and proficiency, acknowledging certain norms and values within their community, and recognizing authority figures. This is an example of an unspoken expectation of the teacher and is one of many hidden curriculums that I witnessed in the classroom. Another instance was during instruction; Mrs. Root had asked a question pertaining to shapes and who ever knew the answer, demonstrated this particular hidden curriculum by raising their hand. The functionalist concept, hidden curriculum, is best defined as organizational features and routines of school life that provide the structure needed to develop the psychological dispositions appropriate for work and citizenship in industrial society (Feinberg, p. 21, 2004). It is intended to assist in achieving norms, learning one s position in society, and how to think of oneself. Hidden curriculum has also been explained as making the transition from family to the real world less difficult. This concept applies to the examples I gave because when the teacher asked the students to settle down, they instantly knew that they needed to follow directions. The idea that teachers are authority figures and deserve to be respected is instilled in children at a very young age and is expected to be upheld. As for students raising their hands when wanting to speak or answer a question, this has also been implanted in children s minds and is a norm in today s society. I conducted my second ... • 25. Solar Energy Is The Conversion Of Power From The Sun Research Paper Solar Energy Blakely J. Phillips BGEN 440, Montana State University Billings Introduction Solar energy is the conversion of power from the sun to usable electricity (Alternative Energy, 2014). The most common source of solar energy utilizes photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity (Alternative Energy, 2014). Photovoltaics use a semi conductor to absorb the radiation from the sun, creating and emitting electrons, which are then harnessed and used as electricity (Alternative Energy, 2014). Pros of Solar Energy There are many advantages of using solar energy. It is renewable, abundant, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and more. Solar energy is a renewable energysource, which means that unlike non renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels, coal, and nuclear energy, we cannot run out of solar energy (Maehlum, 2014). As long as the sun is alive, which according to NASA is another 6.5 billion years, we will have access to solar energy (Maehlum, 2014). The true potential of solar energy is astounding and overly abundant. The surface of Earth receives 120,000 terawatts of solar radiation, better known as sunlight, which is 20,000 times more energy than what is needed to supply power to the entire world (Maehlum, 2014). Solar energy is not only abundant and renewable it is also sustainable and environmentally friendly. As a sustainable energy source, solar energy is able to meet the needs of the present without compromising ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After reading the fairy tales in our text book i initially thought they were a little too grusm and inapporpiate for children but after analyzing them and thinking things through i concluded that fairy tales are more appropiate for children rather than adults. • 31. Review Of The Defense Of Globalisation BOOK REVIEW : IN DEFENSE OF GLOBALISATION INTRODUCTION: The subject of globalization can trigger a wide range of responses when brought up in a discussion. To its supporters, globalization represents advancement, monetary development, and promotes a better future. To its critics, it connotes greed, exploitation, and corruption. These assorted qualities of perspectives is maybe due to the way that globalization is naturally intricate and includes distinctive financial and social subtleties at different national and worldwide levels. Understanding globalization, in this manner, obliges one to perceive how these variables interrelate and impact each other. One text that makes a successful job of investigating these complex connections is Jagdish Bhagwati s In Defense of Globalization. Bhagwati, a Columbia University economics professor and author of numerous books on trade, makes all the right economic arguments, however without the flurry of factual connections frequently used to put forth the defense. Rather, he recounts the narrative of how globalization has conveyed a superior way of life in less developed nations, and how experiments with different avenues regarding protectionist import substitution policies have deliberately failed. However unlike numerous other texts on this subject, Bhagwati s presentation does not address the issue from a principally emotional point of view. • 37. Columbus Day And The Columbus Day Christopher Columbus is an Italian navigator who sailed west from Spain in 1492. He was in search for the Indies(India, China and Japan) through the waters due to hostile armies and long distances on land. Columbus thought he landed in the Indies when he actually landed in the Bahamas, welcomed in by the Taino(Native Americans). However, Columbus did not go there to spread Christianity, he forced the Taino into slavery, looting them, spreading deadly diseases that killed many Natives, and taking their land (causing other people to come to the Americas). However, Columbus day is celebrated by Americans thanking Columbus for finding America, but should we celebrate a man for terrorizing Native Americans? In addition, to all of this chaos, there is a huge debate going on if Confederate monuments should be allowed to stand or be taken down. These monuments come from the American Civil War, the North(Union) versus the South(Confederates). The South relied heavily on agriculture, using slaves to harvest their cotton. Some historians say that the South wanted to keep slavery, while others say that the South fought mostly for the right to decide their own affairs. Even though the North won, the South made monuments to make Confederate soldiers be portrayed as selfless heroes(no monuments have anything about pro slavery). Columbus day should be celebrated and the Confederate monuments should stay because people cannot forget their history, people respect these things for different reasons, and people do not know the real reason to why Columbus day and Confederate monuments are really celebrated for. The Civil War and Columbus finding the Americas will always be in our history and can never be changed even if we try. Essay about The Visual Culture The Visual Culture Over the past few decades, enhancements in the visual fields have greatly improved, giving weight on the importance of visual material in text. Something that is more visually stimulating can usually make a text more convincing or credible. The term seeing is believing proves this fact. As humans, we tend to believe something if we can actually see it, which is why Jay David Bolter has referred to this phenomenon of the changed role of text and graphics as the visual culture in his book Writing Space. Mere words no longer seemed adequate; they had to share their space with images. (Bolter, 69). As Bolter describes the visual culture that we are immersed in, in this day and age, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example is that of headlines in the news. In such headlines that use visual metaphors, there is usually a visual image and the point is to turn the analytic content of the headline into something sensual. The image is merely used to confirm the puns of words that are being used in headlines and other things. Bolter says, The dialectic of word and image in... advertisements can be commonplace or sophisticated, but in each case there is a changed relationship in which the image is magnified at the expense of the prose. Words no longer seems to carry conviction without the reappearance as a picture of the imagery that was latent in them, (Bolter, 54). Interesting, too, is the fact that Bolter mentions emotional tactics involved in emails and instant messaging. How fascinating it is to realize that we have actually put different emotional faces to express how we are speaking through IM s and e mails. To think that we have come so far in this visual culture that we need icons and pictures to express how we are feeling through writing. As if the text was not enough to describe how we are feeling, it is far more simpler to just use images like these: J or L. There are some negatives to the use of images along with textual writing. • 45. Government Regulation By The Private Sector Essay Introduction Today, our nation is under constant attack by hackers, terrorist groups and other enemies. Unfortunately regardless of how innovative our government or private sectors have become with securing the network systems, the frequency and intensity of the attacks have only increased. Over the last decade, security breaches and cyber attacks have highlighted how dependent our nation is on its critical infrastructure. It was concluded that a total of 54% of cyber attacks targeted the US in 2013 (Watkins, n.d). Through experiences such as September 11, 2001, it has become apparent how interconnected our infrastructure is and the exposure to targeted attacks we face as a nation (Katen, 2004). With the private industry owning over 85% of our nation s critical infrastructure, it is important for the government to create and maintain regulations which should be followed by all agencies and private sectors in order to protect our national security. There are several concerns about government regulation by the private sector and how it will affect their consumers privacy and the company s finances. However, the Cybersecurity Act of 2015 ensures user s privacy while sharing information between companies and agencies. Furthermore, there are several effects on national security resulting from failure to comply with government regulation, meeting only the minimum requirements and exceeding the minimum requirement. With that being said, it has become part of the private ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Controversial Benefits Of Maternity And Paternity Leave Maternity and Paternity leave are controversial benefits that only some working men and women across the world receive. The length or payment of maternity and paternity leave depends on the country or even the company the employee works in. Most working people are completely for maternity and paternity leave, because it allows for families to adapt to and care for the new baby in their home. In general, people against maternityand paternityleave claim it is bad for businesses and the economy in general. Maternity and paternity leave are times when employees leave work to deliver or care for a newly born child. Murphy makes a case stating these leaves simply hurt women. Murphy s main points are that maternity leave is bad for business, because it is too expensive for them, and bad for women, because companies will not want to hire or promote women if they have to go without them for months and pay them for that time away. The K and K article claims essentially the same things about maternity leave, but both are misleading. First, maternity leave is not bad for businesses, because, as shown in the study by Arnarson et al., parental leaves actually promote work productivity and leads to more women joining the workforce overall. Secondly, it is against the law, in the United States and many other countries, for companies to not hire somebody, because they are a woman or because they are pregnant. Therefore, that argument is completely insignificant anyway. Most arguments against parental leave are not applicable or are incorrect, as shown by all of the studies mentioned ... • 48. The Current Economic Environment Of Lean Manufacturing The current economic environment we are in, shared with increasing guidelines has placed manufacturers in the challenging position of having to reduce waste, improve processes, and increase productivity. Although lean manufacturing can well enough be the answer, some companies have found lean manufacturing implementation to be an ongoing battle. Which is not to say, however, that there have not been some major success stories. There are many obstacles to lean implementations. Two Major Obstacles for Lean Manufacturing Implementation One obstacle is the perception that the use of lean manufacturing solutions is, at best, nothing more than a trend. In addition, at worst, a brief craze. It is often observed as nothing more than a repackaging of fundamental industrial engineering principles dressed up in new clothes, and flaunted in new terms to appeal to a new industry. Lean manufacturing is sometimes seen in many industries as a collection of techniques, known to be effective in the auto industry, which some people are now trying to impose on a completely different industry. This means that perceptions have to be changed. Another major obstacle is gaining management and employee buy in. For example, decreasing batch size is easy to see and not hard to influence in most industries. However, in many industries, altering batch size also involves reducing the size of the blend, which, in turn, runs into renewed testing, and several layers of approval. There will, of ... Poverty can have very damaging effects upon the health and overall wellbeing of children. Growing up within poverty can mean being cold, hungry and not being able to join in with social activities with their friends. A study by the Child Poverty Action Group, (CPAG), found that 3.5 million children are living in poverty in the UK and that children from low income families are more likely to die at birth, suffer chronic illness during childhood or have a disability. They also found that children living in poverty are almost twice as likely to live in bad, unsuitable housing which has a significant impact upon their physical and mental wellbeing as well as impacting upon their educational progress. (CPAG 2013) When looking at child protection within the wider field of safeguarding, cultural practices need to be taken in to account. • 50. The Role Of Catherine Martin In The Great Gatsby As for costuming in The Great Gatsby, Catherine Martin was challenged with outfitting a huge cast. When Baz Luhrmann first decided to adapt F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsbyfor the screen nine years ago, no one was less enthusiastic about the venture than the filmmaker s wife and longtime production and costume designer, Catherine Martin. As an Australian teenager, I really did not connect with the book, Martin admitted to us. I said to Baz, Why would you want to do that novel?! It s so boring! Baz Luhrmann convinced her to re read the book and then Martin became the books biggest fan. There was one line in particular that inspired her visually. • 51. Star Wars Attack Of The Clones Essay If ever a film was regrettably viewed, it would be Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Regularly regarded as the worst in the series, Clones holds the title for most wooden acting, bad writing, unwanted CGI, and awkward moments ever seen in big budget sci fi. Even the action, as extensive it was, had a lack of thrill, simply because the human variant relied too heavily on their CGI partner. However, the filmis canon. We witness Anakin carve himself a path that will lead to his inevitable end in the Dark Side; a forbidden romance of Jedi and Senator. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Either due to the acting or the writing, Anakin Skywalker wasn t done well. First, old Ben Kenobi said to a young Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope, He was a good friend , yet, in Attack of the Clones Anakin continuously flips between rejecting Obi Wan and relying on the man as a father figure, saying, It s all Obi Wan s fault. He s jealous. He s holding me back , leaving a rather frustrated and strained relationship in their wake (Anakin). The boy has a misguided view on his own importance, believing that his status alone as the Chosen One should be enough for him to be placed high in the ranks in the Jedi Order. Thus, this gives Anakin the reasoning that he is above the Jedi s rules. His romance with Senator Padme Amidala, questionable at best, stems from the resentment he holds for his fellow Jedi. Where are the parallels between Anakin and Vader? In the Original trilogy, Obi Wan showed admiration towards the Jedi that was Anakin Skywalker, but this is not the cunning warrior that Old Ben described to Luke.
