5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

difficult job in itself. To make things easier companies these days have started using the psychometric
tests and they then prepare the final results of the hired candidates.
Here are some of the key points that depict how to use psychometric tests for recruiting candidates:
• Know the Right Laws: When the process of recruitment starts, it is essential for the HR department
of the organization to ensure the laws pertaining to psychometric tests and see if they are rightly
followed. It is important for the organization to respect the privacy of the candidate and they should not
diagnose the respective candidate in any possible manner.
• Understand Your Business Needs: The assessment that is made using these tests is should be well
evaluated for the purpose of the candidates’ job performance. The company must have the quantitative
measures for assessing the candidate’s performance of the job. Not having the right measures will keep
you from selecting the right individuals for your organization.
• Finding the Best People for the Job: Psychometric Tests are conducted to find the best of the
crowd. The tool has become beneficial over the years and big and small companies are using it for
carrying out the recruitment process as well as for the promotion of their employees.
• Reduce the Risk of Copying/Cheating: In order to make sure that the candidates do not encourage
