What is ROWE™? 
“A Results-Only Work Environment™ is an 
organization where everyone can do whatever they 
want, whenever they want, as long as the work gets 
done.”
But We’re Already Flexible!
What is ROWE™? 
Guideposts: 
1. People at all levels stop doing any activity that is a 
waste of their time, the customer’s time, or the 
company’s money. 
2. Employees have the freedom to work any way 
they want. 
3. Every day feels like Saturday.
What is ROWE™? 
Guideposts: 
4. Work isn’t a place you go, it’s something you do. 
5. People have an unlimited amount of paid time off as 
long as the work gets done. 
6. Leaving the workplace at 2pm is not considered 
leaving early; arriving at the workplace at 2pm is 
not considered coming in late. 
7. Nobody talks about how many hours they work.
What is ROWE™?

8. Every meeting is optional. 
9. It’s okay to catch a movie on a Tuesday afternoon; 
it’s okay to grocery shop on a Wednesday morning; 
it’s okay to take a nap on a Thursday afternoon. 
10.There are no work schedules.

11.Nobody feels overworked, guilty, or stressed out. 
12.There aren’t any last-minute fire drills. 
13.There’s no judgment about how you spend your time.

(These can all be components of a ROWE, but they all follow the rules of the old system)

I can work from home a couple of days a week... we 
have telecommuting! 
I work wherever I want... the work is getting done. 
I can work from home as long as I let my boss know. I work wherever I want... the work is getting done. 
I can leave early on occasion for doctor 
appointments... we're flexible! 
I work whenever I want... the work is getting done. 
It's fine if I don't show up right at 9am... we're 
flexible!

We have PTO and my boss is pretty flexible about it. 
I plan my vacations by collaborating with my team 
so nothing falls throught the cracks. 
My boss is cool with me making up my hours if I 
need to adjust my schedule around personal stuff.

The office is where we work but I can sometimes 
work from home when I need to.

  • 6. What is ROWE™? “A Results-Only Work Environment™ is an organization where everyone can do whatever they want, whenever they want, as long as the work gets done.”
  • 8. What is ROWE™? Guideposts: 1. People at all levels stop doing any activity that is a waste of their time, the customer’s time, or the company’s money. 2. Employees have the freedom to work any way they want. 3. Every day feels like Saturday.
  • 9. What is ROWE™? Guideposts: 4. Work isn’t a place you go, it’s something you do. 5. People have an unlimited amount of paid time off as long as the work gets done. 6. Leaving the workplace at 2pm is not considered leaving early; arriving at the workplace at 2pm is not considered coming in late. 7. Nobody talks about how many hours they work.
  • 10. What is ROWE™? Guideposts: 8. Every meeting is optional. 9. It’s okay to catch a movie on a Tuesday afternoon; it’s okay to grocery shop on a Wednesday morning; it’s okay to take a nap on a Thursday afternoon. 10.There are no work schedules.
  • 11. What is ROWE™? Guideposts: 11.Nobody feels overworked, guilty, or stressed out. 12.There aren’t any last-minute fire drills. 13.There’s no judgment about how you spend your time.
  • 12. What ROWE™ is Not ROWE is Not: • Flex time • Telecommuting • Flexible schedules (These can all be components of a ROWE, but they all follow the rules of the old system)
  • 13. ROWE vs. The Other Stuff Other Stuff ROWE™ I can work from home a couple of days a week... we have telecommuting! I work wherever I want... the work is getting done. I can work from home as long as I let my boss know. I work wherever I want... the work is getting done. I can leave early on occasion for doctor appointments... we're flexible! I work whenever I want... the work is getting done. It's fine if I don't show up right at 9am... we're flexible! I work whenever I want... the work is getting done. We have PTO and my boss is pretty flexible about it. I plan my vacations by collaborating with my team so nothing falls throught the cracks. My boss is cool with me making up my hours if I need to adjust my schedule around personal stuff. I work whenever I want... the work is getting done. The office is where we work but I can sometimes work from home when I need to. I work wherever I want and use the office as a tool.
