• Evening reading via Zite/Flipboard: 10:30-10:40
• Downtime consumption: 5-10 minutes per day
• Total: 29-36 minutes per day

How to Stay On Top of Social Media in 30 Minutes a Day

  3. 3) And, the onslaught of potential social media and digital tools to use with your clients just continues to explode

  5. Different ways to view your Feedly—Title only layout
  6. Magazine layout (my favorite)
  7. Index layout—pay atttention to number of shares to see which articles are “trending” (easier way to scan quickly)
  8. Pinterest-like layout
  9. Full article layout
  10. Individual stories then look like this when you click on them in Feedly; multiple bookmarking (Evernote, Instapaper, Pocket) and sharing (G+, Twitter, FB, LinkedIn) options at top.
  11. Preferences allow you to set your Feedly just the way you want it;
  12. Home page—highlight diff areas -Customize your tweets from Feedly
  13. Tags: use to categorize Search: another easy way to find content once you’ve bookmarked it Titles: Easy way to scan (I do this every week with Talking Points)
  14. Use the Diigo bookmarklet—allows you to bookmark on the fly with just a couple clicks (click on bookmarklet, share this page and away you go!)
  15. Here’s what pops up when you click on “Save”—insert tags

  17. Background noise: Have on all day Check at 8 am, noon and 4 pm
  18. Solo PR list Look to engage with this list 3-4 times per day Will add to list based on interactions on Solo PR FB group and this event
  19. MN Media list Look to engage this list 1-2 times per day Keep relationships with local media going this way; great way to keep up on news for other local clients, too
  20. Social Media thought leader list Merely scanning here and looking to bookmark posts—limited engagement Looking for people who publish (Baer, Bullas, Schaefer), but also those who are plugged in (Monty, Handley)
  21. Be sure to check the signals—listens and likes can tell you which stories others are reading Nice sharing options right in the app Notice the 2X button in lower right—you can ask the Umano voice to read FASTER! Subscribe to different categories: Digital Trends, Tech, etc.
  22. Pinterest-like layout—easy to read Curates from all sorts of sites—from The Atlantic to The Verge to the Washington Post Great way to see what EVERYONE is talking about—not just the digerati

  24. I could waste ALL sorts of time on FB each day—in fact, some days I’m not tough enough. I give in. I could talk with my friend Jeff Esposito about Andre the Giant

  27. But, you need to be hyper-vigilant about the time you spend on FB. And, the time you DO spend on FB should be spend contributing or learning from a business perspective—NOT liking cat photos. Participating in the #SoloPR FB Group for example—a GOOD way to spend time.

  29. Scan for posts/articles you can use in your professional lives—easy to spot with links.
  30. Reading countless hours of Buzzfeed listicles? NOT PRODUCTIVE! STOP IMMEDIATELY
  31. Consider making Paper the primary way you consumer Facebook—at least the feed. More productive with looks at curated news.

And I always seem to find an article worth bookmarking in its Watercooler section. And in the Career Status Updates section, you can find the latest comings/goings in the media.
  38. Love SocialMedia.org’s email for case studies from the biggest companies in the US—tons of good examples and ideas here.
  39. PSFK isn’t necessarily social focused, but it’s keyed in to the latest trends across the creative business. Scott’s enewsletter is a treasure trove of stats, tools and case studies each week.
  40. Social Media Examiner—great Friday content aggregator about what happened in social this week (macro-level trends)
