The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
In his novel The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer presents the corruption of the Catholic Church
through several of his characters. Chaucer lived in a time of controversial indulgences, a way to pay
off sins. Chaucer s tales show his opposition to these sinful behaviors that he believed were common
among the clergy. In order to protest against sinful behavior and religious corruption, Chaucer uses
characters such as the pardoner, the friar, the summoner, and the prioress to show the lack of morality
and faith among the clergy, and presents the parson as an example of how to correct corruption of the
Catholic Church. Chaucer demonstrates corruption of the clergy through the pardoner who is a sinner
since he deceives the innocent through greed, which at the time was a mortal sin. Chaucer describes
the pardoner as having a bunch of relics in his pouch such as a croys of latoun, full of stones (GP 699).
However, Chaucer retorts, But with thise relikes, whan that he fond A povre person dwellynge upon
lond, Upon a day he gat hym moore moneye
Than that the person gat in monthes tweye (GP 701 704).
Here, Chaucer calls the pardoner a liar who uses false relics to collect money from people he meets
who are trying to repent of their sins. The pardoner is even more appalling because he preaches
against greed, yet he is guilty of that very sin when he tricks the innocent into giving him large
amounts of money by using these false relics. Chaucer characterizes the pardoner as

The Social And Its Effect On Society
The social is unstable, it s able to be a wide variety of different groups or eras. Desires from the social
are changing everyday. Society and culture today is influencing the types of music that is considered
popular today. In many ways the race and class has become normative, and has a place in popular
culture, with that said the social is vaguely changing, and is dependent on the factors argued. I will
argue we can see the social in the music through the pleasure received from music, through cultural
values, and desire, and symbolic control.
The social can be seen in music through repetition, repetition generates a sense of pleasure to people.
Society appreciates familiarity we enjoy catchy predictable songs, and that familiarity could be
achieved through repetition. There are two types of repetitions in music, such as musematic riffs, and
discursive riffs. Musematic riffs is more basic than discursive, and is the repetition of shorter units
throughout the song. Discursive repetition is the repetition of longer units, at the level of phase, and is
based towards the self, and ego. According to middleton repetition helps the listener get into a
different space, changing the mood and gain some symbolic control. Repetition is often associated
with the phenomenon of being sent , particularly in relation to hypnotic rhythmic repetitions and
audience trance: a collective! loss of the self.(Middleton pg 19) For example the condition of
production influenced culturally

What Is The Theme Of The Lion King Movie
When it comes to movies, I can be a hard person to please. I like dramas, comedies, and romantic
movies. There s one movie that I love so much, I watched this movie countless times when I was
younger and still watch it today, and can recite the entire script for memory. It includes all these
different themes and more. The Lion King, a 1994 G rated Disney American animated music film.
This movie demonstrates family, friends, betrayal, rejection, running from responsibility, values, and
growing strong through adversity.
The movie starts with a sunrise of African grasslands. As dawn breaks, all the animals of the Pride
Lands are gathering to go to Pride Rock, the home of the pride of lions. Mufasa (James Earl Jones) is
waiting on Pride Rock. Zazu (Rowan Atkinson) flies over all the animals and meets Mufasa on Pride
Rock where he bows to him. Rafiki (Robert Guillaume) the mandrill passes between ranks of animals,
who bows to him; he then climbs Pride Rock to where Mufasa is standing. Rafiki and Mufasa then
embrace each other with a hug. Mufasa then takes Rafiki ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Simba s first family relationship was the relationship he built was with his mother, Sarabi. She gave
him all the nurturing he needed as a cub. His father Mufasa taught him lessons about the Circle Of
Life. One example, Mufasa tries a functional approach with Simba. This approach considers the
functions and responsibilities of leaders. Hoping that Simba could learn and develop these skills over

effective leader, such as confidence, courage, passion, concentration, and values, these are all traits
Simba would need to be a great leader. In the end, Simba returns to the Pride Lands, facing up to his

Why Is Lincoln s Assassination Justified
On April 14th, 1865, John Wilkes Booth kidnaped and assassinated Abraham Lincoln. It was a
mournful day for individuals of the U.S . Meanwhile, Booth wanted to protect the South against the
Union. He had co conspirators by his side who attempted to kidnap the president several times but
ended in failure. Many think Booth should have done something different to change Lincoln s idea of
abolishing slavery. Although John Wilkes Booth did something wrong for the right reason, it will
never be justified because there is always a different alternative.
Being motivated to do harsh actions leads to jealousy, which develops a person to do anything for
their own satisfaction. Considering the fact, Booth compares himself to Brutus which was the Roman
statesman who murdered Julius Caesar. Brutus and his fellow Roman senators feared Caesar wanted to
become the dictator of the republic. In the article, Last Diary Entry of John Wilkes Booth , Booth
states, I am here in despair. And why? For doing what Brutus was honored for. What made Tell a
hero? And yet I, for striving down a greater tyrant... (1). This means ... Show more content on

Booth s assassination toward Lincoln did not make a difference after all since the African Americans
received their freedom. In the other hand, after Caesar s death, Rome comes into a cycle of civil wars
which leads to an empire. The citizens of Rome are unhappy about the upcoming wars, they thought
the killing of Caesar will make their problems go away but instead it leads to more chaotic situations.
In the article, The Telegraph , it states, With Caesar gone, Rome spiraled into another cycle of civil
wars, which resulted in one of the most significant constitutional transformations in history (19). This
means, the citizens of Rome regret not having Caesar as their leader. They would rather have Caesar

Emotional Neglect And Abuse From My Past
By the time I am 21 I will be able to move past my emotional neglect and abuse from my past. I never
dealt with earlier in my childhood by finding a technique that can help me deal with my past trauma,
so now I am serving my consequence in my early adult life. Lately I ve been feeling angry and can t
find the reason why some people say it is because I never dealt with my past and now it is catching up
to me. My goal is to find techniques and heal myself by the time I reach 21 because at 21 I will no
longer be in state s care and get the assistance I need to move forward with my life. I will be covering
my personal experience with this from the beginning as a young child to where I am at now in the life
and other things I see myself struggling with on a day to day basis. The purpose of me writing about I
tired of feeling the way I do and I need to find a way to handle it.
Because their emotions were not validated as children, they may have difficulty knowing and trusting
their own emotions as adults. Jonice Webb said this October 12, 2012. Trust plays a big role in anyone
s life so if a child can t trust their own feelings and emotions as a child how would you expect them to
trust and understand their feelings and emotions as adults when they have experienced neglect and
abuse that and not love and care.
It s time to get some reparenting to compensate for the parenting you never had. As an adult you can
take charge of your life and make your future better than your past.

Cultural Religions In Ancient China
In ancient china there were two main cultural religions. These were Taoism and Buddhism. Taoism is
China s oldest religion. At one time, the land called China was the home of numerous peoples with
different racial origins. All these ethnic groups probably had their own special gods and religious
beliefs. Over time, kingdoms and empires grew in various areas and started incorporating more and
more people into them. One common theme in these kingdoms and empires was a belief in life after
death as can be seen in ancient tombs all over China. So people had to pay homage to and care for the
dead. Some Chinese have fear of the dead, and they try to obey the dead or appease them. Another
idea that is very strong in Chinese philosophy is as Chinese

Why Women Still CanT Have It All By Anne-Marie Slaughter

very successful women who had worked for Hillary Clinton at the state department being the first
woman policy planner. She begins the essay by explaining a conversation that came up between
herself and a colleague who held a senior position in the White House. She tells her colleague that is
has been very difficult for her to be away from her son at work, when he needs her at home. At this
point Slaughter comes up with the idea to write an article about these struggles she and many women
are dealing with. Throughout this meeting Slaughter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This reason could eventually lead to women either being stressed because they don t have enough time
to fulfill their needs at work and home, and also could eventually lead to a decision against having
children altogether. Slaughter also includes examples of some very successful women that have
struggled to raise a family due to the fact that they are so limited with time, while most successful
men, if not all, are still able to balance the time of have a family and a high end job. It s easy to
understand how this can be a very difficult problem for most women to get around. Even if they find a
very successful job, it s much more challenging for them to be a good mom while also doing their
overall best in their profession. I thought Slaughter shared a very interesting quote halfway through
her article to help sum up her thoughts from Mary Matalin, (a lady who resigned after only two years
in order to spend more time with her children.) Matalin says, having control of your schedule is the
only way that women who want a career and a family can make it work. Quote from The Atlantic. In
the article Why Men Still Can t Have It All, by Richard Dorment, a senior writer and editor in esquire
magazine, Dorment responds to Slaughter s article by claiming men face the same problem as women
do. He claims that recent times have made it much more difficult for men to balance work and family
life. He

Democracy Vs Representative Democracy
Abraham Lincoln (2005) defined modern democracy in three part as government of the people ,
government by the people and government for the people . Democracy started in Greek around 500
B.C. with the simple meaning of people with power, nowadays democracy could be separate into two
forms the direct democracy and the representative democracy. In this essay, I will argue that
democracy is in crisis from the following aspect, fail of the direct democracy, the decline of
representative democracy and the eroded right.
Firstly, democracy is in crisis due to fail examples of direct democracy. Referendum a primary for of a
direct democracy when people are directly consulted for government decision making and give the
decision through a vote. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other than representative democracy, liberal democracy has an additional liberal feature, the freedom.
In the Belmarsh case in 2001 ,for example, the freedom has been eroded. In this case, nine men have
been put in jail without trial due to UK parliament respond to the 9/11 attack in the USA. After the
judicial review, the Crime and Security Act has been changed from the government have the power to
detain anyone who was suspected without trial into the suspected terrorist can only be held without
trial up to 28 days. Human right has been eroded and people s freedom are therefore not secure
anymore (Ginsburg, 2005). Freedom of religion, another feature of liberal democracy becomes
controversial under Huntington s view of the clash of civilizations. According to Huntington s point of
view that the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or
primarily economic, the great division among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will
be cultural (1996), therefore, the freedom of religion would have a possibility leads to conflict. As this
brings the question to choices between either freedom or conflict, some country chooses to abandon
freedom of religion. For example, in China government forbids the beliefs to Fa Lun Gong as it partly
clashes with the communist ideology. From the side of liberal democracy, democracy is decreasing
because of the fact that freedom is been

The question is does Oedipus have a tragic flaw? The answer is yes. His tragic flaw is pride and anger

Essay Against Lowering The Drinking Age
Once a person turns eighteen, he or she receives many rights and privileges. One major right that all of
these teenagers are missing is the right to buy and consume alcohol. The question is posed is whether
lowering the minimum drinking age to eighteen would be a better or worse idea. Jeffery A. Miron, a
senior lecturer at Harvard University s economics department, and Elina Tetelbaum, a law student
from Yale University, write in their argumentative article in Forbes Magazine, The Dangers of the
Drinking Age , in which they believe that the minimum drinking age of twenty one is not working.
After conducting studies, they found that the minimum legal drinking age of twenty one has little or
no effect on traffic fatalities. Lowering the minimum drinking age to eighteen would likely have the
same effects as the minimum age of twenty one; it is reasonable to assume that underage teenagers
may feel less rebellious knowing that they can legally buy and consume alcohol at the age of eighteen.
Amethyst Initiative was a petition that called for a public debate about the effects of a minimum
drinking age of twenty one that was signed by over one hundred presidents of colleges and
universities. The response to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

is already avoided and not supported by a majority of the people. All of these results uphold that the

has. Miron and Tetelbaum display their bias on this subject by stating that rather than producing
benefits, the minimum legal drinking age supports irresponsible side effects such as binge drinking
and disrespect for the

Women Of The United States
One must reach far back in history in order to appreciate what two women are currently undertaking in
the political arena in the United States. Presently, two women are vying for their respective political
party s nomination to become President of the United States, however in the late nineteenth century
this would have never been thought possible. Women during this era had no self representation other
than their husbands and fathers. Several generations of women who supported the suffrage movement,
fought to change the Constitution of the United States. These revolutionary women of the United
States played a monumental role in making this a reality. As a result of these women s efforts, and
many more that followed, the 19th amendment to the Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920,
allowing women the right to vote. This amendment marks one of the most pivotal points in American
politics. In order to set the stage for the importance of women s rights during this time in history, one
must first understand the circumstances under which women lived in nineteenth century America. In
the book, Lucy Stone, Speaking Out for Equality, author Andrea Moore Kerr tells of the day Lucy
Stone was born in Massachusetts, the year was 1818. It is now known that Lucy Stone would become
a champion for the rights of women and especially women s suffrage. Hannah Stone, Lucy s mother

Tuesdays In The Tower Book Report
Many young children dream of living in a castle. A castle is a key part of many fairy tales, whether
they have a princess locked up in a tower, a terrible dragon inside which must be defeated, or the
castle is the home where a royal family resides. In Wednesdays in the Tower, by Jessica Day George,
the royal family indeed lives in a castle. They do not live in just any castle; their castle is for lack of a
better word; alive. The book, Wednesdays in the Tower, is another book that fits into several genres. It
is traditional literature. The story incorporates folkloric elements; it is a story meant to entertain. It
shares in the folktale criteria of being a beast tale, a main character in this book is Rufus; a griffin
which Celie, one of the princesses in the story hatched from an egg the castle gave her. Rufus has most
of his animal characteristics but he is decidedly opinionated much like a human would be. The story
also includes magic and wonder, because there is nothing normal about a castle, which when bored ...

What Makes A Superheros
Superheros are Lit/Superheros Characteristics When I was 10 years old I really got into superheros
when I saw Batman begins for the first time I loved the fact that Batman went through so much
training to become a hero to find who killed his parents and Batman was a billionaire who wanted to
help his city come back to the way it was before his parents died. The best superheroes have certain
traits that make them unique from other superheroes for example superheroes have some sort of power
or have a great story line also they have double lives keeping two identities. Some superheroes have
superpowers and some do not, but some of the best superheroes have powers such as the Flash,
Superman and Deadpool. Flash is a superhero who has the ability to run as fast as the speed of light
this makes him a great superhero because he has to learn to live with his powers and keep his powers
out of his real life and not let anyone know he s the Flash. Deadpool has the ability to regrow body
parts this makes him a great hero because he does not care for his powers he wants to get rid of them,
but he acts like a villain, but is a hero so he adds comedy to his character which allows people to

Explain Why Coffee Is Not Fruity Hoops
Picture this, you wake up in the morning, you go to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee and eat a bowl
of cereal. The coffee is not Folders, but instead it is Best Way Coffee a store brand type. The cereal is
not Fruit Loops, but Best Way Fruity Hoops. What you just had for breakfast was some inferior goods.
This does not mean that they are less quality or bad tasting, they are just a goods that are considered a

Pretivation Of Child Observation On Child And Children
I observed a male with a female child (approximately 2 years of age) walking around the store to buy
some hot food to eat. The adult carries a basket in one hand and the other hand holds the child s hand.
The child wants to hold the basket which it is full of fresh vegetables and frying sausages and sticky
rice. The adult bends down and says, You can t carry the basket because it s very heavy and you are
still small to carry it. You may hurt yourself. Okay? The child looks a little sad and replies, Okay. The
adult then continues as they both walking away, the adult says, You can carry it when you get older
like Daddy, ok? The child replied with okay!
The method observed was the Cognitive Method (Reasoning)
The evidence supports that this socialization method as cognitive method (reasoning) was that the
male explained to the child that the child was still small and she shouldn t be carry a heavy basket
because she may hurt herself.
What you observed
I observed a small group of 4 people, 1 male and 1 female adults and 2 female child (approximately 1
½ and 3 years of age) blowing bubbles at the park. The male shows both child to blow bubbles out of
a bubble stick. The adult male would try to blow the bubbles first and then gives the two girls a chance
to blow the bubbles. The older child tries to blow air into the whole of the bubble stick but nothing

Colonial American Hardships
Colonial Americans faced many hardships as they came to the new land and established the new
country. These hardships were explained and told in the writings of John smith, Phillis Wheatley, and
Anne Bradstreet. As these writers were primary sources, meaning they experienced the suffering and
privation first hand, you can have a better understanding of what it was like for them, or the people
during that era. These colonists had suffered a great amount. Either these colonists did not know how
to hunt for game, they did not know how to farm correctly, they were slaves, or had troubles with
many other things. Which had led to many of these colonists having to suffer in many different ways,
such as from the lack of proper nutrition, being diseased, or from the vicious beatings of their owners.
Many colonist s lost their lives, starved, and did not know how to live when they found or were
coming to the new land. There were many different types of hardships that the people of that era
endured. Each writer had their own rough experience they spoke about in their writings.
One of the writers who wrote about the hardships they had experienced was John Smith. Captain John
Smith was a soldier and the governor of Jamestown. In Smith s writings, he speaks mostly about the
colonization coming to the new land. He and his men believed they were going to build a successful
colony. But due to disease, famine, and the occasional attacks from the neighboring Powhatan Indians,

Career Goals Course Analysis
I have set several goals for myself using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and
Timely) goal form to make them as obtainable as possible. Although I have written these goals in such
a way, there are still a couple obstacles I anticipate running into while trying to reach any one of my
goals, specifically, the ones I anticipate encountering for my second year career goals. My second year
career goals include trying to get an internship abroad and being a volunteer somewhere that focuses
on sustainability. The first obstacle I believe I will encounter is making time to make sure I make the
goal remotely possible and not procrastinating, if I do not make the time, there is no way I can achieve
the goal. The next obstacle I will likely encounter is making mistakes. I know I will make mistakes in

The Role Of Advertising In The 1950 s
The 1950s could be known as the promoter s fantasy decade. World War II was over. The after war

publicists were anxious to offer products. In this essay our group will be discussing advertising in

T.V., Radio, Magazines and Packaging as well as providing examples to support our information.

The post war suburbanization, growth in families and income, the birth of national TV advertising,
consolidation of consumer product companies, and the explosion of national retailers, all led to a
single new development, the creation of brands to support these changes in consumer lifestyle (Shear,
2009). Package design or brand creation was greatly influenced by this drastic change in consumer
lifestyle (Shear, 2009). Designers started using enticing slogans such as quick n easy or heat n serve
along with their products such as pump action bottles, ready made packs etc. all to catch the eye of
their would be buyer (Young Young, 2004; pp.39 41). The actual product wasn t that much different
when it came to face value, that is why the packaging that held it would have to be recognisable and
communicate to the consumer that the product they are about to buy is better than any competitor out
there (Young Young, 2004; pp.39 41). Along with all the innovative packaging that was being
promoted the idea of self service was also slowly being introduced into the consumer life style (Young
Young, 2004; pp.39 41). Packaging undertook three evolutionary stages i.e. The Retailer, where
packaging was nothing more than a protective layer for the product and the transaction; The
Manufacturer, where packaging was used to promote

Forms Or Universals
As human beings we are confronted every day with a physical and real world, most of us would not
question the legitimacy or the existence of the things that we encounter on a daily basis. but, what is
reality? where does it take place? Is reality independent or dependent on our thinking and perceptions?
Philosophers have struggled to answer these questions, Plato s most influential theory is specifically
an attempt to establish the place in which reality transpires. This theory is known as the theory of
Forms or Universals. Plato believes that the physical world where humans dwell is not a real world,
for Plato true reality exists beyond our objective world. In the Republic, Plato talks about the physical
and the spiritual realm. The physical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
as a matter of facts, the changes that are perceived in the physical world do not change the essence of
being (reality) but changes within being. He is also a dualist, he believes there are two worlds but you
cannot separate the reality, in other words, there is only one world. In his dialogue with Parmenides
Plato presents the idea that universals are unique while at the same time sharing some sort of the
distinctiveness of what Parmenides understands as being. But universals are in many places at once
and in many shapes but without losing its Form. He does the same process as he presents the idea of
being different. Plato meets Parmenides own grounds, by showing that not because you are not
something it means that you lose your status of being, but in reality, you are just different.(164 172)
In the case of Heraclitus, he argued that what is real is in total flux. He believes that we cannot have
the absolute truth or knowledge that Plato is presenting through the theory of Forms but rather
believes that everything is in universal flux. So, if things are changing how is it possible to know
something based on appearances. In his own words, you cannot step in the same river twice. The water
you step in the first time is not there anymore, so you cannot bring the past back, change is the way of
truth. In simple words, truth is in a constant state of being and not being.

Andy Warhol Pop Artists
During the mid 1950 s, an art movement called Pop art began in Britain and then spread to the United
States by the late 1950 s. Pop art is created to display emotions instead of to show the actual piece of
art. This mass cultural art movement emerged in Britain, the United States, Spain, Japan, Italy,
Belgium, Netherlands, and Russia. This movement allowed artists to break the old traditions of
abstract expressionism and create new and different ideals of art with no limit. Pop art was often used
in advertising for magazines and newspapers. Two of Pop art s major artists were Andy Warhol and
Roy Lichtenstein who created art in similar but also different ways.
Andy Warhol was an American Pop artist. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 6,
1928. He died on February 22, 1987, in New York, New York. His parents were Czechoslovakian
immigrants named Ulja and Ondrej Warhola. He was a very smart child, but he suffered from a
nervous disorder. This caused him to often stay home which lead him to collect pictures and listen to
the radio about current events. All of this created his love for pop culture and modern celebrities.
When he was sixteen years old, he graduated from high school and went to Carnegie Institute of
Technology. When he graduated in 1949, he went to live in New York City and became a commercial
illustrator. Then Andy Warhol began working for popular magazines like Vogue, Glamour, and the

Understanding Memes In Human Genes
Understanding Memes
Genes are the genetic code that allows us to pass down and spread our traits and DNA to our
descendants. It is constantly changing as we adapt and multiply our species, inheriting and letting go
of certain traits to implement into the next person. Much like these genes, memes are also the sort of
code that humans use to link our ideas to each other. A meme can be an idea, an image, a sound, a
phrase, or any combination of these. Their means of transportation along our web of knowledge is (or
forms of) language. Before modern language, it was hard to demonstrate abstract ideas and pass them
down to the next generation, but now, it is commonplace.
Where did the term meme originate from?

Now while this may be true of the meme modified specifically for that purpose, its origins were not
fueled by any sort of hate or racism. This is a prime example of how the mutation of memes can be
suited and selected for purposes, much like how animals inherit certain genes to help them adapt to a
specific environment. People with common interests or opinions can take a common idea, and adapt or
twist it to make it suit their purposes, making the idea itself take on a biased view among others
unaware of the original intent of said idea. While not common amongst political and corporate
organizations, the modification and adaptation of memes has been a way to express personal thoughts
in a way others can relate for quite some time within certain internet communities. Memes don t
typically come about for specialized purposes, but they can inherit traits to end up doing exactly

The Matchmaker Analysis
The golden age of the big budget musical may remain lost to the annals of old Hollywood, some may
argue that classics will always be better than their reimagined counterparts, but this is hardly the case
in all circumstances. The 1969 big screen adaptation of Hello, Dolly! proves that sometimes the
original star power of a cast can be overridden decades later. The 2017 Broadway revival of Hello
Dolly! supports the idea that while people may become accustomed to hearing a song a certain way, a
new interpretation of the materials can lead to blockbuster success. Despite the glitter and grandeur of
the on screen film adaptation s costuming and set design, the 2017 iteration of the musical, based on
Thornton Wilder s play The Matchmaker, shows that big budgets and sweeping landscapes are not
needed; opting to go with garishly bright pastels and impeccable choreography to stir the imaginations
and win the hearts of millions of theatergoers.
Starring Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau, the 1969 film certainly attempted to bring the star
power but hostility that developed between Walter Matthau and Barbra Streisand (TCM) turned into
anything but a love story when presented on the big screen. Both actors shared a mutual dislike that
caused a very clear disconnect onset, where Matthau refused to be in the same room as Streisand
unless they were filming (TCM). In front of the camera, Mathau comes across as a crass old
businessman who cares for no one but himself, while

Summary Of The Exegesis Of Rappaccini s Daughter
Though the two previously analyzed parabolic short stories assist in showing Hawthorne s writing
style and goals, the exegesis of his most convoluted and allegorical story, Rappaccini s Daughter, truly
accomplishes this exposition of Hawthorne s work. In Padua, Italy, Giovanni Guasconti rents a room
with a view of Dr. Rappaccini s garden. He meets professor Dr. Pietro Baglioni, who tells Giovanni
that be must be cautious of Rappaccini since he is heartless and cares only about his scientific work.
Giovanni notices Rappaccini s beautiful daughter, Beatrice, as falls in love. They meet with each other
several times and Giovanni realizes he has become poisonous, as plants are dying in his hands.
Baglioni reveals that Beatrice has grown up constantly exposed to poison and is poisonous herself, so
he gives Giovanni a vial of medicine to give to Beatrice as a cure, but when she takes it she promptly
dies. Literary critic Roy R. Male introduces the involved nature of the story and expresses, This
complexity manifests itself first in the objects of the garden, the Eden of the present world (Male). Just
like The Birthmark, Rappaccini s Daughter tells of death caused by human pride, but this is trivial.
The allegorical nature of this story lies in its biblical connection. Rappaccini s garden symbolizes the
garden of Eden and the story and its characters directly follow that of the creation of man, the creation
of sin and the breakage of worldly perfection. Giovanni represents Adam, Beatrice is Eve, Rappaccini
plays God and Baglioni acts as Satan. Giovanni and Beatrice are Adam and Eve since they are two
innocent characters who fall victim to the deception and sinful malicious intent of Baglioni.
Rappaccini is God because his primary role is to create and construct. Since Hawthorne makes an
allegorical link to the Garden of Eden, the story can be perceived in the context of the New Testament.
Assuming the reader comprehends Hawthorne s connection, they are then able to interpret a much
more involved story with greater insight. Rappaccini s Daughter can be interpreted as a parable, but
can also be seen as the more complex allegory that it is. Further, Hawthorne exposes a duality in evil
through his allegory. Male

Media Representation In America
In my artistic work, I decided to pursue and address an issue that stands out to me because of its lack
of media representation in America during an era where media is more obtainable than ever. The
Israeli Palestinian conflict is rarely reported in mainstream media in the United States. Instead, topics
such as celebrity gossip dominate headlines and it s tragic to me; the Kardashians are mentioned more
in the news than West Bank or Gaza combined. The people in Palestine have no voice in America and
yet America is the perpetrator of their injustice. How can we, as Americans, face our own mistakes if
we aren t even aware that we re making them? We boast that all men are created equal when we tell
Palestinians everyday that Israelis deserve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People rely on their news sources as their gateway to the rest of the world and when these gateways
are compromised by the government, the people of those countries lose their ability to fight injustice.
In my illustration, the two individuals are blindfolded to demonstrate the national blindness in present
day America. Our cluelessness of what happens beyond our country is a direct result of our
government s choke hold on the press; America is known as a country of freedom and yet we are often
isolated from the knowledge we deserve to know illustrated by the use of the umbrella above the table.
The pillar connecting the barbed wire fence surrounding Gaza has the American colors because the
United States government has an incriminating role in what has been happening in Palestine, but it is
so far removed beyond the picturesque Hollywood Hills that not many people know about it. Within
the barricaded fence, a bomb is titled the truth , because the truth of the Israeli Palestinian conflict is
that devastation has been tearing Gaza apart. The bomb is colossal in proportion to its own fencing to
exemplify how large that devastation is. I hope that upon my audience seeing my art, they will grow
intrigued and actively seek out the truth about the government s role in the Middle East. Inspirations
for my piece come from a recent flux of political cartoons in response to Trump s election. I was
amazed at how cartoons, which can be so incredibly simple, can convey such intense and important
messages to its audience by the uses of symbolism, irony, and exaggeration. To sum up, this art piece
asks for Americans to dare and pull off the blindfold. It dares people to question what is written in the
media, and whether or not what is written truly matters in the grand scheme of world events.
Knowledge is the first step in the process of justice, and the Palestinians deserve

This valuation of NABR was based on equity and debt resulting in the financial value of the firm, and
connects with the value of the firm s asset. By using the DCF method, the total fair market value of
the business entity is calculated by discounting future projected cash flows back to the date of
valuation. At the end of the projection period, a residual or terminal value is calculated and discounted
to its present value at the date of the valuation. The theory behind the discounted cash flow method is
that an entity s value is equal to its present value of its expected future cash flow. This method is

picture of the firm value. This consists of certain steps which involve developing a method to be used
to project future earnings of cash flow, a risk adjusted discount rate, discounting the projected cash
flow to the date of the valuation, and capitalizing the terminal year s projection into a residual value
using the discount rate less the growth rate. In this case, we estimated the growth rate of 2.3%, and the

Girl On The Escalator Poem
A Bukowski Poem
Nia Scott
The film, Girl on the Escalator is a visual retelling of a poem by well known poet, Charles Bukowski.
Girl on the Escalator was an official selection of the 2016 LA Shorts Festival and the 2016 Raindance
Film Festival. It was directed by Kayhan Lannes Ozmen.
Charles Bukowski. What can be said about him that hasn t already been said? I think he is a very
talented poet but also controversial. He was an alcoholic and in his poems, he would talk about ogling
women in a way that is slightly uncomfortable to read. Yet, he also wrote uplifting, compassionate
poems about the poor and suffering. He wasn t someone that could be easily labeled as a writer, he
jumped around and wrote exactly what he wanted. Bukowski was always honest in his poems, and
many of them read like the pages of a diary or the streams of thought that we can t see. His honesty
polarized him with some audiences because people like it when they can easily label something and
don t need to think on it, but Bukowski couldn t be named one thing. I think it was hard for some to
read his poems about the poor and then accept his other poems like Girl on the Escalator . He was a
very complex person who lived a colorful life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the narrator reads each line, it is acted out on the screen. Bukowski does what he does best in the
beginning and creepily ogles the young woman s backside. He doesn t seem to like the man that is
with her or does not like the girl because she is not with him. Either way he is motivated to create a
backstory for the girl. The couple did not speak to or antagonize him but he felt the need to create a
story for the girl. Sometimes when I m bored I ll do a similar thing where I ll sit down and create
stories in my head of people s lives but they re usually more hopeful. Bukowski breaks this girl down
as someone with alcoholic and racist

  • 2. The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer In his novel The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer presents the corruption of the Catholic Church through several of his characters. Chaucer lived in a time of controversial indulgences, a way to pay off sins. Chaucer s tales show his opposition to these sinful behaviors that he believed were common among the clergy. In order to protest against sinful behavior and religious corruption, Chaucer uses characters such as the pardoner, the friar, the summoner, and the prioress to show the lack of morality and faith among the clergy, and presents the parson as an example of how to correct corruption of the Catholic Church. Chaucer demonstrates corruption of the clergy through the pardoner who is a sinner since he deceives the innocent through greed, which at the time was a mortal sin. Chaucer describes the pardoner as having a bunch of relics in his pouch such as a croys of latoun, full of stones (GP 699). However, Chaucer retorts, But with thise relikes, whan that he fond A povre person dwellynge upon lond, Upon a day he gat hym moore moneye Than that the person gat in monthes tweye (GP 701 704). Here, Chaucer calls the pardoner a liar who uses false relics to collect money from people he meets who are trying to repent of their sins. The pardoner is even more appalling because he preaches against greed, yet he is guilty of that very sin when he tricks the innocent into giving him large amounts of money by using these false relics. Chaucer characterizes the pardoner as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Social And Its Effect On Society The social is unstable, it s able to be a wide variety of different groups or eras. Desires from the social are changing everyday. Society and culture today is influencing the types of music that is considered popular today. In many ways the race and class has become normative, and has a place in popular culture, with that said the social is vaguely changing, and is dependent on the factors argued. I will argue we can see the social in the music through the pleasure received from music, through cultural values, and desire, and symbolic control. The social can be seen in music through repetition, repetition generates a sense of pleasure to people. Society appreciates familiarity we enjoy catchy predictable songs, and that familiarity could be achieved through repetition. There are two types of repetitions in music, such as musematic riffs, and discursive riffs. Musematic riffs is more basic than discursive, and is the repetition of shorter units throughout the song. Meanwhile, Booth wanted to protect the South against the Union. He had co conspirators by his side who attempted to kidnap the president several times but ended in failure. Many think Booth should have done something different to change Lincoln s idea of abolishing slavery. Although John Wilkes Booth did something wrong for the right reason, it will never be justified because there is always a different alternative. Being motivated to do harsh actions leads to jealousy, which develops a person to do anything for their own satisfaction. Considering the fact, Booth compares himself to Brutus which was the Roman statesman who murdered Julius Caesar. Brutus and his fellow Roman senators feared Caesar wanted to become the dictator of the republic. In the article, Last Diary Entry of John Wilkes Booth , Booth states, I am here in despair. And why? One major right that all of these teenagers are missing is the right to buy and consume alcohol. The question is posed is whether lowering the minimum drinking age to eighteen would be a better or worse idea. Jeffery A. Miron, a senior lecturer at Harvard University s economics department, and Elina Tetelbaum, a law student from Yale University, write in their argumentative article in Forbes Magazine, The Dangers of the Drinking Age , in which they believe that the minimum drinking age of twenty one is not working. After conducting studies, they found that the minimum legal drinking age of twenty one has little or no effect on traffic fatalities. Lowering the minimum drinking age to eighteen would likely have the same effects as the minimum age of twenty one; it is reasonable to assume that underage teenagers may feel less rebellious knowing that they can legally buy and consume alcohol at the age of eighteen. Presently, two women are vying for their respective political party s nomination to become President of the United States, however in the late nineteenth century this would have never been thought possible. Women during this era had no self representation other than their husbands and fathers. The post war suburbanization, growth in families and income, the birth of national TV advertising, consolidation of consumer product companies, and the explosion of national retailers, all led to a single new development, the creation of brands to support these changes in consumer lifestyle (Shear, 2009). Package design or brand creation was greatly influenced by this drastic change in consumer lifestyle (Shear, 2009). Designers started using enticing slogans such as quick n easy or heat n serve along with their products such as pump action bottles, ready made packs etc. all to catch the eye of their would be buyer (Young Young, 2004; pp.39 41). The actual product wasn t that much different when it came to face value, that is why the packaging that held it would have to be recognisable and communicate to the consumer that the product they are about to buy is better than any competitor out there (Young Young, 2004; pp.39 41). Along with all the innovative packaging that was being promoted the idea of self service was also slowly being introduced into the consumer life style (Young Young, 2004; pp.39 41). Forms Or Universals As human beings we are confronted every day with a physical and real world, most of us would not question the legitimacy or the existence of the things that we encounter on a daily basis. but, what is reality? where does it take place? Is reality independent or dependent on our thinking and perceptions? Philosophers have struggled to answer these questions, Plato s most influential theory is specifically an attempt to establish the place in which reality transpires. This theory is known as the theory of Forms or Universals. Plato believes that the physical world where humans dwell is not a real world, for Plato true reality exists beyond our objective world. In the Republic, Plato talks about the physical and the spiritual realm. The physical ... He is also a dualist, he believes there are two worlds but you cannot separate the reality, in other words, there is only one world. In his dialogue with Parmenides Plato presents the idea that universals are unique while at the same time sharing some sort of the distinctiveness of what Parmenides understands as being. But universals are in many places at once and in many shapes but without losing its Form. He does the same process as he presents the idea of being different. Plato meets Parmenides own grounds, by showing that not because you are not something it means that you lose your status of being, but in reality, you are just different.(164 172) In the case of Heraclitus, he argued that what is real is in total flux. He believes that we cannot have the absolute truth or knowledge that Plato is presenting through the theory of Forms but rather believes that everything is in universal flux. So, if things are changing how is it possible to know something based on appearances. In his own words, you cannot step in the same river twice. The water you step in the first time is not there anymore, so you cannot bring the past back, change is the way of truth. In simple words, truth is in a constant state of being and not being. ... Pop art is created to display emotions instead of to show the actual piece of art. This mass cultural art movement emerged in Britain, the United States, Spain, Japan, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Russia. This movement allowed artists to break the old traditions of abstract expressionism and create new and different ideals of art with no limit. Pop art was often used in advertising for magazines and newspapers. Two of Pop art s major artists were Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein who created art in similar but also different ways. Andy Warhol was an American Pop artist. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1928. He died on February 22, 1987, in New York, New York. His parents were Czechoslovakian immigrants named Ulja and Ondrej Warhola. He was a very smart child, but he suffered from a nervous disorder. This caused him to often stay home which lead him to collect pictures and listen to the radio about current events. All of this created his love for pop culture and modern celebrities. When he was sixteen years old, he graduated from high school and went to Carnegie Institute of Technology. It is constantly changing as we adapt and multiply our species, inheriting and letting go of certain traits to implement into the next person. Their means of transportation along our web of knowledge is (or forms of) language. People with common interests or opinions can take a common idea, and adapt or twist it to make it suit their purposes, making the idea itself take on a biased view among others unaware of the original intent of said idea. • 36. The Matchmaker Analysis The golden age of the big budget musical may remain lost to the annals of old Hollywood, some may argue that classics will always be better than their reimagined counterparts, but this is hardly the case in all circumstances. The 1969 big screen adaptation of Hello, Dolly! proves that sometimes the original star power of a cast can be overridden decades later. The 2017 Broadway revival of Hello Dolly! supports the idea that while people may become accustomed to hearing a song a certain way, a new interpretation of the materials can lead to blockbuster success. Despite the glitter and grandeur of the on screen film adaptation s costuming and set design, the 2017 iteration of the musical, based on Thornton Wilder s play The Matchmaker, shows that big budgets and sweeping landscapes are not needed; opting to go with garishly bright pastels and impeccable choreography to stir the imaginations and win the hearts of millions of theatergoers. Starring Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau, the 1969 film certainly attempted to bring the star power but hostility that developed between Walter Matthau and Barbra Streisand (TCM) turned into anything but a love story when presented on the big screen. • 37. Summary Of The Exegesis Of Rappaccini s Daughter Though the two previously analyzed parabolic short stories assist in showing Hawthorne s writing style and goals, the exegesis of his most convoluted and allegorical story, Rappaccini s Daughter, truly accomplishes this exposition of Hawthorne s work. In Padua, Italy, Giovanni Guasconti rents a room with a view of Dr. Rappaccini s garden. He meets professor Dr. Pietro Baglioni, who tells Giovanni that be must be cautious of Rappaccini since he is heartless and cares only about his scientific work. Giovanni notices Rappaccini s beautiful daughter, Beatrice, as falls in love. They meet with each other several times and Giovanni realizes he has become poisonous, as plants are dying in his hands. Baglioni reveals that Beatrice has grown up constantly exposed to poison and is poisonous herself, so he gives Giovanni a vial of medicine to give to Beatrice as a cure, but when she takes it she promptly dies. Literary critic Roy R. Male introduces the involved nature of the story and expresses, This complexity manifests itself first in the objects of the garden, the Eden of the present world (Male). Just like The Birthmark, Rappaccini s Daughter tells of death caused by human pride, but this is trivial. The allegorical nature of this story lies in its biblical connection. Rappaccini s garden symbolizes the garden of Eden and the story and its characters directly follow that of the creation of man, the creation of sin and the breakage of worldly perfection. Giovanni represents Adam, Beatrice is Eve, Rappaccini plays God and Baglioni acts as Satan. Giovanni and Beatrice are Adam and Eve since they are two innocent characters who fall victim to the deception and sinful malicious intent of Baglioni. Rappaccini is God because his primary role is to create and construct. Since Hawthorne makes an allegorical link to the Garden of Eden, the story can be perceived in the context of the New Testament. Assuming the reader comprehends Hawthorne s connection, they are then able to interpret a much more involved story with greater insight. Rappaccini s Daughter can be interpreted as a parable, but can also be seen as the more complex allegory that it is. Further, Hawthorne exposes a duality in evil through his allegory. Male ... People rely on their news sources as their gateway to the rest of the world and when these gateways are compromised by the government, the people of those countries lose their ability to fight injustice. In my illustration, the two individuals are blindfolded to demonstrate the national blindness in present day America. Our cluelessness of what happens beyond our country is a direct result of our government s choke hold on the press; America is known as a country of freedom and yet we are often isolated from the knowledge we deserve to know illustrated by the use of the umbrella above the table. The pillar connecting the barbed wire fence surrounding Gaza has the American colors because the United States government has an incriminating role in what has been happening in Palestine, but it is so far removed beyond the picturesque Hollywood Hills that not many people know about it. Within the barricaded fence, a bomb is titled the truth , because the truth of the Israeli Palestinian conflict is that devastation has been tearing Gaza apart. The bomb is colossal in proportion to its own fencing to exemplify how large that devastation is. I hope that upon my audience seeing my art, they will grow intrigued and actively seek out the truth about the government s role in the Middle East. Inspirations for my piece come from a recent flux of political cartoons in response to Trump s election. I was amazed at how cartoons, which can be so incredibly simple, can convey such intense and important messages to its audience by the uses of symbolism, irony, and exaggeration. To sum up, this art piece asks for Americans to dare and pull off the blindfold. By using the DCF method, the total fair market value of the business entity is calculated by discounting future projected cash flows back to the date of valuation. At the end of the projection period, a residual or terminal value is calculated and discounted to its present value at the date of the valuation. The theory behind the discounted cash flow method is that an entity s value is equal to its present value of its expected future cash flow. This method is considered the most detailed analysis because it is thorough in nature and aids the owner to get a true picture of the firm value. This consists of certain steps which involve developing a method to be used to project future earnings of cash flow, a risk adjusted discount rate, discounting the projected cash flow to the date of the valuation, and capitalizing the terminal year s projection into a residual value using the discount rate less the growth rate. In this case, we estimated the growth rate of 2.3%, and the summation of the present values of the discounted cash flows and terminal value. This method is the most precise method in comparison to the Venture Capitalist method despite the notion that there is an uncertainty of cash flow projections. Girl on the Escalator was an official selection of the 2016 LA Shorts Festival and the 2016 Raindance Film Festival. It was directed by Kayhan Lannes Ozmen. Charles Bukowski. What can be said about him that hasn t already been said? I think he is a very talented poet but also controversial. He was an alcoholic and in his poems, he would talk about ogling women in a way that is slightly uncomfortable to read. Yet, he also wrote uplifting, compassionate poems about the poor and suffering. He wasn t someone that could be easily labeled as a writer, he jumped around and wrote exactly what he wanted. Bukowski was always honest in his poems, and many of them read like the pages of a diary or the streams of thought that we can t see. His honesty polarized him with some audiences because people like it when they can easily label something and don t need to think on it, but Bukowski couldn t be named one thing.
