all have many similarities. First of all they all are about the lives of Native
American tribes. In The coyote , the tribe was the Pueblo which lived in Mexico.
In the short story The Origin of The Buffalo and The Corn , their tribe was the
Cheyenne tribe and they lived in the Great Plains so they had enough land to grow

of The Buffalo and The Corn the life lesson is to listen to your elders and take care of

Cheyenne tribe how to grow crops successful. She also got the buffalo to follow the
tribe. In the last short story The First False Face the life lesson was to never be

Gretel Ehrlich s The Solace Of Open Spaces
The statements by Gretel Ehrlich in the Solace of Open Spaces, the journey of
Carrie Watts in The Trip to Bountiful, and the pilgrimage of Scott Momaday in The
Way to Rainy Mountain, all involve the country as a spiritual home that de stresses
the mind. Through first hand experience, I will discuss my trip to Santa Barbara.
Ehrlich s quote, Space has a spiritual equivalent and can heal what is divided and
burdensome in us, relates to my experiences in Samarkand, Santa Barbara. Ever
since I was a child, my familyand I would always visit Santa Barbara. My relatives
lived there and they would invite us to stay and sleep over. It was a quiet
neighborhood on a slope. Full of houses with Spanish Colonial architecture. Every
visit was like a reunion. My relatives always gave us a warm welcome and were
very excited to see us. Often they panicked to prepare food and tidy up the house, but
my Mom would always calm them down and volunteer to help my aunt and uncle
cook. Meanwhile,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Open space heals you, it takes away the burdensome within us. Space provides
nothingness that needs to be filled. Filled with stimulated thought and rediscovery
of oneself. The grassy field allowed my cousin and I to remember our original
personas. All of our inner worries were released, to remember how simple and joyous
our lives used to be.
At the end of the movie The Trip to Bountiful, Ludie Watts contends that it doesn t
do any good remembering. To me, remembering the past is everything. You must
remember, to remind yourself of your purpose and identity. Overtime you may
change in personality, especially with environmental factors like work and wives.
That is why it is necessary to remember: to recognize your originality and goal in
life. If you don t, you will regret the decision you made to astray from that goal. You
may bring yourself to confusion and loss of aspiration. Essentially, you just won t be

Independent Single Mothers
Single mothers are usually portrayed in film and television programs as being weak
and needing something to be dependent, usually on a man. Five single mothers in the
film The Single Moms Club come together to support each other in areas that are
their strong suit. These women in this film do carry the gender roles that are put on
women, as well as break many of the gender roles. I will be focusing on three out of
the five women in this film. These three women all share the same gender role theme
of being a caregiver. Each of these women have their own stories, different
backgrounds and gender roles that they represent, and some break the roles of being

New Malthusian s idea of the future of the population growth is that it will continue

advances into consideration. However, resources are unequally distributed and that

In the other hand, Anti Malthusians believe that with the technologyadvances, earth

There are several factors besides food production that would affect the population on

The Plague Dbq
The black death is believed to have began in central Asia in the mid thirteen
hundreds, and killed millions. After it spread across Asia it was then carried down
the Silk Road reaching Crimea by 1343. Scientists believe that the plague was
carried by fleas on rodents, such as rats, being normal passengers traveling on
merchant ships across the Mediterranean. The fleas were believed to have bacteria
called Yersinia pestis, which is commonly present in the flea population on ground
rodents in certain areas such as Central Asia, Kurdistan, Western Asia, Northern
India, and Uganda. Scientists believe that all three outbreaks of the epidemic began
in China. The disease was devastating to the economy of Europe and Asia, making it
hard for people to find employees, and forcing them to pay higher wages. The plague

The people weren t sure how they were catching the quickly spreading disease, and

thirty to sixty percent of Europe s population. The total world population is
believed to have dropped from four hundred and fifty million down to three hundred
and fifty million, which is a hundred million people or possibly more. The plague
resulted in a series of religious, social, and economic outburst, which had great
effects on European history. The most common symptom of this disease was the
occurrence of tumors around the groin, armpits, and neck. When opened, these
tumors oozed and bled. The tumors would soon be followed by fever and the
vomiting of blood. Victims would usually die between two to seven days after
catching the disease. After dying, the armies would collect the bodies and throw them
over the walls of the city. Other symptoms of the plague was a lung condition, which
caused difficulty breathing, horrible infections to the respiratory system, and

Something that I believe really took away from this movie would be the editing.
The transition between scenes is quite frankly abrupt and distracting; at the end of
several scenes, the entire screen would intensify to a bloody red color, which
forced me to look away because my eyes hurt from looking at it. Another bad case
of editing can be seen more towards the end of the film. When Francois finds
Therese s corpse by the side of the pond, he embraces her in his arms, with his head
on her chest devastated. When I first watched this scene, I thought there was some
sort of glitch with the system because the scene started replaying about ten times.
It appears that Agnes Varda s intention was to make this scene as emotional and
dramatic as possible, but when a clip is replayed constantly it can be
misinterpreted as comedic; everyone watching, including myself, burst out in
laughter when we saw this part of the movie. From my perspective, another flaw in
Happiness that made it a second rate film was the plot. I was confused by various
parts of the film and even after the film was finished, I had so many questions left.
From just the opening scenes of this movie, it is quite obvious that Francois and
Therese are deeply in love with each other; often times they will express their love for
each other through physical touch and sexual intercourse. But I
The Presence Of A Gun Essay
Scholars have often debated whether guns influence an individual to commit a
violence act. It is hypothesized that an individual in the presence of a firearm, has an
increased likelihood of exhibiting anti social behaviors. The studies presented, will
investigate whether the presence of a gun, is a stimulus for aggressive behaviors
(Berkowitz Lepage, 1967; Anderson, Benjamin Bartholow, 1998; Bartholow,
Anderson, Carnagey Benjamin, 2005). Studies regarding whether gunownership
influences the likelihood of abnormal behaviors in adolescence will be examined
(Cunningham, Henggler, Limber, Melton Nation, 2000; Sprinkles, 2007). Gun
ownership rates and various violent acts will also be investigated, such as homicide
rates and suicide rates (Hemenway Miller, 2000; Killias, Van Kesteren
Rindlisbacher, 2001; Gius, 2009; Siegel, Ross King, 2013). Extrinsic factors
including race/ethnicity, culture, and the environment will additionally be addressed
(Cunningham et al., 2000; Sprinkles, 2007; Rajan, Namdar Ruggles, 2015). After all
research has been analyzed, it will be apparent that the presence of a firearmis
correlated to aggressive behaviors. Before delving into gun ownership rates, it is
important to discuss the history of experiments regarding gun presence and
aggression. An early experiment conducted by Berkowitz Lepage (1967), investigated
whether the presence of a weaponelicited hostile behaviors. The study observed 100
male students, who were attending
The Zoot Riots Of WWII
WWII was by far the biggest devastation involving deaths due to war. With 60 to 80
million deaths, WWII was one of the worst chapters in American history. At first the
United States thought that Europe s conflict could be obtained and kept within the
country. So the US did not react as quickly as we now know they should have. Japan
was a country that went on a short power trip which later would cause the United
Statesto get involved with WWII. Japan wanted regional domination, and in
completing this mission they took it a step too far. Japan wanted to take over
Dutch East Indies and British Malaya for their oil rich resource. The US wouldn t
go down without a fight. Knowing this, Japan decided to try to have the upper and
by plotting to attack Pearl Harbor. On December 8, 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed
by the Japanese. The morning after the Pearl Harbor attack the United States
officially declared war on Japan.
Entry 2 What were the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943? First of all, zoot suits were a jazz
inspired outfit that consisted of high waisted wool trousers with loose long tailed
suit coats worn by mostly the Hispanic race. This attire gave people who wore them
a bad reputation as someone who commits crimes. These riots occurred during WWII
between Mexican American youth gangs and sailors and policeman that were
stationed near the city. June of 1943 is when the Zoot Suit Riots started taking place.
After many street fights between the zoot suits and white soldiers, there

If you have ever involved yourself with video production companies you are aware
that they can be frustrating. When I say frustration, the point I m trying to emphasize
on is that there are several to choose from, which makes it difficult and annoying

I was in the market for a professional video production company to help with some

what I wanted. Of course, they ll say anything to get your business. When in actuality,

concentrate on what I do excel in.
I almost forgot to include my end results. When I received the finished videos I
couldn t contain myself and my enthusiasm. My videos exceeded far beyond my
expectations. I was so excited to get them up and running. I just knew from the
quality and sincere dedication that they were going to be well received by the
public. My infomercial companies are thriving and I am beginning to receive a lot

company who has created excellence.

The physical distance was insignificant compared to the cultural, economic and
environmental difference of two parts. The only connection religion was not enough
to balance the enormous disparity created through economic oppression and cultural
exploitation. Language issue is the most crucial issue because it was important to
have one sole official national language. To some extent, every province was upset
as many were favour for Urdu language hence their language will be a second class

their mother language. Urdu was spoken in the West and Bangla was spoken in the
East. Therefore, because of this language issue, language movement were set up and

Bangladesh from Pakistan was due to cultural differences. Pakistan was a multiracial

cultural differences led to the rise of ethics nationalism. It was Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto
who were aware about this cultural divide.
Moreover, contemptuous attitudes of West Pakistanis towards Bengal made the East

Comparing Christian And Aristotelian Views
1.For Aristotle, the contemplative life is directed towards the divine while the
practical life is directed towards the human good. In Aristotle, these ways of life are
distinct. But the Jewish and Christian faith perspectives create possibilities for a unity
between the contemplative and the practical that is not possible from an Aristotelian
perspective. Explain.
In the Jewish and Christian faiths it is possible to work towards both the divine
and human good at the same time. For example, in Luke, there is the parable of the
Good Samaritan. This story tells of a traveller who is beaten up on the side of the
road. A priest walks by, and then a Levite. Both ignore the beaten man. Then a
Samaritan walks by. He assists the man and pays for a place for him to stay. He is
loving and saving his neighbor despite traditional rivalry between Jews and
Samaritans. By saving his neighbor and loving his neighbor he is loving God. Any
person who acts in this way is working towards both divine and human good at the
same time. Therefore this parable proves that, unlike in the Aristotelian point of view,
in Christian and Jewish faith perspectives it is both possible and probable that

For example, he would have seen the son as culpable for his actions, due to the fact
that they were distinctly made choices, rather than voluntary actions. These choices
showed that the son was clearly not acting in a virtuous manner. The father also made
choices in this parable, but his choices would be seen by Aristotle as much more
virtuous. He loves his son to such a degree that he is willing to make sacrifices for
him. This courage to save his son is relative, however. If someone who did not feel
the same connection and love for the boy saved him from his bad decision making,
they would be seen as even more virtuous because they are saving someone to whom
they have absolutely no
Joe Hill Magicians
Introduction
Audiences have at all times throughout history been amazed by illusions performed
for them for the purpose of entertainment by the means of magicians. Some of these
magicians include David Copperfield, who made the Statue of Liberty disappear,
Harry Houdini, who was most famous for his escape tricks, and Robert Houdin, who
would read the audience s mind. In spite of the fact that many of these magicians
appear to have done their magic through some supernatural force, in reality, the
magicians use their sleight of hand in order to change the perspective of the audience.
According to the article, Magic as a Cooperative Deceit, the author states that magic
is an attempt to change the belief of the audience that something out ... Show more

The psychology of magic tricks is also affected from person to person. The
experience of an individual may be different among other individuals based on past
experience and expectations. For example, this article, There s more to magic than
meets the eye includes the illusion of a ball being thrown up; however, the ball
stays in the illusionist s hand. About 68% of people fall for the trick because of
the fact that their expectation is that the ball will go up and their past experience
is the fact that they have seen a ball thrown up numerous times. Furthermore, the
social cuing of the illusionist inspired the social cuing of the audience into
believing the direction of the ball to go up. Consequently, this shows that the
audience of a magician may not all be affected and some may experience no
illusion. In addition, Illusions are based on many things. A good magician uses
The Cooperative Principle . This law basically states that the cause precedes the
effect in time, cause and effect are contiguous in time and place, and there is a
history of regularity in the precedence and contiguity of cause and effect. These
rules may be applied to illusions due to the fact that the magician uses the
cooperation of the audience and their sleight of hand. The cause in a simple trick
along the lines of pulling a rabbit is the magician s sleight of hand and the effect

perceives a key point from the Catholic, the point of view on how to handle the

their previous lifestyle they experienced for examples, child molestation, murders or

A Common Question About My Parent s Nationality
A common question people like to ask is Where are you from? I ve always
wrestled with how to properly answer this question. I didn t know if I should
answer with my birth place, my parent s nationality or the area I spent most of
premature life at. My family have moved a lot over our life time, so much that
people started to question if my parents where in the military moving from base to
base. But they weren t, my parents emigrated from Nigeria to America in the mid
1980 s. Their first stop in America was Dallas, Texas. In Dallas my mother gave
birth to both of my older sisters. My family struggled for a well before I was born.
My mother worked as a cleaning lady in a hotel and my father was an ice cream
man driver. After 7 years of the hot state which is Texas, my parents decide to go
north and move to Minneapolis, Minnesota in pursuit of having better education
and career options, so they could properly take care of the family. On September,
24, 1994 I was born in Children s Hospital of Minneapolis, Minnesota, but nearly a
year later my family was the road again. After I turned 1 years old, I and my family
move to Tulsa, Oklahoma. We came to Tulsa because both my parents once again
found better career jobs as Nurses. I spent a short amount of time in Tulsa. I started
preschool at key elementary. I made good friends in my preschool but those
friendships where short loved because after I turned about 4 years old, me and my
family where back on the road again. This time
Data Standards And Public Health Information
Data standards are a means of creating terms and methods that are common
/universally understood which will assist in the efficient exchange of public health
information (O Carroll et al, 2010). Health Level Seven (HL7) and its individuals
give a structure (and related principles) for the exchange, reconciliation, sharing, and
recovery of electronic health data. These measures characterize how data is packaged
and conveyed between involved parties. It sets the dialect, structure and information
type needed for consistent integration between systems. HL7 principles bolster
clinical practice and the administration, conveyance, and assessment of health
services, and are perceived as the most generally utilized in the world (hl7.org).
Creating and utilizing uniform information measures has been found to be one of the
significant difficulties of public healthorganizations as they advance toward the
utilization of electronic trade of information rather than the paper form they have
been utilizing (O Carroll et al, 2010). Health information is vastly available not only
to health professionals but also to the layman. The growing use and availability of the
internet has permitted and facilitated the distribution of information. However,
without proper data standards by which public health institutions can abide by, there
will be a lag in their ability to share and capitalize on the use of health information. A
communal approach to representing and exchanging public health data
How Is Harry Bitter A Dynamic Character
Harry s normal blue eyes began to burn a fiery golden yellow. In the short story Dark
They Were and Golden eyed ,by Ray Bradbury, the protagonist Harry Bittering
becomes stranded on Mars but is unaware that he is slowly becoming a
Martian.Harry is a dynamic character because in the beginning he is nervous and
alert, then determined to leave Mars, and at the end he becomes calm.
The first reason that Harry is a dynamic character is because in the beginning he was
very nervous and frantic. For an example, when Harry was uptight about all the
changes he seen happening around him.In the text it states He felt his heart
pounding, and he was afraid Cora, what s happening? pg(5). This demonstrates Harry
s jittery attitude towards the environment around him that he s trying not to adapt
to.Harry is a character of change because this is only one of the character traits that he

He becomes devoted to rebuild the destroyed ship and return to Earth even if no one
took him seriously. The text reads Harry Bittering moved into the metal shop to build

uses this example in order to demonstrate how persistent Harry is.Therefore the
change in Harry s character traits give him the label of being a character that is
Similarities Between Saturday Night Fever And The
Godfather
In Saturday Night Fever, portrayal of scenes and actions that were once prohibited
due to the Hays Code allowed the characters to develop while giving a sense and
portrayal of who Italian Americans are. Many of the characteristics exhibited by
Tony, his friends and other characters relate to the first time they were explored
and used in the film, The Godfather. For example, in Saturday Night Fever, there is
a scene in which Tony and his friends are beat up by the Barracudas (Hispanic
gang) and vice versa, when they go to get payback and avenge their friend Gus who
was hospitalized (AFI). This relates to scenes in which the Godfather displayed
brutality, blood, and mob violence (Browne). In general, such violence would be
prohibited in films
Imbalance Of Bullying
Bullying is a problem that is on the rise in society; however, many individuals have a
distorted view of what bullying entails. Usually when someone thinks of bullying,
they assume that it is a standard part of a child s life. This view, on the contrary, is
erroneous. Bullying is actually abnormal behavior, many times, leaving victims with
a dismantled self identity. Since some people do not understand the consequences of
bullying, the actions of the bully often go unnoticed and are perceived as kids being
kids . The issue of bullying goes deeper than that nevertheless. Despite the
erroneous views that many individuals hold towards bullying, it is still a distortion
of normal behavior in children. There are many definitions that adequately define
bullying; however, a simple definition is given by Kas Dekker, Bullying is defined
as a person being repeatedly exposed to negative actions on the part of one or more
other persons and has difficulty defending him or herself. (Dekker, 2013 pg 228) In
this quote, Dekker is describing a power imbalance between the bully and the
victim. In a power imbalance, the bully misuses their skills whether strength, verbal,
gestural, or relational in order to either acquire their yearnings, or put another
individual down. According to Ken Rigby, Verbal bullying is the most common
form of bullying, it involves talking down to a person by either insulting them or
cruel sarcasm. (Rigby, 2003 pg 10) In this form of bullying, the bully is

Previously when a business person was selecting a respectable European jurisdiction
for opening a branch or a full company formation, the Netherlands was not among the
right options. The business conditions did not seem favourable and not justify the
cost and effort. Since then, much has changed. Today, Holland is a great platform to
enter the European markets. In Holland there is good transport system (aerial and sea
ports, such as Rotterdam, the Hague or Amsterdam) and more opportunities for
import and export. In the Netherlands there are enough qualified specialists in
different spheres. Evaluating the convenience of doing business in general, a
company incorporated in the Netherlands is more credible than a company of Cyprus

which two different newspapers a tabloid (The Mirror) and a broadsheet (The

language as well as the basics of how the story is put forward and told. Both papers
are reporting the same story in which Prince Philip made a statement along the lines
that guns are no more dangerous than cricket bats following a shooting at a school in

The headline claims the Prince to be foolish in the form of a pun foolip .
In an article the lead paragraph is designed to have a large impact on the reader
which sums up the story in a short space. This is useful for people who haven t got
time to read the full article. It is also designed to interest the reader so they read
on. In The Mirror the lead paragraph is simple and bold, full of emotion and
sensational language such as sparked outrage to over exaggerate the story. The lead
paragraph is designed to be short and straight to the point but it fails to mention any
positive side to the Princes comment, which is revealed later on in the article. This
again shows signs of The Mirror being bias. The Timesis more informative and is not
bias in any way. It explains how he said that members of shooting clubs were no
more dangerous than members of golf or squash clubs . The paragraph also contains
more honest language and less sensational language and it over exaggerates less.
The final effective presentational features in the newspapers are the pictures. In The
Mirror the picture makes the Prince look stupid and foolish, in this way it ties in with
the headline. The picture has been taken at a particular moment and catches the
Prince with a stupid look on his face. Inside the

students individually, and these students ranged from high performance to low
performance. I thought this was a good choice so I could experience difference
between the different developmental levels of the students. I performed the
assessment on October 14th of 2016, in Miss. S s classroom during the students free
choice time. Of the three students that participated, one of the students receives
speech therapy. The first student that I assessed was Child 1, and he doesn t receive

feel that Johnathan could have taken his time more and really focused on sounding
the words out before saying what he thought they were. I did noticed that the mixed

Johnathan had trouble with the wordyou. When he started to spell the word he
started with OU, but then he corrected himself and spelt the word correctly. I still
marked the word as incorrect since he started spelling the word wrong. The second
student that I assessed was Child 2, and he receives speech therapy. I didn t
complete the assessment because Derek was struggling and wasn t close to saying
the words that I was pointing to. When saying some of the words he was either
correct or very close. With some of the words he was questioning himself whether he

The Battle At Little Bighorn

The battle at Little Bighorn is one of the most talked about battles in American
History. In this paper I will cover the events in history that lead to the battle, the
battle, aftermath and the lessons learned from this battle. Over one hundred years
later it is still one of the most talked about battles in Army history.
History
The battle at Little Bighorn occurred on June 25th 1876 near an Indian camp located
by the Little Bighorn River. The camp was located in the Black Hills not on a
reservation. To fully understand the battle we must first look at what lead to it. The
issues that arose in the eight years leading up to the battle would be the catalyst for
what the battle at Little Bighorn.
To begin in 1868 the Fort Laramie Treaty was signed.
The treaty s intention was to bring an understanding a civil relationship between
the Sioux tribes and the new settlers. The treaty designated land in the Black Hills
for the Native Americans to live and hunt. The land was to be protected from
settler s invasion. The times of amicable living were short lived when in 1874
General Terry sent Lt. Colonel Custer to evaluate the land in the Black Hills and to
find a location for a new Army Fort. On his expedition Lt.Col. Custer discovered
gold. The discovery of gold in the lands protected by the treaty would be the cause of
the ultimate tension between the Native Americans and the U.S government. Custer
sent accounts of the gold discovery to the newspapers,
E Commerce at Yunnan Lucky Air
E Commerce at Yunnan Lucky Air:
Introduction:
Backed by the Hainan Airlines of the China, Yunnan Airlines was founded in 2004 as
one of the most cost effective domestic airline operating from its hub in Kunming, in
the province of Yunnan. The limited route license added to the airline s competitive
advantage and maintained its monopoly within the region. Its major competitors
include Air China and China Southern Airlines among others. As Yunnan is one of
the most attractive tourist destinations of Southern China, the airline attracted a lot of
customers and started producing profits within just three years of its inception.
This huge success was the result of a viable strategy of the company that included

A lot of factors need to be considered by the executive team of Lucky Air. An ill
devised or poorly implemented marketing plan would not only hinder the company s
growth, it would also result in the loss of the edge they have over the other companies.
The four cost components of the airline industry fuel, landing fees, aircraft leasing
and taxes has made operating Lucky Air in a productive manner a constant challenge.
Even though the company has a high competitive advantage being linked to Hainan
Airlines, it still needed to upgrade its business strategy on a regular basis to ensure
maintaining the lead they had over the other airlines. The company like all its
counterparts face a myriad of restraints including heavily regulated governmental
laws, limitation to price reduction, a low potential for rapid expansion due to
government restrictions and heavy taxes.
Lucky Air being new in the field and operating on a small geographical area has to
burden a lot of costs. The restriction on expansion of the company makes it
necessary for the airlines to lease the airplanes at a high cost and the taxes ranging
from 2% 10% makes it a challenge to manage its finances. The monopoly of Civil
Aviation Oil for fuel and National Development Reform Commission for aircraft
leasing puts a burden on the budget of the airline companies as they may dictate the
terms of their services as they see fit.
Another factor that Lucky Air has to keep in mind while devising its business

The Tipping Point By Malcom Gladwell
In The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell, Gladwell discusses how ideas are
spread as a result of social epidemics. Through his concepts of The Law of the Few,
The Stickiness Factor, and The Power of Context, we can examine how certain sticky
trends spread through our society. The trend I will be examining now is the current
manbun epidemic. The so called man bun came to be the latest fashion trend for men
due in part to the internet and to other factors as discussed in Gladwell s The Tipping
Point. 2015 was a year of many different trends spreading throughout society, but
arguably none more polarizing than that of the man bun. Men growing their hair
out long is nothing new, but 2015 was populated with men of all ages pulling their
hair into buns at the top of their head. We have now reached a point in history
where a Google search for man bun will reveal headlines such as Official Site for
Manbuns and Long Hair or Am I Man Enough for a Man Bun? , and advertisements
for Clip On Instant Man Bun. How did we get to this point? A few years prior to
this and such a search may have revealed nothing more than an ironic desert recipe.
How did our society get to this point, then? According to Gladwell, trends like this
that become popular overnight due to their ability to spread like the flu. Such trends
can be labeled social epidemics and Gladwell uses three rules to describe their ability
to spread so rapidly. The first rule Gladwell describes is termed The Law of

Human Mind Control
OCD is a phrase that gets to the existential core of worry, a clenched, demonic
doubting that overrides evidence, empiricism, plain common sense (Slater234). The
meme theory states that a meme consists of everything that is passed from person to
person (Blackmore 37). In Strange Creatures by Susan Blackmore and Who Holds
the Clicker? by Lauren Slater both authors discuss the control humans have over their
minds. In Who Holds the Clicker Lauren Slater discusses DBS (deep brain
simulation), which is a type of psychosurgery in which electrical impulses are sent to
certain portions of the brain to control and change the emotions one feels. She
discusses both the positive and negatives of deep brain simulation through a specific
patient named Mario and also presents the control DBS can have over one s mind.
Similarly, Blackmore in Strange Creatures discusses the meme theory, which consists
of any idea that is passed down from person to person. Both authors provide
information that allows people to draw conclusions relating to why people do not
have control over their minds. Even though some people believe that humans do have
control over their minds, Blackmore and Slater both successfully portray that in
actuality humans do not have any control over their minds because human thoughts
and ideas are unoriginal products of external forces, many human thoughts occur at
deeper level of consciousness, and
Sociotechnical Systems and Management Styles Essay
Sociotechnical Systems and Management Styles In today s advanced technological
workplace, companies are looking into several new management styles and concepts.
Among them is a theory called sociotechnical systems (STS). This is a theory that
has been around for about 50 years and is still being attempted for use today. Many
managers along with one member of the STS founding team, Fred Emery, argue that
STS is obsolete; other managers have implemented STS with great success. With this
new style of managementpractice, several changes will have to take place. These
changes along with several examples of both positive and negative effects will be
examined throughout this essay.

Basically these principles 1. Scan the environment looking for influences on social
and technological subsystems Causation 2. Implement effects to combat
environmental changes Optimization and 3. Design the effects to achieve
implementation Design. The extent of these efforts often result in complaints among
many high level managers. Many managers wonder if all the required time will pay
off. Skeptical managers will often turn aside from this style of management.
Is STS Obsolete (Practical)?
Sociotechnical systems have been around for a long time now. Conventional STS
has been integrated into classroom instruction at the graduate level. While trying to
do this, STS lost many of its unwritten detailed subject matter and has been made
conceptually complicated as well as mathematically complex.3 Another problem
that Fred Emery states in his article is the overselling of STS. The pressures for
STS to work by itself have raised the theory at an extremely high standard waiting
for pitfalls in the process. Steve Canbana in his article on participative design states,
Over the years it has become apparent that traditional socio technical systems (STS)
design contains a number of pitfalls that frequently have led to implementation failure
or partial success. 4 A third issue lies in problems with

My theme Outsiders in society how appearances can be deceiving I think is very
important to the film Edward Scissorhands; directed by Tim Burton, as the theme
is repeated throughout the film. My theme has a general importance because its
shows the other side of society that we don t get to see or notice too often. The
group of individuals on the other side constantly shows the challenges they face, and
the different ways of living are often ignored because they don t fit into the current
society. This brings up a strong contrast and compare between what society defines
as normal and what is abnormal. My theme tells us that their appearances are often
deceiving and we should learn to to give them a chance. This means you are also more

as he could open any house with his scissors. He had no knowledge of what he was
doing and was unfortunately framed and Edward being all the more vulnerable
because of his appearance. I thought Carol (a member of the suburb) makes a
strong connection to Edward s appearance by talking on the phone to the other
suburb neighbours Joyce, I just saw this strange guy driving with Peg... I didn t
get a good look at him, he looked kind of pale. I felt quite curious in the way that
Carol felt to see this new character in the suburb and shared this same feeling with
many others in the film. Edward was very welcomed by Peg (who found Edward)
and so, he meet the rest of the people in the suburb and was accepted to be more
involved in their society. This reminded me of the text: Perks of being a Wallflower,
where an anonymous person (named Charlie) describes himself as an outsider. It is
quite unique as he knows what other people say
The Vancouver Island Eco Initiatives
TThe proposal I have selected is the Vancouver Island Eco Initiatives Request
Proposals VIEI 11 02 , this proposal talks about creating a support system for the
students at Camosun College. It is economically friendly in the way that the re use,
recycle method would be put into place at both campuses. The proposalitself says that
it will create financial support for students at both campuses, but has very poor
English and vocabulary, and the main point is not made clear. Of what I could
understand the individual who wrote this paper wants to set up a studentfunded flea
market of sorts, where students could buy tables from Costco that cost $20 and
sell their textbooks, non perishable food items, etc at reasonable prices to other
students. I recommend for this proposal that whoever wrote it, go back and go
through spell check, as words like money were spelled incorrectly all the way
through, and that a lot of their vocabulary is very basic and hard to follow or
understand. The Plan section seems more like a budget than anything else, it doesn t
tell you how the student society will be brought into the mix as it mentioned in the
Introduction, or how they will garner the attention of students to volunteer and spend
the $20.00 on the table, or how the 8 000.00 a year will be distributed among
everyone involved. I recommend that the writer re visit The Plan section and actually
add in a more detailed plan, including how they plan on getting students involved,

Shin Buddhists : Zen is not the answer
On October 24, 2015 the New York Buddhist Church was holding an Autumn Festival
Service. Amanda and I attended the event from 12 4 pm. This Buddhist Church in
particular is Jodoshinshu Buddhism which originated in Japan. This type of
Buddhism is also called Shin Buddhism for short, within the school of True Pure
Land Buddhism, which is based on Mahayana Buddhism. The main temple is in
Kyoto, Japan and was founded by Shinran Shonin. This type of Buddhism is
practiced widely in Japan. The New York City location in particular was established
in 1938 by Reverend Hozen Seki and his wife, Satomi.(NYBC)
The outside of the church is very humble in appearance. It doesn t look like a place
of worship at all from the outside, but the statue of Shinran Shonin in the front makes
the building seem particularly important as you pass by. As we ascended the stairs,
there was a small garden of flowers surrounding the Shinran Statue, which survived
the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. There was a hand painted sign that said Autumn
Festival hanging from the front fence. The foundation of the church is slightly
elevated as well.
On the inside, there is a lobby with stairs going up and down, and an entrance to
another room. Here it was lined with tables of food and merchants and a silent
auction of traditional Japanese items and souvenirs. The majority of the people filling
the room were
Desiree s Baby, By Kate Chopin
In Kate Chopin s short story, Desiree s Baby, she tells the story through the eyes of
the characters. This story is told in the omniscient point of view. The omniscient point
of view means that the storyteller knows all of the thoughts and emotions of all the
characters throughout the story. In the nineteenth century there was a lot of racial
discrimination against African Americans. The protagonist is Desiree; she is formed
throughout the many situations in the short story. She is fought by the antagonist,
Armand Aubigny. He is described, as a cruel, arrogant man who, likely, would never
admit he was wrong. At the end of this story Armand s assumptions and inferences
catch up to him. An inferenceis nothing more than a guess, an assumption. Inferring
does not always get us in trouble and it would almost be impossible to not assume
throughout an entire day. Unfortunately, making some inferences can have serious
consequences. There are is a lot of foreshadowing throughout the short story that tells
us that Armand has black ancestry. There is a key part of foreshadowing, there is
another form of foreshadowing when Madame Valmonde says, the child has grown,
has changed. This is another monstrous form of foreshadowing, that there is
something different about this child and that we will find out what is different later
in the story.
It had never hit Desiree that her baby was black until one day, The baby, half naked,
lay asleep...One of La Blanche s little quadroon
Essay Confilcting Ideas of the Past in Canada
Confilcting Ideas of the Past in Canada
He has been called a prophet, a traitor, a martyr, a visionary and a madman, but
whatever one thinks of him, Louis Riel, remains one of the most controversial figures
in Canadian history. Does this man who has continued to haunt Canadian history for
more than a century after his execution, deserve all of those descriptions? After
reading three different interpretations of the rebellions, it is still difficult to decide
which is closer to the truth. All three authors retold the Metis history and although
they differ on crucial issues, there was agreement on the basic facts. The primary
difference amongst the three authors was whether the Canadian and Manitoban
governments acted in good faith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believed that an aggressive, but compassionate, New Dominion had to defeat the
uncivilized obstacles, because they were resisting progress. The natives had to fail in
their stance against the government, because they were a primitive people , standing
against the march of civilization, 1 they had to be pushed aside so the new country
could progress.
Stanley believes that up until the execution of Thomas Scott, the Red River Rebellion
was relatively non violent and the government probably would have forgiven the
Metis indiscretions, because they even continued to follow the process of conciliation
through to the passage of the Manitoba Act. Although Scott deserved some sort of
punishment for his actions against the Metis people, his actions hardly deserved the
death penalty. 2
The execution of Scott was a huge faux pas on the part of the Metis officials and it
invited terrible reprisals from the government. John A. MacDonald certainly could not
ignore the execution because half the people of his newly formed country were
calling for the head of Riel. The rebellions from here on in would take an ugly turn
and seem more about race and religion and less about negotiations between the Metis
Provisional government and the Canadian Government. The execution of Scott
caused huge problems for the government and they couldn t turn a blind eye to them.
On one side they had the

Azande from an Azande Viewpoint
The Azande from an inside perspective: Editor s notes: Azande culture is surprising
simple in structure, or at first glance from a western perspective, it appears to be
simple. This culture is very different from what Americans or even Westerners
experience on a day to day basis. The Azande culture is hierarchal and patriarchal, and
has many actions, beliefs, and superstitions that have manifested themselves out of
centuries of attempts to justify natural occurrences with a logical, understandable,
and believable explanation. What follows are Azande observations concerning
American society. American culture has many beliefs and activities that are
completely without reason. They torture their male babies when they are born by...

They dance to the sound of the drums and sing topical songs more often than not
rather obscene (gurtong.net). Some of the American society lives on farms
raising crops and animals for food, but most food is purchased at a centralized
location, and clearly not grown by most of the citizens consuming it. Adultery
seems to be a problem in America, as there is much attention given to it in the
writings and publications of the society. But it appears that nothing much is done
about it, so it must be pretty much accepted, and even when it concerns the wives
of one of the American chiefs there is usually not much rancor about it. In Azande,
we handle such things more correctly, the offending male may very well live the
remainder of his life without sexual organ, hands, or lips if found committing
adultery with the wife of one of our chiefs. Americans claim not to believe in
witchcraft, but their literature is replete with references to voodoo, bad luck,
hanging horse shoes and rabbits foots for good luck, and other claims which show
they clearly believe that misfortune can be prevented and is usually caused by
someone else s actions or wishes. When misfortune does occur and someone dies,
no attention is paid to what animal they may be re incarnated into, males are not
buried facing the East, and females are no buried facing the West. It is beyond belief

What Does The Golden Eagle Symbolize
The Golden eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in North America next to the
bald eagle, and is used as a national symbol in many countries, it symbolizes many
cultures and traditions for example the Indians. The golden eagle symbolizes many
characteristics such as grace, power. It is known as a mountain bird, which travels in
open landscapes taken over by short vegetation. Such as Alaska. A declining rate of
bald eagle populations was first caught attention by the end of 1930. Both Canada and
the states suffered from this declining phenomenon. In some areas breeding
populations vanished completely. There was a variety of reasons for the decline, that
included; loss of their home, illegal shooting and killing, pesticides, electrocution,

THE TREND OF THE FUTURE:
ELECTRIC CARS BY TESLA MOTORS
I. SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS
The concern for the environment has never been bigger than at the turn of the
century. The growing acceptance of global warming, coupled with the growing green
marketing galore gave impetus for the clamor for major auto companies to build a
better and more affordable electric car. This plus the unpredictable oil price spikes
and hikes, is intensifying the race to build the ideal car of the future at a greater
height.
The poster child of the independent electric car movement has been Tesla Motors.

It would take about 9 days to get the same amount of energy from household electric
current. Fortunately, it takes hours and not days to recharge an electric car, because it
s much more efficient. And you never have to leave home to recharge!
Electric cars are extremely simple. There s no oil to change, no filters, no clutch, no
fluids, no crazy mechanical systems. This makes the electric car so much cheaper to
operate because there s hardly any maintenance, like oil changes and emissions
checks, that internal combustion cars require.
Electric car cuts away our dependency on oil as well and frees us from the
unpredictable oil price hikes and spikes that are so common these days.
For the car savvy drivers, electric motors develop their highest torque from zero
rpms meaning fast (and silent) zero to 60 acceleration times. This means they snap
to life at the touch of the accelerator. It does 0 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, making
electric cars the fastest cars in the world. Electric cars can be direct drive, so there s
no transmission or complex gearbox. Power is applied smoothly and quietly.
Acceleration is effortless.
B. WEAKNESS
Historically, EVs have not been widely adopted because of limited driving range
before needing to be recharged, long recharging times,

Gretel Ehrlich s The Solace Of Open Spaces The statements by Gretel Ehrlich in the Solace of Open Spaces, the journey of Carrie Watts in The Trip to Bountiful, and the pilgrimage of Scott Momaday in The Way to Rainy Mountain, all involve the country as a spiritual home that de stresses the mind. Through first hand experience, I will discuss my trip to Santa Barbara. Ehrlich s quote, Space has a spiritual equivalent and can heal what is divided and burdensome in us, relates to my experiences in Samarkand, Santa Barbara. Ever since I was a child, my familyand I would always visit Santa Barbara. My relatives lived there and they would invite us to stay and sleep over. It was a quiet neighborhood on a slope. Full of houses with Spanish Colonial architecture. Every visit was like a reunion. My relatives always gave us a warm welcome and were very excited to see us. Often they panicked to prepare food and tidy up the house, but my Mom would always calm them down and volunteer to help my aunt and uncle cook. Meanwhile,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The grassy field allowed my cousin and I to remember our original personas. All of our inner worries were released, to remember how simple and joyous our lives used to be. At the end of the movie The Trip to Bountiful, Ludie Watts contends that it doesn t do any good remembering. To me, remembering the past is everything. You must remember, to remind yourself of your purpose and identity. Overtime you may change in personality, especially with environmental factors like work and wives. That is why it is necessary to remember: to recognize your originality and goal in life. If you don t, you will regret the decision you made to astray from that goal. You may bring yourself to confusion and loss of aspiration. Essentially, you just won t be the same person as you

After it spread across Asia it was then carried down the Silk Road reaching Crimea by 1343. Scientists believe that the plague was carried by fleas on rodents, such as rats, being normal passengers traveling on merchant ships across the Mediterranean. The fleas were believed to have bacteria called Yersinia pestis, which is commonly present in the flea population on ground rodents in certain areas such as Central Asia, Kurdistan, Western Asia, Northern India, and Uganda. Something that I believe really took away from this movie would be the editing. The transition between scenes is quite frankly abrupt and distracting; at the end of several scenes, the entire screen would intensify to a bloody red color, which forced me to look away because my eyes hurt from looking at it. Another bad case of editing can be seen more towards the end of the film. When Francois finds Therese s corpse by the side of the pond, he embraces her in his arms, with his head on her chest devastated. When I first watched this scene, I thought there was some sort of glitch with the system because the scene started replaying about ten times. It appears that Agnes Varda s intention was to make this scene as emotional and dramatic as possible, but when a clip is replayed constantly it can be misinterpreted as comedic; everyone watching, including myself, burst out in laughter when we saw this part of the movie. From my perspective, another flaw in Happiness that made it a second rate film was the plot. I was confused by various parts of the film and even after the film was finished, I had so many questions left. From just the opening scenes of this movie, it is quite obvious that Francois and Therese are deeply in love with each other; often times they will express their love for each other through physical touch and sexual intercourse. But I
  • 12. The Presence Of A Gun Essay Scholars have often debated whether guns influence an individual to commit a violence act. It is hypothesized that an individual in the presence of a firearm, has an increased likelihood of exhibiting anti social behaviors. The studies presented, will investigate whether the presence of a gun, is a stimulus for aggressive behaviors (Berkowitz Lepage, 1967; Anderson, Benjamin Bartholow, 1998; Bartholow, Anderson, Carnagey Benjamin, 2005). Studies regarding whether gunownership influences the likelihood of abnormal behaviors in adolescence will be examined (Cunningham, Henggler, Limber, Melton Nation, 2000; Sprinkles, 2007). Gun ownership rates and various violent acts will also be investigated, such as homicide rates and suicide rates (Hemenway Miller, 2000; Killias, Van Kesteren Rindlisbacher, 2001; Gius, 2009; Siegel, Ross King, 2013). Extrinsic factors including race/ethnicity, culture, and the environment will additionally be addressed (Cunningham et al., 2000; Sprinkles, 2007; Rajan, Namdar Ruggles, 2015). After all research has been analyzed, it will be apparent that the presence of a firearmis correlated to aggressive behaviors. Before delving into gun ownership rates, it is important to discuss the history of experiments regarding gun presence and aggression. An early experiment conducted by Berkowitz Lepage (1967), investigated whether the presence of a weaponelicited hostile behaviors. The study observed 100 male students, who were attending

At first the United States thought that Europe s conflict could be obtained and kept within the country. So the US did not react as quickly as we now know they should have. Japan was a country that went on a short power trip which later would cause the United Statesto get involved with WWII. Japan wanted regional domination, and in completing this mission they took it a step too far. Japan wanted to take over Dutch East Indies and British Malaya for their oil rich resource. The morning after the Pearl Harbor attack the United States officially declared war on Japan. Entry 2 What were the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943? First of all, zoot suits were a jazz inspired outfit that consisted of high waisted wool trousers with loose long tailed suit coats worn by mostly the Hispanic race. This attire gave people who wore them a bad reputation as someone who commits crimes. These riots occurred during WWII between Mexican American youth gangs and sailors and policeman that were stationed near the city. June of 1943 is when the Zoot Suit Riots started taking place. After many street fights between the zoot suits and white soldiers, there

  • 16. Comparing Christian And Aristotelian Views 1.For Aristotle, the contemplative life is directed towards the divine while the practical life is directed towards the human good. In Aristotle, these ways of life are distinct. But the Jewish and Christian faith perspectives create possibilities for a unity between the contemplative and the practical that is not possible from an Aristotelian perspective. Explain. In the Jewish and Christian faiths it is possible to work towards both the divine and human good at the same time. For example, in Luke, there is the parable of the Good Samaritan. This story tells of a traveller who is beaten up on the side of the road. A priest walks by, and then a Levite. Both ignore the beaten man. Then a Samaritan walks by. He assists the man and pays for a place for him to stay. He is loving and saving his neighbor despite traditional rivalry between Jews and Samaritans. By saving his neighbor and loving his neighbor he is loving God. Any person who acts in this way is working towards both divine and human good at the same time. In spite of the fact that many of these magicians appear to have done their magic through some supernatural force, in reality, the magicians use their sleight of hand in order to change the perspective of the audience. For example, this article, There s more to magic than meets the eye includes the illusion of a ball being thrown up; however, the ball stays in the illusionist s hand. About 68% of people fall for the trick because of the fact that their expectation is that the ball will go up and their past experience is the fact that they have seen a ball thrown up numerous times. Furthermore, the social cuing of the illusionist inspired the social cuing of the audience into believing the direction of the ball to go up. Consequently, this shows that the audience of a magician may not all be affected and some may experience no illusion. In addition, Illusions are based on many things. A good magician uses The Cooperative Principle . This law basically states that the cause precedes the effect in time, cause and effect are contiguous in time and place, and there is a history of regularity in the precedence and contiguity of cause and effect. These rules may be applied to illusions due to the fact that the magician uses the cooperation of the audience and their sleight of hand. The cause in a simple trick along the lines of pulling a rabbit is the magician s sleight of hand and the effect

Usually when someone thinks of bullying, they assume that it is a standard part of a child s life. This view, on the contrary, is erroneous. Bullying is actually abnormal behavior, many times, leaving victims with a dismantled self identity. Since some people do not understand the consequences of bullying, the actions of the bully often go unnoticed and are perceived as kids being kids . The issue of bullying goes deeper than that nevertheless. Despite the erroneous views that many individuals hold towards bullying, it is still a distortion of normal behavior in children. There are many definitions that adequately define bullying; however, a simple definition is given by Kas Dekker, Bullying is defined as a person being repeatedly exposed to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons and has difficulty defending him or herself. In a power imbalance, the bully misuses their skills whether strength, verbal, gestural, or relational in order to either acquire their yearnings, or put another individual down. The meme theory states that a meme consists of everything that is passed from person to person (Blackmore 37). In Strange Creatures by Susan Blackmore and Who Holds the Clicker? by Lauren Slater both authors discuss the control humans have over their minds. In Who Holds the Clicker Lauren Slater discusses DBS (deep brain simulation), which is a type of psychosurgery in which electrical impulses are sent to certain portions of the brain to control and change the emotions one feels. She discusses both the positive and negatives of deep brain simulation through a specific patient named Mario and also presents the control DBS can have over one s mind. Similarly, Blackmore in Strange Creatures discusses the meme theory, which consists of any idea that is passed down from person to person. Both authors provide information that allows people to draw conclusions relating to why people do not have control over their minds. Even though some people believe that humans do have control over their minds, Blackmore and Slater both successfully portray that in actuality humans do not have any control over their minds because human thoughts and ideas are unoriginal products of external forces, many human thoughts occur at deeper level of consciousness, and

Many managers along with one member of the STS founding team, Fred Emery, argue that STS is obsolete; other managers have implemented STS with great success. With this new style of managementpractice, several changes will have to take place. These changes along with several examples of both positive and negative effects will be examined throughout this essay. To introduce the STS theory and let the reader ... Implement effects to combat environmental changes Optimization and 3. Design the effects to achieve implementation Design. The extent of these efforts often result in complaints among many high level managers. Many managers wonder if all the required time will pay off. Skeptical managers will often turn aside from this style of management. Is STS Obsolete (Practical)? Sociotechnical systems have been around for a long time now. Conventional STS has been integrated into classroom instruction at the graduate level. While trying to do this, STS lost many of its unwritten detailed subject matter and has been made conceptually complicated as well as mathematically complex.3 Another problem that Fred Emery states in his article is the overselling of STS. The pressures for STS to work by itself have raised the theory at an extremely high standard waiting for pitfalls in the process. Steve Canbana in his article on participative design states, Over the years it has become apparent that traditional socio technical systems (STS) design contains a number of pitfalls that frequently have led to implementation failure or partial success. 4 A third issue lies in problems with
  • 40. Analysis Of The Film, Edward Scissorhands, Directed By Tim... My theme Outsiders in society how appearances can be deceiving I think is very important to the film Edward Scissorhands; directed by Tim Burton, as the theme is repeated throughout the film. My theme has a general importance because its shows the other side of society that we don t get to see or notice too often. The group of individuals on the other side constantly shows the challenges they face, and the different ways of living are often ignored because they don t fit into the current society. This brings up a strong contrast and compare between what society defines as normal and what is abnormal. My theme tells us that their appearances are often deceiving and we should learn to to give them a chance. This means you are also more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edward (the outsider) is introduced into the bright society below and I noted he is readily accepted by most as they got to know him more. Edward I thought also became happier compared to his sad face in the beginning and more confident in himself and others as he was recognised by the suburban society. However the betrayal of robbing a house by Edward later in the film meant he was framed, forced to leave and return to the place where he came from. I thought this was cruel and inhuman as Jim, who told Edward to break into the house was using him as he could open any house with his scissors. He had no knowledge of what he was doing and was unfortunately framed and Edward being all the more vulnerable because of his appearance. I thought Carol (a member of the suburb) makes a strong connection to Edward s appearance by talking on the phone to the other suburb neighbours Joyce, I just saw this strange guy driving with Peg... I didn t get a good look at him, he looked kind of pale. I felt quite curious in the way that Carol felt to see this new character in the suburb and shared this same feeling with many others in the film. Edward was very welcomed by Peg (who found Edward) and so, he meet the rest of the people in the suburb and was accepted to be more involved in their society. This reminded me of the text: Perks of being a Wallflower, where an anonymous person (named Charlie) describes himself as an outsider. It is quite unique as he knows what other people say

The Vancouver Island Eco Initiatives TThe proposal I have selected is the Vancouver Island Eco Initiatives Request Proposals VIEI 11 02 , this proposal talks about creating a support system for the students at Camosun College. It is economically friendly in the way that the re use, recycle method would be put into place at both campuses. The proposalitself says that it will create financial support for students at both campuses, but has very poor English and vocabulary, and the main point is not made clear. Of what I could understand the individual who wrote this paper wants to set up a studentfunded flea market of sorts, where students could buy tables from Costco that cost $20 and sell their textbooks, non perishable food items, etc at reasonable prices to other students. I recommend for this proposal that whoever wrote it, go back and go through spell check, as words like money were spelled incorrectly all the way through, and that a lot of their vocabulary is very basic and hard to follow or understand. The Plan section seems more like a budget than anything else, it doesn t tell you how the student society will be brought into the mix as it mentioned in the Introduction, or how they will garner the attention of students to volunteer and spend the $20.00 on the table, or how the 8 000.00 a year will be distributed among everyone involved. I recommend that the writer re visit The Plan section and actually add in a more detailed plan, including how they plan on getting students involved,

The New York Buddhist Church Bianca Rodriguez PHR 121 098WB Dr. Allison Moore 26 October 2015 Shin Buddhists : Zen is not the answer On October 24, 2015 the New York Buddhist Church was holding an Autumn Festival Service. Amanda and I attended the event from 12 4 pm. This Buddhist Church in particular is Jodoshinshu Buddhism which originated in Japan. This type of Buddhism is also called Shin Buddhism for short, within the school of True Pure Land Buddhism, which is based on Mahayana Buddhism. The main temple is in Kyoto, Japan and was founded by Shinran Shonin. This type of Buddhism is practiced widely in Japan. The New York City location in particular was established in 1938 by Reverend Hozen Seki and his wife, Satomi.(NYBC) The outside of the church is very humble in appearance. It doesn t look like a place of worship at all from the outside, but the statue of Shinran Shonin in the front makes the building seem particularly important as you pass by. As we ascended the stairs, there was a small garden of flowers surrounding the Shinran Statue, which survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. There was a hand painted sign that said Autumn Festival hanging from the front fence. The foundation of the church is slightly elevated as well. On the inside, there is a lobby with stairs going up and down, and an entrance to another room. Here it was lined with tables of food and merchants and a silent auction of traditional Japanese items and souvenirs. The majority of the people filling the room were

The omniscient point of view means that the storyteller knows all of the thoughts and emotions of all the characters throughout the story. In the nineteenth century there was a lot of racial discrimination against African Americans. The protagonist is Desiree; she is formed throughout the many situations in the short story. She is fought by the antagonist, Armand Aubigny. He is described, as a cruel, arrogant man who, likely, would never admit he was wrong. At the end of this story Armand s assumptions and inferences catch up to him. An inferenceis nothing more than a guess, an assumption. Inferring does not always get us in trouble and it would almost be impossible to not assume throughout an entire day. Unfortunately, making some inferences can have serious consequences. There are is a lot of foreshadowing throughout the short story that tells us that Armand has black ancestry. There is a key part of foreshadowing, there is another form of foreshadowing when Madame Valmonde says, the child has grown, has changed. This is another monstrous form of foreshadowing, that there is something different about this child and that we will find out what is different later in the story. It had never hit Desiree that her baby was black until one day, The baby, half naked, lay asleep...One of La Blanche s little quadroon

Essay Confilcting Ideas of the Past in Canada Confilcting Ideas of the Past in Canada He has been called a prophet, a traitor, a martyr, a visionary and a madman, but whatever one thinks of him, Louis Riel, remains one of the most controversial figures in Canadian history. Does this man who has continued to haunt Canadian history for more than a century after his execution, deserve all of those descriptions? After reading three different interpretations of the rebellions, it is still difficult to decide which is closer to the truth. All three authors retold the Metis history and although they differ on crucial issues, there was agreement on the basic facts. The primary difference amongst the three authors was whether the Canadian and Manitoban governments acted in good faith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believed that an aggressive, but compassionate, New Dominion had to defeat the uncivilized obstacles, because they were resisting progress. The natives had to fail in their stance against the government, because they were a primitive people , standing against the march of civilization, 1 they had to be pushed aside so the new country could progress. Stanley believes that up until the execution of Thomas Scott, the Red River Rebellion was relatively non violent and the government probably would have forgiven the Metis indiscretions, because they even continued to follow the process of conciliation through to the passage of the Manitoba Act. Although Scott deserved some sort of punishment for his actions against the Metis people, his actions hardly deserved the death penalty. 2 The execution of Scott was a huge faux pas on the part of the Metis officials and it invited terrible reprisals from the government. John A. MacDonald certainly could not ignore the execution because half the people of his newly formed country were calling for the head of Riel. The rebellions from here on in would take an ugly turn and seem more about race and religion and less about negotiations between the Metis Provisional government and the Canadian Government. The execution of Scott caused huge problems for the government and they couldn t turn a blind eye to them. On one side they had the

Azande from an Azande Viewpoint The Azande from an inside perspective: Editor s notes: Azande culture is surprising simple in structure, or at first glance from a western perspective, it appears to be simple. This culture is very different from what Americans or even Westerners experience on a day to day basis. The Azande culture is hierarchal and patriarchal, and has many actions, beliefs, and superstitions that have manifested themselves out of centuries of attempts to justify natural occurrences with a logical, understandable, and believable explanation. What follows are Azande observations concerning American society. American culture has many beliefs and activities that are completely without reason. They dance to the sound of the drums and sing topical songs more often than not rather obscene (gurtong.net). Some of the American society lives on farms raising crops and animals for food, but most food is purchased at a centralized location, and clearly not grown by most of the citizens consuming it. Adultery seems to be a problem in America, as there is much attention given to it in the writings and publications of the society. But it appears that nothing much is done about it, so it must be pretty much accepted, and even when it concerns the wives of one of the American chiefs there is usually not much rancor about it. In Azande, we handle such things more correctly, the offending male may very well live the remainder of his life without sexual organ, hands, or lips if found committing adultery with the wife of one of our chiefs. Americans claim not to believe in witchcraft, but their literature is replete with references to voodoo, bad luck, hanging horse shoes and rabbits foots for good luck, and other claims which show they clearly believe that misfortune can be prevented and is usually caused by someone else s actions or wishes. When misfortune does occur and someone dies, no attention is paid to what animal they may be re incarnated into, males are not buried facing the East, and females are no buried facing the West. It would take about 9 days to get the same amount of energy from household electric current. Fortunately, it takes hours and not days to recharge an electric car, because it s much more efficient. And you never have to leave home to recharge! Electric cars are extremely simple. There s no oil to change, no filters, no clutch, no fluids, no crazy mechanical systems. This makes the electric car so much cheaper to operate because there s hardly any maintenance, like oil changes and emissions checks, that internal combustion cars require. Electric car cuts away our dependency on oil as well and frees us from the unpredictable oil price hikes and spikes that are so common these days. For the car savvy drivers, electric motors develop their highest torque from zero rpms meaning fast (and silent) zero to 60 acceleration times. This means they snap to life at the touch of the accelerator. It does 0 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, making electric cars the fastest cars in the world.
