Compare And Contrast The American Empire And Ottoman Empire
Throughout history there has been times when empire building and expansion were very popular.
During the Early Modern Era, from 1450 1750, this occurred a lot. The European, Russian, Chinese,
Mughal and, Ottoman empires were all being built around the same time. An empire is a group of
states or countries under one supreme ruler. When the empire is divided by an ocean or has part of it
distant from the other, the part away from the mainland is known as a colony and the homeland is the
Mother Country. This took place many times during this time period when the Americas were first
discovered by people native to the Eastern Hemisphere. Between 1450 and 1750 AD, the European,
and the Russian, Chinese, Mughal and Ottoman empires were similar ... Show more content on

The European empires colonized the Americas, so they had to cross the Atlantic ocean to get there.
This gave them more goods to trade with because the Americas had different natural resources than
Europe and Asia. The empires without colonies had faster trade because there wasn t that great
distance but the new things they needed they got from the empires with colonies in the Americas. The
empires with the colonies in America had the advantage. The European Empires were also different
from the Russian, Chinese, Mughal, and Ottoman Empires in that Europe hurt the unintentionally
natives of the land they took over while the other empires did not. Since Europe was building empires
in another continent, many things would be different. A major difference was the immune systems of
the people. The europeans had immunities to certain diseases such as bubonic plague, pneumonic
plague,, influenza, measles, scarlet fever, smallpox, and tuberculosis, because they had been exposed
to them before. Since the Native Americans were never exposed to them, they never built immunities.
When the Europeans came to the Americans they carried the diseases without knowing. Making
majority of the population sick. Tribe after tribe they died because they could not fight these diseases.
This clearly made more room for the Europeans but in a tragic way. Similarly, the European Empires
were different from the Russian, Chinese, Mughal, and Ottoman Empires in their reasonings for
expansion. Europe expanded across the Atlantic Ocean because they were geographically at an
advantage. They had access to this new land the for the other places to get to it would either take too
long or they would physically have to go through the European s land to get there. They had this
advantage and took it

Aqr Momentum Fund
Overview
Momentum is a phenomenon shows that well performed stocks continue to outperform their peers
while poor performed stocks continue to underperform. Thus, more mutual funds use this powerful
strategy to draw a broad range of investors by getting higher risk adjusted returns. AQR is a hedge
fund based in Greenwich, Connecticut, offering investing products that applies price phenomenon
known as momentum. This case study enables investors to get a closer look at AQR s momentum
fund.

Traditional momentum strategy
According to the case, there were four differences between AQR s retail momentum strategy and
traditional momentum strategy.
1. The retail strategy can only take long positions on winner stocks, while the traditional one can also
short the loser stocks to maximize returns.
2. As an open ended mutual fund, AQR has to maintain certain level of liquidity and be ready to return
capital to investors when they demand, while the traditional strategy used by hedge funds can require
a lock up period and a long redemption notice period.
3. AQR s strategy faced more stringent reporting and compensation requirements.
4. AQR s strategy was required by regulators to be sufficiently diversified among assets, industries as
well as companies. And to compare the profitability of both strategies, we estimated the expected

The Hmong In The Vietnam War
In the 1960s, to the 1970s, the U.S. entered the war with the South Vietnamese against the Vietcong
(which is known as the Vietnam War), but there was also an unknown ally that backed the United
States during this time. They were the Hmong. For thousands of years, the Hmong was a self
sustaining, remote group of people who lived in the mountains of Laos ( The Split Horn: The Journey
). The Hmong were able to stay out of conflicts with others until the Vietnam War literally reached
their doorsteps, in which forcing the Hmong people out of their homeland and had them seeking
refuge in the U.S.

Compare And Contrast Still Life And Still Life
Each artist creates artwork using their own distinct style and creativity. When comparing artwork
between different artists, it is evident that certain visual elements and principles of design resonate
more with some artists than they do with others. Even though artwork tends to be original, often times
it is easy to find similarities when comparing artwork. When comparing Still Life by Giorgio Morandi
to Classic Landscape by Charles Sheeler, it is apparent that there are many similarities and differences
in the visual elements and principles of design used by the artists when creating these works of art.
One visual element that is used in both of these paintings is the use of lines. Both paintings use lines,
more specifically contour lines, to create boundaries and add definition to the objects in the painting.
By using contour lines, we are able to clearly see the shape of the pottery in Still Life and we are able
to make out the unique shapes in the railroad tracks and in the sky in Classic Landscape. Clearly both
artists believed that using contour lines would add to the appearance of the painting which is why both
included this visual element in their artwork. While both artists used contour lines to enhance the
appearance of their paintings, the direction of the lines used by the artists is very different and helps
provide a unique feel for the painting that each artist created. Still Life by Giorgio Morandi uses a lot
of curved lines that provide a calm

Frankenstein Chapter 6 Chapter Summaries
Genesis Chapter three is crucial chapter in scripture; through this chapter we have a tendency to or
able to answer the queries of life. Why is there evil in the world? Why do people die? Why is life
hard? Is there any hope? We have a tendency to learn the planet that we have a tendency to occupy,
wasn t the manner it was originally created. In our day and age our world may be a fallen world that is
separated from God its creator. This chapter helps explain these questions to us. In the third chapter,
the angelic world has its own fall. This fall within the angelic world, intersects the physical world of

The Characteristics Of Male And Women In Detective Novels
In detective novels and films, men characters are portrayed to be the definition of a masculine male
and women are portrayed as the persuasive, and vulnerable female. The man detective is grounded,
straightforward, attentive to detail, and a lone wolf. Women are portrayed as a distraught, damsel in
distress, not independent searching for a man for support and saving. In the film, The Big Sleep
directed by Howard Hawks and written by Raymond Chandler creates the character Detective
Marlowe who interest and passion is his detective work. He shows no emotion to not make himself
vulnerable to the outside world and all the people that are connected with it. In detective stories
women are portrayed as being flirtatious using the title of being a women to get what they want. A
damsel in distress is what the majority of women play in detective novels. They turn to the detective
or other men in the story for protection and guidance. Carmen is presented as a flirtatious,
promiscuous woman but yet evil and tainted.
In the novel Too Many have lived and They Can Only Hang You Once both written by Dashiell
Hammett introduces the reader to Detective Samual Spade who similar to Detective Marlowe
dedicated his time and efforts into solving crimes, catching killers, and protecting the people s safety.
He creates a hard exterior to the world and shows no sympathy or emotion. There are many similar
characteristic traits shared between both Detective Marlowe and Detective Spade. The man

Oedipus Rex, Hamlet, Willy Loman Comparison Essay
Still, the Truth Remains
An immense desire for personal satisfaction, and extraordinary reputation can often result in a sickly,
perverse distortion of reality. In Sophocles Oedipus Rex, a man well known for his intellect and
wisdom, finds himself blind to the truth of his life, and his parentage. William Shakespeare s Hamlet
also contains a character that is in search of the truth, which ultimately leads to his own demise, as
well as the demise of many around him. Arthur Miller s play, The Death of a Salesman, tells of a
tragic character so wrapped up in his delusional world, that reality and illusion fuse, causing an
internal explosion that leads to his downfall. Each play enacts the struggle of a man attempting to
come to grips ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oedipus foolish decisions ultimately lead to his downfall in the play. Oedipus chooses to kill Laios.
He chooses to marry Iocaste. He chooses to forcefully, and publicly, assume the mission of
discovering the identity of Laios murderer saying ironically, I say I take the son s part, just as though I
were his son, to press the fight for him and see it won, (633). He proceeds on this mission and chooses
to ignore the warnings of Creon, Iocaste, Teiresias, the messenger, the shepherd, and anyone who
attempts to stand between him and the truth; and, he chooses to blind himself. In the end, Oedipus
most foolish choice prevails throughout the play; the choice of illusion over reality ultimately costs
him his life.
Similar to the quest for truth in Oedipus case, so does Hamlet lead to his own decease. In the first act
of William Shakespeare s Hamlet, after Hamlet is aware of the tormented ghost of his father walking
on the ramparts, he goes to witness it for himself. This immediately exemplifies the theory that
Hamlet, like Oedipus, is in search of the truth, until he realizes it is too much to bear. Subsequent to
seeing the apparition, he is convinced to avenge his father s murderer. The ghost tells him, Revenge
his foul and most unnatural murder, (29). As Hamlet lays the trap for the new King Claudius, he is
procrastinating in order to solve his self doubt. Even after the ghost tells Hamlet how his father was
murdered, Hamlet has the players act

In this essay I will be assessing the different areas of a student transitioning to university. I will be
discussing the key issues and challenges, which students may experience within their transitions and
how they will be able to deal with the difficulties they may have during their first year of university, in
addition to this there are strategies and actions they can take in order for their transition to be
effective. The experience students have can all vary on different students individual perspectives. This
could all determine on the kind of students that will be studying at the university, firstly you have
students who will be studying within their region or those who decides to move abroad to study which
are known as international students.
When students transition to university, there are many challenges and issues that students will
encounter. Briggs, A., Clark, J, and Hall, I, (2012, p2) mentions in his article a significant social
displacement, which may be intensified where the student is mature, is the first in their family to
attend university . This indicates that students may feel pressured by their family members and having

Anterograde Amnesia In The Movie Memento

Because of the disorder, throughout the movie you ll see that Leonard is forced to leave himself

Evaluation
The psychological disorder portrayed throughout the movie Memento is Anterograde
Amnesia. According to the dictionary, anterograde amnesia is amnesia caused by brain damage
in which the memory loss relates to events occurring after the damage. In the movie, Leonard s
inability to recall the information tracing his wife s death without assistance was an example of
amnesia. His ability to only remember things fifteen minutes at a time made the type of amnesia
anterograde. People who suffer with amnesia from brain injuries have a hard time recalling

things because of damage to the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the part of the brain that
acts as a gateway through which new fact information must pass before being permanently
stores in memory (Myers, 2010).
Living with anterograde amnesia affected the character in more ways than one. The
struggle of living with the disorder caused Leonard to be very emotional throughout the

The Greene Brothers s Influence And Creation Of A New Style
By 1893, the Greene brothers established their practice in Pasadena. In their earlier works, their styles
varied from New England Shingle, Mission, and Dutch revival. Yet, as explained previously, they later
became influenced by Japanese architectural styles. Interestingly, their materiality styles also evolved
once they became influences by the Arts and Crafts Movement. Given their expertise with
woodworking and metal working learned through the Manual Training School, The Greene brothers s

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
Wilde s The Importance Of Being Earnest explores various themes of love and marriage, especially in
Act 1, where marriage in Victorian society is widely contradicted as a very pleasant state, instead
using various comedic devises, such as puns, double entendres and inversions to mock its virtue and
morality.
Wilde creates comedy through the presentation of Victorian views on the functionality of marriage,
ridiculing it as a social tool. The fact that Victorian society does not value the love and romance of
marriage is witnessed from the exposition, where Algernon s mockery of social constraints is shown
through his statements of is marriage so demoralizing as that? and I really don t see anything romantic
in proposing. This cynical view creates vast amounts of disorder as Algernon s desire to escape his
responsibilities clearly overrides his desire to settle down. This is illustrated through his view that the
very essence of romance is uncertainty and therefore, perhaps, Victorian ideals, which dictate marriage
to be a conventional source of gain, are not suited towards his anti realist nature. Within his refusal to
follow social conventions of the Victorian era, whereby courtship is typically functional rather than
romantic, Wilde mocks the superficial tendencies of marriage as a social tool, as is displayed through
the proposal that marriage is demoralizing. This not only conveys the concept of futility in marriage
and loss of hope for a future that is not

He used more than one frame. He used an outcome frame when stating his preferences, and a

accounts.
What do you project the outcome of the first exchange to be?
Because resources are fixed and limited, both used distributive bargaining strategies and tactics. Both
appear to be competing with each other. I project a win lose for Len. Marilyn tried to get Len to
reduce his resistance point by reminding him that they had made an agreement, and that she was
expecting him to commit to it. Her strategy was shortsighted because she didn t anticipate the frame
they would be using, or the frame Len would be using. Len elected to reframe his position on the basis
of power, using Joe as leverage, which was done intentionally, since Marilyn s challenges seemed to
fuel his creativity.
Part C: Were Marilyn s objectives achieved in the second exchange?
Yes. Marilyn used an active engagement strategy that persuaded Len to reveal his target and resistance
points. She got Len to see that their goals are not mutually exclusive, and that they need to work on a
transfer schedule that results in a win win. She used key steps in the integrative negotiation process to
shift the tone and focus of the exchange. She defined the problem, stated it as a goal, and avoided
stating solutions that favored her side only, until they could meet with Joe to examine alternative

Joe Studwell s How Asia Works
In How Asia Works Success and Failure in the World s Most Dynamic Region, Joe Studwell explores
the East Asian developmental successes of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China by challenging the
prominent theory of developmental economics. He uses the same theory to examine the lagging
behind of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Studwell evaluates the performance of
these economies by a recipe he has concocted in which he explains as, an historical review of east
Asian economic development shows that the recipe for success has been as simple as one, two, three:
household farming, export oriented manufacturing, and closely controlled finance that supports these
two sectors (Studwell 267). The first stage requires land reforms ... Show more content on

The successes are named as South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Malaysia and Thailand are considered to
be moderately performing, but lagging behind. Finally, he classifies the Philippines and Indonesia as
failures. The final section of the book is solely dedicated to China as it presents a unique case. China
has developmental characteristics that are similar to both the successful countries of Northeast Asia as
well as the poorer Southeastern Asian countries. China has made great progresses and overcome great
disasters. It has worked closely alongside the World Bank and even receives technical support from it
when needed. But not without paranoia, which has actually caused China to prosper. Unlike the
northeastern countries, Chinese peasants do not own their own land as it is collectively owned and is
not allowed to be sold under law. In modern times, China s developmental plan is based off of
recognizing the past failures associated with state led growth, while allowing state companies to play
an important role in its economy. Also, foreign owned companies play a large role because other
countries outsource their labor needs to China because it is much cheaper. Overall, Studwell states that
China s government has set the stage for the enablement of rapid economic development. The author

Medical Application For Medical Residency Program
Throughout all of time there have been people known as doctors. In some places they have been
known as shaman, witch doctor, healing man, or even cleric. The way they were trained was usually
through apprenticeship with an older doctor when they were young. As the times and practices
advanced and changed so did the learning of medicine. People went from apprenticeships to schools.
Then the schools became more extensive and thorough. Now because of there being several different
branches of medicine there are also several branches of schooling. And in order to become a doctor,
surgeon, or a radiologist a person must go through the Medical Residency Program, otherwise known
as the Match Program. Depending on which type of medicine a person wants to go in they have to
choose a type of medical residency program, an example would be that if a person would want to
work as a doctor they would have to go through the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Each
residency program was created at different times. The reason for this fact is that some of these
programs weren t need until a certain point because of changes in time, culture, people, and
necessities. Point in case being the Emergency Medical Residency Program which was not created
until 1961. This can be backed by what Brian J. Zink s writing at http://www.emra.org/resources/emra

Analysis Of Jackson s The Lottery
Analysis of Jackson s The Lottery
In the story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, we see the different literary elements she uses to unfold
her story. Literary elements help readers to interpret and appreciate the works of a writer. In this Essay
I will show you the three most prominent literary elements that were used, and how they add to the
suspense, and surprise of the story. These literary elements are point of view, theme, and tone and
style.
The first literary element of this story is the point of view, and how the writer uses a third person
narrative style to tell this story. This gives the writer the ability to give details, but not make any real
judgments. When you read the story you feel as if you are there watching what is happening, looking
over the shoulders of the crowd, but not able to know what the people are thinking. In this story we
get an example of how the writer is detached in a way. We don t get to know what the characters are
feeling just what their actions are telling us, like when they choose to whisper instead of talking at
normal volume, or how nervous they seem as the lottery progresses. This writing style leaves little if
any room to get attached to a character. This however is a smart move by Jackson, because if the story
was told from a villager s point of view it could have been far less effective. When we read we just
read about the events of the lottery unfolding. This narrative point of view adds to the shock factor
when we find out

I. Introduction In 1968 Richard M. Nixon a 55 year old former vice president who lost the presidency
for the Republicans in 1960 reclaimed himself by defeating Hubert Humphrey in one of the closest
elections in United States history. On July 23, 1970 Nixon approves for a plan for greatly expanding
domestic intelligence gathering by the FBI, CIA, and other agencies. He later has second thoughts
though. A few days later he resends his approval. On September 9th 1971 the Whitehouse plumber
unit named for the orders to plug leeks in the administration steals files on Daniel Ellsberg, the former
defense analyst who leaked the pentagon papers from a local physiology office. On the evening of
August 8th 1974 President Richard Nixon gave his last speech ever as the face of the United States.
His resignation changed the ideas of political trust in the country. The Watergate scandal destroyed the
reputations and revised the rule of law and politics.

The term has been written by Simon Northridge. what is bycatch? It is the unfortunate event of marine
mammals getting caught and killed during fishing.most of the time, these mammals deaths were
completely unintentional by the fishermen but it regularly happens during fishing operations. Bycatch
is therefore incidental catches. No matter the fishing gear, they have all catched at least once,
unwanted marine mammals especially in greatly fished areas. Species like whales, porpoises and
others find their way into these gears but are unable to get out of them. A staggering 300, 000 marine
mammals are killed through bycatch. For many years, and to this day, bycatches of marine mammals

as in the 1950 s, it only started getting monitored in the 1970 s. for the many years when it was

dolphins are continuously being killed through this fishing technique. Thanks to dolphin safe labels
and movement, there has been great improvement on this practice. This improvement has led to a
reduction of dolphin mortalities to less than 1500 per year in 2004. Unfortunately, even with this
progress, dolphins and the other marine mammals affected are struggling to repopulate because of
how affected the species were from all the previous years but also since large scale captures are still
going on.
The discovery of the effect of the ETP tuna fishery on dolphins has opened the door to a realization
that other fisheries are killing several other marine mammals. The baji Lipotes vexillifer is now
declared extinct as well as the vaquita Phocoena sinus. The Baji is a Chinese river dolphin and its
extinction is caused by fishing lines; it is a long line of sharp hooks used for other fish but since it is

Rate Law Lab Report
Discussion Since the rate law was determined to be first order, as seen in equation 2, the rate of
reaction, the rate at which the concentrations of the reactants decrease, was linear. Which means the
reaction depends linearly on only the concentration of bleach. This experimental rate law was the
same as the literature rate law for the bleaching reaction between green dye and cetylpyridinum
chloride, with first order dependence on the bleaching compound cetylpyridinum chloride. Even if the
literature reaction was not parallel to the one studied in this report, it still served as an adequate model
reaction for comparison.3 Therefore, the experimental rate law processes some degree of accuracy.

John Stuart Mill
Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness; wrong as they tend to produce the
reverse of happiness. By happiness is intended pleasure and the absence of pain. J.S.M
John Stuart Mill, the eldest son of Benthamite economist James Mill, was held to rigorous educational
standards. At age three he learned Greek and then Latin at age eight. Growing up, Mill was extremely
intelligent but also very emotionally depressed. He had nervous breakdown that then forced him to
rethink what he had been taught and had been teaching, and often said that poetry was the way out of
his depression. Mill was a strong believer in freedom, especially that of speech and of thought. He
spent most of his life at East India Company, from 1826 to the year 1857 for which he had the same
position his father held the chief examiner, which put him in charge of guiding company policies in
India. In his 20s, Mill felt the influence of historicism, social thoughts of the French nature, and
Romanticism; as well as urbanization and industrialization. This led him to look for a new philosophy
that wouldn t be so harsh on the limits that shaped society by imposing on its culture and history, but
instead would emphasize humanity s cultivation. After his retirement and the death of his wife, he was
elected into a seat in Parliament and took part in three momentous occasions. The first generated

Many Cycles Differ Slightly From Year To Year, Decade To
Many cycles differ slightly from year to year, decade to decade; for example, the climate, economies,

repetition with a difference recurs throughout Gabriel García Márquez s magical realist novel One

Colonel Aureliano Buendía s workshop. His infancy spent in the workshop shapes his future obsession

  • 2. Compare And Contrast The American Empire And Ottoman Empire Throughout history there has been times when empire building and expansion were very popular. During the Early Modern Era, from 1450 1750, this occurred a lot. The European, Russian, Chinese, Mughal and, Ottoman empires were all being built around the same time. An empire is a group of states or countries under one supreme ruler. When the empire is divided by an ocean or has part of it distant from the other, the part away from the mainland is known as a colony and the homeland is the Mother Country. Since the Native Americans were never exposed to them, they never built immunities. When the Europeans came to the Americans they carried the diseases without knowing. Making majority of the population sick. Tribe after tribe they died because they could not fight these diseases. This clearly made more room for the Europeans but in a tragic way. Similarly, the European Empires were different from the Russian, Chinese, Mughal, and Ottoman Empires in their reasonings for expansion. Europe expanded across the Atlantic Ocean because they were geographically at an advantage. They had access to this new land the for the other places to get to it would either take too long or they would physically have to go through the European s land to get there. • 7. Compare And Contrast Still Life And Still Life Each artist creates artwork using their own distinct style and creativity. When comparing artwork between different artists, it is evident that certain visual elements and principles of design resonate more with some artists than they do with others. Even though artwork tends to be original, often times it is easy to find similarities when comparing artwork. When comparing Still Life by Giorgio Morandi to Classic Landscape by Charles Sheeler, it is apparent that there are many similarities and differences in the visual elements and principles of design used by the artists when creating these works of art. One visual element that is used in both of these paintings is the use of lines. Both paintings use lines, more specifically contour lines, to create boundaries and add definition to the objects in the painting. By using contour lines, we are able to clearly see the shape of the pottery in Still Life and we are able to make out the unique shapes in the railroad tracks and in the sky in Classic Landscape. Clearly both artists believed that using contour lines would add to the appearance of the painting which is why both included this visual element in their artwork. While both artists used contour lines to enhance the appearance of their paintings, the direction of the lines used by the artists is very different and helps provide a unique feel for the painting that each artist created. Still Life by Giorgio Morandi uses a lot of curved lines that provide a calm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

William Shakespeare s Hamlet also contains a character that is in search of the truth, which ultimately leads to his own demise, as well as the demise of many around him. He proceeds on this mission and chooses to ignore the warnings of Creon, Iocaste, Teiresias, the messenger, the shepherd, and anyone who attempts to stand between him and the truth; and, he chooses to blind himself. In the end, Oedipus most foolish choice prevails throughout the play; the choice of illusion over reality ultimately costs him his life. Similar to the quest for truth in Oedipus case, so does Hamlet lead to his own decease. In the first act of William Shakespeare s Hamlet, after Hamlet is aware of the tormented ghost of his father walking on the ramparts, he goes to witness it for himself. This immediately exemplifies the theory that Hamlet, like Oedipus, is in search of the truth, until he realizes it is too much to bear. Subsequent to seeing the apparition, he is convinced to avenge his father s murderer. The ghost tells him, Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder, (29). The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde Wilde s The Importance Of Being Earnest explores various themes of love and marriage, especially in Act 1, where marriage in Victorian society is widely contradicted as a very pleasant state, instead using various comedic devises, such as puns, double entendres and inversions to mock its virtue and morality. Wilde creates comedy through the presentation of Victorian views on the functionality of marriage, ridiculing it as a social tool. The fact that Victorian society does not value the love and romance of marriage is witnessed from the exposition, where Algernon s mockery of social constraints is shown through his statements of is marriage so demoralizing as that? and I really don t see anything romantic in proposing. This cynical view creates vast amounts of disorder as Algernon s desire to escape his responsibilities clearly overrides his desire to settle down. This is illustrated through his view that the very essence of romance is uncertainty and therefore, perhaps, Victorian ideals, which dictate marriage to be a conventional source of gain, are not suited towards his anti realist nature. Within his refusal to follow social conventions of the Victorian era, whereby courtship is typically functional rather than romantic, Wilde mocks the superficial tendencies of marriage as a social tool, as is displayed through the proposal that marriage is demoralizing. This not only conveys the concept of futility in marriage and loss of hope for a future that is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Literary elements help readers to interpret and appreciate the works of a writer. In this Essay I will show you the three most prominent literary elements that were used, and how they add to the suspense, and surprise of the story. These literary elements are point of view, theme, and tone and style. The first literary element of this story is the point of view, and how the writer uses a third person narrative style to tell this story. This gives the writer the ability to give details, but not make any real judgments. When you read the story you feel as if you are there watching what is happening, looking over the shoulders of the crowd, but not able to know what the people are thinking. In this story we get an example of how the writer is detached in a way. We don t get to know what the characters are feeling just what their actions are telling us, like when they choose to whisper instead of talking at normal volume, or how nervous they seem as the lottery progresses. This writing style leaves little if any room to get attached to a character. By happiness is intended pleasure and the absence of pain. J.S.M John Stuart Mill, the eldest son of Benthamite economist James Mill, was held to rigorous educational standards. At age three he learned Greek and then Latin at age eight. Growing up, Mill was extremely intelligent but also very emotionally depressed. He had nervous breakdown that then forced him to rethink what he had been taught and had been teaching, and often said that poetry was the way out of his depression. Mill was a strong believer in freedom, especially that of speech and of thought. He spent most of his life at East India Company, from 1826 to the year 1857 for which he had the same position his father held the chief examiner, which put him in charge of guiding company policies in India. In his 20s, Mill felt the influence of historicism, social thoughts of the French nature, and Romanticism; as well as urbanization and industrialization. This led him to look for a new philosophy that wouldn t be so harsh on the limits that shaped society by imposing on its culture and history, but instead would emphasize humanity s cultivation. His infancy spent in the workshop shapes his future obsession of studying Melquíades parchments, as he likely associates the workshop with safety and comfort, and naturally absorbs himself into every aspect of the room. This suggests that, without an adequate amount of human interaction, one is largely shaped by their surroundings during infancy, leading to a more analytical or observant nature that arises in place of observing human interactions and developing connections with others.
