Alexander III Research Paper
Following his father s assassination, Alexander III was advised that it would be difficult for him to be
kept safe at the Winter Palace. As a result, Alexander relocated his family to the Gatchina Palace,
located twenty miles south of St. Petersburg, making it his primary residence. Under heavy guard he
would make occasional visits into St. Petersburg, but even then he would stay in the Anichkov Palace,
as opposed to the Winter Palace. In the 1860s Alexander fell madly in love with his mother s lady in
waiting, Princess Maria Elimovna Meshcherskaya. Dismayed to learn that Prince Wittgenstein had
proposed to her in spring 1866, he told his parents that he was prepared to give up his rights of
succession in order to marry his beloved Dusenka . On 19 May 1866, Alexander II informed his son
that Russia had come to an agreement with the parents of Princess Dagmar of Denmark, his fourth
cousin. Before then, she had been the fiancée of his late elder brother Nicholas. At first Alexander
refused to travel to Copenhagen, declaring that he did not love Dagmar and his desire to marry Maria.
In response the enraged emperor ordered Alexander to go straight to Denmark and propose to Princess
Dagmar. The Tsesarevich then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This tension was reflected in the rivalry between Maria Feodorovna and Vladimir s wife, Grand
Duchess Marie Pavlovna.[9] Alexander had better relationships with his other brothers: Alexei (whom
he made rear admiral and then a grand admiral of the Russian Navy), Sergei (whom he made governor
of Moscow) and Paul. Despite the antipathy that Alexander had towards his stepmother, Princess
Catherine Dolgorukov, he nevertheless allowed her to remain in the Winter Palace for some time after
his father s assassination and to retain various keepsakes of him. These included Alexander II s blood
soaked uniform that he died wearing, and his reading

Sociology Courses On The Classroom
Certainly having other sociology courses prior to this class helped my learning the most. However, the
reading assignments due before each class oriented me throughout the topic and allowed me to
understand the lecture. It provided me with a sneak peak of the upcoming topic to be discussed in
class. Thus, gave me time to think of comments with which I could participate. It also taught me to
watch out for facts and details about a topic. Aside from allowing me to understand better the lecture, I
enjoyed doing the assignments because it provided me with facts to back up material being taught in
class. Additionally, it allowed me to apply the content of the class to outside sources. Thus, it
enhanced my understanding because concepts were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although coming up with solution to those problems are challenging, at least I learned how to address
them. Since I understand the causes and consequences of social problems, I am now comfortable to
discuss my points of view with another individual in an educated discussion. Furthermore,
understanding the causes and consequences has also allowed me to understand that not everybody has
the same points of view. We can all go through the same situation, but we all experience it differently,
and precisely that experience is what shapes our perceptions of things. Thus, my empathy increased
greatly, because when my perception gets challenged, I understand the the other person has
experienced a situation differently than mine. Likewise, the topic discussed in class challenged the
stereotypes I had of situations or even other people. For example, I stereotyped the poor as lazy or as
people who did not tried to get out of poverty. However, after material discussed in class I mainly
understood that being poor was not even their choice; several inherit being poor from their parents. I
understood that it is not in their power to change their economic situation, but it relies on the
institutions that do not allow them to earn better wages, or do not allow them to have the same
opportunities as others. My stereotypes were challenged with every social problem discussed in class.
I think that s what I enjoyed the

Laptop prices hit new low
Summary:
The article Laptop prices hit new lows by Gary McWilliams focuses on the computer industry, and
how prices have evolved during past 5 years, specifically 2001 2005. The article reports that the prices
of laptop computers have decrease substantially over the past 5 years.
The average price for a laptop hit a new low in 2005 of about $1000; a decrease of about $250 from
last year, and more than $600 from year 2001. In the past the demand for laptop computers comprised
only of businesspeople. Now, college students demand represents a considerable percentage of the
total demand for laptop computers. While in the past a laptop computer was considered a luxury,

With a larger scale of production companies are applying better organizational skills to its resources,
such as straightforward chain of command, and by this the range where the marginal product is
positive would be greatly increased. Similar to improved organization and technique, the learning
processes related to production, selling and distribution result in increased efficiency.
In industries that are capital and research intensive such as the computer industry, efficiency requires
large if not very large scale operation. For such industries, the main source of scale economies is new
product development costs or new, cheaper ways of production costs; spreading those huge costs over
an increased number of units result in increased efficiency and in the end lower costs for end
users/consumers.
AMD and Intel both face tremendous economies of scale. The cost of building the first chip of a new
design may in the billions of dollars, if one includes the cost of building the manufacturing facility,
and the research and development costs. However, the more chips that are produced of a given design,
the lower the average cost.
Another reason for the significantly drop in price can be the adoption of the demand driven or built to
order production system. The direct

Every Situation, By Patsy Rodenburg
In the book, The Second Circle: How to Use Positive Energy or Success in Every Situation by Patsy
Rodenburg, the author really focuses on how people can change their life by using your energy in a
more positive way. She discusses three circles of energy that everyone has experienced at some point
but one out of the three circles is the one we tend to fall in the most. The second circle is where
everyone should try to be in life while people who fall into the second and third circles will tend to not
have as positive of a life as they will never live with a presence. Throughout the book she explains
how something as simple as breathing can help us use more positive energy and keep us in the second
circle while also giving very detailed

Paul Laurence Dunbar s We Wear the Mask and His Facade...
Paul Laurence Dunbar s poem We Wear The Mask is about his views on
racism and the struggle for equality for the African Americans. What is so
beautifully unique is how he wrote it in an artful, refined dissimulation of his true
self. He is deliberately misleading and often indirect as if to hide beneath his
words, coming across as oblique and delicate at the same time. This further
stresses the idea of the mask, being concealing and elusive, in many ways.
This particular piece of work is unequaled, not only to the literary world,
but the author himself. Paul Laurence Dunbar s other poems are written in a
specific dialect, brought on by his African American descent. One example comes from

veil to shield the emotions of bearer of the mask and personal denial of specific
emotions whether they are guilt, sorrow, or anger. Emotions are tightly capped
when the mask hides our cheeks and shades our eyes where you cannot tell if
he is crying or smiling.
The debt we pay to human guile is reference to the slavery and struggle
of the African Americans. Human guile is the trickery, cunning, and deceit of
those who enslaved them. Dunbar doesn t actually mean that they are in debt
but it was sarcasm and irony to the fact that they have paid their lives to people
who had no interest in the well being of the African Americans, only in the
leisure of their own. It is clear the wounds afflicted during the ever lasting conflict
were deep but Dunbar states with torn and bleeding hearts we smile because
while the struggle was hard, he knows somehow that it will come to and end and
his people would flourish. More importantly, the mouth of which they smile with is
laced with myriad subtleties , countless misleading crafty features that leads you
to understand the facade, knowing there is hurtful doubt behind it.
Paul Dunbar then continues to question the world and it s eagerness to be
over wise , to recount the African American s miseries one after another. While

Examples Of Confirmation Bias In Prison
Frontline: Prisoners of Silence
1.) Confirmation Bias is when someone has high hopes for something to turn out the way they want,
that, in their mind, it comes true (Google, 2017). One example would be playing with an Ouija board.
2.) Parents whose children were/are autistic wanted so badly for the process to work that they believed
it. Even the researchers believed FC worked because in their mind they wanted it to work.
Confirmation bias even played a role in hurting families by accusing parents of sexual assault towards
their children (Frontline, 1993).
3.) Issues in Facilitated Communication were that these children were forming complete sentences and
writing poetry to the point that a ten year old was writing at a higher grade

Donald Trump s Arguments Against Immigration In The United...
For our new president, Donald trump it has already been a rough start in office and its only been a
couple of weeks. There is not a lot of people that approve of how he s handling is job already. The
biggest action citizens disapprove of is the travel restrictions and most people say it is an attempt to
ban Muslims from entering the US. Another action that is highly disapproved is The Wall which will
be between the US and Mexico. The citizens of the US are very divided on whether this will make the
US a safer place and protects us from terrorism. Most voters think President Trump s executive order
on immigration is better described as a restriction on terrorist than as a Muslim ban. This level of

But I do understand that public opinion polls play an important role in politics. They are used
throughout the course of election campaigns by candidates and by the media to see which candidates
are ahead and who is likely to emerge victorious. The results of these polls, in turn, largely determine
where future campaign monies are to be spent and where each candidate s efforts will be concentrated
until the close of the campaign. My political opinion is influenced by public opinion because, knowing
the role of the candidates and how they act is a huge part when it comes to voting on election day.
Seeing how they act through media can change your opinion on how you see the person who s running
for presidency. Also, you can keep up with everything and see who s winning the race. This also

Planned Market And Mixed Market Economies
Planned, Market, and Mixed Economies
Each country has its own economic system, a system for allocating its resources among its citizens,
both individual and organizations (Ebert Griffin, 2015, p. 11). There are three economic systems:
planned economies, market economies, and mixed market economies. Economic systems are defined
by how the five factors of productions are handled: labor, capital, entrepreneurs, physical resources,
and information resources. Factors of production are the resources that a country s businesses use to
produce goods and services (Ebert Griffin, 2015, p. 11).
Planned Economies
A planned economy can be defined as an economy that relies on a centralized government to control
all or most factors of production and to make all or most production and allocation decisions (Ebert
Griffin, 2015, p. 12). There are two forms of planned economies: communism, in which the
government owns and operates all factors of productions, and socialism, where the government owns
and operates only selected factors of productions. China and North Korea are both examples of current
communist countries; Denmark and Sweden are both examples of current socialist countries.
Planned Economies and Labor Factor of Production
People who work for businesses provide labor. Labor, sometimes called human resources, includes the
physical and intellectual contributions people make while engaging in economic productions (Ebert
Griffin, 2015, p. 11). In a communist planned

The Importance Of The Human Genome Project
Building off of the work conducted by the Human Genome Project to sequence the entire human
genome, the ENCODE Project seeks to delineate the function of the elements identified within the
project. Through the collaboration of many different institutions, scientists, and laboratories, the
ENCODE Project has been able to identify and assign functions to numerous, including previously
unstudied, elements within the genome and further genome wide understanding beyond just that of
protein coding sequences. Utilizing different biological assays, scientists systematically mapped areas
of transcription, chromatin structure, histone modification, and transcription factor association
(ENCODE Project Consortium 2012). ENCODE focused on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, it also illuminated the gaps in understanding that still exist, such as organizational and
mechanistic features. The large amount of data covering numerous cell types from the ENCODE
Project creates a resource to be used in the studies of genetic disorders and illnesses and provide
testable hypotheses for experimental analysis. ENCODE focused on a limited number of cell types
and factors. Future studies could further understanding of the genome and potentially fill in the gaps
by expanding the number of cell types and factors examined (ENCODE Project Consortium 2012).
Discussion
The ENCODE Project seeks to determine the functionality of the elements of the human genome.
ENCODE has their own definition of functionality, which includes any discrete genome segment that
encodes a defined product or displays a reproducible biochemical signature. With the rapidly
degrading definition of the gene in recent years due to insights from projects like ENCODE and the
discovery of pervasive genomic transcription, the ENCODE definition of functionality could be the
key to determining the new definition of a gene. Historically, a gene indicated a piece of DNA which
ultimately had a protein product,

Protein Analysis
Proteins are an essential component of the human body tissues. They are made by combining amino
acids together. There are many pros as well as cons to consuming inadequate amounts of protein each
day. Making sure to consume the accurate type and amount of protein is important for the body. There
are specific groups that do require more protein, however, if you are not a part of one of these groups
consuming too much protein can have harmful effects. Proteins are made when amino acids combine
to each other. There are 20 different amino acids; 9 are essential amino acids and 11 are non essential
amino acids. The body is unable to produce essential amino acids on its own. The body must obtain
the 9 essential amino acids through the consumption ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These groups include children, athletes, vegetarians, adolescents, and pregnant woman. Since proteins
help with the growth of tissue in the body as well as hormones and enzymes it is important for
vegetarians as well as vegans to make sure they are consuming adequate amounts of protein. Animal
products contain the majority of sources for amino acids where many plant products are missing those
sources that our bodies need. Dr. Hubbard explains in the article Are You Getting Enough Protein
published by Tufts University how animal products can provide the complete proteins but it is possible
to get them in other ways such as peanut butter, beans, rice, and bread. Dr. Hubbard states: Despite
what you may have heard, these combinations don t have to be eaten at one meal it s a balance over a
whole day that s most important ( Are You Getting Enough Protein, 2012). Another group that needs
to ensure that they have enough protein in their diet is athletes. According to a journal titled Protein
food and amino acid supplements in athletes diet, the amount of protein required over the daily
recommended amount depends on the athlete as well as the sport. All athletes can benefit when an
extra supply of protein is consumed immediately following a workout in order to help increase muscle
mass and strength endurance. Protein consumption also helps athletes with recovery time and
enhances their performance both in exercise and in a

Attraction In Cross-Sex Relationships Essay
Can you be friends with someone you like? The dynamic of cross sex friendships is an interesting area
of study and one of which has little data. Moreover, research on this narrow subject is rather limited
and comes from fairly old studies. The idea that men and women cannot be just friends, is due to the
idea that there must be some aspect of physical and or romantic involved. As Reeder discussed
traditional societal norms and expectations of male female relationships have played a role in how we
view cross sex friendships today. The literature on cross sex friendships has explored the role of
attraction and the impact it has on the dynamics of cross sex relationships. This literature review will
investigate the role of attraction on cross sex relationships and whether attraction hinders being friends
with someone you like. Further, exploring the various common themes among the literature on
attraction in cross sex friendships: the definition of attraction is subjective and there are different types
of attraction, attraction tends to confuse the definition of the relationship, men perceive attraction
more than women and lastly, attraction indeed is a challenge but not necessarily detrimental. It is
hypothesized that attraction creates a significant challenge for those involved in a cross sex
relationship. Therefore, once attraction becomes an issue in the relationship, the possibility of the
relationship lasting is questionable. The following five studies support the

The Bible states in Deuteronomy 17: 18 19, Now it shall come about when he sit on the throne of his

stipulations with these laws. Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) did shed some insight
on the laws and how they can be interpreted. This paper will discuss the criminal statute issues, issues

Satire In Humorous Acting
Rebecca is having a long day at the office. All she wants to do is go home and watch the latest episode

forms of humorous acting give people something to look forward to. It has provided an escape venue

more to it than meets the eye. The definition of theatre is a form of art that is supposed to be

They are all vague and can be mixed around or put into the same show or play. Most comedies have
more than one of these tenets. The first tenet is farce. Farce puts characters in an absurd situation that
then makes the play funny. Most farce stems from Shakespeare, and it is the best documented comedy
form. Irony is a verbal tenet. When a play is ironic, sarcastic comments and retorts or common, and
the opposite of what is true is believed to be true. Irony often gets bad reviews and is considered
satire. Satire is a cross between irony and parody. It is defined as imitation with the intention of
wounding or correcting someone. It s the harshest type. Parody is similar to satire but the intentions
are not as severe. Parody is the most famous tenet. Pastiche is subtler but also similar to parody. The
purpose of the imitation is often to flatter. Pastiche is relatively benign, and lots of humorous musicals
incorporate it. Surrealism is when the actor presents a situation that isn t relevant to the perceived plot
and is therefore entertaining. Slapstick involves characters doing physically funny things like falling
down or hurting themselves in general. Slapstick is the most visual tenet of comedy. The lines of the

making involves making a selection from among alternative courses of action. Implementation and
evaluation of the implementation provide feedback into the next cycle of group decision making.

Strategies for capturing and sharing insights and experiences include:
Best practice transfer: is the process of sharing the methods of doing business that yield the best
results.
Community of practice: a group of individuals sharing a common work practice over a period.
Expert directories: a tool for knowledge seekers to gain access to experts.
Knowledge brokers: knowledge brokers can be public or scientific, industry specific, or firm specific.
Mentoring: is the process of a more experienced person advising and guiding a less experienced (and
usually younger) person, typically a colleague.
Post project reviews: or lesson learned debriefings occur either at the completion of a project or
activity or at strategic points or milestones during the project.
Story telling: uses anecdotal examples to illustrate a point and transfer knowledge.
A key strategy for knowledge management is actively managing knowledge, also known as a push
strategy. Employees enter their knowledge into shared knowledge repository, such as a database.
Employees seeking knowledge can search the database.
The opposite strategy, a pull strategy, is the use of experts on an ad hoc basis. The expert provides

Phychoanalysis In Delacroix s Liberty Leading The People
While feminism and Marxism work well in hybrid approaches to Delacroix s Liberty Leading the
People, the same cannot be said for every methodology. This is especially true in regards to
psychoanalysis. It is difficult to apply this approach to an older artist like Delacroix. The methodology
is so recent and grounded in being able to converse with the artist. In the case of Delacroix, scholars
base their psychoanalytic findings on the artist s writings, both letters and journals. While this can be
useful in some cases, such as Wilkin s use of it to determine Delacroix s opinions on other artists, it is
not when trying to determine Delacroix thoughts on himself and his own art. This means the
scholarship is based on Delacroix s self fashioning. While one can speculate on the subconscious
motivations behind his writings, they simply do not add any depth to our understanding of Liberty
Leading the People. Scholars try to link psychoanalysis with biography to ground their findings, but
this only makes the biography method appear faulty and compromises readers willingness to accept
fact. Thus, psychoanalysis does not add anything substantial to the study of Delacroix s painting and
should not be used in conjunction with the hybridization of biography, formalism, or social history. An
example of a scholar trying to utilize psychoanalysis Jack J. Spector s article Delacroix s Liberty on
the Barricades in 1815 and 1830 from 1996. In this study, Spector unsuccessful tries to

Facilities Management in the Service Industry
This essay revolves around the critical evaluation of theories relating to management of
accommodations and facilities that can be utilised to help hotels design efficient and effective
processes. The key concepts such as process, efficiency, and effectiveness will be discussed while
justifying the methods of process analysis or design which will be highlighted in this essay. All these
topics will be critically evaluated in order to incorporate the operations management concepts of
quality, in the application of accommodation and facilities to add value and deliver efficient and

Hence, service quality should be seen as an on going process (Pallet et al, 2003) and the above QFD
model helps incorporate guests view and take into account the heterogeneity and complexity of the
hospitality experience which was not evident in the previously built models.
At the operations management (OM) level, an output based model of seven key result areas (KRAs)
for the management of the service delivery system can be used as the analytical framework, derived
from Lockwood and Jones (1990) cited in Slack et al (2007). The managed KRAs are assets,
employees, capacity (or customers), productivity, service, income (or control), and quality. Within
each area of this model there are a range of alternative operational policies and procedures that might
be adopted to reflect the type of hospitality business, its size, and its technology. For instance, yield
management is an approach to managing capacity in hotels, especially large, chain properties (Jarvis et
al., 1998); quality control is applied largely in quick service restaurants, whereas total quality
management (TQM) has been applied to a few hotels, such as Ritz Carlton.
Quality is not an absolute term. A product can be of high or low standard, yet still be of quality. For
e.g. a small barely furnished guest room, with shared bathroom facilities is a quality product if it is
perceived by the customers as fulfilling their needs for clean and comfortable overnight
accommodation. However, such a

The Current State Of The Health Care Industry
The current state of the health care industry is currently the talk of the United States. The health care
industry is currently the biggest moneymaker of the United States of today. They spend more on
healthcare than any other developed nation. Health care is something that everyone needs in this world
today. Many issues are faced because of the cost of health care. Currently some people consider our
American health care system a failure. More than 16% of Americans are currently without health
insurance. There are many people who believe that the modern medical industry is a success based on
the competition and consumer choice. Currently, almost thirty countries have single payer universal
health care systems. In 2009 President Obama, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The insured is the owner of the health insurance policy, and they are also the person with the health
insurance coverage. There are pros and cons when it comes to having health insurance. You have two
different types of people in the world; people who get sick often or have some type of medical
problem that causes them to have to go to the doctor more often than they would like, and ones who
rarely get sick and rarely have to go to the doctor. You will often find the people who fall in that
category rarely gets sick and finds it a waste of money to pay for health insurance. Some people think
that paying $400 a month for insurance is a waste of money especially when you only go to the doctor
maybe once a year. You are looking at coming out of $4800 for an insurance plan, but if you just paid
out of pocket when you go to the doctor you are looking at maybe spending around $200. So to this
group of people health insurance is considered a con. If you look at someone who gets sick more
often, they are going to look at health insurance as a pro because they do not have to pay as much
when they go to the doctor, especially since they go so frequently. For the people who are able to
afford to pay to for insurance they are able to go to nice clean hospitals to receive their care. For
individuals who are not able to afford to pay the high insurance premiums, they are limited to county

HOSA Personal Statement
Everyone has a dream or something they want to follow in life. Some want material gain while others
want to help as many people as they can. I m not saying wanting material gain is a bad thing, but what
I am saying is that for me, money is not the number one concern when my dream is to help others. My
hunger to help others only grows by the day. Because of what s going on in the world we live in today,
I believe that it is important that those who are less fortunate than others have the assistance they need
to get to an even playing field, health wise, with others.
Throughout my life, I always enjoyed to help everyone. When I was little, I actually loved being the
teacher s pet. My naive child mind thought I was the bomb by helping my teachers. I probably made
my poor teacher s life harder but my heart was in the right place. More times or not I was always

world. Technology, independence and social equality are some of the diverse concepts the United
States have adapted to and developed in order to become a more unified country. Our nation believes
that it is exceptional when it comes to other countries worldwide. As can be shown through the

But if we shall neglect...shall fall to embrace this present world and prosecute our carnal intentions,
seeking great things for ourselves and our posterity, the Lord will surely break out in wrath against us
(Winthrop, 20). This idea that the Christian deity is somehow connected to America s greatness can be
found in Conwell s work, albeit used in a different manner. Like Winthrop, Russell Conwell, author of
Acres of Diamonds, stresses how great America is with emphasis that it somehow ordained from a
higher power. However, Winthrop focuses maintaining this status through unselfish means while
Conwell uses this as a way to establish individual success. There never was a place on earth more
adapted than the city of Philadelphia to day, and never in the history of the world did a poor man
without capital have such an opportunity . . . Because to make money honestly is to preach the gospel
(Conwell, 179). His argument that Philadelphia is the greatest city on earth ties in with the concept of
American exceptionalism. The connection he makes with religion is contrasted to Winthrop since
Winthrop argues that America will lose its exceptionality if it does not avoid selfish actions. Conwell
argues that God is placing America in such a place that every person has the ability to acquire
individual wealth. Though Conwell focuses on the city of Philadelphia, his arguments can be applied
to a more general sense in America. His statement that

Summary Of On Going Home By Joan Didion
For the first time in 130 years, more young adults are living with parents until their mid thirties. Part
of this could be an emotional attachment keeping them from leaving home because after they leave,
everything will change. However, many are losing their real sense of home and are just using it as a
place where they can avoid paying bills and many other responsibilities. Many young adults now do
not understand the extensive sacrifice it is to leave their one and only home. In On Going Home, Joan
Didion expounds on her struggle to connect with her current house, in a nostalgic and resigned tone,
and vivid imagery, symbolism, and comparison Didion expresses the regret she feels every time she
remembers she left her home . The essay it s based on the time Didion visited her parents home to
celebrate her daughter s 1 year old birthday. Throughout the visit Didion couldn t help but feel
resentment to leave her home . Didion stated that she came to dread my husband s evening call
because she didn t want to go back to Los Angeles or even be reminded of it (2). Didion wishes she
could stay in her home where she is completely happy. We find her desperately looking around the
house for her past around every corner, inside every cupboard she aimlessly goes from room to room
looking for something she once lost and will never get back (2). Didion feels the need to reconnect
with her family and, although not stated, Didion longs to go back in time and prevent

Clifton Suspension Bridge Essay examples
Clifton Suspension Bridge
The Clifton Suspension Bridge is located in Bristol England, and spans the beautiful Avon gorge. This
bridge has become the symbol of Bristol much like the Eiffel tower has of Paris, and the Opera house
has of Sydney. The story of the Clifton Suspension Bridge began in 1754 with the dream of a Bristol
wine merchant who donated his life savings to build a bridge over the gorge. To decide on a suitable
design for the bridge a competition was held. Thomas Telford, the leading civil architect of the time
was the judge. Mr. Telford attempted to submit his own design; however the decision to declare
himself the winner was overruled and a second competition was held. This time, contrary to the
recommendation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also the original design was narrower than the final structure; the increased width has an interesting
story. Apparently a local land owner wished to drive his carriage to Bristol without having to walk or
negotiate the steep roads on the sides of the gorge, so he convinced the engineers, and paid for the
necessary modifications to widen the design of the bridge. It is fortunate that he insisted on this
widening because the bridge as it was originally designed would have never been able to cater to
modern traffic demands. The bridge was finished in 1859 and opened to the public in 1864.
Before the bridge was built the slip way was the only way to cross the river without taking a long
detour. The slip way was crossed at high tide by rowing a boat across, and at low tide by crossing on
series gangplanks that were tied together. Both crossings were fairly dangerous and extremely
inconvenient and therefore a bridge was a very popular idea.
The Clifton Suspension bridge is world famous and one of the essential things to see in the West
Country. It is a beautiful piece of engineering that is lovely maintained by the bridge staff. The two
towers of the bridge span from Clifton to summerset, the Clifton tower is build on a solid rock surface
that acts as a foundation, however the summerset tower needed a massive brick buttress before work
on the tower could begin. The towers though similar are not identical. The towers are similar in size,

The Severity Of Parkinson s Disease
Muhamad Ali, Michael J. Fox, and Linda Ronstadt are just a few celebrities that have been diagnosed
with a disease called Parkinson s. Most people have heard the name of this disease but do not exactly
know what it is. Although it is not well known, it is a very common neurodegenerative disease. Much
of the information about Parkinson s is not prominent, although the disease is the second most
common of its kind, next to Alzheimer s (Surguchov, 2013, p.116). The disease can be debilitating if
not treated properly. Because PD is such a real issue, efforts to research its cause and treatment have
been extensive and continue to be. Only one medication known to ease the suffering of its victims has

Symptom severity varies person to person and early signs sometimes go unnoticed. Usually the
symptoms will begin unilaterally and eventually progress to both sides, with the original side
remaining worse (Tagliati, 2007). People with PD also have a slumped posture with an abnormally
slow gait with shuffling feet. They also may suffer from an issue called freezing. Freezing causes the
person to be frozen in place involuntarily for a moment (National Parkinson s Foundation). Because
Parkinson s causes bradykinesia, or slowing in motion, everyday task take more energy and time to
complete. Tasks that seem simple to the healthy individual like getting out of bed is an
accomplishment to those suffering with this disease. Not only does Parkinson s take away your ability
to control your muscles, it also affects the control of your mind. These non motor symptoms cause
disabilities as well as lower the health related quality of life for patients who are affected (Chaudhuri,
2011). Developing neuropsychiatric and other non motor symptoms is not uncommon. Depression,
anxiety, reduced cognitive function, insomnia, fatigue, and autonomic disturbances have been found in
these patients (Poewe). Dementia is another major concern when dealing with Parkinson s patients.
The incidence of dementia occurring is close to eighty percent (Parkinson s, 2010). Risk factors for

Fine Arts Research Paper
~Arts Advocacy~ Many schools have started to remove Fine Arts programs from their curriculum,
usually for financial reasons. Fine Arts programs are vital because they provide a creative outlet for
students. Even though such classes have proven to show important benefits to students who take them,
when pay cuts have to be made, fine arts programs are the first to go. Art and music education help
students in different ways including, bettering the performance of students in other academics through
creativity, improving mental health, and teaching them skills needed in everyday life. For this reason,
teachers, parents, and students should fight to help these programs remain in schools. Students

This decision is detrimental to students involved in all activities, but is especially harmful for those
who are not involved in athletics or academics. These students are forced to accept the situation placed
upon them and continue in school as they did previously without the outlet that the art programs
provided. Most schools remove these programs due to financial constraints and decide that art
programs are impractical and choose them as the first program to cut. Students from Howard
University who had participated in fine arts while in school stated, I think that it is absolutely
outrageous that fine arts are the first to be cut in public schools. This says a lot about what is important
to education in America. Because math and science is what is being tested, tests that determine a
school s ranking is what is most important to the school, but the institutions ranking is not necessarily
what is in the best interest of the students as a whole person (Hawkins). Reasons for this decision
include the cost of the program. Participating in the arts often requires a large sum of money which is
used to acquire supplies that are essential in order to allow the students express themselves. Schools
have also chosen fine arts as the first to be cut because they do not accumulate as much revenue as
extracurricular activities may ( Why Schools are

Imagery In Farenheit 451
Imagery is describing an author s use of vivid description that evokes the reader to feel as if they can
visualize the scene. In the book, imagery is portrayed by the author to make people feel like they are
in the character s shoes, specifically where Samantha is drifting off to sleep in her mom s car. The in
depth description of Samantha dozing off to sleep looking out of the window is described in this
quote, I watch the highway lights, my eyelids sinking, then the summer streetlights as the roads get
smaller and smaller, closer to home (Fitzpatrick 283). In this quote, Samantha, the main character,

In the book, exaggeration is used by the author to create a dramatic or hilarious phrase to
communicate the emotions to the reader. When Tim was describing the size of the pool at the
community center, Tim said, There s a lake in the middle of this community center (Fitzpatrick 136).
In this quote, Tim can t believe how massive the new pool is in the community center, by creating a
humorous joke. From this, we can identify that Tim is surprised about the new pool and has a funny
sense of humor. This is an exaggeration because the reader knows that there s not a lake in the middle
of the community center but because Tim exaggerated the reader knows that the pool must be massive.
The author may have included this technique to develop the characters personalities further and to
help the reader understand the characters thoughts and emotions. (165

Corruption In Canterbury Tales
A medieval miller was a worker that would grind grain at the mill to produce flour and meal. In
Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, the Miller is a deceitful man that advances in her career
through deception and tells a fabliau, a comical fable told in verse that is characterized by sexual
obscenity. Fabliaux were generally told by jongleurs, or medieval entertainers. This particular fabliau
is a bawdy tale that discusses a scandalous affair. Through the Miller s description as a thieving and
scheming peasant and the Miller s raunchy tale, Chaucer criticizes the dangerous precedent of
corruption set by the nobility which consequently spreads to all classes due to esteem and success
amassed by corruption and the stereotype of the Third Estate or lower class as lewd and having a lack
of intelligence.
Chaucer s description of the Miller as deceitful and thieving through his appearance and actions
criticizes the upper class tendency to underestimate the ability of the lower class. The upper class is so
consumed with maintaining their image of affluence and looking down on the lower class, they fail to
recognize that peasants can learn to imitate their habits of corruption that lead to immense wealth. The
Miller is depicted as a well built, muscular man who wears a whit cote and a blew hood and has a red
beard as any sowe or fox that would steal from his customers by selling his grain for three times its
worth, yit he hadde a thombe of gold (554,565 566). The Miller

Ethical Issues With Animal Testing
More than 115 million animals are used each year for testing (Akhtar). The act of testing on live
animals for the purpose of scientific research is called vivisection. According to a nationwide survey
of biology educators commissioned by NAVS in 2014, the use of animals as dissection specimens in
biology classrooms remains a prevalent practice in the United States, with 84% of pre college biology
educators reporting the use of dissection as a teaching tool. The use of vivisection is carried out in
middle schools, high schools, and universities. Animals are also used in testing for cosmetics, tox
screenings, and xenotransplantation, a process of transplanting organs or tissues between different
species . Many creatures around the world are forced into a life in cage where they obliged to endure
painful tests. Along with the pain caused by scientists, many of the drugs that prove to be successful in
animals aren t in humans. Aside from all, animals do have the right to not be harmed although the
Animal Welfare Act doesn t provide much protection. Our country s law refuses to find it necessary to
use alternative methods which are also obtainable. Animal testing should be outlawed due to animal
rights, ethical issues, alternative ways and its unreliability.
First of all, testing on animals must be outlawed in order to protect the rights of animals. Their rights
are infringed by endless experimenting. We may not believe this but animals and humans are alike in
more than one way.

Death In Judaism
Not all regions where Jews live celebrate life and death in the same way. This is because Jews had to
assimilate to local cultures after they began to disperse to various parts of the world. This caused
traditions to be pushed aside all together or to be blended with local cultures (Parkes, page 99).
However, there are many core values that never faded and area consistently practiced in most parts of
the world. Death in Judaism is an important part of life. As described in Death and Bereavement
Across Cultures, Two of the most important commandments in Jewish tradition are to honor the dead
and comfort the mourner. (98) Respect for the dead is known as, kavod ha met and the comfort given

Olam ha ba or the world to come is the belief that the soul returns to God to wait to be reborn with the
coming of the Messiah. Death allows for Jewish people to value life and their short time spent on earth
(Parkes, 101). It is believed that beyond death, life does not include earthly pleasures such as eating
and drinking. After death life consists of being, in the glory of the Divine Presence. There is no hell
after death as a destination. Rather, happiness to those who lived a righteous life and suffering to those
who sinned and led others to sin. There is more of a reward versus punishment system instead of
destinations. The punishment given to those in life after death is not set in stone, it is described in the
Talmud as, vague and contradictory (Darmesteter, page 51 52). In many branches Christianity it is
believed one s soul goes to purgatory when they die and the decision is made weather your soul will
spend eternity in heaven or hell. Jewish tradition does not believe that souls end up in one of the two
destinations rather, all souls end up in the same place, it is just the journey that is different for different
individuals. When your body dies your soul leaves it and begins its journey to return to God, this
journey is considered a purification process so your soul is pure in the world to come. The purification
process for those who lived a fulfilling and righteous life may only take a day or so while those who
lived a life full of sin take a longer time on their journey to purification, taking up to a year. After this
purification process is complete Jewish tradition states that the soul is then waiting for the coming of
the Messiah when the soul will return to the physical body for final judgment (Parkes,

Wife Role In Japanese Family
The wife role is centered more around the children and the household. That she is the most informed
about what is best for her children and will explore all options for them. They do not usually let their
children go to a babysitter or daycare because they feel that they can nurture their children best. Also,
the mothers consider motherhood to be highly valued and is considered the most important thing. The
mother knows all that is going on with their child and has the ultimate authority in their education and
attends to all their academic needs. (Japanese Family) Japan has many traditions that are deep rooted
in their religions such as, Japanese Tea Ceremony, Noh drama, Kabuki Drama, as well as holidays like
Japanese New Year celebration, Coming of Age Day, Shunbun no hi/Higan no Chu Nichi as well as

Essay about William Morris
William Morris
William Morris, English poet, artist, socialist reformer, and innovator in the Arts and Crafts
Movement. He was born in Walthamstow, then a village, and moved to a grand residence there called
Water House at the age of 14 this has since become the William Morris Gallery. He studied at Oxford
with the intention of becoming a clergyman, but while there he met Edward Coley
Burne Jones, also studying for the church, and they both began to turn towards art. They were
persuaded by Rossetti to give up the studies and become artists. Morris did a year in architectural

Morris married Jane Burden, a beautiful model who appears in many Pre Raphaelite paintings (it is
she who sat for nearly all Rossetti s later works). Jane, together with her sister Bessie, did
embroideries for Morris s firm. Philip
Webb designed much of the furniture, metalwork, and many tiles. For stained glass, Morris generally
designed the backgrounds and
Burne Jones drew most of the figures, with Rossetti and Ford Madox
Brown also contributing designs. Burne Jones also collaborated with
Morris on tapestries, designed many tiles, and drew for the books produced by the Kelmscott Press,
founded by Morris in 1891. Morris was described by Walter Crane as being the first to approach the
craft of practical printing from the point of view of the artist . The most important book of the Press
was the Kelmscott Chaucer, which has been described as the most beautiful book to be produced since
the
Renaissance. This had typography and borders by Morris, with 87 illustrations by Burne Jones. Other
artists working as designers for the Kelmscott Press included C. M. Gere, Arthur Gaskin, and E. H.
New, all from the Birmingham School of Art, and the Birmingham illustrators were in general much
influenced by Morris s books.
Morris s novels are still readily available from second hand bookshops

Insurance Is A Policy, Your Parents, And Insurance
We have all heard of insurance at least once in our lifetime. From the advertisements, the marketing
companies, your parents, etc. Insurance is a policy, where for the premium paid, the insurance
company agrees to protect you within stated amounts, from the potential losses listed in the policy. In
other words, the insurance company is agreeing to protect you from certain events that can happen,
listed in the policy. Did you know there are tons of different types of insurance out there? There s
insurance for everything! Well... not everything, but most. There is Flood, Crime, Travel, even Dog
Bite Insurance.
Although there are many types of insurance, there are some that are a necessity for almost everyone.
You have Homeowners Insurance or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It protects your home and everything in it from a fire, theft, or any other type of catastrophe that could
arise.
Have you ever had any problems with your car, or got in an accident? Well, that s where Auto
Insurance comes in. Auto Insurance covers the damage as a result of injury, death, vehicle, and
property. This type of insurance isn t required, but is highly suggested if you have a car. It would be
terrible to find that your car was stolen in the middle of the night, and you don t have car insurance to
help you pay for the repercussion.
Health Insurance is a necessity for anyone living in America. It protects you from paying the entire
costs of medical services. Depending on your plan s benefits, you may even be able to visit the doctor,
without paying a co pay. It all boils down to what kind of plan you have. There are four basic types of
health insurance. Fee For Service Plans, High Deductible Health Plans, HMOs, and PPOs. Each plan
has their own advantages and disadvantages. And last but not least, Life Insurance. Life Insurance
provides you and your family with financial coverage upon death. When you die, Life Insurance will
give money to your family to help pay for the funeral service, and burial arrangements. Although it is
a sensitive subject for many, everyone needs it.
To generalize the subject at matter...
Although all of these insurances are greatly advised, there are

A Study On Corporate Ownership And News Bias
Martin Gilens and Craig Hertzman at Yale University, have conducted a study on the Corporate
ownership and news bias through the newspaper coverage of the 1996 Telecommunication Act
addressing the claim: Financial interests of corporate owners lead America s news bureaus to
downplay the significant issues surrounding the growing concentration of ownership of the country s
mass media (Martin and Hertzman, 2000.) These researchers affirm that it is impossible to think of
any democratic society deprived of the mass media because in such utopist environment the citizens
would miss the information they need to evaluate the desirability or undesirability of public choices
and assess the value of political leaders and social conditions. They state that the essential role of the
press is what leads critics to wonder about the danger derived from the mass media concentration.
Their case study focuses on one part of the 1996 Act that specifically removed restrictions on TV
stations ownership with the result to benefits companies that already owned many TV stations at the
disadvantage of those that did not. They underline that the similarity of interests in the conglomerate
has reduced diversity in the news and enhanced self interest bias. The conclusion of this serious study,
performing multivariate analysis tests, of which the researchers provide exhaustive data, translates to
the relevant issue of a systematically slanted press aimed at improving its own business rather than

Modern Slave Show Research Paper
Greetings! Welcome to the Modern Slave Show.
This channel isn t for everyone. It s for non conformist creative, freethinkers people with a brain who
use it, think for themselves and think outside of society s nonsense. It s for educational purposes. This
is an introductory video. Long as it is, it skims through an important array of issues. So, I value your
patience.
There is plenty of material about the topics I deal with on the web, YouTube for a thorough
investigation. Useful information is out there, but one must make the effort in pursuing it. One must
train himself to know what to look for. What are the motives of the publishers? Often what is nonsense
is what people try to sell you! Money is the main motive. There is a lot of data ... Show more content

Foundations of Mythology
How is the word myth used popularly? For example, what does the statement, It s a myth mean? In
contrast, how is the word myth used in the academic context? After considering the definition in your
textbooks and course materials, write a definition in your own words.
The word myth can be used in so many ways and it can also have so many different meaning based on
the contents of the word. It can have a religious tone to it, where it describes the foundations of some
people s belief system as most religions do. In an extreme case it can shape someone s way of life. It
can also be used as an escape from reality in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What is the relationship between belief, knowledge, mythology, and religion? Where do mythology
and religion intersect? Where do they diverge? Think about the function of myth and religion in
helping human beings cope with change, suffering, loss, and death.
The relationship between belief, knowledge, mythology, and religion is one that interweaved, where
religion, mythology and belief share the most in common, knowledge is just as important. Mythology
and religion intersect in their origins; because of the belief in mythology religion grew. I don t believe
you can really have one without the other. Most religions today at least the big 3 rely on a foundation
or a belief in a Supreme Being or deity that takes on mythical status and is the bias of those religions.
Without the belief in the myth the religions would fall apart. And that leads us to the where they
diverge, in to today society more and more people have begun to question religion atheism is one of
the fast growing problem facing modern day religions. Where religion once relied and mythology for
its origins in today day and age religion itself is being categorized as mythology itself
How would you defend mythology s relevance in contemporary culture? Think about familial and
cultural traditions. Also, consider how mythology is used in the arts and in advertising to typify human
experience.
In today s world mythology is divided, if you are a

  • 2. Alexander III Research Paper Following his father s assassination, Alexander III was advised that it would be difficult for him to be kept safe at the Winter Palace. As a result, Alexander relocated his family to the Gatchina Palace, located twenty miles south of St. Petersburg, making it his primary residence. Under heavy guard he would make occasional visits into St. Petersburg, but even then he would stay in the Anichkov Palace, as opposed to the Winter Palace. In the 1860s Alexander fell madly in love with his mother s lady in waiting, Princess Maria Elimovna Meshcherskaya. Dismayed to learn that Prince Wittgenstein had proposed to her in spring 1866, he told his parents that he was prepared to give up his rights of succession in order to marry his beloved Dusenka . On 19 May 1866, Alexander II informed his son that Russia had come to an agreement with the parents of Princess Dagmar of Denmark, his fourth cousin. Before then, she had been the fiancée of his late elder brother Nicholas. At first Alexander refused to travel to Copenhagen, declaring that he did not love Dagmar and his desire to marry Maria. Although coming up with solution to those problems are challenging, at least I learned how to address them. Since I understand the causes and consequences of social problems, I am now comfortable to discuss my points of view with another individual in an educated discussion. Furthermore, understanding the causes and consequences has also allowed me to understand that not everybody has the same points of view. We can all go through the same situation, but we all experience it differently, and precisely that experience is what shapes our perceptions of things. Thus, my empathy increased greatly, because when my perception gets challenged, I understand the the other person has experienced a situation differently than mine. Likewise, the topic discussed in class challenged the stereotypes I had of situations or even other people. For example, I stereotyped the poor as lazy or as people who did not tried to get out of poverty. However, after material discussed in class I mainly understood that being poor was not even their choice; several inherit being poor from their parents. I understood that it is not in their power to change their economic situation, but it relies on the institutions that do not allow them to earn better wages, or do not allow them to have the same opportunities as others. In industries that are capital and research intensive such as the computer industry, efficiency requires large if not very large scale operation. For such industries, the main source of scale economies is new product development costs or new, cheaper ways of production costs; spreading those huge costs over an increased number of units result in increased efficiency and in the end lower costs for end users/consumers. AMD and Intel both face tremendous economies of scale. What is so beautifully unique is how he wrote it in an artful, refined dissimulation of his true self. He is deliberately misleading and often indirect as if to hide beneath his words, coming across as oblique and delicate at the same time. This further stresses the idea of the mask, being concealing and elusive, in many ways. This particular piece of work is unequaled, not only to the literary world, but the author himself. • 10. Planned Market And Mixed Market Economies Planned, Market, and Mixed Economies Each country has its own economic system, a system for allocating its resources among its citizens, both individual and organizations (Ebert Griffin, 2015, p. 11). There are three economic systems: planned economies, market economies, and mixed market economies. Economic systems are defined by how the five factors of productions are handled: labor, capital, entrepreneurs, physical resources, and information resources. Factors of production are the resources that a country s businesses use to produce goods and services (Ebert Griffin, 2015, p. 11). Planned Economies A planned economy can be defined as an economy that relies on a centralized government to control all or most factors of production and to make all or most production and allocation decisions (Ebert Griffin, 2015, p. 12). There are two forms of planned economies: communism, in which the government owns and operates all factors of productions, and socialism, where the government owns and operates only selected factors of productions. China and North Korea are both examples of current communist countries; Denmark and Sweden are both examples of current socialist countries. ENCODE has their own definition of functionality, which includes any discrete genome segment that encodes a defined product or displays a reproducible biochemical signature. With the rapidly degrading definition of the gene in recent years due to insights from projects like ENCODE and the discovery of pervasive genomic transcription, the ENCODE definition of functionality could be the key to determining the new definition of a gene. Moreover, research on this narrow subject is rather limited and comes from fairly old studies. The idea that men and women cannot be just friends, is due to the idea that there must be some aspect of physical and or romantic involved. As Reeder discussed traditional societal norms and expectations of male female relationships have played a role in how we view cross sex friendships today. The literature on cross sex friendships has explored the role of attraction and the impact it has on the dynamics of cross sex relationships. This literature review will investigate the role of attraction on cross sex relationships and whether attraction hinders being friends with someone you like. Further, exploring the various common themes among the literature on attraction in cross sex friendships: the definition of attraction is subjective and there are different types of attraction, attraction tends to confuse the definition of the relationship, men perceive attraction more than women and lastly, attraction indeed is a challenge but not necessarily detrimental. It is hypothesized that attraction creates a significant challenge for those involved in a cross sex relationship. • 21. Phychoanalysis In Delacroix s Liberty Leading The People While feminism and Marxism work well in hybrid approaches to Delacroix s Liberty Leading the People, the same cannot be said for every methodology. This is especially true in regards to psychoanalysis. It is difficult to apply this approach to an older artist like Delacroix. The methodology is so recent and grounded in being able to converse with the artist. In the case of Delacroix, scholars base their psychoanalytic findings on the artist s writings, both letters and journals. While this can be useful in some cases, such as Wilkin s use of it to determine Delacroix s opinions on other artists, it is not when trying to determine Delacroix thoughts on himself and his own art. This means the scholarship is based on Delacroix s self fashioning. While one can speculate on the subconscious motivations behind his writings, they simply do not add any depth to our understanding of Liberty Leading the People. Scholars try to link psychoanalysis with biography to ground their findings, but this only makes the biography method appear faulty and compromises readers willingness to accept fact. Thus, psychoanalysis does not add anything substantial to the study of Delacroix s painting and should not be used in conjunction with the hybridization of biography, formalism, or social history. At the operations management (OM) level, an output based model of seven key result areas (KRAs) for the management of the service delivery system can be used as the analytical framework, derived from Lockwood and Jones (1990) cited in Slack et al (2007). The managed KRAs are assets, employees, capacity (or customers), productivity, service, income (or control), and quality. Within each area of this model there are a range of alternative operational policies and procedures that might be adopted to reflect the type of hospitality business, its size, and its technology. For instance, yield management is an approach to managing capacity in hotels, especially large, chain properties (Jarvis et al., 1998); quality control is applied largely in quick service restaurants, whereas total quality management (TQM) has been applied to a few hotels, such as Ritz Carlton. I m not saying wanting material gain is a bad thing, but what I am saying is that for me, money is not the number one concern when my dream is to help others. My hunger to help others only grows by the day. Because of what s going on in the world we live in today, I believe that it is important that those who are less fortunate than others have the assistance they need to get to an even playing field, health wise, with others. Throughout my life, I always enjoyed to help everyone. When I was little, I actually loved being the teacher s pet. My naive child mind thought I was the bomb by helping my teachers. Like Winthrop, Russell Conwell, author of Acres of Diamonds, stresses how great America is with emphasis that it somehow ordained from a higher power. However, Winthrop focuses maintaining this status through unselfish means while Conwell uses this as a way to establish individual success. There never was a place on earth more adapted than the city of Philadelphia to day, and never in the history of the world did a poor man without capital have such an opportunity . . . Because to make money honestly is to preach the gospel (Conwell, 179). His argument that Philadelphia is the greatest city on earth ties in with the concept of American exceptionalism. The connection he makes with religion is contrasted to Winthrop since Winthrop argues that America will lose its exceptionality if it does not avoid selfish actions. Conwell argues that God is placing America in such a place that every person has the ability to acquire individual wealth. • 27. Summary Of On Going Home By Joan Didion For the first time in 130 years, more young adults are living with parents until their mid thirties. Part of this could be an emotional attachment keeping them from leaving home because after they leave, everything will change. However, many are losing their real sense of home and are just using it as a place where they can avoid paying bills and many other responsibilities. Many young adults now do not understand the extensive sacrifice it is to leave their one and only home. In On Going Home, Joan Didion expounds on her struggle to connect with her current house, in a nostalgic and resigned tone, and vivid imagery, symbolism, and comparison Didion expresses the regret she feels every time she remembers she left her home . The essay it s based on the time Didion visited her parents home to celebrate her daughter s 1 year old birthday. Throughout the visit Didion couldn t help but feel resentment to leave her home . Didion stated that she came to dread my husband s evening call because she didn t want to go back to Los Angeles or even be reminded of it (2). This bridge has become the symbol of Bristol much like the Eiffel tower has of Paris, and the Opera house has of Sydney. The story of the Clifton Suspension Bridge began in 1754 with the dream of a Bristol wine merchant who donated his life savings to build a bridge over the gorge. To decide on a suitable design for the bridge a competition was held. Thomas Telford, the leading civil architect of the time was the judge. Mr. Telford attempted to submit his own design; however the decision to declare himself the winner was overruled and a second competition was held. This time, contrary to the recommendation of ... Apparently a local land owner wished to drive his carriage to Bristol without having to walk or negotiate the steep roads on the sides of the gorge, so he convinced the engineers, and paid for the necessary modifications to widen the design of the bridge. It is fortunate that he insisted on this widening because the bridge as it was originally designed would have never been able to cater to modern traffic demands. The bridge was finished in 1859 and opened to the public in 1864. Before the bridge was built the slip way was the only way to cross the river without taking a long detour. The slip way was crossed at high tide by rowing a boat across, and at low tide by crossing on series gangplanks that were tied together. Both crossings were fairly dangerous and extremely inconvenient and therefore a bridge was a very popular idea. The Clifton Suspension bridge is world famous and one of the essential things to see in the West Country. It is a beautiful piece of engineering that is lovely maintained by the bridge staff. The two towers of the bridge span from Clifton to summerset, the Clifton tower is build on a solid rock surface that acts as a foundation, however the summerset tower needed a massive brick buttress before work on the tower could begin. In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, the Miller is a deceitful man that advances in her career through deception and tells a fabliau, a comical fable told in verse that is characterized by sexual obscenity. Fabliaux were generally told by jongleurs, or medieval entertainers. This particular fabliau is a bawdy tale that discusses a scandalous affair. Through the Miller s description as a thieving and scheming peasant and the Miller s raunchy tale, Chaucer criticizes the dangerous precedent of corruption set by the nobility which consequently spreads to all classes due to esteem and success amassed by corruption and the stereotype of the Third Estate or lower class as lewd and having a lack of intelligence. Chaucer s description of the Miller as deceitful and thieving through his appearance and actions criticizes the upper class tendency to underestimate the ability of the lower class. The upper class is so consumed with maintaining their image of affluence and looking down on the lower class, they fail to recognize that peasants can learn to imitate their habits of corruption that lead to immense wealth. Olam ha ba or the world to come is the belief that the soul returns to God to wait to be reborn with the coming of the Messiah. Death allows for Jewish people to value life and their short time spent on earth (Parkes, 101). It is believed that beyond death, life does not include earthly pleasures such as eating and drinking. After death life consists of being, in the glory of the Divine Presence. There is no hell after death as a destination. Rather, happiness to those who lived a righteous life and suffering to those who sinned and led others to sin. There is more of a reward versus punishment system instead of destinations. The punishment given to those in life after death is not set in stone, it is described in the Talmud as, vague and contradictory (Darmesteter, page 51 52). When your body dies your soul leaves it and begins its journey to return to God, this journey is considered a purification process so your soul is pure in the world to come. The purification process for those who lived a fulfilling and righteous life may only take a day or so while those who lived a life full of sin take a longer time on their journey to purification, taking up to a year.
