How Fiction Ruined Love Summary
Alain de Botton in How Fiction Ruined Love says that our culture s infatuation on
over climatic, romanticized love stories has a shock on our actual lives. In modern
culture, few stories manage to convey the complications of a long lasting relationship.
Namely, people often go into relationships with unrealistic and high expectations.
Few examples of this are when the going gets tough, couples often clamp under the
pressure of everyday life. Ultimately, Alain de Botton argues that loveis so much more
that just sexual feeling and passion that romantic novels and movies portray it to be.
Romance movies ignore such crucial component involved with love such as a career.
One of the points De Botton makes is that romantic films and novels tend
Essay on Hector Tobar s The Tattooed Soldier
Downtown Los Angeles is one of the busiest commercial centers in the United States.
However, the city holds two groups of people in different economic level the
homeless and the working class. Hector Tobar frequently includes the landscape of
the setting in downtown Los Angeles in The Tattooed Soldier. The novel is about two
immigrants from Guatemala who have moved to Los Angeles. The protagonist,
Antonio, takes a revenge on the antagonist, Longoria because he murdered Antonio s
wife and son when he was a Guatemalan soldier. Tobar applies a number of metaphors
to connect the buildings and freeways in downtown to Antonio s position in the city.
Buildings, freeways, and shadows are metaphors for Antonio s economic and social
status.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The stock exchange building represents material life and the windowless building
represents security. Antonio can observe these buildings that illustrate an ideal life,
but he belongs to none of the qualities that are associated with these buildings. He is
exposed to all the danger of the city with no money at all. Clearly, this reflects the
poverty level of the protagonist compared to the working class in Los Angeles. The
people who are inside these buildings are having a good life, but Antonio is
homeless; he does not even have money to rent a shelter to protect himself.
The structure of the freeways illustrates the lack of freedom in the protagonist s
social life. In the beginning of the story, the author uses sleep under the freeway
repetitively to emphasize Antonio s low social status (9). Freeways represent
work and economic activity, but Antonio has fallen off the track. He is now under
the freeway because he has dropped from the flow of the busy city life to the
lowest level in Los Angeles. Antonio was a scholar in Guatemala, but he works as a
bus boy and later becomes homeless after he moved to Los Angeles. The author
states, Los Angeles made him [Antonio] short (53). Antonio s social status is lowered
by the city. He has become so short that it is almost impossible for the others to notice
him. A factor that lowers Antonio s social status is communication. Antonio meets
Frank in the homeless camp who says that people are switching lane so
American Beauty Is An American Drama Film Released
American Beauty is an American drama film released in 1999. The movie is
written by Alan Bell and directed by Sam Mendes. American Beauty has won
countless numbers of awards including the Academy award for best picture, best
actor, best director, and many more. The movie focuses on the 42 year old sexually
frustrated father who has a mid life crisis after meeting his daughter s best friend.,
Lester Burnham is in an unhappy, broken marriage with Carolyn, a neurotic yet
ambitious real estate broker. Lester Burnham has a midlife crisis when he meets
his daughter s best friend, Angela and starts having sexual fantasies about her.
When he hears, Angela telling his daughter she would find him sexually attractive
if he loses weight and gets in shape, so he begins working out and smoking
marijuana that is supplied by his neighbor s son. The movie ends with a shot in
Lester s head by his homosexual neighbor who thinks his son is having physical
relationship with Lester. Many of the characters in this movie can be diagnosed
with one or more mental disorders, However, I will be focusing on the main
character s mental disorder, Lester Burnham. Lester was a 42 years old man who
goes through many changes from the beginning to the end of the movie. The movie
begins with Lester feeling depressed, he feels like a loser since he does not receive
any kind of respect from his wife, daughter, and at work. He is in an unhealthy
marriage; he does not have any sort of sexual relationship with
The Epic Of Gilgamesh Flood
Throughout history, there have been many different stories, fables, and myths, all
deriving from many different cultures, but all with the same basic elements and
storylines. One of the common stories we see in these cultures histories, is that of
a flood that wipes out the human race. In all of the flood accounts, we can learn a
little about what these cultures believe. Some say a flood like this actually
happened, while others believe this to be a symbol for a greater message. All the
flood stories have many similarities, but also many differences, resulting from a
difference in cultural beliefs. Based on this alone, it is easy to conclude that these
stories must be a symbol for something greater, and didn t actually happen. To begin,

First, in The Epic of Gilgamesh, with Utnapishtim, he brings his wife, craftsmen,
and riches on his ship with him. In contrast to this, Noah only brings his family
along on his ship. Also in Noah s story, it rained for forty days and forty nights, the
water lasted for one hundred and fifty days, and he spent forty days on the
mountain. In Utnapistim s story, the flood only lasted for seven days, and he was
only stuck on the mountain for seven days as well. When stranded on the mountain,
Utnapishtim sent out three birds. First, a dove that returns, next a swallow that
returns, and finally a raven that leaves and does not return. While Noah is stuck on
the mountain, he only sends out two birds, but one of which he sends out multiple
times. First, a raven that returns, next a dove that returns, then the same dove that
returns, but this time with an olive leaf, and finally the same dove again that
leaves and does not return. In Noah s story, there is only one God that is the
destroyer, the protector, and the promise maker all in one. In Utnapishtim s story,
there are three different gods that fill these rolls. The god Enil is the destroyer, the
god Ea is the secret giver and protector of life, and the god Bellet ili is the promise
maker. At the ends of both stories, both Utnapishtim and Noah are rewarded, except
Utnapishtim is granted eternal life, whereas Noah is given another three hundred and
Disadvantages Of A Vertical Merger
The market shares of the combining entities prior to the proposed merger and of the
combined entity subsequent to the merger, constitute an important criteria for
determination of the level of concentration in the market which in turn indicates the
level of competition in the market.
The European Commission takes into consideration the accretion of market power in
the upstream as well as the downstream market. It is difficult to assess the adverse
effects of a vertical integration, as only the market share is not a clear indicative of
all the possible anti competitive effects of such a merger. As discussed in the earlier
section of this study, the European Commission also takes into account the loss of
potential competition that might result from the vertical merger.
In India the Competition Act, 2002 categorically numerates, among the factors, the
market shares of the persons and/or entities in a combination, both individually and
as a combination. The CCI has to adjudge which other factors in addition to the
market share has to be considered for the evaluation of the proposed merger.
Lessons to be learned: The assessment of a vertical merger is much more complex
than horizontal mergers and the same approach cannot be used to adjudge both the
types of mergers. However, the Competition Act, 2002, does not specify or... Show

factors for considering the impact of a merger on the access to the inputs and

which could lead to foreclosure of access to the market and other non coordinated or

The Elizabethan Theatre Era
Introduction to our specific production and the theatre design element: While
evaluating the history of A Midsummer Night s Dream, it is apparent that an exact
date, time, or stage design has been identified for this particular Shakespearean
masterpiece. It is believed by some scholars that William Shakespeare wrote this
play with a wedding in mind, while other s will argue that the final script wasn t
performed for anyone in particular, but rather for the general public in an
amphitheater setting. According to the time period that A Midsummer Night s
Dream was made public, it is a large possibility that it was not performed in London,
and that it was most definitely not performed as a small production in an Inn yard, or
even an indoor playhouse.
The Elizabethan Theatre Era
Prior to the rule of the Queen Elizabeth I, acting was not seen as a serious profession.
Most of the players (unless they were summoned to the King s court) were working
men, who held everyday jobs in addition to being entertainers. Although the plays that
could be performed were limited (as the theme was normally based around religion),
the demand for theatrical entertainment was vast, and the theatre was becoming a
fashionable place to go for entertainment.
Of course, with the theatre growing into a popular form of amusement, a large issue
surrounding the art was a finding a place to perform. Because of the strict regulations
passed by the English government (which was tremendously
Field Work Placement
I am writing to you today to inquire about a possible field work placement at
Evanston Township High School for the 2017 2018 school year. I am a first level
BSW student from Loyola University Chicago, and was referred to you by my
internship coordinator, Ms. Sylvia Corcoran.
As a hospital volunteer, I am required to be kind, patient, punctual, and organized so
that I can best serve the patients I work with. These qualities are critical for anyone
pursuing a career in social work to possess in any environment not just a hospital.
Having these qualities has enabled me to adapt to the needs of each individual that I

Global Warming Should Be The Paramount Struggle Of
Our Time
It is often said that humans are the largest threat to Earth, but not because of
violence between one another. Humans are the largest threat to Earth because we
as a species pollute the air, land, and water of the very planet we call home.
Without Earth all life as we know it will cease to exist. Global warming is the
product of the pollutants created by mankind. If mankind as a whole does not
change its ways we will ruin our one and only planet that is suitable to sustain life. In
Warm, Warmer, Warmest an article by Nicholas D. Kristof
argues that that stopping
global warmingshould be the paramount struggle of our time (Warmer). While
researching this topic I used multiple resources to better understand what Nicholas
Kristof is explaining in his article. I first looked at a government run website that
helped explain global warming and how it is affecting us today. Then I looked at
news articles from different news organizations. Lastly I watched a video that
explained why we can no longer ignore global warming. All of those resources
helped me better understand my research topic and I feel that I have gained more
knowledge about global warming. Warm, Warmer, Warmest is an article written by
Nicholas D. Kristof that states that global warming is the biggest problem humans
face today. Warm, Warmer, Warmest an article in the book Science and Society by

A Time To Die Analysis
The following will serve as part review, part confessional. I started this book two
years ago this month. I began reading A Time to Die after reading a
recommendation from a friend of mine. I began reading it, hoping for a book that
would immediately hold me captive and not release me from its powers until I had
finished the journey.
Well...
The book held me captive, but not in the way I was expecting. I saw much of
Parvin in myself. Reading this book, written in first person present tense, was like
experiencing a dream. Parvin was convinced her life had no meaning, that she had
wasted her life. She wanted her life to mean something but when she was presented
with opportunities to create meaning, she pushed back and tried to find an easier ...

It was difficult to read for this feeler. I will confess, I put it down for an emotional
breather...And left it for two years.
I have been following the author on Facebook and her blog during these past two
years and she impressed me with her intentionality in the way she interacts with her
readers and followers. Her posts are a shining light in the cynical, angry world of
Facebook. One of the central themes in A Timeto Die is the idea of bringing God s
Shalom or a peace that comes from living the way God intended. This is not simply
something she wrote about for her story, she is very active about living it out in her
blogging and Facebook posts.
I have been blessed by this girl s shining light, and it was because of this that I
finally decided to finish the book. There were some challenging moments, as I felt
my own character developing right alongside Parvin s. This book contains some
perplexing characters with very flawed thinking and I understood her frustration as
she struggled to reason with them. There were also beautiful moments, as the events
and interactions which pushed Parvin s (and my own) comfort and world view made
way to show God s incredible love for His
Atmosphere and Suspense in The Reluctant
Fundamentalist...
How does Mohsin Hamid use ominous details and imagery to enhance the atmosphere
and create suspense in The Reluctant Fundamentalist? The Reluctant Fundamentalist
written by Mohsin Hamid, tells the story of a young Pakistani named Changez, who
arrived at Princeton at the vulnerable age of 18. Four years later he graduated
without having received a single B (4), and began working at the elite valuation firm
Underwood Samson. Changez was, in the beginning, infatuated with the idea of the
American Dream, but at length he realized that the new life he had adopted in New
York constituted a betrayal of his deepest self, and finally returned home. However,
although Changez s story took place in American, the plot was actually set in Lahore,

However, although readers are informed in detail of Changez s life in New York,
little is said about the American stranger to whom the monologue is depicted. The
lack of detail regarding the stranger, yet the various indications that something is
slightly abnormal about him makes for an ominous and suspenseful atmosphere.
You prefer that seat, with your back so close to the wall?...And will you not
remove your jacket? (2), are among the first words exchanged between Changez
and the American. Although it is teatime in Lahore was not yet dark, Hamid wastes
no time in engulfing the stranger in a shroud of mystery. The quotation slightly
implies that the man has ensconced a gun within his jacket, and therefore wishes
to leave it on as not to reveal it to Changez. As Changez begins telling the stranger
his story, the waiter comes to take their order. Changez then remarks You seem
worried. Do not be; this burly fellow is merely our waiter, and there is no need to
reach under your jacket. (6). Even though Changez was, or pretended to be, oblivious
to this gesture, brushing it off by stating I assume to grasp your wallet (6), the
uncertain and uneasy atmosphere which Hamid has now created continues to linger
throughout the rest of novel. As Changez vivaciously launches into his story, the
waiter comes with the cups of tea and readers are again made aware of the novels
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
Hamlet was one of two inspirations for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I
believe the play Hamlet was a little absurd, especially in the extreme role vengeance
played, and how almost every character died in the end. Nothing was really
accomplished in the play Hamlet, except how Fortinbras reclaimed his land. There
was not a good guy in Hamletor a philosophy that the reader should be able to
support, much like in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. The end of Hamlet
was surprisingly hopeful, in the way of how Fortinbras came in and took over
leadership of the country. This change of power symbolizes how with the change of
generations, the generation of thought changes as well. Even though this play was
written in 1964, it is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Where in oppose to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, someone is actually
forcing them to stay there even if it is against their will. I believe this view was
noted by the point that Guildenstern made towards the end of the play when they
were on the boat on their way to England, where they were about to die.
Guildenstern said, where we went wrong was getting on a boat; we can move of
course, change direction, or rattle about, but our movement is contained within a
larger one that carries us along as inevitably as the wind and the current . This
meant that even it they were being their selves, they would still be being controlled
by a higher power, someone, or something, else. This can mean the government or
just life in general; someone will manipulate you and control you. There was another
line from Hamlet that could have functioned as a lesson or theme in Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern Are Dead. This lesson or theme would have been very specific and not
left for too much interpretation though. This completely encapsulates the meaning as
much as the other themes and lessons that are discussed, and it says It is dangerous
when the base of nature comes between the pass and foul of essence points of
mighty opposites . This basically means that it is dangerous for smaller and
Russ Shafer-Landau s The Fundamentals Of Ethics
In chapter 19 of the philosopher, Russ Shafer Landau s book, The Fundamentals of
Ethics, he presents an overview of the moral theory of ethical relativism. Ethical
relativism is the view that there is some moral truth and that truth is relative to each
person or culture. The overarching moral principle can be broken down into ethical
subjectivism and cultural relativism. The difference being ethical subjectivism says
an act is morally acceptable or forbidden if an individual approves or disapproves of
the action. And cultural relativism relies on the judgment of morally acceptable or
forbidden if a culture or society approves or disapproves of the action (Shafer Landau,
p. 295). Although it is evident throughout the chapter that Shafer Landau... Show

Shafer Landau definitely doesn t agree with ethical relativism in any form as a
sound moral theory however he does seem to think that at least the ideal observer
revision can at least cancel out the problem of moral progress. But since a culture
with the most informed and logical citizens can still be biased and cruel in reality
the ideal observer can still have moral beliefs that most people today would take
issue with. Similarly when discussing the practicality of this theory as a revision to
the problems of ethical relativism we have to ask ourselves in the real world
doesn t this allow for the same people s and cultures opinions and claims shape the
beliefs of their ideal observer. In general, people who believe that genocide, racism,
sexism, and torture is morally permissible, and relativists who would say that is
might be right in their culture or individual, have their own logic of why they are
right and the cultural bias can twist information to fit their viewpoint. In the real
world, the ideal observer s role is to simply try to remove a person or cultures
opinion from being the only thing that decides morality. But instead it places opinions
about morality behind an ideal logical version of ourselves or our cultures while in
reality that ideal observer is subject to the same bias as a construct of human beings
and doesn t cement a standard
The American Dream and Death of a Salesman Essay
The American Dream is one of the most sought after things in the United States, even
though it is rarely, if ever, achieved. According to historian Matthew Warshauer, the
vision of the American Dream has changed dramatically over time. In his 2003 essay
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Changing Conceptions of the American Dream,
Warshauer claims that the AmericanDream had gone from becoming wealthy by
working hard and earning money, to getting rich quickly and easily. He attributes this
change to television game shows, state lotteries, and compensation lawsuits. He also
argues that most Americans are more concerned with easy money than hard earned
money, and that Americans care mostly about material goods such as consumer
products, big... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows Willy s and Biff s obsession with material goods and consumer products,
just as Warshauer claims. In addition, in Warshauer s essay, he observes that rather
than adhering to a traditional work ethic, far too many Americans are pinning their
hopes on easy money . The characters of Willy and his two sons, Happy and Biff,
prove this. At the end of the play, Willy kills himself in a car crash in order to get
insurance money for his family, hoping that Happy and Biff will use that money to
start their own business. This shows that instead of continuing to work and make
money, he kills himself to get some easy money for his family. Also, Happy and
Biff plan on becoming successful businessmen, despite failing school. Biff
dropped out of high school after failing math, and Happy works as an assistant to
an assistant in a department store, where he makes very little money. Although
Biff acknowledges his failure, Happy acts as if he had the greatest job ever. He
seems to be blissfully unaware of the world around him, and seems to only be
interested in girls than actually trying to improve his position. Both Happy and
Biff seem to expect success to come to them, hoping to make easy money .
Warshauer also comments that in a society dedicated to capitalism ... the ability to
buy a big house and a nice car separates those who are considered successful from
those who are not . This is shown to be true in Death of a Salesman,
Essay On Double Standards
An Unbalanced Identity
Men and Women s lives are controlled by the double standards all around them.
Every gender is told how to feel and how not to feel, how to act and how not to act
rather than just acting and feeling as they want to. The lives of human beings are
plagued by these awful societal rules that are all meaningless. Despite the progress
made in equality for men and women, double standards create inequality for both
genders. No matter what a man appears like skinny, fat, short and tall, he is never
judged like a women is. Female standards are based solely upon what society thinks
is appropriate and they are judged and critiqued for not meeting these ideal body
images ( Double Standards ). On the Swimsuit Sport Illustrated magazine ... Show

Domestic violence isn t just towards women, but is also a large issue against men (
When it ). This issue seems to be very underminded and society becomes one sided
on the topic ( When it ). Cindy Boren from the Washington Post proves this saying
According to a 2010 study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more
than 5 million men had been domestically abused in the prior year. And the same
study found 40 percent of cases of severe domestic violence were perpetrated on
men. About 1 in 4 women (24.3 percent) and 1 in 7 men (13.8 percent) have
experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner. ( When it ). Violence is
violence period, and it is all wrong regardless of gender.
A social experiment on domestic violence was organized in the streets of London in
2014 by DareLondon (Hirinese). They stuck a random couple in public and made
them perform an act of violence to one another (Hirinese). When the male pushed the
female he immediately got stopped and asked What s wrong with you (Hirinese).
Now when the experiment was transitioned to the female pushing the male there was
not one comment and society continued as if nothing happened (Hirinese). Domestic
violence is most certainly not a one way

The Betrayal Of Brutus In Julius Caesar
Catharine MacKinnon once said, It s particularly hard to take being stabbed in the
back close to home. There s always a feeling of betrayal when people of your own
group oppose you. In Julius Caesar , Brutus decides to join the conspiracy against
Caesar. This in itself is a huge form of betrayal. The further into the play, the more
suspicion there is with Brutus. What are truly his objectives? How does he want it
all to end? Brutus was naive in believing Cassius. Overall, Brutus did betray Caesar
and it is evident in the story. Cassius is Brutus brother in law. Which means that
Brutus loved Cassius just as much as he loved Caesar. Brutus judgement may have
very well been conflicted because of his relation to Cassius. It is also evident that
Brutus was a good persuader(II, i , 120 130). This would make it apparent that Brutus
persuaded himself, as well as conspiracy, that if he killed Caesar it would be for a
good reason.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this citation, it shows that Cassius was jealous. Although, it also showed that
Brutus saw through his jealous and focused on the fawning bestowed upon him.
Lucius, who was Brutus servant gave Brutus anonymous letters that were meant to
persuade him into joining the conspiracy. This shows that he was unsophisticated
enough to not question the letter.(II, i, 46 58). Brutus may have wanted to believe
Cassius words for his own reasons, also being hesitant as being part of the
George Balanchine Influence On African American Dance
Ballet has been around since the 14th or 15th century that is has influenced many
people. Ballet introduces the use of using pointe dances where the dancer uses the
tip of their toes to perform various dances. One unique person who has changed
ballet to be more accessible to people and included diversity in the type of dancers
who can perform is George Balanchine. George Balanchine was born in St.
Petersburg, Russia 1904, where Russia was experiencing World War 1, the Russian
Revolution, and communism , but he wasn t involved in those incidents in his life
(Gottlieb 8). Furthermore, George Balanchine s family wasn t financially secure, so
he had to join either the Navy or Army, where he was later being examined by the
Imperial School... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, Balanchine s, The Nutcracker, has made a profound effect on the
public by making ballet more exclusive than it has been, which was the contrast
from the heart of ballet (Gottlieb 129). What this quote is explaining how George
Balanchine s ballet is defying what traditional ballet was about and he wanted it to
be a spectacle to all the people who see it. Also, with the creation of The
Nutcracker, it allowed children to join ballet without being discouraged by others.
The reason why this is the case is that this particular dance brings children on stage
just like how young Balanchine was on stage for Maryinsky (Gottlieb 129). This
demonstrates Balanchine s idea of contesting the status quo of traditional ballet and
thus breaking barriers of elitism in ballet. Moreover, the reason why George
Balanchine s performance, The Nutcracker, supports the class theme of challenging
the status quo of ballet is that it was new for all people being introduced to
Balanchine s ballet since ballet was initially inclusive, where only a few groups with
experience would watch traditional ballet, but with this performance many people
can enjoy what ballet is like without any required experience. Continuing from the
previous point, this particular dance involves the movement of arms and legs. Also,
there are a lot of
What Are Slave Codes Wrong
Slave Codes are rules placed by the government on how you re supposed to deal
with your slaves. The Slave Codes stated that slaves aren t allowed off the plantation,
and they determined what you should let your slaves have and own. The slaves
thought that it was unfair and not right that they had were treated in such a way they
felt that it was not fair for them to be treated this way they thought that they should

Comparison Of Alexander Mcqueen And Marc Jacobs
What do Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander
McQueen have in common? They are designers who have challenged ideas on gender
norms. (Marcangell, pg.1) McQueen fearlessly challenged the conventions of fashion.
Rare among designers, he saw beyond clothing s physical constraints to its conceptual
and imaginative possibilities. (Victoria and Albert Museum, 2015)

The And Measurement Of Microbiology Essay
Unit:8035 Visualisation Measurement of Microbiology
Bright Field Brightfield magnifying instruments are the established magnifying lens
in which the example is lit up from the back and the picture is framed because of the
retaining properties of the imaged objects. Brightfield light has been a standout
amongst the most generally utilized perception modes as a part of optical microscopy
for as long as 300 years. The system is most appropriate for use with settled, recolored
examples or different sorts of tests that normally ingest critical measures of noticeable
light. Pictures created with brightfield brightening seem dim and/or profoundly
shaded against a brilliant, frequently light dim or white, foundation.
Confocal Microscope
A Confocal magnifying lens is one kind of 3D Fluorescence Microscope in which
determination is expanded by dismissing out of concentrate light. This is finished by
utilizing pinholes with a particular Pinhole Radius and makes it to be an inborn 3D
magnifying lens: because of the centering way of the confocal magnifying instrument,
it is exceptionally appropriate for acquiring 3D pictures as an accumulation of
intensities at various purposes of the space.

Dark field microscopy (dark ground microscopy) portrays microscopy techniques, in
both light and electron microscopy, which prohibit the unscattered bar from the
picture. Accordingly, the field around the specimen (i.e., where there is no specimen

The Suffering Of Christians By Ascetic Christians
Christians that devoutly abstained form worldly pleasures were known as ascetic
christians. These christians recognized a distinct difference between the body and
the soul. Early ascetic christians privileged the soul over the body because the body
was a symbol of mortality and sin, while the soul was a symbol of spirituality and
salvation. Therefore, ascetic christians imposed suffering on their bodies and
renounced pleasure in order to draw closer to the divine nature of God by
strengthening the soul. These sufferings included abstaining from sex, giving up
material goods, and fasting. Different levels of sufferings were experienced by
ascetic christians and the audience of the works factored into the levels suffering
described in our readings. The suffering of christians written for ascetic christians
that were wealthy was vastly different than that of ascetic christians that simply
wanted to become extreme ascetics or better christians. One of the means of
suffering, or actually, renouncing of pleasure practiced by ascetic christians was
abstaining from sex. The abstaining of sex was used to become closer to God by
denying the worldly pleasure of sex. Sex satisfied the body, but ascetic christians
wanted to strengthen and satisfy their souls. They believed that sex was easy to
exploit and that it was the cause of many lustful sins. This proved that the body was
truly mortal and the cause of sin, and to strengthen the soul ascetic christians had to
abstain and purify
Terrorism And The Homeland Security
In homeland security they have many strategies to help protect the United States.
Whether it is preventing a terrorist attack, or preventing a natural disaster. Homeland
security has a strategy to make sure that everything works out. Now to give a brief
background, President George Bush came up with the national homeland security
strategy in July, 2002 after the attackof September, 11th. The strategy set forth overall
objectives to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America s
vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and assist in the recovery from
attacks that occur (Rabkin). Now in November of that same year, the Homeland
Security Act, was passed into a law furthermost creating the department... Show more

This meaning that homeland security will start stepping in to first detect the problem.
They are going to get people on the inside with the terrorist no matter what they have
to do, to detect what the terrorist s plan of attack is. They will then start to deter the
terrorists. They will start watching them trying to put holes in their plan. Then that is
when they step in and disrupt the whole attack and try to take the groups down. Now
this doesn t always happen as planned, so the DHS (Department of Homeland
Security) will protect the people potential targets of the attacks. This meaning that
even if they don t find out the plan, and hear a rumor of the threat of an attack, they
will step up the protection of the target against all capable terrorists. Now when they
are not protecting a target, or stopping an attack, they are trying to prevent and deter
the violent domestic extremism and radicalism that contributes to all of these terrorist
attacks. This meaning that when they are not involved with stopping an attack or
protecting a target, the DHS is out trying to prevent people from joining with these
radical groups that are committing these attacks. They are trying to lure people away
from getting involved with these extremist groups that are committing these attacks.
Now the way they are going about doing this, is to get a group of participation out of
the community. If the DHS gets

Notes On The Cash Rate
Q1. Explain what the cash rate is in simple terms. How do these rates influence the
levels of other interest rates in the economy?
The cash rate is a special benchmark interest rate set by the Reserve Bank of
Australia (RBA) based on its inflation target that is charged on overnight loans to
commercial banks (Lowe, 2009). Because the amount of money a bank has fluctuates
daily based on its lending and borrowing activities, the central bank always lends
money overnight to banks that experience a shortage. Therefore, the overnight rate,
that is, the cash rate here, could be the rate targeted by the central bank to influence
monetary policy.

In the short run, monetary policy affects economy largely by influencing interest rate.
In the long run, changes in the money supply affect the price level, though with an
uncertain lag.
FIGURE 2: EFFECT OF MONEY SUPPLY When confronted with an increase in the
demand for money, monetary authorities can chose to do nothing, thereby allowing
interest rate to rise, or they can increase the money supply enough to hold the interest
rate constant. It can be seen in the Figure 2, if monetary authorities do nothing, the
quantity of money in the economy remains at M, but the interest rate rise because the
greater demand for money increase the equilibrium combination from E up to E1.
Alternatively, monetary authorities can try to keep the interest rate at its initial level
by increasing its supply of money from Sm to Sm . In terms of possible combination
of the money stock and the interest rate, monetary authorities must choose from
points lying along the new money demand curve D .
A growing economy usually needs a growing money supply to pay for increase in
aggregate output. If monetary authority maintains a constant growth in the money
supply, and if velocity remains stable, the interest rate fluctuates unless the growth in
the supply of money each period just

In chapter one it talks about how hemachromatosis is a hereditary disease and it s
the most common genetic disease for people of European descent, in which the
body can t register that it has enough iron. So it keeps absorbing as much of it as
possible, and this can have very, serious side effects (including death). Iron is very
important for bacteria, cancer, and other things to grow. The way this disease is
most easily treated is blood letting. Looks like all those crazy blood letting, leech

this disease stuck around? To really simplify things: during the black plague in

Many Europeans died out. How does this relate to diabetes? Well, one thing that
sugar does is lower the freezing temperature of water. Pure water freezes at 32
degrees, but water with other substances in it, like sugar, freeze at much colder
temperatures. Our blood, being largely composed of water, then, would also freeze
at a lower temperature if it had higher levels of sugar. Brown fat is a type of fat that
the body produces in extremely cold temperatures that quickly burns sugar into
heat. Also a lot of greasy foods and fats also can cause diabetes. Consuming to
much of it can cause you to have a stroke or heart attack. So a diabetic in Northern
Europe during the Younger Dryas would have lived because their higher levels of
blood sugar would have kept their blood liquid and let their brown fat burn that sugar
into heat.

acetaldehyde; another enzyme cleverly called acetaldehyde dehydrogenase converts
the acetaldehyde into acetate. And a third enzyme converts

Abstract In this paper, performance metric of orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing (OFDM) system is analyzed over a composite fading channel i.e.
generalized K fading channel. Here, OFDM system is considered which include
repetition code to enhance the wireless link performance with simplicity. Symbol
error rate (SER) performance is evaluated using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and
16 qardature amplitude modulation (16 QAM) over generalized K fading channel.
This channel model considers Nakagami m distribution to define multipath and
gamma distribution to represent shadowing. Simulation results demonstrate that
improved system performance can be achieved using repetition code in severely
faded environment. A comparative study of coded and uncoded system is also given
in this paper. Consequently, SER performance is improved with the increase in shape
parameters.

The Geats preferred Beowulf to any other King so therefore revered him and

The exposition may be accomplished in a single sentence or paragraph, or, in the

exposition than others. A historical novel set in a foreign country several centuries
ago obviously needs to provide the reader with more background information than a

the outcome of the conflict and establishes some new equilibrium or stability

Courtly Love and Mediieval Romance
Introduction
The familiarity with the love tradition makes it easily mistakable for a natural and
universal phenomenon and even brings a laxity of enquiring into its origins.
However, it is difficult of not impossible to show love to be anything more than an
artistic phenomenon or construct a literary per formative innovation of Middle Ages.
Courtly love was a medieval European formation of nobly, and politely expressing
love and admiration. Courtly love was secret and between members of the nobility.
(Simpson).
The term courtly love was first popularized by Gaston Paris in 1883. It has since
come under a wide variety of definitions and uses, even being brushed off as
nineteenth century romantic fiction. Its understanding, beginning, ... Show more

In essence, courtly love was an experience between erotic desire and spiritual
attainment that now seems contradictory as a love at once illicit and morally
inspiring, passionate and disciplined, mortifying and exalting, human and
inspirational (Newman).
History
Many scholars who have believed that courtly love was a historical development rely
on historical literature. Courtly love is believed to have begun in southern France in
the ducal princely courts of Aquitaine, Provence, and Champagne, ducal Burgundy
and the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, a sufficiently peaceful yet isolated region, that
was perfect to birth and develop such a movement from around the time of the First
Crusade in 1099. In fact, many literary giants (Avignon, Toulouse, Nimes under the
domaine of Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine) retreated in this region. In addition, the
leisure class, the wealthy, and the self sufficient society discovered a new craze in
this area. The areas courts attracted intellectuals from all over, as the South was more
liberal and pluralistic, with Arabs, Jews and Byzantines being among the residents of
the area. Perhaps, even the men outnumbered the women in South France.
Eleanor of Aquitaine brought the ideals of courtly love from Aquitaine to the court of
France then to England where she was a queen to two kings. Her daughter Marie,
who was the Countess of Champagne, introduced courtly love to the Count of
Auditor Independence Essay
Abstract. The article reviewed was Role of Independence in Ethics for SMP
Accountants. The key of the abstract is to emphasize the strength of ethics and moral
behavior while conducting the audit (pp. 305 306).
Introduction. The author studied professional ethics and auditor independence at
small and medium firms. The researcher compared ethics with values, and laid
emphasis on the credibility as one of the most important ethics element (p. 306). The
concept of auditor independence and ethics has significantly changed for the last
century. There was a drastic move toward the neutrality in reporting. The main
objective of research is to analyze two terms independence of mind and
independence in appearance; and examine perceptions of independent auditors (pp.
307 308). The study is important because it investigates professional ethics as the key
of quality assurance services. The researcher considered two problems of the study:
shifts in regulations affect the auditors behavior, and changes in settings and culture
of businesses (p. 305).
Literature Review. The author used a systematic review of literature in the research.
The researcher examined studies of Gill and Cosseral (1996), The Code of Ethics for
Professional Accountants, and Guidance Note on Independence of Auditors to
analyze the word independence in depth. The author stated that the term might bring
a lot of confusion (p. 307). The term should emphasize that the professional is free
from financial relationships.

Cooking and baking is a central quality of this family s lifestyle. The narrative goes
into great detail and this has to do with a cultural placement. For Giovanni s
family, cooking and eating is a set of cultural rituals and the making of an
experience. It is a part of a performance art, not just a consumption product. Another
central quality of this family s lifestyle is essentially work. Puma writes: With
Johnny s help, father and son would finish up by eleven instead of after midnight
for the father alone. The next morning Johnny would still be sleepy, and his mother
would tickle his toes until he climbed out of bed for breakfast with his sister and
brother. By then his father would already be on the subway headed again for the
pastry shop Downtown (From the Margins 86).
This shows that Giovanni s life centers around work. Giovanni spends most of his
time working about six days a week. He is doing this in order to support his family.
In another scene when Johnny is making dough, he sees bugs in the flour, and
Giovanni also accidentally knocks cigarette ashes into the flour. Giovanni shrugs it
off as if it is no big deal. Giovanni is exhausted and he is simply being realistic and
just wants to get work done. Puma shows Giovanni s hard lifestyle when he writes:

In my life I have had up and downs. In the poem A Psalm of Life I think it relates to
me, in the poem it says Trust no Future, Howe er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury

has taught me to live in the moment and to never give up. The three pictures I have,
I believe that they represent what I want and who I am. The Turtle and the Bunny
is from the story the Tortoise and the Hare, it shows that the turtle never gave up.
The plant that is growing shows my growth as a person, first I started out small

The next picture is a fist up in the air, this shows the success I have done and

and friends and just hope they are happy. I used The Turtle and The Bunny as one
of my symbols because I thought it represented how I never gave up in things in
my life. At first I didn t really do anything I was failing some of my classes, but I
was persuaded and got my life back together. I never gave up trying to get it

would still struggle to be accepted within the United States. The second group would
face an even more difficult time assimilating in to the United States. They would
consist of refugees that had very little resources compared to the first wave. They
did not have access to the same levels of education, or were capable of speaking
English like the first wave of immigrants. The third wave would still face
difficulties, but had more resources when they arrived to the United States. Many of
the immigrants of the third wave consisted of family members of people already
here in the United States. They had access to a support system unlike those that were
part of the second wave. Even though they have become part of society, they still face
adversity like many other immigrant groups. Ever since the Mid 1970 s the

Liver Profile Essay
NORMAL VALUES OF LIVER SIZE BY ULTRASONOGRAPHY
IN CHILDREN IN THE EASTERN ANATOLIA REGION
PURPOSE
To purpose of this study was to determine the normal range of liver dimension and the
relationship of each with sex, age, body height and weight in healthy children.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS
The study comprised 310 healthy children (150 girls and 160 boys) with ages
ranging from 3 days to 16 years in children in the Eastern Anatolia Region. Children
who had underlying malignant tumors, infections, hematologic diseases, or other
conditions that could alter organ size were excluded. All measured organs were
sonographically normal. One dimension (Midclavicular Line Longitudinal Diameter
MCLLD) was obtained for liver with ultrasonography.
RESULTS
MCLLD of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is no consensus on which measurement parameter is most sensitive for
investigating the normal limits of organ dimensions. It is not practical to use the
volumes of the liver.6 Midclavicular line is better than sagittal line because the left
lobe of liver in particular differs in extension and size from person to person and with
age but right lobe measurements are more consistent.2 In many studies, the lengths of
the liver in the midclavicular and midsagittal planes were both measured, but they
found better correlation between the measurement of the midclavicular plane and the
body parameters.7 10 Thus an assessment in a single longitudinal axis is sufficient
and is easier to use.2,6 Longitudinal hepatic diameter at midclavicular line is the most
commonly applied and predominant clinical method of estimating liver size in
routine diagnostic situations.7 Therefore, we chose to use only MCLLD for liver
size measurement in our

TDA 31 3.3 Justify the kinds of situation when confidentiality protocols must be
breached. Adults who work with children and young people will come to know
most of the personal information like date of birth, address and contact details and
also sensitive information like behavioural issues, some medical information, family
background, whether parents are divorcing and so on. It is the responsibility of the
adult to keep this information confidential. They must protect the identity of the
child they work with and that of their families and carers. They must do everything
in their power to protect the privacy of every child and adult. This can be done by
keeping their personal information safe and secure. They can pass it on those who...

John is worried about his friend and tells this to his mother. His mother informs
this to the teacher. One day when children were changing into their PE uniforms,
the teacher notices some bruises on his back. When she asked rishi about this he
keeps quiet. In this case the teacher should inform the head teacher about this
incident and if may involve the police if necessary. Adults working with children
should be careful if taking photographs of children for displays or for any
magazine. Parental permission should be taken before giving their photographs for
any publication or media. But If they are approached by a police for some
investigation then their photographs should be given even if there is no parental
permission for this. You must use your professional judgement to decide whether to
share or not, and what information is appropriate to share. Base your information
sharing decisions considering the safety and well being of others who may be
affected by their actions. If you decide to share an information then record what you
have shared, with whom and for what purpose. If you not sure of how to deal with
the situation then seek advice from your supervisor or from a professional body.
Before sharing the information check why the other person wants the information,
what is the result they are trying to achieve and could the aims be achieved without
sharing the information. You should be open about
Water Quality Of Drinking Water
Time Magazine, had reported that, over 4,000 chemicals have been found in our
drinking water. This may not seem serious, but it is Water quality is sometimes
unseen, it is a serious issue yet often ignored by many. Most people are convinced
that bottle water is the best solution therefore no one really questions the quality of
tap water. As a result, tap water is rarely investigated, and this leads to a detrimental
issues. A three year study was conducted, for the testing of water quality, as a result
the report has found more than 200 unregulated chemicals in the tap water of 45
states. This seems very alarming and devastating water quality, however, that may not
be the case. The most common bottled waters are FijiВ® Bottled Waterand Dasani
bottled water share the same common traits. Much of bottled water s popularity
comes from the perception that it tastes better. However, in blind taste tests,
people cannot tell bottled water from tap water and, in some cases, prefer water
from the tap. For a small scale experiment on this Water is crucial for our
environment and our survival as a species. It is the key element that completes us
because humans are composed of 25% of water. Since we are dependent on water it
is necessary for the water to be clean. Since we are so dependent on Water, we must
understand the importance of water quality. There are several dangers that water

  • 2. How Fiction Ruined Love Summary Alain de Botton in How Fiction Ruined Love says that our culture s infatuation on over climatic, romanticized love stories has a shock on our actual lives. In modern culture, few stories manage to convey the complications of a long lasting relationship. Namely, people often go into relationships with unrealistic and high expectations. Few examples of this are when the going gets tough, couples often clamp under the pressure of everyday life. Ultimately, Alain de Botton argues that loveis so much more that just sexual feeling and passion that romantic novels and movies portray it to be. Romance movies ignore such crucial component involved with love such as a career. One of the points De Botton makes is that romantic films and novels tend
  • 3. Essay on Hector Tobar s The Tattooed Soldier Downtown Los Angeles is one of the busiest commercial centers in the United States. However, the city holds two groups of people in different economic level the homeless and the working class. Hector Tobar frequently includes the landscape of the setting in downtown Los Angeles in The Tattooed Soldier. The novel is about two immigrants from Guatemala who have moved to Los Angeles. The protagonist, Antonio, takes a revenge on the antagonist, Longoria because he murdered Antonio s wife and son when he was a Guatemalan soldier. Tobar applies a number of metaphors to connect the buildings and freeways in downtown to Antonio s position in the city. Buildings, freeways, and shadows are metaphors for Antonio s economic and social status.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The stock exchange building represents material life and the windowless building represents security. Antonio can observe these buildings that illustrate an ideal life, but he belongs to none of the qualities that are associated with these buildings. He is exposed to all the danger of the city with no money at all. Clearly, this reflects the poverty level of the protagonist compared to the working class in Los Angeles. The people who are inside these buildings are having a good life, but Antonio is homeless; he does not even have money to rent a shelter to protect himself. The structure of the freeways illustrates the lack of freedom in the protagonist s social life. In the beginning of the story, the author uses sleep under the freeway repetitively to emphasize Antonio s low social status (9). Freeways represent work and economic activity, but Antonio has fallen off the track. He is now under the freeway because he has dropped from the flow of the busy city life to the lowest level in Los Angeles. Antonio was a scholar in Guatemala, but he works as a bus boy and later becomes homeless after he moved to Los Angeles. The author states, Los Angeles made him [Antonio] short (53). Antonio s social status is lowered by the city. He has become so short that it is almost impossible for the others to notice him. A factor that lowers Antonio s social status is communication. Antonio meets Frank in the homeless camp who says that people are switching lane so

The Epic Of Gilgamesh Flood Throughout history, there have been many different stories, fables, and myths, all deriving from many different cultures, but all with the same basic elements and storylines. One of the common stories we see in these cultures histories, is that of a flood that wipes out the human race. In all of the flood accounts, we can learn a little about what these cultures believe. Some say a flood like this actually happened, while others believe this to be a symbol for a greater message. All the flood stories have many similarities, but also many differences, resulting from a difference in cultural beliefs. Based on this alone, it is easy to conclude that these stories must be a symbol for something greater, and didn t actually happen. To begin, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Utnapistim s story, the flood only lasted for seven days, and he was only stuck on the mountain for seven days as well. When stranded on the mountain, Utnapishtim sent out three birds. While Noah is stuck on the mountain, he only sends out two birds, but one of which he sends out multiple times. The god Enil is the destroyer, the god Ea is the secret giver and protector of life, and the god Bellet ili is the promise maker. At the ends of both stories, both Utnapishtim and Noah are rewarded, except Utnapishtim is granted eternal life, whereas Noah is given another three hundred and

Disadvantages Of A Vertical Merger The market shares of the combining entities prior to the proposed merger and of the combined entity subsequent to the merger, constitute an important criteria for determination of the level of concentration in the market which in turn indicates the level of competition in the market. The European Commission takes into consideration the accretion of market power in the upstream as well as the downstream market. It is difficult to assess the adverse effects of a vertical integration, as only the market share is not a clear indicative of all the possible anti competitive effects of such a merger. As discussed in the earlier section of this study, the European Commission also takes into account the loss of potential competition that might result from the vertical merger. In India the Competition Act, 2002 categorically numerates, among the factors, the market shares of the persons and/or entities in a combination, both individually and as a combination. The CCI has to adjudge which other factors in addition to the market share has to be considered for the evaluation of the proposed merger. • 7. The Elizabethan Theatre Era Introduction to our specific production and the theatre design element: While evaluating the history of A Midsummer Night s Dream, it is apparent that an exact date, time, or stage design has been identified for this particular Shakespearean masterpiece. It is believed by some scholars that William Shakespeare wrote this play with a wedding in mind, while other s will argue that the final script wasn t performed for anyone in particular, but rather for the general public in an amphitheater setting. According to the time period that A Midsummer Night s Dream was made public, it is a large possibility that it was not performed in London, and that it was most definitely not performed as a small production in an Inn yard, or even an indoor playhouse. The Elizabethan Theatre Era Prior to the rule of the Queen Elizabeth I, acting was not seen as a serious profession. Most of the players (unless they were summoned to the King s court) were working men, who held everyday jobs in addition to being entertainers. Although the plays that could be performed were limited (as the theme was normally based around religion), the demand for theatrical entertainment was vast, and the theatre was becoming a fashionable place to go for entertainment. Of course, with the theatre growing into a popular form of amusement, a large issue surrounding the art was a finding a place to perform. Because of the strict regulations passed by the English government (which was tremendously

  • 9. Global Warming Should Be The Paramount Struggle Of Our Time It is often said that humans are the largest threat to Earth, but not because of violence between one another. Humans are the largest threat to Earth because we as a species pollute the air, land, and water of the very planet we call home. Without Earth all life as we know it will cease to exist. Global warming is the product of the pollutants created by mankind. If mankind as a whole does not change its ways we will ruin our one and only planet that is suitable to sustain life. In Warm, Warmer, Warmest an article by Nicholas D. Kristof argues that that stopping global warmingshould be the paramount struggle of our time (Warmer). While researching this topic I used multiple resources to better understand what Nicholas Kristof is explaining in his article. I first looked at a government run website that helped explain global warming and how it is affecting us today. Then I looked at news articles from different news organizations. Lastly I watched a video that explained why we can no longer ignore global warming. All of those resources helped me better understand my research topic and I feel that I have gained more knowledge about global warming. Warm, Warmer, Warmest is an article written by Nicholas D. The book held me captive, but not in the way I was expecting. I saw much of Parvin in myself. Reading this book, written in first person present tense, was like experiencing a dream. Her posts are a shining light in the cynical, angry world of Facebook. One of the central themes in A Timeto Die is the idea of bringing God s Shalom or a peace that comes from living the way God intended. This is not simply something she wrote about for her story, she is very active about living it out in her blogging and Facebook posts. I have been blessed by this girl s shining light, and it was because of this that I finally decided to finish the book. There were some challenging moments, as I felt my own character developing right alongside Parvin s. This book contains some perplexing characters with very flawed thinking and I understood her frustration as she struggled to reason with them. There were also beautiful moments, as the events and interactions which pushed Parvin s (and my own) comfort and world view made way to show God s incredible love for His

The Reluctant Fundamentalist written by Mohsin Hamid, tells the story of a young Pakistani named Changez, who arrived at Princeton at the vulnerable age of 18. Four years later he graduated without having received a single B (4), and began working at the elite valuation firm Underwood Samson. Changez was, in the beginning, infatuated with the idea of the American Dream, but at length he realized that the new life he had adopted in New York constituted a betrayal of his deepest self, and finally returned home. You prefer that seat, with your back so close to the wall?...And will you not remove your jacket? (2), are among the first words exchanged between Changez and the American. Although it is teatime in Lahore was not yet dark, Hamid wastes no time in engulfing the stranger in a shroud of mystery. The quotation slightly implies that the man has ensconced a gun within his jacket, and therefore wishes to leave it on as not to reveal it to Changez. As Changez begins telling the stranger his story, the waiter comes to take their order. Changez then remarks You seem worried. Do not be; this burly fellow is merely our waiter, and there is no need to reach under your jacket. (6). Even though Changez was, or pretended to be, oblivious to this gesture, brushing it off by stating I assume to grasp your wallet (6), the uncertain and uneasy atmosphere which Hamid has now created continues to linger throughout the rest of novel. As Changez vivaciously launches into his story, the waiter comes with the cups of tea and readers are again made aware of the novels
  • 12. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead Hamlet was one of two inspirations for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I believe the play Hamlet was a little absurd, especially in the extreme role vengeance played, and how almost every character died in the end. Nothing was really accomplished in the play Hamlet, except how Fortinbras reclaimed his land. There was not a good guy in Hamletor a philosophy that the reader should be able to support, much like in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. The end of Hamlet was surprisingly hopeful, in the way of how Fortinbras came in and took over leadership of the country. This change of power symbolizes how with the change of generations, the generation of thought changes as well. Even though this play was written in 1964, it is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Where in oppose to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, someone is actually forcing them to stay there even if it is against their will. I believe this view was noted by the point that Guildenstern made towards the end of the play when they were on the boat on their way to England, where they were about to die. Guildenstern said, where we went wrong was getting on a boat; we can move of course, change direction, or rattle about, but our movement is contained within a larger one that carries us along as inevitably as the wind and the current . This meant that even it they were being their selves, they would still be being controlled by a higher power, someone, or something, else. This can mean the government or just life in general; someone will manipulate you and control you. There was another line from Hamlet that could have functioned as a lesson or theme in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. This lesson or theme would have been very specific and not left for too much interpretation though. This completely encapsulates the meaning as much as the other themes and lessons that are discussed, and it says It is dangerous when the base of nature comes between the pass and foul of essence points of mighty opposites . This basically means that it is dangerous for smaller and
  • 13. Russ Shafer-Landau s The Fundamentals Of Ethics In chapter 19 of the philosopher, Russ Shafer Landau s book, The Fundamentals of Ethics, he presents an overview of the moral theory of ethical relativism. Ethical relativism is the view that there is some moral truth and that truth is relative to each person or culture. The overarching moral principle can be broken down into ethical subjectivism and cultural relativism. The difference being ethical subjectivism says an act is morally acceptable or forbidden if an individual approves or disapproves of the action. And cultural relativism relies on the judgment of morally acceptable or forbidden if a culture or society approves or disapproves of the action (Shafer Landau, p. 295). Although it is evident throughout the chapter that Shafer Landau... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shafer Landau definitely doesn t agree with ethical relativism in any form as a sound moral theory however he does seem to think that at least the ideal observer revision can at least cancel out the problem of moral progress. But since a culture with the most informed and logical citizens can still be biased and cruel in reality the ideal observer can still have moral beliefs that most people today would take issue with. Similarly when discussing the practicality of this theory as a revision to the problems of ethical relativism we have to ask ourselves in the real world doesn t this allow for the same people s and cultures opinions and claims shape the beliefs of their ideal observer. In general, people who believe that genocide, racism, sexism, and torture is morally permissible, and relativists who would say that is might be right in their culture or individual, have their own logic of why they are right and the cultural bias can twist information to fit their viewpoint. In the real world, the ideal observer s role is to simply try to remove a person or cultures opinion from being the only thing that decides morality. But instead it places opinions about morality behind an ideal logical version of ourselves or our cultures while in reality that ideal observer is subject to the same bias as a construct of human beings and doesn t cement a standard

According to historian Matthew Warshauer, the vision of the American Dream has changed dramatically over time. In his 2003 essay Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Changing Conceptions of the American Dream, Warshauer claims that the AmericanDream had gone from becoming wealthy by working hard and earning money, to getting rich quickly and easily. In addition, in Warshauer s essay, he observes that rather than adhering to a traditional work ethic, far too many Americans are pinning their hopes on easy money . The characters of Willy and his two sons, Happy and Biff, prove this. At the end of the play, Willy kills himself in a car crash in order to get insurance money for his family, hoping that Happy and Biff will use that money to start their own business. This shows that instead of continuing to work and make money, he kills himself to get some easy money for his family. Also, Happy and Biff plan on becoming successful businessmen, despite failing school. Biff dropped out of high school after failing math, and Happy works as an assistant to an assistant in a department store, where he makes very little money. Although Biff acknowledges his failure, Happy acts as if he had the greatest job ever. He seems to be blissfully unaware of the world around him, and seems to only be interested in girls than actually trying to improve his position. Both Happy and Biff seem to expect success to come to them, hoping to make easy money . Warshauer also comments that in a society dedicated to capitalism ... the ability to buy a big house and a nice car separates those who are considered successful from those who are not . This is shown to be true in Death of a Salesman,

Every gender is told how to feel and how not to feel, how to act and how not to act rather than just acting and feeling as they want to. The lives of human beings are plagued by these awful societal rules that are all meaningless. Despite the progress made in equality for men and women, double standards create inequality for both genders. No matter what a man appears like skinny, fat, short and tall, he is never judged like a women is. There s always a feeling of betrayal when people of your own group oppose you. In Julius Caesar , Brutus decides to join the conspiracy against Caesar. This in itself is a huge form of betrayal. The further into the play, the more suspicion there is with Brutus. What are truly his objectives? How does he want it all to end? Brutus was naive in believing Cassius. Overall, Brutus did betray Caesar and it is evident in the story. Cassius is Brutus brother in law. Which means that Brutus loved Cassius just as much as he loved Caesar. Brutus judgement may have very well been conflicted because of his relation to Cassius. It is also evident that Brutus was a good persuader(II, i , 120 130). Ballet introduces the use of using pointe dances where the dancer uses the tip of their toes to perform various dances. One unique person who has changed ballet to be more accessible to people and included diversity in the type of dancers who can perform is George Balanchine. George Balanchine was born in St. Petersburg, Russia 1904, where Russia was experiencing World War 1, the Russian Revolution, and communism , but he wasn t involved in those incidents in his life (Gottlieb 8). Furthermore, Balanchine s, The Nutcracker, has made a profound effect on the public by making ballet more exclusive than it has been, which was the contrast from the heart of ballet (Gottlieb 129). What this quote is explaining how George Balanchine s ballet is defying what traditional ballet was about and he wanted it to be a spectacle to all the people who see it. Also, with the creation of The Nutcracker, it allowed children to join ballet without being discouraged by others. The reason why this is the case is that this particular dance brings children on stage just like how young Balanchine was on stage for Maryinsky (Gottlieb 129). This demonstrates Balanchine s idea of contesting the status quo of traditional ballet and thus breaking barriers of elitism in ballet. Moreover, the reason why George Balanchine s performance, The Nutcracker, supports the class theme of challenging the status quo of ballet is that it was new for all people being introduced to Balanchine s ballet since ballet was initially inclusive, where only a few groups with experience would watch traditional ballet, but with this performance many people can enjoy what ballet is like without any required experience. Continuing from the previous point, this particular dance involves the movement of arms and legs. Also, there are a lot of

Brightfield light has been a standout amongst the most generally utilized perception modes as a part of optical microscopy for as long as 300 years. The system is most appropriate for use with settled, recolored examples or different sorts of tests that normally ingest critical measures of noticeable light. Pictures created with brightfield brightening seem dim and/or profoundly shaded against a brilliant, frequently light dim or white, foundation. Confocal Microscope A Confocal magnifying lens is one kind of 3D Fluorescence Microscope in which determination is expanded by dismissing out of concentrate light. These christians recognized a distinct difference between the body and the soul. Early ascetic christians privileged the soul over the body because the body was a symbol of mortality and sin, while the soul was a symbol of spirituality and salvation. Therefore, ascetic christians imposed suffering on their bodies and renounced pleasure in order to draw closer to the divine nature of God by strengthening the soul. These sufferings included abstaining from sex, giving up material goods, and fasting. Different levels of sufferings were experienced by ascetic christians and the audience of the works factored into the levels suffering described in our readings. The suffering of christians written for ascetic christians that were wealthy was vastly different than that of ascetic christians that simply wanted to become extreme ascetics or better christians. One of the means of suffering, or actually, renouncing of pleasure practiced by ascetic christians was abstaining from sex. The abstaining of sex was used to become closer to God by denying the worldly pleasure of sex. Sex satisfied the body, but ascetic christians wanted to strengthen and satisfy their souls. They believed that sex was easy to exploit and that it was the cause of many lustful sins. This proved that the body was truly mortal and the cause of sin, and to strengthen the soul ascetic christians had to abstain and purify

The cash rate is a special benchmark interest rate set by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) based on its inflation target that is charged on overnight loans to commercial banks (Lowe, 2009). Because the amount of money a bank has fluctuates daily based on its lending and borrowing activities, the central bank always lends money overnight to banks that experience a shortage. So it keeps absorbing as much of it as possible, and this can have very, serious side effects (including death). Iron is very important for bacteria, cancer, and other things to grow. The way this disease is most easily treated is blood letting. Looks like all those crazy blood letting, leech sticking doctors weren t mistreating everyone. What is the author s argument for why this disease stuck around? To really simplify things: during the black plague in Europe, people with more iron in their system were more likely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many Europeans died out. How does this relate to diabetes? Well, one thing that sugar does is lower the freezing temperature of water. Pure water freezes at 32 degrees, but water with other substances in it, like sugar, freeze at much colder temperatures. Our blood, being largely composed of water, then, would also freeze at a lower temperature if it had higher levels of sugar. Brown fat is a type of fat that the body produces in extremely cold temperatures that quickly burns sugar into heat. Also a lot of greasy foods and fats also can cause diabetes. Consuming to much of it can cause you to have a stroke or heart attack. So a diabetic in Northern Europe during the Younger Dryas would have lived because their higher levels of blood sugar would have kept their blood liquid and let their brown fat burn that sugar into heat. Chapter 3 Summary In chapter 3 Dr. Moalem talks about how cholesterol rises too. Like when you consume alcohol, your body detoxifies it and then extracts calories from it. It s a difficult process that involves many different enzymes and a lot of organs, although most of the process takes place in the liver. First, an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase converts the alcohol into another chemical called acetaldehyde; another enzyme cleverly called acetaldehyde dehydrogenase converts the acetaldehyde into acetate. And a third enzyme converts

Here, OFDM system is considered which include repetition code to enhance the wireless link performance with simplicity. Symbol error rate (SER) performance is evaluated using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and 16 qardature amplitude modulation (16 QAM) over generalized K fading channel. This channel model considers Nakagami m distribution to define multipath and gamma distribution to represent shadowing. Simulation results demonstrate that improved system performance can be achieved using repetition code in severely faded environment. A comparative study of coded and uncoded system is also given in this paper. Consequently, SER performance is improved with the increase in shape parameters. The author studied professional ethics and auditor independence at small and medium firms. The researcher compared ethics with values, and laid emphasis on the credibility as one of the most important ethics element (p. 306). The concept of auditor independence and ethics has significantly changed for the last century. There was a drastic move toward the neutrality in reporting. The main objective of research is to analyze two terms independence of mind and independence in appearance; and examine perceptions of independent auditors (pp. 307 308). The study is important because it investigates professional ethics as the key of quality assurance services. The researcher considered two problems of the study: shifts in regulations affect the auditors behavior, and changes in settings and culture of businesses (p. 305). Literature Review. The author used a systematic review of literature in the research. The researcher examined studies of Gill and Cosseral (1996), The Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants, and Guidance Note on Independence of Auditors to analyze the word independence in depth. The author stated that the term might bring a lot of confusion (p. 307). The term should emphasize that the professional is free from financial relationships.

Children who had underlying malignant tumors, infections, hematologic diseases, or other conditions that could alter organ size were excluded. All measured organs were sonographically normal. One dimension (Midclavicular Line Longitudinal Diameter MCLLD) was obtained for liver with ultrasonography. RESULTS MCLLD of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is no consensus on which measurement parameter is most sensitive for investigating the normal limits of organ dimensions. It is not practical to use the volumes of the liver.6 Midclavicular line is better than sagittal line because the left lobe of liver in particular differs in extension and size from person to person and with age but right lobe measurements are more consistent.2 In many studies, the lengths of the liver in the midclavicular and midsagittal planes were both measured, but they found better correlation between the measurement of the midclavicular plane and the body parameters.7 10 Thus an assessment in a single longitudinal axis is sufficient and is easier to use.2,6 Longitudinal hepatic diameter at midclavicular line is the most commonly applied and predominant clinical method of estimating liver size in routine diagnostic situations.7 Therefore, we chose to use only MCLLD for liver size measurement in our
