Role Of Food In The Elizabethan Era
THESIS STATEMENT: During the Elizabethan era various types of foods were eaten and extensive
details were added to these foods. Social classes also played a big role in what the rich or poor ate.
I. Elizabethan meals were eaten at a specific time during the day. Depending on the job, civilians ate at
different a time or place.
A. People of this era usually ate three meals a day which consisted of: breakfast, dinner, and supper.
1. Breakfast was eaten right after getting up in the morning. It was normally a small meal made up of
cold foods like leftovers, eggs, or bread and butter. But since breakfast was by definition eaten early,
those who did not rise early did not eat it.
2. Farmers would only go to church services on Sundays because ... Show more content on

I. Introduction
In light of the AUSFTA, Australia has significantly amended its copyright legislation to be more in
line with American copyright law. However, Australia has yet to adopt American style fair use
doctrine. In Australia, an otherwise infringing use of copyright material can only be fair if the dealing
was for one of five specified purposes. American fair use doctrine, in comparison, is more open ended
and not limited to a set of specific purposes. Rather, a test consisting of four non exhaustive factors is
applied on a case by case basis for determining whether an impugned use is fair . The first of the
fairness factors is the purpose and character of the use which essentially concerns whether the use is
transformative. The definition used by the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) is the use of
pre existing works to create something new, that is not merely a substitute for the pre existing work. In
some analyses, whether a use is transformative has become the key question in

Why Did The Constitution Guard Against Tyranny Dbq
How Did the Constitution Guard Against Tyranny?
In colonial times the Kings of England treated the colonists harshly. They were forced to house
soldiers, forbidden to trade with other countries, and mercenaries were sent by the king to control
them. The writers of the Constitution in 1787 called these acts tyranny. Tyranny is when an individual,
a few people, or a group of people such as a part of a government gains too much power over the lives
of the people. The Constitution had protections against tyranny. Federalism, the Separation of Powers,
and Checks and Balances are three ways it protected the young country from tyranny.
Federalism is one way the Constitution protects against tyranny. Federalism is how power is shared or
divided between the federal and state governments. According to Document A, the federal government
only has the power to conduct foreign relations but it does not have the power that the state has to
establish schools. By dividing the powers, federalism prevents tyranny. ... Show more content on

The United States government has three branches, Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. In Federalist
Paper #47, James Madison says ...the three great departments of power should be separate and
distinct. This means that the powers of the three governments should be separate and one branch
should not have all the power of the government. For example, the Legislative branch only makes the
laws, the Executive branch only enforces the laws, and the Judicial branch only determines if laws are
broken. The three branches have powers that are denied to the other so one branch does not have all
the power and therefore prevents

Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience And Ralph Waldo...
The transcendentalist movement of the early 19th century was one that altered American political,
philosophical and literary ideas for centuries to come. In fact, the transcendentalist movement is still
alive in the modern day: as seen in our societies focus on individualism, nature and sensibility. This
paper will discuss the ideas of transcendentalism through the work of Henry David Thoreau s Civil
Disobedience and Ralph Waldo Emerson s Self Reliance by comparing both works finding similarities
and differences between them. To truly understand the most important members of the
transcendentalist movement, it is first important to understand the basic foundations of their beliefs.
Transcendentalists believed that society and social institutions such as organized religion and political
parties corrupt the pureness of individuals. The guiding principle of transcendentalism, therefore, is
the belief that people are at their best when they are self reliant and independent. The central beliefs of
transcendentalism were in unity between nature and God, the presence of God in each individual.
These core beliefs generated others, particularly in individualism and in the self reliance extolled by
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Although Emerson and Thoreau are both
transcendentalist and share the same core beliefs, there are differences between them, which will be
discussed later in the essay. After analyzing each of their individual essays, I will then discuss the

The Chicago Board Of Education Meets
The Chicago Board of Education meets once a month to discuss issues relevant to Chicago Public
Schools, entertain public comments, and make policy and fiscal decisions. Often times the Board
meeting is held at Chicago Public Schools (CPS) central office at 10 a.m. However, both the timing
and location of the meeting on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 differed. The meeting was held at
Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy High School at 4:30 p.m. Gwendolyn Brooks is
located on the far south side of Chicago. Hosting the meeting at a CPS school has both positives and
negatives. By bolding the meeting at a school it allows for a less formal atmosphere in addition to
providing the opportunity to showcase some of the beautiful properties CPS possesses. However, this
particular school is not easily accessible by public transportation. This may cause a problem for some
stakeholders that would like to participate in the school board meeting. Furthermore, 4:30 in the
afternoon is an awkward time for a meeting as it is more difficult to find childcare during the evening
hours. Additionally, finding details regarding this meeting was not easy. After a search was conducted
on the CPS website, there was no mention of the board meeting. Once redirected to the Chicago Board
of Education Site, information regarding the location of the meeting was supplied. However there

The Reasons And Causes Of The Filipino American War
The Filipino American War was sparked by the unprovoked shooting of Filipino soldiers by American
sentries stationed in a suburb of Santa Mesa in February 1899. Pimentel (1999) describes on a hot,
humid night of Feb 4, 1899, American sentries patrolling the Manila suburb of Santa Mesa opened fire
on Filipino soldiers walking near a bridge over the San Juan River (Pimentel 1999. Pg. 1). The war
lasted from February 1899 until July 1902. The war was noted as one of the bloodiest conflicts in U.S.
history noted to have claimed over 250,000 lives (Pimentel 1999). The war lasted longer than the
Americans expected, moreover the war resulted in Filipino soldiers shifting to guerrilla warfare to
make up the lack of firepower. Pimentel (1999) describes, overwhelmed by superior American power,
the Filipinos shifted to guerrilla warfare. The strategy worked, but it also prompted U.S, commanders
to employ more brutal tactics against an elusive enemy that enjoyed popular support (Pimentel 1999.
Pg. 2). The Filipino soldiers were able to find support from the The Filipino people. Filipino people
were first colonized by the Spanish for over 300 years before being sold to America for 20 million
during the peace treaty signed in Paris on December 1898. Consequently, under the long control of the
Spanish gave way to the Filipino people craving their freedom from the Spanish and currently during

Eugenics History
Eugenics is the science of improving human population by controlling breeding. Eugenics principles
have been used since ancient rome and greece ever since plato suggested selective mating to produce a
guardian class . Modern Eugenic began in the early 20th century in the united kingdom It then spread
to the united states and most of europe . It was started by Sir Francis Galton after his cousin charles
darwin published The origin of species in 1859 on evolutionary biology he wanted to explain the
development of plants and animals and apply it to humans. Francis galton started researching the first
chapter on Variation under Domestication (animal breeding).Francis Galton dedicated his research to

started to try win support from the public and change opinions on Eugenics including the British
eugenics education society in 1907 and the american eugenics society in 1921. .At the time meany
country adopted eugenic policies meant to improve the genetic stock of their country s population by

eugenics. Negative Eugenics is improving the human race by eliminating or excluding people that are
deemed unfit . Eugenics is the idea that only the fit can reproduce and the people that were deemed
unfit should be sterilized. People deemed unfit would usually have mental or physical disabilities.

The Perseverance of The Cuban Swimmer
The Perseverance of The Cuban Swimmer Having a coach will help your persevere life s most
difficult challenges. The inspiring theme of The Cuban Swimmer is the perseverance of Margarita
Suarez as she swims from San Pedro to Catalina island. The source of her perseverance comes from
her father, Eduardo. Margarita s inspirational source is a integral part of the play, without it she
wouldn t have won the race and the play would have been undeniably hopeless. If it hadn t had been
for her perseverance she wouldn t have overcome the challenge she faced during the turning point of
the play. Having a coach in life will positively influence your character and your skills. Also, having a
coach doesn t necessarily mean that your playing on a field. A coach can be anyone from a role model
to a parent or guardian, a teacher, a pastor, a mentor, or sometimes even a best friend. One of the most
important things for a coach to have is influence, and more important than that is that the influence he
has on his players must be positive. As a leader, a coaches job is to better his players on and off of the
field. This is done by developing the character of his players through encouragement and helping them
understand that the game is more than just about winning. A good coach will always put the needs of
his players first before he considers himself as a factor. If a coach is successful his players will
develop a strong sense of self motivation. This helps by allowing the player to

The Problem Of Police Enforcement
A stranger has broken into your house while your family is home and the stranger plowed through
your bedroom door like Ray Lewis; you are lying in bed next to a night stand where you store your .45
what would you do? The probability of the average American possessing the skillset of remaining
composed under pressure is extremely low, and you would likely reach for the gun and pull the trigger.
Fortunately, you are the 492 in 493 (99.8%) United States citizens who have not been properly trained
to react in that situation, so you could pull the trigger and claim self defense. If you were the 1 in 493
(0.2%) United States citizens who have been trained to react in that situation, the media would dissect
the situation and gleefully inform the entire country of your misconduct. The people who have been
trained to react in that situation are police officers, whom have undergone heaps of scrutiny
throughout the course of United States history most exclusively the past decade. As a country, we
categorize law enforcement in two distinct categories: brutal or helpful; we fail to consider similarities
between the two categories, and we ultimately fail to classify law enforcement as humans. The
philosophy of establishing a distinct code of law dates back to the genesis of America. The
constitution established three branches of government that parallels the law code legislative,
executive, and judicial; our forefathers found it essential to institute law enforcement through the

people; a social, moral, and ethical way in American history today. I have found two; the first is on
Martin Luther King, who had a mission in his life for preaching for peace and also marched in
Washington to come together as one race in a united front (Cyr, A. I., 2015). He was a Southern
Christian, black African man, who preached to stop the racial relations and end the violence back then;
with his speech, I have a dream. It was in the 1960s when this was happening. At that time, the

The outrage of our health care system has been in progressive stages of chaos and turmoil. First,
example the democrats in congress passed a patient protection law for the low income care, and it

Third Grade Classrooms and Foldables
Introduction Good educators, especially in the lower levels of education, are always looking for
effective ways to improve students learning and interest in subjects that may not be as appealing. Any
activity that promotes reading and encourages critical thinking is especially valued by teachers
(Angus, 1993). One of the key developments promoted by Zike is the use of Foldables in the
classroom (2007). These are three dimensional hands on manipulative/graphic organizers. Foldables
can quickly organize, display and arrange data making it easier for students to grasp concepts,
theories, processes, facts, and ideas, or to sequence events as outlined in the content standards. They
can result in student made study guides that are compiled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Results and Conclusions Initially the pretest scores of the two groups were compared to ensure that
they had equivalent attitudes toward social studies, which they were. The changes in scores from
pretest to posttest for each group (Lecture/Worksheet and Foldables) were then compared using a
paired samples t test. Casteel researched that the Lecture/Worksheet group had a .69 point mean gain
from pretest to posttest, which was not statistically significant, while the Foldables group had a 2.67
point mean gain from pretest to posttest, which was statistically significant (2006). This study was
designed to compare the effectiveness of two teaching methods (Lecture/Worksheet and Foldables).
The Lecture/Worksheet and Foldables groups had equivalent pretest scores, meaning they were
equivalent in attitudes toward social studies at the beginning of the units. Only those taught with
Foldables had a significant increase from pretest to posttest on affective scores (Casteel, 2006). The
experimental data indicated that Foldables are a promising alternative to the traditional method of
Lecture/Worksheet. Using Foldables significantly improved students attitudes toward the material
(Zike, 2007). Additionally, teachers who participated in the study commented about the improvement
in attitudes when using the Foldables. Furthermore, several teachers

Cinderella Ate My Daughter By Peggy Orenstein
Cinderella Ate My Daughter by Peggy Orenstein
A Review of the Literature Growing up in today s society can be traumatizing for any child. When it
comes to growing up as a young girl, however, it can be downright devastating, but not only for the
child but the parent as well. There are so many decisions to be made when choosing how to raise your
child, assuring that you have instilled proper values to develop a healthy sense of self worth and
confidence. Upon reading the book Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Frontlines of
the New Girlie Girl Culture , by Peggy Orenstein, I was extremely captivated to absorb the opinions
that she had on raising a girl and all of the feminine influences that naturally surround her. The author
herself had stated right from the first page how she initially wished for the child in her womb was a
boy. My preliminary notion that joined this book to the course material was assumed before I even
began reading, as several obvious details it became apparent that the book for sure had to be about
gender roles and gender identity. The whole topic of princesses in the title, as well as the way the
books cover flaunted pink and shimmery glitter it was just a telltale sign to have gender specific ties.
That impression continued as I began reading the very first chapter boldly titled Why I Hoped for a
Boy . There were such forthright examples making it overly apparent that she, the author, would be
discussing the sexes, meaning girls vs.

The Freedom Writers And Erin Gruwell
The Freedom Writers Diary By: The Freedom Writers and Erin Gruwell
Genre: Nonfiction
Plot summary:
The first pages include a forward by Zlata Filipovic. She is a survivor from the war in Sarajevo, and
many call her the modern day Anne Frank . She talks about how the writers have affected her life, and
how they are an inspiration to many around the world. The students entries consist of how they do not
believe that Mrs. Gruwell will make it in their school. The students are deemed unteachable by the
school. Mrs. Gruwell, worked two jobs (one at a hotel and as a teacher) to provide books for her
students. The students read Zlata s diary and The Diary of Anne Frank . The class decides to do a

Mood:
The mood of this book is hopeful, because, it makes the reader feel as if they can change anything that
they don t agree with. In the book, the students spoke out about racism and they changed people s
views. They also spoke out about how they wanted to change their lifestyles, and become better
people. The book, Freedom Writers Diary has a mood of hopeful, because it makes you feel as if you
can do anything.
Tone:
Since there are many authors in Freedom Writers Diary , There are different tones to different entries.
One entry, when the author is talking about his friend getting shot, the tone is shocked, that his friend
was shot, and nobody seemed to care. In other chapters, like the one when a girl is talking about how
she will be the first in her family to go to college, the tone is excited. Throughout the book, the tone is
mostly reflective, because the authors are reflecting on their past choices.
Irony:
The only irony that is in this book, is when many students are saying that Mrs.Gruwell will not last
more than a few weeks, but she ends up lasting multiple years.
Imagery:
The imagery in this book, is when the Freedom Writers stand in a circle in Washington D.C, to
commemorate those who were lost to a shooting. There is also imagery when the students stand
outside of the school, due to some students being killed.
Symbolism:
The symbolism of having visitors, (Zlata and Miep) is that there will be something

The Responsibility Of Child Soldiers
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall
have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their
jurisdiction. are words from the Thirteenth Amendment that was passed in 1865. However, is still
untrue around the world. One issue that is violating this amendment is child soldiers. Child soldiers
are a horrifying issue around the world that put the lives of many children at risk. One reason child
soldiers are such a huge problem is because they are forced to take part in many life threatening
conflicts. Another reason is because the children are brainwashed to do as the army tells them to.
To start, child soldiers are human rights concern because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to one site, they are small, so they can be transported in large numbers yet big enough to
handle lightweight weapons as well as heavy enough to set off landmines. They also have no real
sense of fear, are cheap and expendable, and when indoctrinated young enough, they can be more
loyal and ferocious than adults. (Macleans 1) However, when getting the children to follow orders,
they are injured and stripped of their normal lives and made to believe what the armies want them to
think. Many times, they suffer from psychological damage and if brought back to their families, they
can be very violent. (Telegraph 1) Having these soldiers are wrong since while they are still
developing, they are fed wrong information and have their lives changed. To conclude, children may
be perfect for the job of a soldier, but the way they are treated is inhuman and children should not be
fighting adults battles. The use of child soldiers is an atrocious violation of the human rights. One
topic is that child soldiers are forced into extreme situations. The first reason is because they have to
fight in hazardous places. The second reason is because they have their thoughts manipulated while at
the military. This kind of treatment to children as young as 8 is unacceptable and and you can help
stop it. Raise awareness, spread the word, research the problem, protest it, raise money to stop this,

Stereotypes In Dances With Wolves
Shifting Perceptions in Dances With Wolves
In Kevin Costner s motion picture Dances With Wolves, a white veteran of the Civil War, John
Dunbar, ventures to the American frontier, where he encounters a tribe of Sioux Indians. At first, both
parties are quite wary and almost hostile to each other, but after some time, Dunbar realizes that they
have both grown to love and value each other as friends. As the movie critic Robert Ebert comments,
Dunbar possesses the one quality he needs to cut through the entrenched racism of his time: He is able
to look another man in the eye, and see the man, rather than his attitudes about the man. As Dunbar
discovers the culture of the Sioux, so do we. As the viewpoint of the hero gradually shifts ... Show

When the Native Americans are, therefore, initially portrayed in the film in stark contrast with Dunbar,
the audience is, not at all surprisingly, immediately biased against them. While Dunbar is noble and
upright, the Indians are wild and brutal; for example, they murder Dunbar s wagon driver Timmons in
a most violent and cruel way, by hacking him with knives and tomahawks. Their actions confirm
traditional views of Indians as bloodthirsty savages who kill for no better reason than the fact that
Timmons was ignorantly tending an open fire on their territory. Another case in point is when Dunbar
finds Stands With a Fist by the river, cutting herself with a knife. He immediately tries to help her and
gently returns her to the Sioux Indians. The Sioux, however, respond in a quite different manner;
instead of being grateful towards Dunbar, Wind in His Hair screams at him and fiercely snatches the
woman away from him by her hair. As a result, the audience feels indignation and anger at the Indians,
especially for treating its esteemed hero in such an apparently unjust and unwarranted manner.
As the movie progresses, however, the perception of Dunbar and, in turn, the perception of the
audience, towards the Sioux, begins to change. Several episodes reveal how Dunbar and the Indians
gradually begin to grow closer to each other. Firstly, each party ventures to visit the other and, thus,
tentatively

12 Years a Slave is a personal narrative written by Solomon Northup, and was later made into a film

He tells of his experiences as a slave and the way he was treated by different people, most of which
treated him poorly. His narrative is well written in every aspect, especially the details of events and

Clay Street Hill Railroad History
The first successful cable operated street railway was the Clay Street Hill Railroad, which opened on
August 2, 1873. The promoter of the line was Andrew Smith Hallidie, and the engineer was William
Eppelsheimer. The line involved the use of grip cars, which carried the grip that engaged with the
cable, towing trailer cars; the design was the first to use grips. The term grip became synonymous with
the operator. The line started regular service on September 1, 1873, and its success led it to become
the template for other cable car transit systems. It was a financial success, and Hallidie s patents were
enforced on other cable car promoters, making him wealthy. The next cable car line to open was the

location of Coit Tower. The attraction offered telescopes for the viewing public from which to observe
the wonders of the San Francisco Bay and a restaurant. On the roof was a time ball, clearly visible to
ships in the Bay. Every day at noon the ball was dropped so that ship s captains could set their

Allegory Of The Cave Comparison
Which pill would you take the red or the blue? Continue living a life you re comfortable with rather
than go out and seek the truth? If I had to make a decision I would definitely choose to find the truth
just like Neo. In the movie, The Matrix, there are two worlds. One of which is reality and the other is
the deceptive Matrix. There is a minimum amount of beings who know about the truth of the real
world like Dozer, Cypher, and Trinity (etc). Morpheus, the leader of the clan who experienced the real
world told Neo who was an ordinary man at the time that, The Matrix is the world pulled over your
eyes to prevent you from seeing the truth. He is referring to the truth of the real world. Many people
rather swim in a pool of lies than go out of their way to find the truth. ... Show more content on

They were tied to chains, and almost had no freedom of thought. They believed their own shadows
were actual beings with souls. The story teller claims that if the prisoners had the opportunity to
escape it would be painful for their eyes which were used to the darkness, to face the light. It would
also be as painful for their bodies which have been chained up for so long. To experience the real
world they would have to adapt into the reality, and it would be dreadful and, uncomfortable at first.
This story has about the same plot as that of the Matrix; it asserts that Once you have tasted the truth;
you won t ever want to go back to being ignorant. (Allegory of the Cave). The quote perfectly explains
the mindset of Neo and the rest of the characters in the movie who set out to find the truth no matter

I Am An Outsider Looking At The Organization As An Insider
I am an outsider looking at the organization as an insider due to commanding one of the battalions in
4th ABCT. This strength is also a weakness that can lure me into a false sense of comfort in a time
where action is desperately needs. Since my departure the unit has conducted a deployment to
Afghanistan and is in the final stage of the reintegration. My brigade is suffering from a lack of
mission commitment as a result of several different missions and minimal leadership involvement. In
developing a new path for the 4th ABCT the key is to examine the problem, then develop a new
vision, and finally use the Kotter s 8 Stage Model to anchor lasting improvement to the organization.
This situation presents an opportunity to my command to customize the unit to meet its challenges in
the future. Problems in a unit returning from deployment are nothing new, but the 4th ABCT is going
down a dangerous path if the situation is not course corrected. At the heart of the problem the unit is
suffering from a lack of mission commitment as a result of several different missions and minimal
leadership involvement. While deployed my new unit trained for one mission and then was divided up
once in country to carry out several missions to include a Security Force Advisor Team. Soldiers
trained on one set of task then were utilized completely differently. The unit feels betrayed by the
Army s last minute decision to align the unit towards this new mission only hurting commitment

Significant Difference Between The Spanish And New England...
In 1492, Columbus came to the New World along with fifty other Spanish men. Those men spread
Catholicism throughout the native population, as well as settling to form their own colonies. Year
later, settlers from New England began colonizing in the New World spreading beliefs of Puritanism
as well as forming an economy apart from the Old World. The role of religion and economy were
significantly different during the two different colonizations periods, while the treatment of the native
population was significantly similar.
The role of religion between the Spanish and New England colonies were significantly different due to
the conquistadors and salvation mentality in the Spanish, and the strong Puritan beliefs in the New
England colonists. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Spanish colonies the encomienda system setup slavery in the form of labor to the natives. In the
Spanish colonies, the natives were set under the encomienda system where the natives were used as
slaves for their protection, in return for their labor. The natives were also forced to undergo a
conversion in religion under this system. The Spanish soldiers believed natives were only fit to be
tortured and killed. If the natives did not convert, the Spanish would torture and kill natives. Similar to
the Spanish colonies encomienda system, the New England colonies had indentured servitude. During
the early settlements colonists were mostly friendly with the natives. Soon, in the colonies of Virginia
and Maryland, chattel slavery and indentured servitude amongst the natives were vast. The English
believed the natives were property and compared to animals. In indentured servitude the natives were
granted freedom by the English in return for their work, just how to the Spanish granted protection for
their labor. For instance, slaves were the main work force when it came to tobacco and sugar in the
northern New England colonies. Due to the longevity of the contract the natives were never granted
their headrights. On the other hand, in the colony of Pennsylvania the

The Causes And Factors Of The Mexican American War
The Causes and Factors of the Mexican American War
The extent through which the Southern desire for slavery was important in the casus belli against
Mexico, as were two other factors being the political fighting and upheaval of the time, and the threat
of foreign intervention by European powers namely, England.
Slavery as an issue was always at the forefront of national politics, whether we consider the Missouri
Compromise and the balance created of one state slave, and one state free, or the gag rule in Congress
which restricted the discussion of the very issue. However, in the Presidencies of John Tyler and
James Polk the main topic accompanying slavery was its expansion and none illustrated this more than
Texas. Texas although formally a state of Mexico, starting at the beginning of the century was being
flooded by migrants from the South, slave owning migrants who represented a trend of the time
illustrated by Document A which showed the gradual shift of slaves from the more condensed areas of
the Old South the fertile pastures of the West. This was all in search of land to grow cash crops, this
always was in the background of the Texas issue, Texas may have been a catalyst to speed the process
along but the process was on its merry way. Mexico was displeased at the large numbers of Protestant
slave owning Americans at their borders and although it called for no slaves within its borders the
calls went unheeded. Finally the newly elected President Santa Anna decided

The world of healthcare is always striving to improve practices and procedures. The nuclear medicine
world is no different. This article discuses many different parathyroid protocols. The article focuses on
single and dual tracer methods in order to determine which test is more accurate in localization of
parathyroid adenomas. The article also, attempts to determine if single or dual phase studies are more
accurate in localization of parathyroid adenomas. Having a parathyroid disorder can be a major
problem for many adults throughout the world. Primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common
cause of hypercalcemia in otherwise healthy adults (Caveny, Klingensmith, Wolfe, pp 104, 2012).

Adam Bain and the Price Momentum Strategy
ADAM BAIN AND THE PRICE MOMENTUM STRATEGY
In February 1995, Adam Bain, investment advisor in the London, Ontario branch of RBC Dominion
Securities Inc. (RBC DS), was considering whether or not to implement a price momentum strategy
for his clients. Trend and Cycle, DS s technical research department, had recently circulated a copy of
a study which described a simple price momentum model and referred to its startling results based on
back testing the strategy over a 15 year period. The Trend and Cycle group had long promoted the
importance of price momentum and relative strength to potential clients. Bain needs to determine
whether the proposed model was too good to be true or, if it did not look promising, how he would go

His client base had grown primarily due to referrals, often from Royal Bank branch managers. His
primary source of income was through commissions charged on products sold. For example, typical
stock commissions ranged from 1.5 to 2.5 percent depending on the size of the transaction.
Bain s clients portfolios included equities (both common and preferred) as well as fixed income
securities and small amounts of cash (typically parked on a short term basis before being allocated to
fixed income or equities). Typical portfolios were approximately 60% equities and 40% fixed income,
70% domestic and 30% international. Approximately one third of equity investments were through
mutual funds. Approximately 25% of client assets were included in tax sheltered Registered
Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs). As of 1991, Bain s clients were primarily over age 70. As of 1995,
his client base had evolved to become much younger, with a median age of around 50. his clients were
dominated by professionals.
Bain summed up his investment philosophy as follows:
I strive to provide my clients with the best possible investment advice and service by employing
proven investment strategies and techniques in order to achieve superior investment returns over the
long term. I keep my business simple and straightforward in order to ensure that clients understand

Eating Disorders Affecting Our Image of Beauty; Research...
When Looking at a well know published magazine like Vogue, Glamour, and Top Model, they all
show beautiful women with extraordinary beauty and amazing sense of style and fashion. But when
looking at the models, do they really resemble the average women reading these magazines that the
ads and articles are intended for? Women and men are going through great lengths hurting themselves
to achieve such figures that the magazines show as beautiful. These people suffer from eating
disorders are starving themselves or eating then purging to get rid of the food. These are serious and
isn t something that can simply be stopped by just eating a normal diet again. On the other side of the
spectrum there are people that have another type of eating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Composition and Dieting Behavior among Dancers . They discovered eating disorders among dancers
was common and a problem they struggle with. 23 dancers at the studio took the survey. The survey
was broken down asking question on diet habits, and other eating disorder symptoms. 22 said that they
constantly think about weight and shape. 18 of the dancers are afraid of weight gain. 11 said that they
have dieted to lose weight. 4 said they have vomited or have taken diet pills to get rid of weight. 20
have said that they have tried exercising to get rid of weight (Hidyah and Bariah). The information
presented shows that the dancers have conflicts with their bodies for reasons of their own. What s
important to notice from the data collected is the dancers have a set image that they see they should be

weight. None of the were diagnosed with an eating disorder but symptoms where present in the data
and should be made aware. A person doesn t just get this disorder. An eating disorder builds after an

Essay on Kite Runner-the Importance of Family
The Importance of Family The value of family seems to be obvious in every culture around the world.
After watching the film, Kite Runner and exploring other materials, it is rather noticeable that the
value of family is very important to the Afghan culture. The sense of family roots has driven many to
do things they otherwise would not have done. Families may be the primary motivators for some
people, either as heroic models or as people whom they fear to disappoint. Regardless of what one s
family turns out to be, family is still family. Many people will go to extreme measures to fulfill a duty
that involves family. It may be true that the bond between family members is stronger than any other
bond known to man. The value of family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At a very young age culture and our surroundings teach us that we must keep family close. The
thought of family unity many times will make or break a child. If home life is rough due to family
separation, the child will be greatly affected. Family ties run deep no matter what culture one is a part
of; it just seems to be more evident in the Afghan culture. In the Afghan culture, a dominant sense of
the primary importance of family causes children to want nothing more than to impress their parents.
To impress one s parents in any culture much less the Afghan culture may be one of the biggest most
proud moments of child s life. Such is true when the boys win the kite running competition. Amir
wants nothing more than to impress his father and keep the family name alive and strong. He feels as
if this was a way to redeem himself to his father. The importance of family in this situation stands out
and demonstrates how much the Afghan culture bases itself on family. It is obvious that Amir believes
that nothing is more important than his family. This value of family being first, which he learned at a
very young age, and making them the most important figures in one s life carries with Amir
throughout his whole life. He never forgets where his roots are and why they are there. Family was of
importance to Amir at a young age and he carried that mentality with him throughout his entire life.
The mentality that family comes first does not only apply to

After the ban of Tobacco in 1644 by the last Ming emperor Huaizhun the already addicted Chinese
people had to find something new to smoke and as opium was already smoked mixed together with
tobacco before the ban, many of the smokers changed to opium smoking itself or also Arsenic, that is
also a drug.
So as the Opium smoking was already widely spread across China, it was already slowly destroying
the health and the cohesion of the nation, but it was still a problem only within China.
Even though Chinese European trade already existed in the seventeenth century a law for the trade
was made 1757 and it was called the Canton System and the trade between China and all European
countries got reduced to only Canton or as it is today called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The complain made the Emperor angry as the English man broke several regulations within the
command structure and this lead to decreasing the Chinese European to only Canton.
The Canton System was basically about that the European merchants had to stay in Canton, that they
had to bargain with Chinese intermediaries and that their only payment are in silver bullion. The
outcome of the system was a negative trade balance for the European countries that traded with China
and also a huge silver loss for them, what in the end was also the reason for the East India Company to
start the trading of opium in China to compensate their loss.
When the trade monopoly of the East India Company started to end in 1834 and the United Kingdom
declared that they want a free trade in China, the Chinese authority ignored their wish to close the
Canton System.
So the East India Company had to illegally sell their Opium in China, illegally in the way that they
violated the Canton System as they did not only stay in Canton and also since they lost their trade
monopoly their selling of Opium lead to much more selling of Opium by various merchants, what in
the end lead to an overflowing amount of illegal Opium in

How To Write A Spanish Essay
Planning to write a Spanish essay because you think is easier? Spanish and English are two of the
most spoken languages in the world, which have differences and similarities in writing. Despite that
both languages use the same alphabet, Spanish has more difficult writing mechanics such as
punctuation rule, noun s gender and quantity, and verb conjugation that make writing an essay more
laborious. First, Spanish has a complicated punctuation rule because it uses diacritic acute (´) which
can change meaning of words if you don t use it, for example, the words vino (wine in English) and
vinó (past tense of the verb come in 3rd. person). In fact, if you don t use diacritic acute correctly, you
show your bad education in writing. Another Spanish s punctuation rule is the use of double
exclamation and question marks in the beginning and the end of sentences, for example, ¿Qué paso?,
¡Hola! In contrast, English doesn´t use diacritic acute in writing and uses one exclamation and
question mark in the sentence s ending, for instance, What happened?, Hi! ... Show more content on

  • 2. Role Of Food In The Elizabethan Era THESIS STATEMENT: During the Elizabethan era various types of foods were eaten and extensive details were added to these foods. Social classes also played a big role in what the rich or poor ate. I. Elizabethan meals were eaten at a specific time during the day. Depending on the job, civilians ate at different a time or place. A. People of this era usually ate three meals a day which consisted of: breakfast, dinner, and supper. 1. Breakfast was eaten right after getting up in the morning. It was normally a small meal made up of cold foods like leftovers, eggs, or bread and butter. But since breakfast was by definition eaten early, those who did not rise early did not eat it. 2. Farmers would only go to church services on Sundays because ... A Transformative Use Exception Would Not Harm The Legitimate Interests of Copyright Holders 8 VI. Transformative Use Should Be Covered Under Fair Use Rather Than a Stand Alone Exception 9 VII. Conclusion 10 I. Introduction In light of the AUSFTA, Australia has significantly amended its copyright legislation to be more in line with American copyright law. However, Australia has yet to adopt American style fair use doctrine. In Australia, an otherwise infringing use of copyright material can only be fair if the dealing was for one of five specified purposes. American fair use doctrine, in comparison, is more open ended and not limited to a set of specific purposes. Rather, a test consisting of four non exhaustive factors is applied on a case by case basis for determining whether an impugned use is fair . The first of the fairness factors is the purpose and character of the use which essentially concerns whether the use is transformative. The definition used by the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) is the use of pre existing works to create something new, that is not merely a substitute for the pre existing work. In some analyses, whether a use is transformative has become the key question in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Why Did The Constitution Guard Against Tyranny Dbq How Did the Constitution Guard Against Tyranny? In colonial times the Kings of England treated the colonists harshly. They were forced to house soldiers, forbidden to trade with other countries, and mercenaries were sent by the king to control them. The writers of the Constitution in 1787 called these acts tyranny. Tyranny is when an individual, a few people, or a group of people such as a part of a government gains too much power over the lives of the people. The Constitution had protections against tyranny. Federalism, the Separation of Powers, and Checks and Balances are three ways it protected the young country from tyranny. Federalism is one way the Constitution protects against tyranny. Federalism is how power is shared or divided between the federal and state governments. According to Document A, the federal government only has the power to conduct foreign relations but it does not have the power that the state has to establish schools. By dividing the powers, federalism prevents tyranny. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The United States government has three branches, Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. • 5. Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience And Ralph Waldo... The transcendentalist movement of the early 19th century was one that altered American political, philosophical and literary ideas for centuries to come. In fact, the transcendentalist movement is still alive in the modern day: as seen in our societies focus on individualism, nature and sensibility. This paper will discuss the ideas of transcendentalism through the work of Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience and Ralph Waldo Emerson s Self Reliance by comparing both works finding similarities and differences between them. To truly understand the most important members of the transcendentalist movement, it is first important to understand the basic foundations of their beliefs. Transcendentalists believed that society and social institutions such as organized religion and political parties corrupt the pureness of individuals. The guiding principle of transcendentalism, therefore, is the belief that people are at their best when they are self reliant and independent. The central beliefs of transcendentalism were in unity between nature and God, the presence of God in each individual. These core beliefs generated others, particularly in individualism and in the self reliance extolled by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Although Emerson and Thoreau are both transcendentalist and share the same core beliefs, there are differences between them, which will be discussed later in the essay. After analyzing each of their individual essays, I will then discuss the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Chicago Board Of Education Meets The Chicago Board of Education meets once a month to discuss issues relevant to Chicago Public Schools, entertain public comments, and make policy and fiscal decisions. Often times the Board meeting is held at Chicago Public Schools (CPS) central office at 10 a.m. However, both the timing and location of the meeting on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 differed. The meeting was held at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy High School at 4:30 p.m. Gwendolyn Brooks is located on the far south side of Chicago. Hosting the meeting at a CPS school has both positives and negatives. By bolding the meeting at a school it allows for a less formal atmosphere in addition to providing the opportunity to showcase some of the beautiful properties CPS possesses. However, this particular school is not easily accessible by public transportation. This may cause a problem for some stakeholders that would like to participate in the school board meeting. Furthermore, 4:30 in the afternoon is an awkward time for a meeting as it is more difficult to find childcare during the evening hours. Additionally, finding details regarding this meeting was not easy. After a search was conducted on the CPS website, there was no mention of the board meeting. Once redirected to the Chicago Board of Education Site, information regarding the location of the meeting was supplied. However there wasn t a visible start time or information regarding if the meeting was being broadcasted on a local ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Reasons And Causes Of The Filipino American War The Filipino American War was sparked by the unprovoked shooting of Filipino soldiers by American sentries stationed in a suburb of Santa Mesa in February 1899. Pimentel (1999) describes on a hot, humid night of Feb 4, 1899, American sentries patrolling the Manila suburb of Santa Mesa opened fire on Filipino soldiers walking near a bridge over the San Juan River (Pimentel 1999. Pg. 1). The war lasted from February 1899 until July 1902. The war was noted as one of the bloodiest conflicts in U.S. history noted to have claimed over 250,000 lives (Pimentel 1999). The war lasted longer than the Americans expected, moreover the war resulted in Filipino soldiers shifting to guerrilla warfare to make up the lack of firepower. Pimentel (1999) describes, overwhelmed by superior American power, the Filipinos shifted to guerrilla warfare. The strategy worked, but it also prompted U.S, commanders to employ more brutal tactics against an elusive enemy that enjoyed popular support (Pimentel 1999. Pg. 2). The Filipino soldiers were able to find support from the The Filipino people. Filipino people were first colonized by the Spanish for over 300 years before being sold to America for 20 million during the peace treaty signed in Paris on December 1898. The inspiring theme of The Cuban Swimmer is the perseverance of Margarita Suarez as she swims from San Pedro to Catalina island. The source of her perseverance comes from her father, Eduardo. Margarita s inspirational source is a integral part of the play, without it she wouldn t have won the race and the play would have been undeniably hopeless. One of the most important things for a coach to have is influence, and more important than that is that the influence he has on his players must be positive. As a leader, a coaches job is to better his players on and off of the field. This is done by developing the character of his players through encouragement and helping them understand that the game is more than just about winning. Third Grade Classrooms and Foldables Introduction Good educators, especially in the lower levels of education, are always looking for effective ways to improve students learning and interest in subjects that may not be as appealing. Any activity that promotes reading and encourages critical thinking is especially valued by teachers (Angus, 1993). One of the key developments promoted by Zike is the use of Foldables in the classroom (2007). These are three dimensional hands on manipulative/graphic organizers. Results and Conclusions Initially the pretest scores of the two groups were compared to ensure that they had equivalent attitudes toward social studies, which they were. The changes in scores from pretest to posttest for each group (Lecture/Worksheet and Foldables) were then compared using a paired samples t test. Casteel researched that the Lecture/Worksheet group had a .69 point mean gain from pretest to posttest, which was not statistically significant, while the Foldables group had a 2.67 point mean gain from pretest to posttest, which was statistically significant (2006). This study was designed to compare the effectiveness of two teaching methods (Lecture/Worksheet and Foldables). The Lecture/Worksheet and Foldables groups had equivalent pretest scores, meaning they were equivalent in attitudes toward social studies at the beginning of the units. Only those taught with Foldables had a significant increase from pretest to posttest on affective scores (Casteel, 2006). The experimental data indicated that Foldables are a promising alternative to the traditional method of Lecture/Worksheet. Using Foldables significantly improved students attitudes toward the material (Zike, 2007). Upon reading the book Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Frontlines of the New Girlie Girl Culture , by Peggy Orenstein, I was extremely captivated to absorb the opinions that she had on raising a girl and all of the feminine influences that naturally surround her. The author herself had stated right from the first page how she initially wished for the child in her womb was a boy. My preliminary notion that joined this book to the course material was assumed before I even began reading, as several obvious details it became apparent that the book for sure had to be about gender roles and gender identity. The whole topic of princesses in the title, as well as the way the books cover flaunted pink and shimmery glitter it was just a telltale sign to have gender specific ties. That impression continued as I began reading the very first chapter boldly titled Why I Hoped for a Boy . There were such forthright examples making it overly apparent that she, the author, would be discussing the sexes, meaning girls vs. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In other chapters, like the one when a girl is talking about how she will be the first in her family to go to college, the tone is excited. However, is still untrue around the world. One issue that is violating this amendment is child soldiers. Child soldiers are a horrifying issue around the world that put the lives of many children at risk. According to one site, they are small, so they can be transported in large numbers yet big enough to handle lightweight weapons as well as heavy enough to set off landmines. They also have no real sense of fear, are cheap and expendable, and when indoctrinated young enough, they can be more loyal and ferocious than adults. (Macleans 1) However, when getting the children to follow orders, they are injured and stripped of their normal lives and made to believe what the armies want them to think. Many times, they suffer from psychological damage and if brought back to their families, they can be very violent. (Telegraph 1) Having these soldiers are wrong since while they are still developing, they are fed wrong information and have their lives changed. To conclude, children may be perfect for the job of a soldier, but the way they are treated is inhuman and children should not be fighting adults battles. The use of child soldiers is an atrocious violation of the human rights. One topic is that child soldiers are forced into extreme situations. The first reason is because they have to fight in hazardous places. The second reason is because they have their thoughts manipulated while at the military. • 17. Stereotypes In Dances With Wolves Shifting Perceptions in Dances With Wolves In Kevin Costner s motion picture Dances With Wolves, a white veteran of the Civil War, John Dunbar, ventures to the American frontier, where he encounters a tribe of Sioux Indians. At first, both parties are quite wary and almost hostile to each other, but after some time, Dunbar realizes that they have both grown to love and value each other as friends. As the movie critic Robert Ebert comments, Dunbar possesses the one quality he needs to cut through the entrenched racism of his time: He is able to look another man in the eye, and see the man, rather than his attitudes about the man. As Dunbar discovers the culture of the Sioux, so do we. As the viewpoint of the hero gradually shifts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the Native Americans are, therefore, initially portrayed in the film in stark contrast with Dunbar, the audience is, not at all surprisingly, immediately biased against them. While Dunbar is noble and upright, the Indians are wild and brutal; for example, they murder Dunbar s wagon driver Timmons in a most violent and cruel way, by hacking him with knives and tomahawks. Their actions confirm traditional views of Indians as bloodthirsty savages who kill for no better reason than the fact that Timmons was ignorantly tending an open fire on their territory. Another case in point is when Dunbar finds Stands With a Fist by the river, cutting herself with a knife. He immediately tries to help her and gently returns her to the Sioux Indians. The Sioux, however, respond in a quite different manner; instead of being grateful towards Dunbar, Wind in His Hair screams at him and fiercely snatches the woman away from him by her hair. As a result, the audience feels indignation and anger at the Indians, especially for treating its esteemed hero in such an apparently unjust and unwarranted manner. As the movie progresses, however, the perception of Dunbar and, in turn, the perception of the audience, towards the Sioux, begins to change. Several episodes reveal how Dunbar and the Indians gradually begin to grow closer to each other. Firstly, each party ventures to visit the other and, thus, tentatively ... The Causes And Factors Of The Mexican American War The Causes and Factors of the Mexican American War The extent through which the Southern desire for slavery was important in the casus belli against Mexico, as were two other factors being the political fighting and upheaval of the time, and the threat of foreign intervention by European powers namely, England. Slavery as an issue was always at the forefront of national politics, whether we consider the Missouri Compromise and the balance created of one state slave, and one state free, or the gag rule in Congress which restricted the discussion of the very issue. However, in the Presidencies of John Tyler and James Polk the main topic accompanying slavery was its expansion and none illustrated this more than Texas. Texas although formally a state of Mexico, starting at the beginning of the century was being flooded by migrants from the South, slave owning migrants who represented a trend of the time illustrated by Document A which showed the gradual shift of slaves from the more condensed areas of the Old South the fertile pastures of the West. This was all in search of land to grow cash crops, this always was in the background of the Texas issue, Texas may have been a catalyst to speed the process along but the process was on its merry way. Spanish and English are two of the most spoken languages in the world, which have differences and similarities in writing. Despite that both languages use the same alphabet, Spanish has more difficult writing mechanics such as punctuation rule, noun s gender and quantity, and verb conjugation that make writing an essay more laborious. First, Spanish has a complicated punctuation rule because it uses diacritic acute (´) which can change meaning of words if you don t use it, for example, the words vino (wine in English) and vinó (past tense of the verb come in 3rd. person). In fact, if you don t use diacritic acute correctly, you show your bad education in writing. Another Spanish s punctuation rule is the use of double exclamation and question marks in the beginning and the end of sentences, for example, ¿Qué paso?, ¡Hola!
