How The Other Half Lives Essay
Writing an essay on "How The Other Half Lives" can be quite challenging due to the depth and
complexity of the topic. It requires a thorough understanding of the historical context, social
dynamics, and the impact of urbanization and industrialization on society during the late 19th
and early 20th centuries.
To craft a compelling essay, one must delve into Jacob Riis's groundbreaking work and analyze
his documentation of the living conditions of the impoverished in New York City. This involves
not only summarizing his observations but also critically examining his methods, biases, and the
implications of his work on societal perceptions and reforms.
Furthermore, addressing the broader themes of poverty, inequality, and urban development
requires extensive research and analysis of secondary sources to provide context and support
arguments. Additionally, navigating through the ethical considerations of representing
marginalized communities and avoiding stereotypes adds another layer of complexity to the
writing process.
Overall, writing an essay on "How The Other Half Lives" demands meticulous research, critical
thinking, and empathetic understanding. It involves grappling with multifaceted issues and
presenting nuanced arguments that reflect a deep engagement with the subject matter.

The Danger Of Cyber Attacks On Power Plants
The danger of cyber attacks on power plants are something that needs to be looked
at closely to avoid costly deadly incidents. Cybersecurity has become a vital
component of our world today and it needs to evolve fast to keep up in its
protection from the outside. Cybersecurity protects us from unauthorized
shutdowns, break ins, financial and social ruin. We live in a world that has
become completely reliant on computers for everything. They are able to cause
chaos and even shutdown nuclear centrifuges, air defense systems, and electrical
grids. (Hathaway, Crootof, Levitiz, Nix, Nowlan, Perdue Spiegel, 2012) Cyber
attacks are more common today due to the increase capability of technology.
Important information along with every aspect of people s lives are kept on
computers or cell phones which are vulnerable at all times. An example of this would
be the leaked snapchat photos of celebrities, stolen identities and unauthorized access
from an outside computer into a power plant. In New York State we have four
nuclear powerplants. These nuclear power plants contribute to the economy, society
and the environment. The Nuclear power plants are Entergy s Fitzpatrick in Scriba

Cyclohexane Lab
Laboratory 8: Distribution Constant of Iodine Between Cyclohexane and Water
Objective: The objective of the experiment was to determine the distribution
coefficient (the equilibrium concentration ratio) of iodine between the immiscible
solvents water and cyclohexane. This experiment was a study of equilibrium. The
distribution coefficient will be derived from the data obtained by performing a
chemical analysis for iodine in the water layer.
Procedure: First, approximately 120 mL of aqueous iodine and 75 mL of sodium
thiosulfate was obtained. A buret was rinsed with several 2 3 mL portions of sodium
thiosulfate solution and then the buret was filled with the solution. Next, 10.0 mL of
iodine solution was measured in a graduated cylinder and transferred to a 250 mL
Erlenmeyer flask. A graduated cylinder... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A few crystals of potassium iodide was added to the flask and then swirled to
dissolve the solid potassium iodide. The volume of the liquid in the buret was
read. The liquid in the buret was titrated with the thiosulfate solution until the
brown color of iodine had disappeared. Afterward, 1 mL of starch solution and then
thiosulfate solution was added until the blue color of the starch iodine complex
disappeared. The volume of the liquid in the buret was read again. Also, a large
test tube was cleaned and dried. 50 mL of iodine solution was carefully measured
with a 25 mL graduated cylinder. Next, 5.0 mL of cyclohexane was measured and
added to the graduated cylinder. The test tube was stoppered with a rubber stopper.
The mixture was shook for one minute at first, then for about five minutes. The
process was repeated, where the 50 mL of iodine solution in a 25 mL graduated
cylinder was obtained, and then a second 50 mL of iodine solution and 8.0 mL of
cyclohexane was added. Next, the cyclohexane layer was removed with a Pasteur
pipet from the first test tube into a beaker. In addition, 25.0 mL of the water layer

Daesh: A Global Enemy The world is at war. You ask with who? Terrorism, to be
more specific though they are called The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
They have a few other names as well, The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
(ISIL) and Daesh. I will choose to call them Daesh in this piece because these
terrorists find it insulting. The reason for this is that Daesh an acronym for ISIS in
Arabic. This acronym though sounds exactly like the Arabic word dais, which
means something that crushes or tramples. In recent months many Arabs and
Western leaders, including Secretary of State John Kerry, prefer to call it Daesh,
the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State. But Islamic State members hate the term
because in Arabic, the pronunciation is close to a word that can be variously
translated as to crush or bigot who imposes his will on others (Reid, 2). Daesh do
not want this title and have threatened to cut out the tongues of people who use it.
Daesh are a product of instability in the Syrian and Iraq region plus a Syrian civil
war. Unfortunately, America is greatly at fault for the instability in Iraq and helped
fund the Syrian rebels, so you could say the U.S. helped create them. Daesh s goal
is to start a religious war. They want the world to fear Islam and want them to hate it.
They showed us exactly what they were capable of in Paris France. The world needs

When a child is born, it is like a blank piece of paper ready to absorb anything and
everything that they possibly can. From birth they take in the light, the sounds, and

that is now this new being. Mothers will continue to worry for the rest of their child

My Interest in the Study of Law
I have a dream...Here by starting with the title of Martin Luther King s Historical
Speech. My dream, my ambition is to be the person who brings down the entire law
system in my country to simplicity where everyone should be able to understand the
law.
I believe in this profession very much because this is the only profession which can
bring unwavering transformation in the society. I strongly believe it is not about
simply fighting opponents in the court room, it is all about fighting for the justice
My desire in law ignited from a fascination with resolving conflict and the
important contribution it makes to our society. As being a one of the person who
witness the sacrifice of Tarek al Tayeb Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian street
vendor who set himself on fire in protest of the seizing of his wares where his act
became a catalyst for the Tunisian Revolution and the wider Arab Spring, I strongly
believe as young mind, I can do wonders and the profession which can inspire me to
relish my dreams for community is law.
I became my secondary school top student by scoring 12A s in my SPM National
Examination. Besides education, I have some interest in sports too. I played cricket
for my school since Form 1 till Form 5. At the age of 17, I became my school cricket
team captain. Since playing chess is my passion, I represented my school for chess
competition too. The game of chess has enhance my critical thinking skills and

Counter Terrorism Alternatives
In today s day and age, the fear of terrorism is not only a common sentiment, but is
also a rising subject of debate. In order to keep troops out of harm s way, the United
States has looked for alternate means of combatting terrorist organizations. Since
September 11, 2001 the United States has relied heavily on its men and women in
uniform to prevent terrorism abroad. Technology of today and the use of intelligence
offer the United States alternate means of addressing terrorism. For instance, drone
strikes were called by former US CIA director Leon Panetta, the only game in town
in term of confronting or trying to disrupt the Al Qaeda leadership (ODLE, 2013).
With the use of typology, socioeconomic assistance, drones, diplomatic engagement
and enhanced airline security services, the use of military force is not the only way
to prevent terrorism.
If our country wants to never send another son or daughter to war then we must first
understand who the terrorists are. Former President George Bush said we fight
against poverty because hope is an answer to terror (Lee 2011). On the other hand,
there are studies that say the opposite, that terrorism is not related to poverty. Poverty
and education are very important factors of what violence occurs. The lower the
poverty and education the increased chances for violence.

O Connor was best known for her short stories, which appeared in several

Mexican-American War Dbq
The southern desire to expand slavery was a major cause of the Mexican American
War, but there were other causes as well. The war started on April 25, 1846, and
ended on February 2, 1848, with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In
that treaty, Mexico ceded Texas with the Rio Grande boundary, New Mexico
, and
California to the United States. The desire to expand slavery in the south was
perhaps the largest cause of the Mexican American War, because southerners were in
favor of Manifest Destiny and believed that the expansion of slavery was necessary
to keep the slave trade alive in the U.S. Internal political conflicts were another cause
of the Mexican American War. Also, the fear that Texas
could be claimed by Britain or
France or that it would be uncontrollable if independent was another cause of the war.

Peace As A Concept Of The Fundamental Problems Faced
By...
Peace as a concept is seen through the lens of the fundamental problems faced by the
world today: war, armed conflict and political violence. By insinuation, peace itself is
understood predominantly as a negative concept, or as the absence of these
phenomena (Atack, 2009).
Martin Luther King said that True peace is not merely the absence of some negative
force tension, confusion or war; it is the presence of some positive force justice,
good will and brotherhood (King, 1957). Indeed, peace should focus on the positive
social and political phenomena such as integrity, equality and wellbeing. In order to
create a peaceful world, humans have to strive for positive peace, a condition
brought about by establishing standards of justice, human rights, and sustainable
development in beloved communities (Harris, 1996, p. 386). Gandhiji too described
his ideas of peace with a focus on the positive, according to him peace includes:
(i) Peace implies the capacity to live together in harmony.
(ii) The creation of non violent social systems, i.e., a society free from structural
violence.
(iii) The absence of exploitation and injustice of every kind.
(iv) International cooperation and understanding.
(v) Ecological balance and conservation.
(vi) Peace of mind, or the psycho spiritual dimension of peace. (NCERT, 2006)
These positive views of peace lead us beyond the limited negative associations the
notion is centered around. It is important to understand that the concept

Elizibethan Religious Settlement Essay
Elizabethan Religious Settlement
The Elizabethan Religious Settlement was Elizabeth I s response to the religious
divisions created over the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I. This
response, described as The Revolution of 1559 ,[1] was set out in two Acts of the
Parliament of England. The Act of Supremacy of 1559 re established the Church of
England s independence from Rome, with Parliament conferring on Elizabeth the title
Supreme Governor of the Church of England, while the Act of Uniformity of 1559 set
out the form the English church would now take, including the establishment of the
Book of Common Prayer.

The Act of Uniformity 1558, which required the population to attend Sunday
service in an Anglican church, at which a new version of the Book of Common
Prayer was to be used, passed by only three votes.[5] The Bill of Uniformity was
more cautious than the initial Reformation Bill. It revoked the harsh laws
proposed against Roman Catholics, it removed the abuse of the Pope from the
litany and kept the wording that allowed for both a subjective and objective belief
in the Real Presence in the Communion. After Parliament was dismissed, Elizabeth,
along with Cecil, drafted what are known as the Royal Injunctions, 1559. These
were additions to the settlement and largely stressed some continuity with the
Catholic past: ministers were ordered to wear the surplice; wafers, as opposed to
ordinary baker s bread, were to be used as the bread at Communion. There had been
opposition to the settlement in the shires, which for the most part were largely
Roman Catholic, so the changes are often said to have been made in order to allow

The Influence Of Cartoons In Nazi Germany
A picture is worth a thousand words . This conventional and hackneyed clichГ©
nevertheless holds an essential truth that applies to images circulated in society. Not
only do pictures express words, but they also convey opinions, stereotypes, and
negativity. The dissemination of images feeds the minds of observers, and inevitably
molds the opinions of viewers. Cartoonists are aware of this knowledge and are able
to channel the importance of this saying to deliver messages about situations, groups
of people, or historical events. They hold the power to influence society with the
drawings they produce and the additive features they incorporate into their cartoons.

Three areas of weakness in my writing include the use of redundant information,
frequent use of passive voice, and lack of being concise and straight to the point.
The document titled Personal Narrative depicts a use of passive voice. In this
document passive voice is apparent more than once and therefore, shows a
weakness that needs to be corrected in the future. I plan to begin to use less passive
voice and substantially more active voice in order to better engage a reader and

my past literary works illustrate a weakness in being concise. In Persuasive Essay,

proposal of such laws. Business owners presiding over such establishmentsas bars and

to help protect the patrons of businesses that currently allow smoking inside of their

Angela Vicario Essay
MГЎrquez uses the character of Angela Vicario to show the power women can
possess over the men in their lives. Angela Vicario is arguably the most powerful
character in the novel, as she is the one who tells her brothers that it was Santiago
who took her virginity, which consequently sets the entire plot of the story in motion.
After Angela is returned by Bayardo San RomГЎn to her family due to the fact that
she is not a virgin, when her brothers ask who it was who took her virginity, Angela
nailed [Santiago s name] to the wall with her well aimed dart, like a butterfly with

Santiago is also referred to as a butterfly, a very fragile creature, with no will or say
in what happens to it. This insinuates that even if he was to try, Santiago Nasar
would never be able to free himself from the fate Angela s words set for him. This
goes directly against the social norms of the time, in which Santiago, the wealthy
man, should be able to control Angela, the poor woman. Angela s statement that it
was Santiago who took her virginity also exercises a certain control over her
brothers. In the trial, Pablo and Pedro declared that they would have done it again a
thousand times over for the same reason (MГЎrquez 48). Even though they did have
their own free will in committing the murders, Pablo and Pedro did not question their
decision to murder Santiago in defense of Angela s honor. By making the accusation,
Angela is controlling her brothers as well, as it is clear that they will end up doing
something to protect their sister s purity. Whether Angela intentionally wanted
Santiago to end up dead or not, it is still clear that at this point in the novel, she is
exercising a control over Santiago, Pablo, and
The Federalist Papers
Introduction
The Federalist Papers present a series of essays written by James Madison,
Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay. This volume of eighty five essays, written
between October 1787 and May 1788, is perhaps the most famous, and at the same
time the most important newspaper column ever published. These essays are
considered to be among the most important documents of the Founding period,
together with the Constitution and Civil Rights Act. In these essays the authors
provided facts and justification for the Constitution, with also raising and discussing
some of the most important political issues of the time. The sole purpose for writing
the essays was to convince people of the State of New York to ratify the U.S.
Constitution. People of New York and its political leaders were strongly against the
Constitution and they firmly opposed new government. The main reason for that is
the fact that the State of New York gain independence under the Articles of
Confederation and was becoming rich trough the trade. The citizens of this state
believed that they have no interest in ratifying the Constitution and joining the Union.
The writers of The Federalist Papers were very concerned that because of New York
s reluctance and decided to take the matter into their hands and came all the efforts in
order to change their minds. They were very well aware of the relationship between
human nature and popular government. Hamilton, Madison and Jay were
apprehensive of the ethics of the

diversity in leadership. Being able to effectively communicate with co workers and

The Pros And Cons Of The Juvenile Justice System
Blended sentencing laws which give courts discretion in some cases to impose
juvenile and/or adult sentences on young offenders became popular during the
1990s as a means of broadening the spectrum of available sanctions. These laws
variously allow courts to impose: 1. An adult or a juvenile sentence; 2. Both a
juvenile and an adult sentence; or 3. A sentence that exceeds the normal limit of
juvenile court jurisdiction. Since 2002, Ohio has provided a blended sentencing
alternative for designated serious youth offenders, who receive both a juvenile and
an adult sentence. The Ohio sentencing alternative was modeled on Minnesota s
blended sentencing alternative, referred to as Extended Juvenile Jurisdiction (EJJ).
Under this system, the suspended adult system sentence may be imposed if the
offender does not comply with the terms of the juvenile court sentence. The
Minnesota and Ohio alternatives are sometimes referred to as a last chance for
young offenders to remain in the juvenile justice system. Both states have retained
the traditional option of transfer to adult court for serious juvenile offenders.
Researchers who have studied how prosecutorial decisions are made under these
systems generally assume that prosecutors use a two step process whereby they first
decide whether a particular case involving a juvenile defendant will be prosecuted in
juvenile court or motioned for a specialized processing track. In the second stage,
prosecutors decide whether

difficult community. Thematically, it highlights the already difficult nature of being
black in modern America, while simultaneously showing the hardship of also being
gay in said tough community. The film is comprised into three acts surrounding the
development of the protagonist, Chiron (in order of acts: Alex R. Hibbert, Ashton
Sanders, and Trevant Rhodes). Following him as he struggles with his own sexuality.
Consequentially, each act circles back to Chiron at a local beach, which for him, is...

The blocking in this scene is also a foreshadow for the rest of the movie. In the
beginning, Chiron is scared and unsure of who he is, turning to the help of others
like Juan and his girlfriend, Teresa. However, after trial and tribulation, Chiron learns
how to swim on his own. He slowly starts understanding how to cope with his
sexuality even if he s not accepted. And unfortunately, for most of the film, Chiron is
subjected to the sad realities that engulf everyone around him.
As expected, this happy scene is cut short as Chiron is dropped off at home to find
his mother with drugs and a stranger in the house. The scene is meant to immediately
draw the viewer back to the real world, the one Chiron has grown up in. In actuality,
Chiron can t just escape the situation he was born into. The mise ГЁn scene used in
this moment is meant to demonstrate how the mother is quickly losing grasp of a
happy life; trying to escape their reality by any means necessary. The blocking of
Paula portrays her as anxious and angry, grabbing what appears to be drugs from
her dining table. The lighting is also dark and the house is dirty, reinforcing the idea
that her life is slipping away. This is just one of many situations in which Chiron is
snapped back into reality after feeling accepting for who he is.
Act two cuts to Chiron as a high schooler. Like before, his quiet nature seems to get

Educational Leadership Philosophy Statement
I always thought I would be a teacher and I would make differences in lives and it
would be the greatest experience in the world for me, yet being a teacher wasn t
enough, I had a need to expand my education. I decided that perhaps I needed a
new career, however, I felt certain education remained my passion. I began to
explore new areas of education and I realized I still want to be a member of a
classroom, a school and curriculum. I aspire to guide those leading our classrooms.
Being an Educational Leader is where I have chosen to land. Educational leadership
will often bring me back to the classroom, helping teachers, coaching students and
planning curriculum. A master s degree in Educational Leadership will deliver a

A Study By Schrader ( 2012 ) Examined Osteoarthritis And...
A study by Schrader (2012) examined osteoarthritis and entheseal remodeling at
Tombos Nubia, after the Egyptian New Kingdom colonization (1550 1069 BCE).
The author used skeletal remains from the colonial town Tombos as a way to
compare activity patterns during Egypt s colonial expansion into Nubia. Many
Egyptian researchers vary on how Egyptian colonial policies impacted Nubian
inhabitants. Some believe that the local populace was forced to meet Egyptian
tributes, which included slaves, goods, gold, and grain (Schrader, 2012:61). While
others believe that there were positive interactions between the two groups, which
included minimal tributes and the ability of Nubians to hold onto cultural values
(Schrader, 2012:62). Schrader s research focused on entheseal changes and
osteoarthritis in the skeletal remains found at Tombos, in an effort to understand how
Nubian activity levels altered. The author used entheses, as a way of measuring
musculoskeletal stress markers, and osteoarthritis to compare Tombos population
(Schrader, 2012:62). Both conditions are impacted by the sex, age, and body size of
an individual; along with environmental factors and genetic predispositions
(Schrader, 2012:62). Even though neither of these conditions allow us to understand
know exactly what an individual did while they were alive, they will offer up certain
information about the population. Such as if the individual worked as a manual
laborer or in a less physically demanding position
Gender And Sex Is Not Considered Fashionable For A Boy
On numerous occasions, I have been told that I am recognized as a female but my
behavior is unladylike and/or the way I dress is not considered fashionable for a
boy. I question why people think this way. In addition, I wonder what defines a
woman that would suggest that my behavior and dress. Well, I have concluded that
society creates the norms that define women and individuals classify genderand sex
according to these norms. For many years, feminist have advocated that sex and
gender are subjective based on the conditions of the social order around them. I
would agree with them that a person s knowledge is based on his or her structured
environment. Our setting classifies ideas of gender and sex by observing a person s
behavior and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To support these claims, I will be discussing several feminists, such as Anne Fausto
Sterling, and sexologists John Money and Anke Ehrhardt examining the difference
between gender and sex. Simone de Beauvoir and Monsieur Benda identify the
subject of women being marked as other inferior to men. Loraine Code talks about
the influence and conditioning of one s knowledge. As well as information from the
Combahee River Collective informing one who reads about the hardships of black
feminists.
According to Anne Fausto Sterling (2000) her major claims is that labeling
someone a man or a woman is a social decision. In the beginning of the article she
introduces a female Olympian, Maria Patino, failing to pass a sex test because a Y
chromosome was indicated (Fausto Sterling, 2000, pp. 1 2). Drawing attention to
this story provides an example how sex is created through standards. To support
this idea she introduces sexologists John Money and Anke Ehrhardt theory about
the difference between gender and sex. They argue that gender is the internal
conviction as well as behavior that one is either a male or female and sex refers to
the physical traits (Fausto Sterling, 2000, p. 3). This reinforces the idea that gender
and sex is assembled based on social order around them creating limited awareness.
When the text mentions gender is expressed as internal conviction and behavior
implying it is established on observation on a personal level. On the other hand, sex is
Literary Analysis of The Gift of the Magi
Literary Analysis of The Gift of the Magi The twists and turns of the plot as it
unfolds within O. Henry s The Gift of the Magi are what simply captivate the
reader in such a short amount of pages. The story of Jim and Della on a cold
Christmas Eve at the turn of 20th century America is centered around what is
remarkably relevant to what many readers have experienced in their own lives; the
inevitable stresses, sacrifices, and joys of the holiday season. Strapped for cash and

her deep passion for him, we are immediately introduced to the initial situation at

The conclusion to this story is the narrator s final paragraphs were he relates the
couple to the Magi and praises Jim and Della of being the wisest givers of all,
contrary to popular belief. The comparison O. Henry makes between the story of
Jim and Della and that of the Magi is rather relevant as the Magi were the ones who
are credited with being the origins of the giving nature of the Christmas season. In
this story, we see a man and a woman so blinded by love that they are willing to
make ultimate sacrifices for the happiness of the other. Similar to the Magi, Della and
Tim put each other before themselves and through their generosity and considerable
lengths they both went to achieve that generosity is something more admirable than
any materialistic gift they could ever offer each other, thus making the uselessness
of their gifts irrelevant. This story is a story that can touch any person that has had
to gone through a heavy sacrifice or gave up something they so covet in order to
enlighten someone else, especially during the holiday seasons. It is a short narrative
that magnifies the intangible value of sentimentality and belittles the importance of
physical offerings. Jim and Della equally appreciate the efforts each other made to
make the other happy, despite
President Hoover Failure
The Great Depression was an abrupt decline in the supply and demand of goods and
services along with a meteoric rise in unemployment. President Herbert Hoover
thought there should not be too much government intervention and the crisis would
balance itself out after a while, but that was not the case. His attempts to aid the Great
Depressionwere not as successful as hoped and did not gain him much popularity
while he ran again for a second term as president. In 1932, Franklin Roosevelt won
the presidential election by a landslide against President Hoover. President Roosevelt
created policies and programs that later collectively became known as the New Deal.

Argumentative Essay On The Iraq War
The Iraq War started in 2003. The war was a protracted armed conflict that began
with the invasion of Iraq by a coalition led by the United states. This ultimately led to
overthrowing Saddam Hussein s government.
The political, economic, and social reasons that led to the war.
Iraq has been the concentration of the universal group and has been included
unmistakably in the media as of late, as the radical Islamist assemble known as the
Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has significantly expanded its energy and impact in
the area in the last half of 2014. The political turmoil and definitely crumbled security
condition, which describes present day Iraq, can be followed back to the United States
intrusion of that nation and ISIS, which has as of late developed in Iraq and Syria,
in the revolt against the resultant US occupation, in those days as al Qaeda in Iraq.
In any case, for what reason did the US attack and involve Iraq anyway? Today,
there is a troublesome civil argument about what the Bush organization s intentions
were, with the probably clarification being a blend of the majority of the reasons
advertised. What should likewise be considered is that the occasions paving the way
to the 2003 attack just go most of the way to clarify why the US propelled this
crusade, and keeping in mind the end goal to comprehend the intricate and
multidimensional components adding to the Bush organization s choice to attack
Iraq, one must backpedal further and look at pre 9/11 US

him in every situation and problem. Now he starts to regret yelling and being a

has anger issues sometimes and usually remembers his grandparents in his head that
they were here with him. Reef now has changed his behavior because he knows how
it feels to be treated by yelling and being horrible person by people around him.
Lastly, he could have changed by his language because he never cares about other

Marquez
The Solitude of Latin America

years after the publication of his book One Hundred Years of Solitude. His speech
accepting the Nobel Prize, lived up to his stature; a brilliant author and narrator
seamlessnessly blending the real with the unreal, the ordinary and the magical. The
speech offers glimpses into Marquez s thoughts pertaining to Latin America, to his
childhood and to humanity as a whole.
Marquez s speech, akin to all his other works is embedded in his native land of Latin
America, following the vicissitudes of life amongst the rampant corruption,
destruction and anarchism. The speech at its core is a political statement to the

The novel explores the issue of timelessness or eternity even within the framework of
mortal existence. A major trope with which it accomplishes this task is the alchemist
s laboratory in the Buendia family home. It is a place where the male Buendia
characters can indulge their will to solitude, whether through attempts to deconstruct
the world with reason as in the case of Jose Arcadio BuendГa, or by the endless
creation and destruction of golden fish as in the case of his son Colonel Aureliano
Buendia. Furthermore, a sense of inevitability prevails throughout the text. This is a
feeling that regardless of what way one looks at time, its encompassing nature is the

Latin America at the current juncture is akin to a blind man left to find his way
across the desert. The quest for a national identity is bloody, full of ups and downs.
Every country has its own unique epoch through history that marks its identity; Latin
America is yet to come across one. Marquez s chief complaint is the apathy exhibited
by the west towards steps taken by Latin America to render plausible its own social
aims. Agreed Latin America abounds with madness and obstinacy yet the only
sentiment echoed by the west has been that of sympathy and not support. This is the
crux of the Latin American Solitude, a solitude both geographic and ideological in its
nature. Solitude is the central theme of the novel and expressions through
Examples Of Kindness In Black Beauty
The book Black Beauty by Anna Sewell tells the story of a horse named Black
Beauty by a few of his owners. He grows up with good owners: a farmer, then the
Birtwicks, but then gets changed into the hands of owners who are more cruel, who
get worse as time goes on. He then finds a good owner in Jerry Barker, who treatshim
well yet must work him hard as a cab horse. Eventually, Jerry has to sell him, where
he finds the worst of his owners, until being bought and recovered, then finally sold
to people who knew him as Black Beauty, and determined to never sell him. The
theme of kindnessruns through the entire book. Kindness is when someone thinks
about the feelings of everyone else (not discriminating between looks, actions, or
social status), and makes a conscious, continuous, and wholehearted effort to treat
them well. Kindness is when people treat everyone with respect. In Black Beauty,
the creatures who are shown as good ones are kind to cruel and kind people alike.
On page 8, Black Beauty s mother told him not to say that it served a man right to
die when he was hunting and injured his horse (her other son), showing that she
was kind to everyone, even those who were mean to someone close to her. Some
people would think it was okay, as long as they didn t insult them to their face, but
Black Beauty s mother shows how kind she is by not doing that. Since she also
doesn t reprimand the other colts for saying those things, she is kind to them as well,
even though they are

Surgical weight reduction is a major decision and should not be taken lightly.
2. Surgery and Weight Loss:
Obesity surgery helps you lose weight by changing the way your body digests and
absorbs food. Your body digests food to break down what you eat into small pieces
of nutrients. When the pieces are small enough, the cells of your body absorb the
nutrients to give you energy.
Normally, digestion and absorption begin in the stomach, continue through the small
intestine and end in the large intestine, which digests and absorbs what it can and
eliminates the rest as waste. Obesity surgery involves making changes to the stomach
and/or small intestine.

Abstract: Software architecture is important because of communication among
stakeholders, Design decisions for understanding software, transferable design of a
system. Software architecture represents a common design of a system that most if
not all of the system s stakeholders can use as a basis for mutual understanding,
negotiation, agreement, and communication. Software architecture manifests the
earliest design decisions about a system, and these early bindings carry weight .It is
also the earliest point at which design decisions governing the system to be built can
be analyzed. Software architecture constitutes a relatively small, intellectually
understandable model for how a system is structured and how its elements work
together, and this model is transferable across systems. There are different types of
architectural styles: Distributed architecture, data flow architecture, implicit
asynchronous architecture, data centered architecture, hierarchical architecture and
interaction oriented architecture. This paper compares all the architectural styles and
aspects of comparison are category, styles, advantages, disadvantages, examples.

Egil s Saga Essay
The author most likely intended for Egil s Saga to be a historical documentation of
Scandinavia, its culture, and several of its inhabitants. The tale could also be seen as
a folk tale, set in a realistic setting with real people, but the events are skewed and not
quite right. The epic accomplishes the first possible intention through its many
characters, the use known locations, and basing the majority of the tale around two
individual families that would have been well known around the time it was written.
However, the tale is not entirely accurate, which strengthens the idea that it was more
of a folktale. Throughout the epic the audience is introduced to two families,
beginning far before the birth of the man who would attributed to the title. The tale
then follows these families through the events that led up to the main plot of the
epic, going so far as to keep detailed track of who married who and where each
character came from. An example of this would be the detailed description of Olaf on

This was due to most people being unable to read. Only those with enough money
could afford to get an education and learn how to read their own language. This
meant that only a small portion of the population would be able to read Egil s Saga.
However, these educated individuals could read the story aloud in Icelandic to a

Egil s Saga is quick paced and exaggerated, like a folk tale version of a family story.
This stylistic choice would keep an audience tuned in to the story and unsure of
when to walk away from it. Each chapter is filled with action and lacks any real
downtime. Someone is always up to something that is at least mildly exciting. This

While it s rapidly spreading there are also rapid changes in every instance of time as
addition of new sophisticated technologies and new standards etc.
Though communication technology is currently undergoing a massive revolution,
these advances and the accompanying benefits have not yet filtered down to those in
developing nations with antiquated and outdated technology. This project attempts to
address this need by developing a system that harnesses the power of the Internet,
which is the most economical and yet most widely available and accessible global

Dbq Civil War
The Civil War as one of the most infamous conflicts in American History. It was a
war borne from clashing ideologies and beliefs, and divided the nation by North and
South and brother against brother. The North believed in that a strong central
government was the best way to govern the nation. They supported the Republican
Party and wished to stop the spread of slavery to new states, and later in the war, the
abolition of it in its entirety. The South believed in the rights of states to create their
own laws and that the states should be more powerful than the central government.
They also supported the Democratic Party and, the largest cause of the war, believed
that slavery should not be abolished and should be protected. While these issues...

In 1850, a new law was passed known as the Fugitive Slave Law. This law was
passed in retaliation to the growing antislavery sentiment and the influx in
escaping slaves. It made it illegal to help escaping slaves anywhere in the United
States and caused escaped slaves to not attain freedom when entering a free state.
In 1857 in response to this law, Dredd Scott, a slave who entered the free territories
of Illinois and Wisconsin sued Sanford for his freedom. This case was taken all the
way to the Supreme Court where it was then thrown out. The Supreme Court
declared that Dred Scott did not have the right to sue since he was legally a piece
of property; furthermore, the Supreme Court did not stop there with their ruling and
declared that it was unconstitutional to ban slavery in anywhere in the United States
and that slaves could not be freed by entering free states; this also effectively undid
the Missouri Compromise by giving slave states an unfair advantage. This decision
outraged many Northerners who had previously been moderates capable of
swinging either way towards the Republican Party giving the party they needed to
have a Republican president elected. Finally, with the election of Lincoln to office,
the South believed that it was only a matter of time that slavery was abolished and
decided to secede from the Union. This led to the Battle of Fort Sumter,
The Romance Of The Rose Analysis
The Romance of the Rose was written in the 13th century by Guillaume de Lorris
and Jean de Meun. De Lorris was a French poet that wrote the first section of the
poem, while De Meun was a French author that wrote the second section. After de
Lorris wrote the first section, he died, which lead to de Meun finishing it. Their
parts are related but have many differences. As de Lorris section is very
comprehendible, de Meuns is vaguer and requires more critical thinking. The poem
has created an abundance of arguments surrounding the topic of a women s dignity
and role. These arguments had immense impacts on today s pop culture. The book
developed the notion of lovenot being an emotion, but more of a pose. They did
this by making characteristics, such as Courtesy, Beauty, and Wealthy, as
characters themselves to see how they would act in certain circumstances. This
helps the reader believe that the authors are trying to display how these traits are
treated in real life. The author states, FIer color made her look like a new rosel and
her skin was so tender that one could tear it with a tiny thorn (de Lorris 42), which
helps the reader understand how the characters names will be a big part of the poem
and the moral surrounding it. It also suggests that some women are less fragile, and
harder to pursue than others which is directly related to how people perceive women
outside of the poem. The imagery and descriptions of the narrator s thoughts controls
how the whole poem is
Social Concepts Of Social Psychology In The Shawshank...
Prison is a place that is known to have its own community and culture. Prisoners are
often known to be subject to violence, sexual assaults, maltreatment, and constantly
self guarded.
One of the most famous psychological studies, the Stanford Prison experiment
conducted by Philip Zimabardo, attempts to show how social roles influence our
behavior. Guards in the study quickly assumed distressing behavior resulting in the
experiment to be terminated after six days. Zimbardo today maintains that the
balance of power in prisons is so unequal that they tend to be brutal places, unless the
guards observe strict regulations, to curb their worst impulses. (Gilovich, Keltner,
Chen, Nisbett, Social Psychology Fourth Edition Pg.7) The environment in a prison
exhibits three major social psychology concepts that can be easily discerned through
the fictional film The Shawshank Redemption. The main character demonstrates
concepts of social psychology through his relationships, persuasion techniques, and
encounters with aggression.
The Shawshank Redemption is a period drama about a banker named Andy
Dufresne who is accused and wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her
lover. In 1947, Andy begins a life sentence at the Shawshank prison where he
befriends another inmate named Red. During the span of Andy s confinement he
comes to be admired by other inmates for his likable unabashed nature and
impressive moral compass. Andy has a rough first few years, as anyone in a prison

Similarities Between Frankenstein And Grendel
Although all works of literature are different than one another, many of them hold
very similar meanings. Some often give across the same message and can be
compared very closely to each other. We, readers, see a great example of this in both
Grendel, by John Gardner, and Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. In these novels we see
that numerous topics are parallel to one another. The ideas of isolation, injustice, and
consideration are present in both texts. While Grendel, from an early point in the
novel, is aware that he is alone, the topic of isolation is apparent throughout the
entirety of the story. Specifically, Grendel asks, Why can t I have someone to talk
to? I said. The stars said nothing, but I pretended to ignore the rudeness. (pg.53) This
metaphorically illustrates how lonely Grendel actually is. The reality of his
lonesomeness causes him to become desperate for a friend. Similarly, Frankenstein
states, Increase of knowledge only discovered to me more clearly what a wretched
outcast I was. (Pg. 125) In the novel, Frankenstein,... Show more content on

Drunken men rushed me with battle axes. I sank to my knees, crying, Friend! Friend!
They hacked at me, yipping like dogs. I held up a body for protection. (Pg. 52)
Grendel wasn t trying to arouse a fight. He simply wanted to be friends with the
humans. However, they did not take time to understand him. They were ignorant and
continued to attack. Although both Grendel and Frankenstein are strong, powerful
creatures, they aren t completely cruel. When Felix struck Frankenstein with a stick,
Frankenstein explained his inner thoughts; I could have torn him limb from limb, as
a lion rends the antelope. But my heart sunk within me as with bitter sickness, and I
refrained. (Pg. 119) The characters in both novels have a sense of consideration.
Therefore, they should be respected and treated just like any other. Unfortunately,
despite their good sides, humans mistreat
Animals Treated Animals
Should animals continue to be treated as property? In the law they don t, but I think
they should. Animals are beings with emotions; therefore, they should be respected.
Animals should not be used in the circus because the animals in this are being
incarcerated. They are being forced to do unnatural things so they can avoid the
animal abuse used in training. Trophy huntingshould stay legal for the simple fact
that this is how must wildlife conservations are funded. It s easy for us to criticize
them as inhumane, but how else can poor countries get the money needed to fund
this. Sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Also, I agree
that livestock are raised to be eaten and should be, but I don t agree with the ways
that we treat them. We should treat them with respect both before and during
slaughter. While animals in the eyes of the law are seen as property, this does not
mean that man should be cruel to animals. They are beings that should be respected.
In a perfect world, circuses would ban the use of entertainment animals. When one
buys a ticket to visit the circus, they are contributing to animal cruelty. Circuses use
violence to train the animals, so that they can do demeaning acts. It is not natural for
elephants to balance themselves on a ball, or for tigers to jump through rings of fire.
During all the acts, the training will stand off to the side with a whip ready to beat
the animal when they don t want to perform. Circuses claim that they
Using Css3 And Html5 For Designing
Abstract: This paper aims at solving the problems of layman which are being faced

Fashion Trends And The Fashion Industry
According to Scratchhard.com, the fashion industry generates an average of $20
billion each year. Fashion designers are the heart of the fashion world. The fashion
industry has grown to popularity by dominating the worldwide economy, media,
workplace, and everyday life. Clothing trends have changed over the last century due
to historical events and the evolution of technology. With the gift of creativity and
skill of constructing clothing, fashiondesigners complete a degree in designing,
research past trends, predict future trends, sketch ideas, and oversee production of
their designs. Fashion designers translate their ideas into clothing to sell. The first
step of designing is researching current fashion trends and predicting future trends.
Trends determine the success of the fashion industry. Designers normally choose a
speciality to design, such as swimwear, bridal wear, children s clothing, footwear,
and men s wear. Sketching the original design is the next important step of the
design process. Computer Aided Designs are the modern method of sketching. Next,
fabric and embellishments are chosen to correspond with the designer s vision.
Creating custom printed fabric and custom dyeing fabric is common for designers.
Most designers work for large companies which provide the designer with a sewing
team. Large apparel companies usually consist of a team of designers headed by a
creative manager. Communicating ideas to the sewing team and giving them specific

Causes Of The Persian War
The Persian War was a string of battles fought between Persia and the Greek city
states of Athens and Sparta. At impossible odds, the divided Greece was able to unite
to defeat the biggest enemy that existed in that time. The fact that even at impossible
odds, the Greek army was able to use intellectual military tactics and outsmart the
Persians with their colossal army was a huge accomplishment for the Greek city
states. The most important battles of the Persian War were the battle of Marathon,
Thermopylae, Salamis and Plataea.
The first battle of the Persian War was the battle of Marathon. Persia decided to
invade Greece to take revenge on Athens as they assisted the Greek territories in the
Ionian Revolt over Persia. The Persian king, Darius, ... Show more content on

The triumph at Salamis helped inspire moral for the Greeks troops after the loss at
Thermopylae. In the words of Eric V. D. Luft, That decisive naval victory at the
Battle of Salamis inspired the Greek land forces. (2004) In 479 BCE, led by the
Spartan king, Pausanius, an army of Spartans and Athenians pushed the remaining
Persians out of Greece. After over a decade of fighting, the Greeks had finally
defeated Persia won the war.
After the end of the Persian war had many effects on Greece. This war brought the
separated city states together to fight the common enemy and together they
eliminated the biggest rival. In order to prevent more turmoil and more war, Athens
teamed up with other city states and created the Delian League. The Delian League
brought prosperity and peace for Greece with a Golden Age following the war. The
Greek victory helped preserve Greek culture and helped distinguish Athens as a world
power that was equal to the strength of

Cybersecurity has become a vital component of our world today and it needs to evolve fast to keep up in its protection from the outside. Cybersecurity protects us from unauthorized shutdowns, break ins, financial and social ruin. We live in a world that has become completely reliant on computers for everything. They are able to cause chaos and even shutdown nuclear centrifuges, air defense systems, and electrical grids. (Hathaway, Crootof, Levitiz, Nix, Nowlan, Perdue Spiegel, 2012) Cyber attacks are more common today due to the increase capability of technology. Important information along with every aspect of people s lives are kept on computers or cell phones which are vulnerable at all times. An example of this would be the leaked snapchat photos of celebrities, stolen identities and unauthorized access from an outside computer into a power plant. In New York State we have four nuclear powerplants. These nuclear power plants contribute to the economy, society and the environment. The Nuclear power plants are Entergy s Fitzpatrick in Scriba and Indian Point in Buchanan, and Exelon s Ginna in Ontario and Nine mile point in Scriba provide New York households and employers with over 5,000 megawatts (MW)of emissions free electricity and nearly 42 million megawatt hours (MWh) of annual electricity generation. Cyclohexane Lab Laboratory 8: Distribution Constant of Iodine Between Cyclohexane and Water Objective: The objective of the experiment was to determine the distribution coefficient (the equilibrium concentration ratio) of iodine between the immiscible solvents water and cyclohexane. This experiment was a study of equilibrium. The distribution coefficient will be derived from the data obtained by performing a chemical analysis for iodine in the water layer. Procedure: First, approximately 120 mL of aqueous iodine and 75 mL of sodium thiosulfate was obtained. A buret was rinsed with several 2 3 mL portions of sodium thiosulfate solution and then the buret was filled with the solution. Afterward, 1 mL of starch solution and then thiosulfate solution was added until the blue color of the starch iodine complex disappeared. The volume of the liquid in the buret was read again. Also, a large test tube was cleaned and dried. 50 mL of iodine solution was carefully measured with a 25 mL graduated cylinder. Next, 5.0 mL of cyclohexane was measured and added to the graduated cylinder. The test tube was stoppered with a rubber stopper. The mixture was shook for one minute at first, then for about five minutes. The process was repeated, where the 50 mL of iodine solution in a 25 mL graduated cylinder was obtained, and then a second 50 mL of iodine solution and 8.0 mL of cyclohexane was added. Next, the cyclohexane layer was removed with a Pasteur pipet from the first test tube into a beaker. In addition, 25.0 mL of the water layer was poured into a clean,

Terrorism, to be more specific though they are called The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). They have a few other names as well, The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Daesh. I will choose to call them Daesh in this piece because these terrorists find it insulting. The reason for this is that Daesh an acronym for ISIS in Arabic. This acronym though sounds exactly like the Arabic word dais, which means something that crushes or tramples. In recent months many Arabs and Western leaders, including Secretary of State John Kerry, prefer to call it Daesh, the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State. But Islamic State members hate the term because in Arabic, the pronunciation is close to a word that can be variously translated as to crush or bigot who imposes his will on others (Reid, 2). Daesh do not want this title and have threatened to cut out the tongues of people who use it. Daesh are a product of instability in the Syrian and Iraq region plus a Syrian civil war. Unfortunately, America is greatly at fault for the instability in Iraq and helped fund the Syrian rebels, so you could say the U.S. helped create them. Daesh s goal is to start a religious war. They want the world to fear Islam and want them to hate it. They showed us exactly what they were capable of in Paris France. The world needs to realize that this is just a

Counter Terrorism Alternatives James Penney English Composition II Nikkele Shelton 25 August 2014 Counter Terrorism Alternatives In today s day and age, the fear of terrorism is not only a common sentiment, but is also a rising subject of debate. In order to keep troops out of harm s way, the United States has looked for alternate means of combatting terrorist organizations. Since September 11, 2001 the United States has relied heavily on its men and women in uniform to prevent terrorism abroad. Technology of today and the use of intelligence offer the United States alternate means of addressing terrorism. For instance, drone strikes were called by former US CIA director Leon Panetta, the only game in town in term of confronting or trying to disrupt the Al Qaeda leadership (ODLE, 2013). With the use of typology, socioeconomic assistance, drones, diplomatic engagement and enhanced airline security services, the use of military force is not the only way to prevent terrorism. If our country wants to never send another son or daughter to war then we must first understand who the terrorists are. Former President George Bush said we fight against poverty because hope is an answer to terror (Lee 2011). On the other hand, there are studies that say the opposite, that terrorism is not related to poverty. Poverty and education are very important factors of what violence occurs. The lower the poverty and education the increased chances for violence.

The war started on April 25, 1846, and ended on February 2, 1848, with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In that treaty, Mexico ceded Texas with the Rio Grande boundary, New Mexico , and California to the United States. The desire to expand slavery in the south was perhaps the largest cause of the Mexican American War, because southerners were in favor of Manifest Destiny and believed that the expansion of slavery was necessary to keep the slave trade alive in the U.S. Internal political conflicts were another cause of the Mexican American War. • 10. Peace As A Concept Of The Fundamental Problems Faced By... Peace as a concept is seen through the lens of the fundamental problems faced by the world today: war, armed conflict and political violence. By insinuation, peace itself is understood predominantly as a negative concept, or as the absence of these phenomena (Atack, 2009). Martin Luther King said that True peace is not merely the absence of some negative force tension, confusion or war; it is the presence of some positive force justice, good will and brotherhood (King, 1957). Indeed, peace should focus on the positive social and political phenomena such as integrity, equality and wellbeing. In order to create a peaceful world, humans have to strive for positive peace, a condition brought about by establishing standards of justice, human rights, and sustainable development in beloved communities (Harris, 1996, p. 386). Gandhiji too described his ideas of peace with a focus on the positive, according to him peace includes: (i) Peace implies the capacity to live together in harmony. (ii) The creation of non violent social systems, i.e., a society free from structural violence. (iii) The absence of exploitation and injustice of every kind. (iv) International cooperation and understanding. (v) Ecological balance and conservation. (vi) Peace of mind, or the psycho spiritual dimension of peace. (NCERT, 2006) These positive views of peace lead us beyond the limited negative associations the notion is centered around. It is important to understand that the concept

Elizibethan Religious Settlement Essay Elizabethan Religious Settlement The Elizabethan Religious Settlement was Elizabeth I s response to the religious divisions created over the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I. This response, described as The Revolution of 1559 ,[1] was set out in two Acts of the Parliament of England. The Act of Supremacy of 1559 re established the Church of England s independence from Rome, with Parliament conferring on Elizabeth the title Supreme Governor of the Church of England, while the Act of Uniformity of 1559 set out the form the English church would now take, including the establishment of the Book of Common Prayer. It revoked the harsh laws proposed against Roman Catholics, it removed the abuse of the Pope from the litany and kept the wording that allowed for both a subjective and objective belief in the Real Presence in the Communion. After Parliament was dismissed, Elizabeth, along with Cecil, drafted what are known as the Royal Injunctions, 1559. These were additions to the settlement and largely stressed some continuity with the Catholic past: ministers were ordered to wear the surplice; wafers, as opposed to ordinary baker s bread, were to be used as the bread at Communion. There had been opposition to the settlement in the shires, which for the most part were largely Roman Catholic, so the changes are often said to have been made in order to allow for acceptance of the

Santiago is also referred to as a butterfly, a very fragile creature, with no will or say in what happens to it. This insinuates that even if he was to try, Santiago Nasar would never be able to free himself from the fate Angela s words set for him. This goes directly against the social norms of the time, in which Santiago, the wealthy man, should be able to control Angela, the poor woman. Angela s statement that it was Santiago who took her virginity also exercises a certain control over her brothers. In the trial, Pablo and Pedro declared that they would have done it again a thousand times over for the same reason (MГЎrquez 48). Even though they did have their own free will in committing the murders, Pablo and Pedro did not question their decision to murder Santiago in defense of Angela s honor. In these essays the authors provided facts and justification for the Constitution, with also raising and discussing some of the most important political issues of the time. The sole purpose for writing the essays was to convince people of the State of New York to ratify the U.S. Constitution. People of New York and its political leaders were strongly against the Constitution and they firmly opposed new government. The main reason for that is the fact that the State of New York gain independence under the Articles of Confederation and was becoming rich trough the trade. The citizens of this state believed that they have no interest in ratifying the Constitution and joining the Union. The writers of The Federalist Papers were very concerned that because of New York s reluctance and decided to take the matter into their hands and came all the efforts in order to change their minds. They were very well aware of the relationship between human nature and popular government. Hamilton, Madison and Jay were apprehensive of the ethics of the

  • 21. The Pros And Cons Of The Juvenile Justice System Blended sentencing laws which give courts discretion in some cases to impose juvenile and/or adult sentences on young offenders became popular during the 1990s as a means of broadening the spectrum of available sanctions. These laws variously allow courts to impose: 1. An adult or a juvenile sentence; 2. Both a juvenile and an adult sentence; or 3. A sentence that exceeds the normal limit of juvenile court jurisdiction. Since 2002, Ohio has provided a blended sentencing alternative for designated serious youth offenders, who receive both a juvenile and an adult sentence. The Ohio sentencing alternative was modeled on Minnesota s blended sentencing alternative, referred to as Extended Juvenile Jurisdiction (EJJ). Under this system, the suspended adult system sentence may be imposed if the offender does not comply with the terms of the juvenile court sentence. The Minnesota and Ohio alternatives are sometimes referred to as a last chance for young offenders to remain in the juvenile justice system. Both states have retained the traditional option of transfer to adult court for serious juvenile offenders. Researchers who have studied how prosecutorial decisions are made under these systems generally assume that prosecutors use a two step process whereby they first decide whether a particular case involving a juvenile defendant will be prosecuted in juvenile court or motioned for a specialized processing track. In the second stage, prosecutors decide whether
  • 22. The Film Moonlight By Barry Jenkins It s more than difficult living in a drug plagued, impoverished community. These places are often ignored, but just as important as anywhere else. The film Moonlight, directed by Barry Jenkins, is meant to demonstrate the hardships of living in a difficult community. Thematically, it highlights the already difficult nature of being black in modern America, while simultaneously showing the hardship of also being gay in said tough community. The film is comprised into three acts surrounding the development of the protagonist, Chiron (in order of acts: Alex R. Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevant Rhodes). The blocking in this scene is also a foreshadow for the rest of the movie. In the beginning, Chiron is scared and unsure of who he is, turning to the help of others like Juan and his girlfriend, Teresa. However, after trial and tribulation, Chiron learns how to swim on his own. He slowly starts understanding how to cope with his sexuality even if he s not accepted. And unfortunately, for most of the film, Chiron is subjected to the sad realities that engulf everyone around him. As expected, this happy scene is cut short as Chiron is dropped off at home to find his mother with drugs and a stranger in the house. The scene is meant to immediately draw the viewer back to the real world, the one Chiron has grown up in. In actuality, Chiron can t just escape the situation he was born into. The mise ГЁn scene used in this moment is meant to demonstrate how the mother is quickly losing grasp of a happy life; trying to escape their reality by any means necessary. The blocking of Paula portrays her as anxious and angry, grabbing what appears to be drugs from her dining table. The lighting is also dark and the house is dirty, reinforcing the idea that her life is slipping away. This is just one of many situations in which Chiron is snapped back into reality after feeling accepting for who he is. Act two cuts to Chiron as a high schooler. Like before, his quiet nature seems to get the best

A study by Schrader (2012) examined osteoarthritis and entheseal remodeling at Tombos Nubia, after the Egyptian New Kingdom colonization (1550 1069 BCE). The author used skeletal remains from the colonial town Tombos as a way to compare activity patterns during Egypt s colonial expansion into Nubia. Many Egyptian researchers vary on how Egyptian colonial policies impacted Nubian inhabitants. Some believe that the local populace was forced to meet Egyptian tributes, which included slaves, goods, gold, and grain (Schrader, 2012:61). While others believe that there were positive interactions between the two groups, which included minimal tributes and the ability of Nubians to hold onto cultural values (Schrader, 2012:62). Schrader s research focused on entheseal changes and osteoarthritis in the skeletal remains found at Tombos, in an effort to understand how Nubian activity levels altered. The author used entheses, as a way of measuring musculoskeletal stress markers, and osteoarthritis to compare Tombos population (Schrader, 2012:62). Both conditions are impacted by the sex, age, and body size of an individual; along with environmental factors and genetic predispositions (Schrader, 2012:62). Even though neither of these conditions allow us to understand know exactly what an individual did while they were alive, they will offer up certain information about the population. Gender And Sex Is Not Considered Fashionable For A Boy On numerous occasions, I have been told that I am recognized as a female but my behavior is unladylike and/or the way I dress is not considered fashionable for a boy. As well as information from the Combahee River Collective informing one who reads about the hardships of black feminists. According to Anne Fausto Sterling (2000) her major claims is that labeling someone a man or a woman is a social decision. In the beginning of the article she introduces a female Olympian, Maria Patino, failing to pass a sex test because a Y chromosome was indicated (Fausto Sterling, 2000, pp. 1 2). Drawing attention to this story provides an example how sex is created through standards. To support this idea she introduces sexologists John Money and Anke Ehrhardt theory about the difference between gender and sex. They argue that gender is the internal conviction as well as behavior that one is either a male or female and sex refers to the physical traits (Fausto Sterling, 2000, p. 3). This reinforces the idea that gender and sex is assembled based on social order around them creating limited awareness. When the text mentions gender is expressed as internal conviction and behavior implying it is established on observation on a personal level. On the other hand, sex is

The conclusion to this story is the narrator s final paragraphs were he relates the couple to the Magi and praises Jim and Della of being the wisest givers of all, contrary to popular belief. The comparison O. In this story, we see a man and a woman so blinded by love that they are willing to make ultimate sacrifices for the happiness of the other. Similar to the Magi, Della and Tim put each other before themselves and through their generosity and considerable lengths they both went to achieve that generosity is something more admirable than any materialistic gift they could ever offer each other, thus making the uselessness of their gifts irrelevant. He then finds a good owner in Jerry Barker, who treatshim well yet must work him hard as a cab horse. Eventually, Jerry has to sell him, where he finds the worst of his owners, until being bought and recovered, then finally sold to people who knew him as Black Beauty, and determined to never sell him. The theme of kindnessruns through the entire book. Kindness is when someone thinks about the feelings of everyone else (not discriminating between looks, actions, or social status), and makes a conscious, continuous, and wholehearted effort to treat them well. Kindness is when people treat everyone with respect. In Black Beauty, the creatures who are shown as good ones are kind to cruel and kind people alike. • 42. Dbq Civil War The Civil War as one of the most infamous conflicts in American History. It was a war borne from clashing ideologies and beliefs, and divided the nation by North and South and brother against brother. The North believed in that a strong central government was the best way to govern the nation. They supported the Republican Party and wished to stop the spread of slavery to new states, and later in the war, the abolition of it in its entirety. The South believed in the rights of states to create their own laws and that the states should be more powerful than the central government. They also supported the Democratic Party and, the largest cause of the war, believed that slavery should not be abolished and should be protected. While these issues... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1850, a new law was passed known as the Fugitive Slave Law. This law was passed in retaliation to the growing antislavery sentiment and the influx in escaping slaves. It made it illegal to help escaping slaves anywhere in the United States and caused escaped slaves to not attain freedom when entering a free state. In 1857 in response to this law, Dredd Scott, a slave who entered the free territories of Illinois and Wisconsin sued Sanford for his freedom. This case was taken all the way to the Supreme Court where it was then thrown out. The Supreme Court declared that Dred Scott did not have the right to sue since he was legally a piece of property; furthermore, the Supreme Court did not stop there with their ruling and declared that it was unconstitutional to ban slavery in anywhere in the United States and that slaves could not be freed by entering free states; this also effectively undid the Missouri Compromise by giving slave states an unfair advantage. This decision outraged many Northerners who had previously been moderates capable of swinging either way towards the Republican Party giving the party they needed to have a Republican president elected. Finally, with the election of Lincoln to office, the South believed that it was only a matter of time that slavery was abolished and decided to secede from the Union. This led to the Battle of Fort Sumter,
  • 43. The Romance Of The Rose Analysis The Romance of the Rose was written in the 13th century by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun. De Lorris was a French poet that wrote the first section of the poem, while De Meun was a French author that wrote the second section. After de Lorris wrote the first section, he died, which lead to de Meun finishing it. Their parts are related but have many differences. As de Lorris section is very comprehendible, de Meuns is vaguer and requires more critical thinking. The poem has created an abundance of arguments surrounding the topic of a women s dignity and role. These arguments had immense impacts on today s pop culture. The book developed the notion of lovenot being an emotion, but more of a pose. They did this by making characteristics, such as Courtesy, Beauty, and Wealthy, as characters themselves to see how they would act in certain circumstances. This helps the reader believe that the authors are trying to display how these traits are treated in real life. The author states, FIer color made her look like a new rosel and her skin was so tender that one could tear it with a tiny thorn (de Lorris 42), which helps the reader understand how the characters names will be a big part of the poem and the moral surrounding it. It also suggests that some women are less fragile, and harder to pursue than others which is directly related to how people perceive women outside of the poem. The imagery and descriptions of the narrator s thoughts controls how the whole poem is
  • 44. Social Concepts Of Social Psychology In The Shawshank... Prison is a place that is known to have its own community and culture. Prisoners are often known to be subject to violence, sexual assaults, maltreatment, and constantly self guarded. One of the most famous psychological studies, the Stanford Prison experiment conducted by Philip Zimabardo, attempts to show how social roles influence our behavior. Guards in the study quickly assumed distressing behavior resulting in the experiment to be terminated after six days. Zimbardo today maintains that the balance of power in prisons is so unequal that they tend to be brutal places, unless the guards observe strict regulations, to curb their worst impulses. (Gilovich, Keltner, Chen, Nisbett, Social Psychology Fourth Edition Pg.7) The environment in a prison exhibits three major social psychology concepts that can be easily discerned through the fictional film The Shawshank Redemption. The main character demonstrates concepts of social psychology through his relationships, persuasion techniques, and encounters with aggression. The Shawshank Redemption is a period drama about a banker named Andy Dufresne who is accused and wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. In 1947, Andy begins a life sentence at the Shawshank prison where he befriends another inmate named Red. During the span of Andy s confinement he comes to be admired by other inmates for his likable unabashed nature and impressive moral compass. Andy has a rough first few years, as anyone in a prison scenario
  • 45. Similarities Between Frankenstein And Grendel Although all works of literature are different than one another, many of them hold very similar meanings. Some often give across the same message and can be compared very closely to each other. We, readers, see a great example of this in both Grendel, by John Gardner, and Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. In these novels we see that numerous topics are parallel to one another. The ideas of isolation, injustice, and consideration are present in both texts. While Grendel, from an early point in the novel, is aware that he is alone, the topic of isolation is apparent throughout the entirety of the story. Specifically, Grendel asks, Why can t I have someone to talk to? I said. The stars said nothing, but I pretended to ignore the rudeness. (pg.53) This metaphorically illustrates how lonely Grendel actually is. The reality of his lonesomeness causes him to become desperate for a friend. Similarly, Frankenstein states, Increase of knowledge only discovered to me more clearly what a wretched outcast I was. (Pg. 125) In the novel, Frankenstein,... (Pg. 52) Grendel wasn t trying to arouse a fight. He simply wanted to be friends with the humans. However, they did not take time to understand him. They were ignorant and continued to attack. Although both Grendel and Frankenstein are strong, powerful creatures, they aren t completely cruel. When Felix struck Frankenstein with a stick, Frankenstein explained his inner thoughts; I could have torn him limb from limb, as a lion rends the antelope. But my heart sunk within me as with bitter sickness, and I refrained. (Pg. 119) The characters in both novels have a sense of consideration. Therefore, they should be respected and treated just like any other. Unfortunately, despite their good sides, humans mistreat
  • 46. Animals Treated Animals Should animals continue to be treated as property? In the law they don t, but I think they should. Animals are beings with emotions; therefore, they should be respected. Animals should not be used in the circus because the animals in this are being incarcerated. They are being forced to do unnatural things so they can avoid the animal abuse used in training. Trophy huntingshould stay legal for the simple fact that this is how must wildlife conservations are funded. It s easy for us to criticize them as inhumane, but how else can poor countries get the money needed to fund this. Sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Also, I agree that livestock are raised to be eaten and should be, but I don t agree with the ways that we treat them. We should treat them with respect both before and during slaughter. While animals in the eyes of the law are seen as property, this does not mean that man should be cruel to animals. They are beings that should be respected. In a perfect world, circuses would ban the use of entertainment animals. When one buys a ticket to visit the circus, they are contributing to animal cruelty. Circuses use violence to train the animals, so that they can do demeaning acts. It is not natural for elephants to balance themselves on a ball, or for tigers to jump through rings of fire. During all the acts, the training will stand off to the side with a whip ready to beat the animal when they don t want to perform. Circuses claim that they
