2. We found that 2/3 of our participants in our questionnaires and
interviews were female . From this we discussed the possibility
of a dominant female role , as this would intrigue our audience.
Also represented in our questionnaire was that 75% said they
would always prefer a female protagonist with an assisting figure
being male. This suggested to us a suggestion of a relationship
would appeal to our audience, but the main focus would be the
female role and her approach to our narrative. The results from
research into our target audience have suggested that we should
ensure we have a combination of the genders, however with an
overruling female audience and preference to a female
protagonist our initial narrative idea of having a terminally ill
young female express the struggling relationship with her father
and a flourishing romance with a boy her age.
3. Our results showed that our audience is predominantly
over the age of 17 with only 25% being 13+. From this we
could establish the age of our protagonist and how this age
would be responsible for some of the creative decisions we
have . For example , our actor will have to have the
appearance of a 17 year old girl which we will establish
through costume and make up . Also we will show this via
other aspects of mis en scene , including the set design of
the girls bedroom as this will ultimately show her true
character as it is alike in reality ones own space and
therefore the representation of her personality thus the
character that the audience will interpret her as .
4. The previous decisions have ultimately morphed this part of
our protagonist. At 17 , a typical teenager would still be in a
form of education. As our film will be based in England , we
have decided to portray the younger characters to be part
of a Sixth Form/ College as this would be conventional for a
student in the UK. As well as this , the subjects we will
assign to the character will be another link to their
personality as a character. For example we will signify our
female protagonist as studying Arts styled subject to
insinuate her creative ability.
5. We chose to follow a romance/drama genre . Our research
showed us how our audience are more interested in the
romantic storylines and it would appeal to them more if
there was an obstacle or dramatic element affecting that
romance. 81% of our interviewed audience said they would
always choose romance over action of comedy , simply
because of recent releases like ‘The Fault In Our Stars’.
The audience for this mainstream film was very similar to
ours and therefore by following similar conventions our
appeal to our audience should be successful.
6. The length of our short film will be an estimated 8 minutes.
Research into other short films and our audience research
has calculated this length as we have decided the depth of
our narrative could not be shown in under 5 minutes , also
the length of time our audience preferred short films to be
is between 6-9 minutes as they feel this is an appropriate
length of time to reveal and also incorporate information
into a narrative.
7. 98% of our surveys proved how the audience we have
chosen to appeal to would always want a positive ending to
short films they view. From this we have decided a simple
act from either the father or the boy would add the positivity
at the end of our story to appeal to our audience .
