2. How did you respond to the original brief with the audience in mind?
Once we received the brief we firstly researched into existing short film to see
what they consisted of and to find out what types and styles aimed at what people.
We found that all short films consist of a beginning middle and end, the
clearer these sections are in most cases the younger the target audience.
Also short films would have a strong clear script, this is because short films need to include a lot
in a short space of time, the more complex the storyline the older the target audience.
3. How did you respond to the original brief with the audience in mind?
We also researched into types of We wanted our film to appeal to as many
genres; people as we could.
And so watched several films with different genres and
found out what their certificate was.
Using this research we decided a Drama, depending on
the storyline, would have the widest target audience, as it
is a very universal genre.
4. How did you respond to the original brief with the audience in mind?
To get further research into target audience we created a video questionnaire about people’s
opinion on short films. We asked questions such as ‘How old they were,’ ‘Whether they have
watched a short film?’ and ‘If they enjoy watching them.’ By using this questionnaire we got
very useful results.

2/09/video-questionnaire.html
We managed to cover a broad range of people aging from 16-29 and the majority of these were open
to watching short films even though this wouldn’t be their first choice.
We also found that most people interviewed thought that a drama would appeal more towards females
and families, but this wouldn’t stop them going to see on if given the chance.
5. How did you respond to the original brief with the audience in mind?
Further into pre-production of our film we altered the storyline to make it clearer, but this
meant our target audience would need to change.
http://bca2media2013group3.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/alterations-to-storyline.html
Our two main characters now are 2 women and are best
friends due to this we felt that it would appeal more toward
women as they can understand and relate to the two girls.
We also changed our film certificate to a PG as our film
followed the guidelines of this rating better than 12/12A.
6. In filming and editing how did you ensure meaning would be apparent to
the audience?
Through out our film we used small hints to
explain and recap certain aspects of the
storyline that together, create our whole film.
We want the storyline to have dramatic irony,
meaning the audience knows what is
happening but the characters don’t.
7. In filming and editing how did you ensure meaning would be apparent to
the audience?
We have done this by giving hints to the audience that the coin is lucky though using several close up
shots of the coin to show its importance as well as that it is double headed, (which is needed to be known
for when the coin changes to tails in the last shot.)
Firstly when the grandma is explaining that the coin
is lucky and gives it to Sarah,
then when Sarah puts it in her pocket so that we
know she has the coin on her person and gives an
impression to the audience that this is going to effect
Sarah in some way,
when she is walking up the stairs in her friends house
to remind the audience about the coin and to show
she still has it.
And the final close up is of the coin when it changes
to tails to show her friend is untrustworthy.
8. In filming and editing how did you ensure meaning would be apparent to
the audience?
For the storyline to make sense we decided to have a scene set a few years before, and include the
moment when Sarah receives the coin.
To make it clear to the audience that it is a different time in Sarah’s life we have used different aged
actresses to show the time difference.
We have used costume to try and bring this across to the audience by trying to get the actresses to wear
similar clothing;
12year old Sarah wears a knitted 18year old Sarah wears knitted
wool cardigan and leggings wool jumper and leggings.
9. In filming and editing how did you ensure meaning would be apparent to
the audience?
While editing the film together we got a little feedback of what people thought. The main point we
needed to address was, make it clearer to the audience that the coin is lucky and causing things to
correct themselves.
To do this we added a flashback by using previous shot from before and adding a voice over to explain
and show that Sarah has also realised the coin is lucky. To make it clear for the audience to know it is a
flashback we made the picture black and white and added an unusual transition, as well as dramatic
background music to add tension.
10. In filming and editing how did you ensure meaning would be apparent to
the audience?
After we created the first draft of our film we made another audience questionnaire to get their
feedback. The people who had taken the questionnaire were not only our target audience but
also variety of different people; this helped greatly with finding out what others thought.
It also gave us good feedback and ideas on how the audience themselves would make would make
our film better.
11. In filming and editing how did you ensure meaning would be apparent to
the audience?
We have listened to what the audience has said and have used
any ideas and alterations that we thought would benefit our film.
For example one person has said they got confused that the two different actors were
one character, and so we added some text to say that 5years had passed. Another
improvement that we added to our film was sound level and volume, we have altered
this to make it sound like it is coming from the environment it is in and not too loud.
12. How did the audience respond when you trailed aspects of your film?
Are there a possible variety of interpretations of your film that will
depend on cultural situation of the viewer?
Different people may respond and interpret our film differently because there are a aspects of the film
that people may not believe or take a different way to another person. For example in some cultures
they don’t believe luck exists and so find it hard to understand the theme and how the characters would
feel. Another thing that could cause a different response could be the actual coin been lucky as this isn’t
an obvious lucky charm as a horseshoe or 4-leaf clover would be.
Some may think that there is more to the story than just what has been shown because we have left the
ending slightly open to interpretation on what could happen next to the girls friendship, and the coin.
During our audience feedback we included a section that allowed us to analyze the audience
interpretation by asking questions about hat they have seen.
The main answer that varied was whether they picked up on if the phone had broken or if it
has been fixed.
