Fiber optics use thin strands of glass to transmit light signals over long distances. Light travels down the fiber due to total internal reflection off the inner surface of the glass. Fiber optics have several advantages including being less expensive than traditional copper wires, having a higher carrying capacity to transmit more data, and using light signals which allow for clearer transmission and no fire risk. Fiber optics are used widely in telecommunications and computer networks due to these benefits.
