Fiber optic lines carry digital information over long distances using thin strands of glass. They transmit light signals by having the light bounce between the inner and outer layers of the fiber. Fiber optic cables can transmit data over longer distances than copper wires and carry more data lines in a smaller diameter cable. Optical fibers are made of highly purified glass to minimize impurities that could reduce light transmission over long runs.
