Operations Management Homework
1. What is the best way to increase value the most, given the following information for one customer? Base Case:
Perceived benefits $50 and Price $10.00
Improvement Option A: Perceived benefits $65 and Price $13.00
Improvement Option B: Perceived benefits $65 and Price $12.50
Improvement Option C: Perceived benefits $60 and Price $12.50
We derive the following (using the formula, value = perceived benefits / price (cost) to the customer): * Base Case:
value = (50/10) = 5 * Option A: value = (65/13) = 5 * Option B: value = (65/12.50) = 5.20 * Option C: value =
(60/12.50) = 4.80
The option B is the best way to increase value the most (but the cost to the customer is higher, and the perceived
benefit as well). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Use productivity arguments to recommend whether or not to change the current system.
Using the formula:
= 50 / 1 = 50 = 90 / 3 = 30 It is better not to change the system, since a single worker can handle 50 cars per hour
(taking orders, assembling them and acting as a cashier), on the other hand, 3 workers (one taking orders, the second
assembling them, and the third acting as cashier) would handle 30 cars each. 10. What is the average value of a loyal
customer (VLC) in a target market segment if the average purchase price is $75 per visit, the frequency of
repurchase is six times per year, the contribution margin is 10 percent, and the average customer defection rate is 25
percent?
Using the formula: VLC = (P) (RF) (CM) (BLC) VLC = (75) (6) (10%) (1/0.25) VLC = $180.00 The average value
of a loyal customer (VLC) is $180.00.
12. What is the average defection rate for grocery store shoppers in a local area of a large city if customers spend
$60 per visit, customers shop 52 weeks per year, the grocery store has a 12 percent gross mar gin, and the value of a
loyal customer is estimated at $2,750 per year? Using the formula: VLC = (P) (RF) (CM) (BLC) 2,750 = (60) (52)
(12%) (1/DF) 2,750 = 374.4 (1/DF) 7.345085 = (1/DF) DF = 1/7.345085 DF = 14% The average defection rate for

Toyota Financial Analysis Paper
Introduction For my project I have chosen a Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) – an international automobile
manufacturer. In addition, Toyota provides retail and wholesale financing, retail leasing and certain other financial
services primarily to its dealers and their customers related to vehicles manufactured by Toyota. The major portions
of Toyota s operations on a worldwide basis are derived from the Automotive and Financial Services business
segments. The Company also has an All Other segment, which includes its non automotive business activities. The
most significant of Toyota s other operations are its information technology (IT) related businesses and pre
fabricated housing. The company was established in 1937. The Toyota group ... Show more content on

Toyota has invested in several joint ventures. These joint ventures may be deemed as variable interest entities,
however, neither the aggregate size of these JVs nor Toyota s involvements in these entities are expected to be

Accounting for the Transfer to the Japanese Government of the Substitutional Portion of Employee Pension Fund
Liabilities. Toyota has already begun the separation process. However, no effect of this transaction has been
recognized in the consolidated financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2003 as the completion of the
transfer of the benefit obligation and related plan assets to the Japanese government is expected in the year ending
March 31, 2004. Subseqent events, errors and irregularities, illegal acts or related party transactions TMC did not get
involved into any related party transactions. TMC enters only in business interactions with its business partners,
contract suppliers and affiliated companies. There were no errors or irregularities reported for the TMC for the year
ended March 31, 2003. There were some factors that could influence the future operations of the company. TMC was
involved in various pending and settled court proceedings that could have an impact in the future. I will describe
only the most important ones: 1. In February 2003 Toyota

The Four Roles Of Mentoring And Mentoring In The Odyssey
The origin of the term mentor dates back to the near end of 18th century BC, when the Greek epic poem Odyssey,
written by Homer, is believed to have been composed. As the main character, Odysseus, embarks in a 20 year long
journey, he asks his friend, Mentor, to guide his son during his absence. Mentor accepts it, and acts as a father figure,
teacher, role model, leader, and friend to Telemachus (Online Etymology Dictionary).
Modern interpretations of mentoring pinpoint four distinct roles which mentors are expected to play: role modeling,
sponsorship, coaching, and counseling the mentee. These many roles are played by the mentor so the mentee is able
to accomplish personal and professional growth. These mentoring roles are focused on end ... Show more content on

Thus they search for different ways of carrying out their activities successfully. Also organizations must consider a
range of factors that meet stakeholder s expectations since no organization exists without their cooperation.
Meyer and Herscovitch (2001) argue that commitment is an energy that attracts an individual to behave in
accordance to the importance of a given task. Additionally, they claim that varying levels of dedication result in
different behaviors. Thus, it can be said that commitment also has the potential to affect employees performance and
loyalty to the organizations (Schminke 2011). Although there are many different concepts of the connection between
personal and organizational values, Kristof (as cited in Finegan 2010) has defined it as:
The compatibility between people and organizations that occurs when: (a) at least one entity provides what the other
needs, or (b) they share similar fundamental characteristics, or (c) both (p. 5).
Therefore, the nature and extent of the relationship between organization and stakeholder, and also its dynamics
must be considered in mentoring programs (Pettinger

Fta 215 Word Journal
In this short paper I will go over my thoughts on this week s assigned course reading. This week we were instructed
to read Chapter Four of the FTA 215 course text. This chapter covered Tools, Maintenance, and Repair of the AR 15
platform rifle.
In the beginning of this chapter it was explained to us that Whether you are just interested in performing
maintenance on your AR 15 style rifle, or want to build one from components, you ll need some basic tools. At this
point in the game I probably wouldn t panic if I needed to work on my AR 10... but I definitely still need platform
specific tools. I can t wait to get AR specific tools for our future build. The author then went on to explain to us that
the basic list of tools that we should have on hand to work on an AR 15 platform rifle are as follows Ball peen
hammer, Nylon/brass hammer, Bit driver screwdriver, Torx bit set, Hex bit set, Flat head bits, Phillips head bits,
Needle nose pliers, Lower receiver vise block, Upper receiver vise block set, and a Rifle bench block... as well as a
few other tools. I already have most of those things, but as stated before there are a few things I still need to acquire.
It was nice to touch on cleaning and maintenance once again, because my safe got flooding ... Show more content on

I m sure all the platform specific courses hit on it, but I really wish it was touched on more in the other classes as
well. In this part of the chapter the author made it clear that as a mechanical device the Ar 15 is subject to
malfunction or failure. Of course, you never want to discover a malfunction when you are depending on your
firearm. One way to prevent this is to perform a functions check prior to taking your AR 15 with you for use. As a
former military man... I can attest to the importance of frequent functions checks. I still do them religiously because I
need to know my weapon will go bang if I need

Cell Phone Radiation On Human Brain
The objective of this research is to study the effect of cell phone radiation on human brain. It is known that the cell
phone produces electromagnetic radiation which could be harmful to the human brain. When the phone is placed 5
cm away from the head there is less brain activity compared to when the cell phone is placed next to the ear or head
on either side. Special attention is focused on Temporal and Frontal lobes as these are very close to the ear, which is
call the electromagnetic radiation. The Electromagnetic radiation is measured in terms of specific absorption rate
(SAR). SAR is measured for two common holding positions of mobile phone: Cheek and Tilt. In tilt position, the
mobile phone tilted for 15° and 30° from a person s head. The SAR measured in the Cheek position has much lower
values than of tilt position.
The brain is one of the most important organs of the body that coordinates all the activities. It is divided into three
major parts namely: Cerebrum, Cerebellum, brain stem and diencephalon. Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain.
It covers the diencephalon and is divided into right and left hemisphere longitudinally. Each hemisphere is
subdivided into brain lobes, named as: Frontal lobe, Parietal lobe, Temporal lobe and Occipital lobe.
The effect of SAR majority depends on the antenna position on the mobile phone. A mobile phone with mounted
antenna on top and hold in tilt position results in more absorption of EM radiation by the head. This happens as the
antenna is closer proximity to the head. Moreover, SAR values change with variation of holding position of mobile
phone. Cheek and tilt are two prevalent ways of holding a mobile phone. The electromagnetic fields produced by
mobile phones are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly hazardous to humans
[1]. The radio frequency used for communication can penetrate through semi solid substances, such as living tissue
with a distance proportional to its power density. Research has demonstrated that the short term effect of EM waves
on the human brain [2]. However, the evidence supporting the research is very little for any kind of short or long
term effect.

An Analysis of William Edward Burghardt Du Bois Proposed...
Abstract Education is the most important part of any individual s life. It shapes characters and builds personalities,
introvert and extrovert, pessimistic and optimistic, loving and aggressive. For a better society an improved
educational system is a must, a system based on ethics and knowledge. The paper examines the work and
educational principles of W.E.B. Dubois and then compares his proposed system to the currently prevalent
educational system. Introduction William Edward Burghardt Du Bois is one of the greatest African Americans in
history. He was born, 23rd February 1868 in Massachusetts. Du Bois had an unusual life, in the sense that in his
early years he knew nothing of the racial discrimination prevalent in the South. He lived a life of privilege for a
black in U.S. He faced neither outright discrimination nor economic difficulties. He graduated as a Valedictorian and
the only colored student and even went on to become the first black to secure a doctorate degree in history, from
Harvard. It was during graduation that he got first taste of the racial prejudice prevalent in the American society. He
began educating himself in the history of discrimination. He took a Bachelor s degree from Fisk University, where
he came face to face with racism and frequent lynching or name calling. He vowed to elevate the status of his race
and help solve what he referred to as, the Negro problem. At Fisk he was part of the Mozart society, editor of college

The Jiff Lemon Case
1) Advise Markt whether Markt might be liable to NeemMiracle Ltd in Australia and New Zealand for launching
their neem oil hair care products under the brand name Mira Neem.
Is Markt at risk and liable to NeemMiracle with respect to Trade Mark infringement, passing off, misleading or
deceptive conduct?
No Trade Mark infringement for two reasons;
a) The mark or get up being used by Markt only similar in colour and not necessarily name, the word neem may be
argued to be descriptive. and
b) NeemMiracle has not registered the trademark in either Australia or New Zealand.
There may be a case for passing off under common law and/or misleading and deceptive conduct under S 18 ACL .
An action in passing off deals only with misrepresentation, for an action in passing off to be successful we can refer
to the classical trinity . In the Jiff Lemon Case Lord Oliver set out three tests for an action in passing off to be met.
The classical trinity has been used as a touchstone for passing off.
It can be argued that the getup of the Mira Neem product(s) is adopting a similar style or mark to NeemMiracle with
respect to choice of colour, font and naming of the product; further argued that the confusing labelling of the product
without any disclaimer may misrepresent the Mira Neem product as part of the products currently produced and
marketed by NeemMiracle.
NeemMiracle has a reputation in New Zealand and Australia, NeemMiracle has been in New Zealand since 1990 and

Jerry Mcilmoyle And The Cuban Missile Crisis
Jerry McIlMoyle had a strange feeling. Something in the back of his mind, niggling away, said You need to get out

middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis (dates). He piloted his U 2 plane over the lush island, in search of the sites of
surface to air missiles the Soviets were suspected install. He heard the whir and click of the camera on his plane, so
he turned around. In the sky, he saw two condensation trails contrails from what looked like (missles). Was I shot at?

Who Walked Away From Omelas Analysis
Oscar Wilde once said Wherever there is a man who exercises authority, there is a man who resists authority (Wilde).
In both readings there were authority figures and there were protestors of such authority. In the Milgram Experiment
the man who presented himself in the white lab coat and stood in the same room as the subjects was the authority
figure. The Ones Who Walked Away From Omelas showcased the people in charge of enforcing the rules of the city,
including how the child was supposed to be treated, as the authority figures. Although authority is a very respectable
thing, there are always people who will challenge it. With authority being constantly challenged, the question then, is
what makes it legitimate in the first place?
Authority can be defined in many different ways. The Oxford Dictionary defines authority as the power to give
orders, makes decisions, and enforce obedience (Dictionary). An authoritative figure has the power to give
commands and have them followed out in whichever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although there were many moments of skepticism during the experiments lifespan, the majority people continued
onward instead of finishing early; this appears to have been due to the persistence of the man in the lab coat
encouraging the subjects to continue on with the experiment. With only one third of the population of subjects
stopping the experiment before its completion, the authority of the man in the white coat appears to have been highly
legitimate. Nonetheless, all the man in the white lab coat had over the experiments subjects was that he knew who
the real test subjects were. He had no real power over any of them, and yet, when he spoke his words were almost
always listened to. His authority was only dependent upon whether or not the test subjects would listen to him or not,
only, the subjects were unaware of this during the time of the

How Soda Companies Reduce The Consumption Of Soda Drinks...
After reviewing the problem it is clear that our organization cannot sit back idly and hope for the best. Soda
companies have continued to struggle with the political interference in the market. In the past few years, nations all
over the world have passed taxes on soda beverages. France passed a tax on soda and sales dropped by 3%. In
Mexico, sales dropped by 2% after a similar tax was passed. And though the drops in sales are alarming, it is not
event the biggest threat. Ultimately, the goal of the politicians is to drastically decrease the consumption of soda
drinks. Their attempt to pass these taxes is a power play to make soda beverages viewed as similar to cigarette
companies. It is imperative that we do everything in our power to stop these taxes from occurring. So far we have
been successful in combating taxes in San Francisco and New York City. We have done this through a combination
of business and political actions. Through our research we have been able to come up with a comprehensive list of
strategies to counteract the soda tax. This list can be broken down into two main areas, business actions and political
actions. Political: The political strategies would be utilized to strike down all efforts to pass a soda tax or any other
legislation aimed at reducing the consumption of Coca Cola products. These strategies would include political
marketing, and financial donations. Option 1: Political Marketing In this approach we would attempt to external with

Romeo And Juliet Reflection
Clark, Michael
Mrs.Binion
La11, Period 1
October 2, 2017
Romeo and Juliet, a story about pain and sorrow. A story with ups and downs. Is that why it entertains us? Do we
like to hear about pain and misery and the out come of it, good or bad? Authors have used these stories since
Shakespeare and Logic. Logic is an outlier because of the way he was raised. He has seen people he loves die and
raped in front of him, hated by his mother enough to where she tried to kill him multiple times and how he got out of
it. How he struggled without a high school diploma, the people he met and how they changed his life.
In Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville, Maryland 7:36 A.M., where a biracial baby was born to a black father and
white mother ( Take it Back, Logic) Sir Robert Bryson Hall II was born. His mother was a racist who would beat
him and constantly talk down to him, even trying to kill him one time. His father was out of the picture most of his
life doing drugs that he got from his sons (Logic s Brothers) who were Drug dealers and killers. He watched his
sisters get raped and wasn t able to do anything. It was going down hill until 14 year old Robert met his mentor
Solomon. He showed Robert life outside the ghetto and got him interested into rap, even encouraged him to perform.
When Logic turned 17 he got expelled from high school and moved out of his house. He had to maintain two jobs to
support him and his rap career. While not much he would perform for Pitbull and Ludacris when they came in town.
Trying to do both was working for a while but eventually he couldn t keep up with rent and ended up being homeless
He struggled to live and rap until he met his investor
His name is lenny. Lenny met up with Logic after a concert and told him that he believed in the vision that was
Logic and would fund him, he d give him a year to make it. So Robert did it, he released his first album Young,
Broke, Infamous . Because of how much recognition he made, he released the 1st (out of a trilogy) Young Sinatra.
Later he d release the 2nd and 3rd Young Sinatras. Lil Dicky is a rapper who jokes when he raps. While he can make
a good beat and a sick rap it s not the same as a story which makes the difference in a good rapper.

Adherents of all the world s major faiths believe that their respective religions had a starring role in the very creation

major role in shaping mankind throughout history. Be it as a tool through which to consolidate and administer power

Coming to Secretary of State John Kerry s plan to establish an Office of Religious and Global Affairs this is nothing
short of belated. There is plenty of past legislation that serves as a building block if not a precedent. It was, after all,
all the way back in 1998 that the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) was signed into law, leading to the
state sanctioned promotion of religious freedom overseas.
This is not, of course, to say that there are no potential problems with the creation of this office. Primarily, the
potential overestimation of the role of religion in global affairs. Even back in the 8th century, evidence suggests that
the Iberian Caliphate was no set up on account of pure religious fervor but also as a result of personal ambitions,
power politics, and geopolitical concerns. These same factors, and many more, continue to play a role today. None
should be overlooked through a myopic viewing of the situation through the frame of religion alone.
If one were to assume that all terror is caused by people of the Islamic faith this may well lead to a simplistic ban of
Muslims which could ultimately exasperate the issue of terrorism instead of addressing it. But a complete shift in
thinking where the focus is suddenly shifted unto religion alone is not what is being suggested.
John Kerry has been very clear in his intentions

Comparing The Midsummer s Night Dream And 500 Days Of Summer
Have you wondered what the true meaning of love is? The meaning of love, between Shakespearean time and now?
Or relationships from the past and now? This comparative essay will compare relationships between the play; The
Midsummer s Night Dream, and 500 days of Summer. The comparative essay will compare the relationships
between Tom and Summer versus Theseus and Hippolyta, Tom and friends versus Helena and Hermia, Tom and
Sister versus Egeus and Hermia. Both relationships have a connection of either what the relationship is based upon,
or if the relationships are based on true friendship or love. The following paragraphs will further, compare and
contrast relationships between the film and the play.

marriage compared to Theseus. The theme, of love being forced, and the true meaning of love is unclear in this
relationship. Is true love formed from a battle, or is love formed once facing off against an enemy? Whereas, the

characters are unaware what they re true relationship is based on, and the true meaning of love seems hazy
throughout the film. For instance, Tom praises Summer s good looks and then points out all the negative aspects

Peterloo Revolution
Discussion
Why did Parliament pass a law forbidding the breaking of factory machines?
During the Industrial Revolution, the factory machines decreased the number of workers needed to perform certain
tasks. The extraneous workers were fired, which angered the newly unemployed factory workers. These workers
then rioted in several countries, smashing the machinery that they blamed for their unemployment. The violence
from this frightened Parliament into passing the law forbidding the destruction of factory machines.
What caused the Peterloo massacre?
During the Industrial Revolution, labor unions were illegal in England. However, the times were hard enough that
factory workers decided to join together and fight for better working conditions anyway. ... Show more content on

This led to the French promising assistance to an Irish rebellion. When poor weather prevented a major French
landing, England was able to quell the rebellion, but feared another French invasion by way of Ireland. Hoping to

all of the British Isles as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
William Blake s writing contained aspects of romanticism. Describe William Blake s beliefs and how they affected
his writing?
William Blake was one of several transitionary writers between the Age of Reason and the Age of Romanticism. He
saw the poverty and suffering that surrounded him and was a supporter of the French Revolution in its early days. He
could not accept the neoclassical idea of a stable, orderly hierarchy in the universe, but instead viewed existence as a
blending of opposite poles good and evil, innocence and experience, heaven and hell. His magnum opus Songs of
Innocence and Songs of Experience is the epitome of how his work embodied his beliefs.

Nosocomial Infection
Introduction
Of significant concern is the prevalence of nosocomial infection in acutely and critically ill patients. The mouth
usually provides entry for life prolonging interventions, such as endotracheal intubation for ventilation and
orogastric tubes for enteral nutrition in the ICU. These interventions unfortunately require the patient to maintain an
open mouth and impair the natural airway defenses. This vulnerable position, in combination with other treatments,
can contribute to a fast deteriorating oral condition and a dependence on nursing to alleviate tube related discomfort,
thirst, oral lesions and the accumulation of saliva, sputum and oral bacteria. Colonization of the oropharynx is a
critical factor in the development of nosocomial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elderly institutionalized, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and ICU patients are at higher risk of periodontal
colonization by nosocomial pathogens because of difficulties in oral hygiene, changes in salivary properties, and
reduction of anaerobic flora.7, 8, 9 In ICU patients Oropharyngeal colonization by aerobic pathogens occurs very
rapidly because of incumbent changes in antibacterial resistance, i.e., decreased immunoglobin (Ig) A salivary
content, reduced salivary secretion, mechanical injury induced by nasogastric and endotracheal tubes and mucosal

This paper studies the impact of the commodity futures of the underlying commodity (6 commodities: Alluminium,
Cardamom, Currency, Gold, Pepper and Zinc) on the Spot Market Volatility by using the ARCH/GARCH technique.
The empirical analysis points towards a rise in the spot market volatility (for Aluminium, Gold, Pepper and Currency
and not for Cardamom and Zinc) after the introduction of the futures due to increased impact of information
symmetry. It is found that the underlying commodity responds more to the recent news. The lead lag and causal
relationship between the futures trading activity and spot market volatility is also examined. This is done by using
the GRANGER s CAUSALITY TEST.

Coal Is A Nonrenewable Fossil Fuel
It is clear that our country is approaching turmoil as the population continues to grow and our dependence on
electrical power increases. With limited economic resources at our disposal, we must ensure that future power plants
run on the same primary fuel. With that said, I hope you carefully consider my recommendations, as they are
essential in maintaining the current and future state of our country. Although using coal as our primary energy
resource has minor sociopolitical and scientific complications, the strategies to address these problems and the
social, political, scientific, and economic advantages greatly outweigh the setbacks. While coal is a nonrenewable
fossil fuel, it will still provide our country enough energy to last over 20 years. Coal deposits in our country are
plentiful, making it a more readily available resource than natural gas or nuclear energy. Since we will eventually
extract the coal, it is logical to use it now to fuel our expanding economy. More importantly, the method for
extraction, mountaintop removal mining, is a generally safe approach that presents nominal risks for workers. As a
result, choosing coal as our country s primary fuel resource will diminish sociopolitical backlash. In addition, coal
proves to be extremely economically viable due to its high yield factor, allowing it to produce high amounts of
energy with minimal effort for extraction. By using coal, we are saving the time and money needed to educate and
teach citizens the

account from one employer to the next. An alternative option is the individual retirement accounts (IRAs). In this
case, the individual will set up a personal account with one of the numerous financial corporations or mutual funds

Simplified Employee Pension plan (SEP) where the employer may match the contribution of the employee or not

Archetypal Characters and Symbols in The Phantom of the Opera
The story of The Phantom of the Opera appeals to many types of personalities and people of all ages because of its
archetypal characters and patterns. Carl Jung theorized that we are born with innate tendencies to perceive things a
certain way: a kind of readiness to reproduce over and over again the same or similar mythical ideas . . . 1. These
repeated ideas are archetypes. The basic legend of The Phantom takes place in 19th century Paris, and is that of a
young and talented, but untrained singer named Christine. Erik, the Phantom, is a disfigured genius of many fields,
including music, architecture, magic, and science. His fatal flaw stems from his ... Show more content on

The children s version, meant for 8 to 12 year olds, is the most like the original 1920s Gaston Leroux version. One of
the few things that is changed, other than the overall abbreviation of the novel, is simplification of the language. For
example, Erik begins describing himself by saying, I was ugly. Worse than ugly 3. This straightforward, childlike
language puts the novel at the preteen reading level while preserving Erik s crucial description. The Phantom of the
Opera is the most popular book in Random House Publishing s youth Bullseye Chiller series, above other tales of
vampires, werewolves, mummies, and witches4. Even children can identify with the love triangle among the three
main characters Erik, Christine and Raoul. They probably still pity his unrequited love for Christine, and the way in
which he was mistreated. Night Magic, another adaptation, is much lighter reading and aimed at a different audience
than the more literary variations. Night Magic is the modern day romance version of Phantom, spanning two
decades. Erik becomes a reclusive scarred contractor, and Christine is now Marisa, a spoiled and orphaned teenager
with a beautiful voice. The traditional Erik kills without a thought when he feels threatened, while Erik s most raging
moment in Night Magic consists of him throwing a stool across the room when a client has been flirtatious with
Marisa5. This adaptation is lacking the dangerous side of Erik, so as not to scare

Augustan Poetic Tradition Essay
Augustan Poetic Tradition
I do not in fact see how poetry can survive as a category of human consciousness if it does not put poetic
considerations first expressive considerations, that is, based upon its own genetic laws which spring into operation at
the moment of lyric conception.
Seamus Heaney, The Indefatigable Hoof taps (1988)
Seamus Heaney, the 1995 Nobel laureate, is one of the most widely read and celebrated poets now writing in
English. He is also one of the most traditional. Over a decade ago, Ronald Tamplin summed up Heaney s
achievement and his relation to the literary tradition in a judgment that remains sound today: In many ways he is not
an innovative poet. He has not recast radically the habitual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Heaney, in fact, is one of the most skilled practitioners of traditional verse forms writing at present. And since the
poetic revolution is long over, and unrhymed, unmetered verse free verse has for the better part of the last century
been the norm, one is justified in asking why a serious contemporary poet would be attracted to formal strains that
lost their dominance some time around December 1910.
To answer this question I propose to focus on one of my favorite Heaney poems, The Outlaw, from Door into the
Dark (1969). The poem is written in that most untwentieth century of verse forms, the heroic couplet (that is, rhymed
iambic pentameter couplets: aa, bb, cc, etc.). What would attract Heaney to such an uncontemporary even antiquated
verse form, one that seems so inappropriate for the subject matter of his early poetry? After all, would Harold Pinter
be likely to compose a neoclassical tragedy in the style of Addison s Cato? As I hope to show, the success of Heaney
s poem as brilliant, I think, as the widely anthologized Digging lies in his mastery of the couplet form and
particularly in his exploiting its formal resources for his own poetic purposes. To appreciate this achievement fully,
the reader needs to set the poem not just in relation to the rural Irish themes of Heaney s early poetry, but also and
more importantly in the

Fate In The Play Oedipus By William Winter
Fate is always there. It always has, and it always will be there. We all can choose the decisions we make, but fate
cannot be changed, since it has already been predetermined. What happens will happen, but what changes will not
change fate. Fate is also what changes you, if you think about it. All the events that have happened in the years of
you being alive lead up to today; to who you are. All the decisions you ve made would end up driving fate into
taking its own toll on future, driving up to where you currently are and making you who you are Fate is character
William Winter. In the play Oedipus by Sophocles, Jocasta s (who is Oedipus s wife and mother) character would
wind up changing because of fate. She did not choose for or expect for things to have change in such a negative way.
Jocasta was forced to see her husband figure out that he was married to his mother She begged Oedipus not to go
any further in the search of his true identity. Perhaps she did this because she was romantically in love with Oedipus,
or maybe because she wanted things to stay as they were. This shows that Jocasta is secretive. When she found out

The Gap Between Science And Science Fiction
Science fiction is full of machines that have feelings. In 2001: A Space Odyssey, the onboard computer turns against
the crew of the spaceship Discovery 1, and utters cries of pain and fear when his circuits are finally taken apart. In
Blade Runner, a humanoid robot is distressed to learn that her memories are not real, but have been implanted in her
silicon brain by her programmer. In Bicentennial Man, Robin Williams plays the part of a robot who redesigns his
own circuitry so that he can experience the full range of human feelings. These stories achieve their effect in part
because the capacity for emotion is often considered to be one of the main differences between humans and
machines. This is certainly true of the machines we know today. The responses we receive from computers are rather
dry affairs, such as System error 1378 . People sometimes get angry with their computers and shout at them as if
they had emotions, but the computers take no notice. They neither feel their own feelings, nor recognize yours. The
gap between science fiction and science fact appears vast, but some researchers in artificial intelligence now believe
it is only a question of time before it is bridged.
The new field of affective computing has already made some progress in building primitive emotional machines, and
every month brings new advances. However, some critics argue that a machine could never come to have real
emotions like ours. At best, they claim, clever programming might allow

An Unexamined Life Of Socrates
An Unexamined Life
Lyndsey Emry
PHIL 1381 17 Introduction to Philosophy
Professor Bannister
When studying Socrates, you the reader must come up with your point of view and take what Socrates is trying to
teach into your own approach. You must also think why Socrates choose the words he choose. Socrates careful
choice of words give much color to his quote, an unexamined life is no life for a human being to live. The word
examined for example has many definitions, including: to observe or inspect carefully or critically; to study or
analyze; to check the health or condition of something or someone; to inquire into; et cetera. We could imagine that
Socrates would insist that asking other people what the quote means goes against its very nature. By suggesting this,
Socrates gives praise to questions such as, Is there more to reality than that which we can see and touch? Socrates
also asks, Am I living my life according to my own rules, or the rules set for me by others? Socrates believed that the
purpose of human life was personal and spiritual growth. We are unable to grow toward greater understanding of our
true nature unless we take the time to examine and reflect upon our life. As another philosopher, Santayana,
observed, He who does not remember the past is condemned to repeat it.
So what does Socrates mean when he says, an unexamined life is no life for a human being to live? Well in a more
literal and modern sense, I believe Socrates intended

Power And Power In Arthur Miller s The Crucible
Sometimes people can get lost in their ability to control others, your mom yelling at you to take out the trash or
maybe you pinning your younger sibling down in a wrestling match. It happens to us all, even if you do not realize.
It all comes with our ingrained desire for this thing we call power. This desire plagues every society, those of the past
and present. For example, in the 1960s an author named Arthur Miller saw his society falling victim to this plague,
so he wrote a play. Miller shows us throughout The Crucible that power and the desire for it is a disease that spreads
in communities and cripples them, we see this through the actions of Abigail, Danforth, and Parris. Parris is a great
example of a ground zero patient, from the start of the play we see him claw for more and more political and
material power. Miller wastes no time showing Parris concern with his power and how people perceive it. But if you
trafficked with the spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it
(Miller 10). Here we see Parris worrying about his ego while his daughter is lying ill on the bed next to him. This
theme continues throughout the play and becomes worse as we get to know him more. His concern with ego goes
hand in hand with our idea of power; with a tainted ego he will lose his power. His constant concern with these
illusory concepts he loses his path and begins to lead others down it, Like Danforth. Danforth

Disorders in Hawethornes The Birthmark Essay
In Nathaniel Hawthorne s story The Birthmark you find a couple fairly prevalent disorders. Although psychology
was as of yet not existence, Hawthorne describes them quite well. Alymer suffered from an obsessive compulsive
personality disorder, while his actions caused Georgiana to develop a body dysmorphic disorder. Both of which
attributed to the eventual demise of Georgiana.
Alymer is an older scientist who marries a beautiful woman much younger then himself. Even though Alymer finds
his young bride beautiful, he still says that she is marked. Upon Georgiana s left cheek is a birthmark. The birthmark
is small, red, and in the shape of a hand. Alymer believes that this mark takes away from her beauty; ... Show more

That could be attributed to Hawthorne s background, and the era in which this story was written. Other qualities
which he exhibits are perfectionism, excessive devotion to work, and miserliness toward others.
Alymer first shows his perfectionism when he tells Georgiana that she quot;came so nearly perfect, and calls the
birthmark, a visible mark of earthly imperfection. (Hawthorne 306) He wishes to have the perfect wife. And
Georgiana is young and beautiful. But she has her birthmark which disturbs Alymer greatly. After giving the liquid to
his wife, Alymer exclaims, [ . . . ] You are perfect! (Hawthorne 316) Another sign that he was a perfectionist was the
fact he kept such a detailed record of his work over the years. It is not the fact that the books themselves exist, but
that Alymer was not truly satisfied with his work:
[. . .] she could not [help] but observe that his most splendid successes were almost invariably failures, if compared
with the ideal at which he aimed. His brightest diamonds were the merest pebbles, [ . . . ]. (Hawthorne 313)
The second attribute of obsessive compulsive personality disorder that Alymer displays is excessive working. Since
he is such a perfectionist in his science, it s obvious that he spends the majority of his time in his lab. This doesn t
leave much time for a social life. Because Alymer is preoccupied with work, this causes him to be miserly toward

The Theme Of Dreams In The Crossover
In The Crossover written by Kwame Alexander, there are many themes that readers can find in the novel. One of the
themes is that dream is very important for one to live a better life. This is also the theme in the poem Dreams written
by Langston Hughes. Having one s own dream is very important because the process of achieving the dream is more
of value than the result itself. Dreams can enrich people s lives and lighten their inside world. In The Crossover, Josh
Bell is fond of playing basketball and his dream is to go to the University of Duke. In order to reach his goal, he
practices so hard in school and home. I let him win and get ready to practice harder, (Alexander 57). The coach says
one who runs the fastest does not need to practice. Josh Bell is the quickest on the team; however, he deliberately
lets Vondie win. This is because he wants to practice more and become stronger than anyone else on the team. It is
an example of how Josh tries to make his dream come true. In the process of realizing his dreams, Josh not only
improves his basketball skills, but he also fulfills his life by making friends with his teammates. In the poem
Dreams, the writer says that Hold fast to dreams/ For when dreams go/ Life is a barren field/ Frozen with snow,
(Hughes 5 8). These lines show that dream is what brings people joy of life. If one does not have his own dream to
realize, one will not feel any passion in life. According to the two pieces of text, dream lightens people s

key tools, one can create an organization as a whole consisting of unified parts acting in harmony to achieve goals,

There are many examples of rules in the movie, but I am going to talk about one particular incident. In beginning of

Mary Shelley Is The Author Of The Famed Novel Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley is the author of the famed novel Frankenstein. The era in which Frankenstein was published happened
to be one where religion was followed in more of a strict manner than today s society follows. The monster in the
novel was viewed as an abomination not only in its existence, but even as an idea. Although the novel was released
unanimously, it was critiqued mostly from a religious standpoint. Critiques gave reviews saying that it was

Mary never knew her mother because she died a few days after childbirth, and the woman that her father remarried
to was not an ideal or loving mother figure. She and Shelley did not get along at all. Once she came into the picture,
Mary did not enjoy her life at home. She loved her little family, but she yearned to get away from all of their chaos.
That s why she would go and read or write by her mother s grave or in any other calm place she could find. That s
also why she created Frankenstein s mother to be so loving, gentle, patient, and nurturing. She made Frankenstein s
mother based off of the way she viewed her own departed mother in her head, and the way that Frankenstein
suddenly wanted to prevent death and disease because of her death was probably what Shelley wished she could
have done for the mother she never knew.
Mary also used many of her mother s beliefs in the novel. Wollstonecraft had a very hard life in her early days. She
lived in a financially unstable home and was taken over by domestic abuse and alcohol addiction. Motivated by the
life she once endured, he decided to support herself as a professional writer rather than remaining dependent on

Chemical Mental Enhancement
Chemical Mental Enhancement:
Changing the Direction of the Psyche Throughout history, mankind has always been interested in getting more of
anything to the point at which some go absolutely insane. For example, mankind has not been totally satisfied with
the human mind and its natural capabilities, which has led to countless attempts of manipulation. This manipulation
of the psyche, a partially uncharted topic of human knowledge, can be triggered through certain chemicals. These
chemicals have helped and stimulated the minds of many who use them properly, but have also hurt and depressed
many who have used them improperly. Those that intermeddle with the brain s functions through chemical mental
enhancement are clearly affected and show how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This damage stems from the fact that people often abuse modern day chemicals or take certain kinds that make them
feel good . A popular feel good chemical is LSD, which is mostly used for major hallucinations. Individuals crave
hallucinations for their own reasons, but all have the same effects of gradually poisoning the psyche and the body.
HowStuffWorks author Shanna Freeman explains in How LSD Works (2008) that the hallucinogen can have serious
negative effects, including paranoia, psychosis, and increased rates of suicide. Also, she explains that LSD can
trigger acid flashbacks , which occur years after using the chemical. Clearly, there are no true benefits of LSD usage.
Unfortunately, after being introduced into society, the psychoactive chemical trickled down to the young, developing
members of society. According to statistics, a survey given to 17,000 high school students revealed

Pest Control and Pesticides A pest is a plant, animal or microorganism that spreads diseases to humans, domestic
animals, wildlife and plants or competes with humans, domestic animals, wildlife or desirable plants for food or

making efforts to control these various types of pests. Early control measures used chalk, plant extracts, mercury,
arsenic, lead and other compounds. Over time people have also attempted to control pests through sacrifices,
prayers, rituals, dancing, and other approaches (592). While some cultures throughout the world continue to do so.

Eighty percent of U.S. households use pesticides more than once per year in and around their homes. Many of the
pesticides applied indoors are semivolatile. Once applied, semivolatile pesticides can vaporize from treated surfaces
and can distribute in and on targeted and nontargeted surfaces and objects (613). This is of specific concern because
most Americans including children can spend up to 90 percent of their time indoors where pesticides have been
applied. Given Children s inherent biological vulnerabilities and characteristic behaviors, which are different from
those of adults, children can be particularly susceptible to the effects of pesticides

A separate peace essay
In a separate peace, by John Knowles, Gene Forrester is the protagonist. He is a 17 year old boy who goes to devon
boarding school, and is friends with Finny. Finny is a kind, athletic, and naive student who s best friend is Gene.
These two friends seem to love each other, but most of the time are hiding a secret jealousy and hatred for one
another. Gene said, my war ended ended before I even put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I
killed my enemy there.(Pg. 110) In an essay about a separate peace, the author said, in relation to the prior quote,
One of the things the novelist seems to be saying is that the enemy Gene killed, and loved, is the one every man must
kill; his own youth, the innocence that burns too hotly to be endured. The writer of this essay is referring to a
different enemy innocence then Gene, and although his example is plausible, it isn t the same as what Gene was
referring to. Gene was referring to his enemy that he pretends to be friends with, Finny. This can be supported by
Gene and Finny s love/hate relationship, The competitiveness that Gene and Finny had between each other, and how
Gene was part of the reason that Finny died at the end of the novel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gene was not referring to the killing of his own youth during his time at Devon boarding school, but the war

and jealous of one another. An example of this would be when Gene suspected Finny of trying to compete with him
for class valedictorian, which Finny shrugged

Lizard Adaptations
Josiah
Lizards
The lizard is a fascinating creature. Lizards vary in size, shape, ability, dietary needs, habitat, and mating. For
instance, the Komodo dragon is bigger than a gecko, needs more food to eat, and eats a different source of food. The
iguana will live near the water, while a ruin lizard will live in grassy fields, parks, or gardens. Nonetheless all these
animals are still lizards. It is intriguing to learn about the habitats, predators, and characteristics of lizards.
Lizards have different habitats some choose sunny places to put their homes, while others will live in shady spots.
Then there are the lizards that live in the dessert where it is nice and hot, but they live under shelving or loose rocks
because they need some protection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most lizards that live in the shade will have smooth and soft skin. This will help the lizard crawl through tight spots.
If the lizard is a chameleon then it will have a specialized tail and feet. Their tail is a prehensile tail, this means that
they can use their tail to curl around a branch; their feet are also special because they can use them to grip tightly to a
branch. Chameleons live in trees, but they do not have soft skin; they have hard skin and horns for protection, along
with their ability to camouflage (Bishop, 22, 26).
The lizard is not friends with everybody. There are animals that when they see a lizard they do not see the cute or
cool animal that we see; they see a snack, or dinner depending on the animal. These animals consist of birds, snakes,
or even other lizards (Knopf, 487 580). When a lizard notices a snake slithering through the ground, it most likely
will not try to fight it. Now that is depending on the size of the snake and the lizard. Obviously, if the lizard is a lot
bigger than the snake then it will fight, or the snake will just turn away. If the snake is bigger than the lizard, then
most likely the lizard will dash away or climb up a tree. Some lizards will actually stand still, so that way they are
not noticed by the snake. (Bishop,

Using Parallel Processing For Large Scale Database Analysis
Modern Data Centers always interested in the new technology for various web search analysis, web log, bigdata
analysis, social networking, so in this tasks new technology implemented using parallel processing for large scale
database analysis, so the MapReduce is one of new technology to get amounts of data, perform massive
computation, and extract critical knowledge out of big data for business intelligence, proper analysis of large scale of
datasets, it requires accurate input output capacity from the large server systems to perform and analyze weblog data
which is derived from two steps called mapping and reducing. Between these two steps, MapReduce requires a on
important phase called shuffling phase which exchange the intermediate data. So at the point of data shuffling, by
physically changing the location(moving) segments of intermediate data across disks, causes major I/O contention
and generate the Input/Output problem such as large power consumption, high heat generation which accounts for a
large portion of the operating cost of data centers in analyzing such big data. So in this synopsis we introduce the
new virtual shuffling approach to enable well organized data movement and reduce I/O problem for MapReduce
shuffling, thereby reducing power consumption and conserving energy. Virtual shuffling is achieved through a
combination of three techniques including a three level segment table, near demand merging, and dynamic and
balanced merging subtrees. Our

  • 2. Operations Management Homework 1. What is the best way to increase value the most, given the following information for one customer? Base Case: Perceived benefits $50 and Price $10.00 Improvement Option A: Perceived benefits $65 and Price $13.00 Improvement Option B: Perceived benefits $65 and Price $12.50 Improvement Option C: Perceived benefits $60 and Price $12.50 We derive the following (using the formula, value = perceived benefits / price (cost) to the customer): * Base Case: value = (50/10) = 5 * Option A: value = (65/13) = 5 * Option B: value = (65/12.50) = 5.20 * Option C: value = (60/12.50) = 4.80 The option B is the best way to increase value the most (but the cost to the customer is higher, and the perceived benefit as well). ... What is the average value of a loyal customer (VLC) in a target market segment if the average purchase price is $75 per visit, the frequency of repurchase is six times per year, the contribution margin is 10 percent, and the average customer defection rate is 25 percent? Using the formula: VLC = (P) (RF) (CM) (BLC) VLC = (75) (6) (10%) (1/0.25) VLC = $180.00 The average value of a loyal customer (VLC) is $180.00. 12. • 3. Toyota Financial Analysis Paper Introduction For my project I have chosen a Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) – an international automobile manufacturer. In addition, Toyota provides retail and wholesale financing, retail leasing and certain other financial services primarily to its dealers and their customers related to vehicles manufactured by Toyota. The major portions of Toyota s operations on a worldwide basis are derived from the Automotive and Financial Services business segments. The Company also has an All Other segment, which includes its non automotive business activities. The most significant of Toyota s other operations are its information technology (IT) related businesses and pre fabricated housing. The company was established in 1937. The Toyota group ... Toyota has already begun the separation process. However, no effect of this transaction has been recognized in the consolidated financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2003 as the completion of the transfer of the benefit obligation and related plan assets to the Japanese government is expected in the year ending March 31, 2004. TMC enters only in business interactions with its business partners, contract suppliers and affiliated companies. There were no errors or irregularities reported for the TMC for the year ended March 31, 2003. There were some factors that could influence the future operations of the company. TMC was involved in various pending and settled court proceedings that could have an impact in the future. I will describe only the most important ones: 1. In February 2003 Toyota ... • 4. The Four Roles Of Mentoring And Mentoring In The Odyssey The origin of the term mentor dates back to the near end of 18th century BC, when the Greek epic poem Odyssey, written by Homer, is believed to have been composed. As the main character, Odysseus, embarks in a 20 year long journey, he asks his friend, Mentor, to guide his son during his absence. Mentor accepts it, and acts as a father figure, teacher, role model, leader, and friend to Telemachus (Online Etymology Dictionary). Modern interpretations of mentoring pinpoint four distinct roles which mentors are expected to play: role modeling, sponsorship, coaching, and counseling the mentee. These many roles are played by the mentor so the mentee is able to accomplish personal and professional growth. These mentoring roles are focused on end ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus they search for different ways of carrying out their activities successfully. Also organizations must consider a range of factors that meet stakeholder s expectations since no organization exists without their cooperation. Meyer and Herscovitch (2001) argue that commitment is an energy that attracts an individual to behave in accordance to the importance of a given task. Additionally, they claim that varying levels of dedication result in different behaviors. Thus, it can be said that commitment also has the potential to affect employees performance and loyalty to the organizations (Schminke 2011). Although there are many different concepts of the connection between personal and organizational values, Kristof (as cited in Finegan 2010) has defined it as: The compatibility between people and organizations that occurs when: (a) at least one entity provides what the other needs, or (b) they share similar fundamental characteristics, or (c) both (p. 5). Therefore, the nature and extent of the relationship between organization and stakeholder, and also its dynamics must be considered in mentoring programs (Pettinger ... • 5. Fta 215 Word Journal In this short paper I will go over my thoughts on this week s assigned course reading. This week we were instructed to read Chapter Four of the FTA 215 course text. This chapter covered Tools, Maintenance, and Repair of the AR 15 platform rifle. In the beginning of this chapter it was explained to us that Whether you are just interested in performing maintenance on your AR 15 style rifle, or want to build one from components, you ll need some basic tools. At this point in the game I probably wouldn t panic if I needed to work on my AR 10... but I definitely still need platform specific tools. I can t wait to get AR specific tools for our future build. The author then went on to explain to us that the basic list of tools that we should have on hand to work on an AR 15 platform rifle are as follows Ball peen hammer, Nylon/brass hammer, Bit driver screwdriver, Torx bit set, Hex bit set, Flat head bits, Phillips head bits, Needle nose pliers, Lower receiver vise block, Upper receiver vise block set, and a Rifle bench block... as well as a few other tools. I already have most of those things, but as stated before there are a few things I still need to acquire. It was nice to touch on cleaning and maintenance once again, because my safe got flooding ... Of course, you never want to discover a malfunction when you are depending on your firearm. One way to prevent this is to perform a functions check prior to taking your AR 15 with you for use. As a former military man... I can attest to the importance of frequent functions checks. I still do them religiously because I need to know my weapon will go bang if I need ... • 6. Cell Phone Radiation On Human Brain The objective of this research is to study the effect of cell phone radiation on human brain. It is known that the cell phone produces electromagnetic radiation which could be harmful to the human brain. When the phone is placed 5 cm away from the head there is less brain activity compared to when the cell phone is placed next to the ear or head on either side. Special attention is focused on Temporal and Frontal lobes as these are very close to the ear, which is call the electromagnetic radiation. The Electromagnetic radiation is measured in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR). SAR is measured for two common holding positions of mobile phone: Cheek and Tilt. In tilt position, the mobile phone tilted for 15° and 30° from a person s head. The SAR measured in the Cheek position has much lower values than of tilt position. The brain is one of the most important organs of the body that coordinates all the activities. It is divided into three major parts namely: Cerebrum, Cerebellum, brain stem and diencephalon. Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It covers the diencephalon and is divided into right and left hemisphere longitudinally. Each hemisphere is subdivided into brain lobes, named as: Frontal lobe, Parietal lobe, Temporal lobe and Occipital lobe. The effect of SAR majority depends on the antenna position on the mobile phone. A mobile phone with mounted antenna on top and hold in tilt position results in more absorption of EM radiation by the head. This happens as the antenna is closer proximity to the head. Moreover, SAR values change with variation of holding position of mobile phone. Cheek and tilt are two prevalent ways of holding a mobile phone. The electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly hazardous to humans [1]. The radio frequency used for communication can penetrate through semi solid substances, such as living tissue with a distance proportional to its power density. Research has demonstrated that the short term effect of EM waves on the human brain [2]. However, the evidence supporting the research is very little for any kind of short or long term effect. Total high energy values were recorded in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. An Analysis of William Edward Burghardt Du Bois Proposed... Abstract Education is the most important part of any individual s life. It shapes characters and builds personalities, introvert and extrovert, pessimistic and optimistic, loving and aggressive. For a better society an improved educational system is a must, a system based on ethics and knowledge. The paper examines the work and educational principles of W.E.B. Dubois and then compares his proposed system to the currently prevalent educational system. Introduction William Edward Burghardt Du Bois is one of the greatest African Americans in history. He was born, 23rd February 1868 in Massachusetts. Du Bois had an unusual life, in the sense that in his early years he knew nothing of the racial discrimination prevalent in the South. He lived a life of privilege for a black in U.S. He faced neither outright discrimination nor economic difficulties. He graduated as a Valedictorian and the only colored student and even went on to become the first black to secure a doctorate degree in history, from Harvard. It was during graduation that he got first taste of the racial prejudice prevalent in the American society. He began educating himself in the history of discrimination. He took a Bachelor s degree from Fisk University, where he came face to face with racism and frequent lynching or name calling. He vowed to elevate the status of his race and help solve what he referred to as, the Negro problem. At Fisk he was part of the Mozart society, editor of college newspaper and a ... The Jiff Lemon Case 1) Advise Markt whether Markt might be liable to NeemMiracle Ltd in Australia and New Zealand for launching their neem oil hair care products under the brand name Mira Neem. Is Markt at risk and liable to NeemMiracle with respect to Trade Mark infringement, passing off, misleading or deceptive conduct? No Trade Mark infringement for two reasons; a) The mark or get up being used by Markt only similar in colour and not necessarily name, the word neem may be argued to be descriptive. and b) NeemMiracle has not registered the trademark in either Australia or New Zealand. There may be a case for passing off under common law and/or misleading and deceptive conduct under S 18 ACL . An action in passing off deals only with misrepresentation, for an action in passing off to be successful we can refer to the classical trinity . In the Jiff Lemon Case Lord Oliver set out three tests for an action in passing off to be met. The classical trinity has been used as a touchstone for passing off. It can be argued that the getup of the Mira Neem product(s) is adopting a similar style or mark to NeemMiracle with respect to choice of colour, font and naming of the product; further argued that the confusing labelling of the product without any disclaimer may misrepresent the Mira Neem product as part of the products currently produced and marketed by NeemMiracle. • 11. Who Walked Away From Omelas Analysis Oscar Wilde once said Wherever there is a man who exercises authority, there is a man who resists authority (Wilde). In both readings there were authority figures and there were protestors of such authority. In the Milgram Experiment the man who presented himself in the white lab coat and stood in the same room as the subjects was the authority figure. The Ones Who Walked Away From Omelas showcased the people in charge of enforcing the rules of the city, including how the child was supposed to be treated, as the authority figures. Although authority is a very respectable thing, there are always people who will challenge it. With authority being constantly challenged, the question then, is what makes it legitimate in the first place? Authority can be defined in many different ways. The Oxford Dictionary defines authority as the power to give orders, makes decisions, and enforce obedience (Dictionary). • 12. How Soda Companies Reduce The Consumption Of Soda Drinks... After reviewing the problem it is clear that our organization cannot sit back idly and hope for the best. Soda companies have continued to struggle with the political interference in the market. In the past few years, nations all over the world have passed taxes on soda beverages. France passed a tax on soda and sales dropped by 3%. In Mexico, sales dropped by 2% after a similar tax was passed. And though the drops in sales are alarming, it is not event the biggest threat. Ultimately, the goal of the politicians is to drastically decrease the consumption of soda drinks. Their attempt to pass these taxes is a power play to make soda beverages viewed as similar to cigarette companies. It is imperative that we do everything in our power to stop these taxes from occurring. So far we have been successful in combating taxes in San Francisco and New York City. We have done this through a combination of business and political actions. Through our research we have been able to come up with a comprehensive list of strategies to counteract the soda tax. This list can be broken down into two main areas, business actions and political actions. Political: The political strategies would be utilized to strike down all efforts to pass a soda tax or any other legislation aimed at reducing the consumption of Coca Cola products. These strategies would include political marketing, and financial donations. Option 1: Political Marketing In this approach we would attempt to external with our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His mother was a racist who would beat him and constantly talk down to him, even trying to kill him one time. His father was out of the picture most of his life doing drugs that he got from his sons (Logic s Brothers) who were Drug dealers and killers. He watched his sisters get raped and wasn t able to do anything. It was going down hill until 14 year old Robert met his mentor Solomon. He showed Robert life outside the ghetto and got him interested into rap, even encouraged him to perform. When Logic turned 17 he got expelled from high school and moved out of his house. He had to maintain two jobs to support him and his rap career. While not much he would perform for Pitbull and Ludacris when they came in town. Trying to do both was working for a while but eventually he couldn t keep up with rent and ended up being homeless He struggled to live and rap until he met his investor His name is lenny. Lenny met up with Logic after a concert and told him that he believed in the vision that was Logic and would fund him, he d give him a year to make it. Coming to Secretary of State John Kerry s plan to establish an Office of Religious and Global Affairs this is nothing short of belated. There is plenty of past legislation that serves as a building block if not a precedent. It was, after all, all the way back in 1998 that the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) was signed into law, leading to the state sanctioned promotion of religious freedom overseas. This is not, of course, to say that there are no potential problems with the creation of this office. Primarily, the potential overestimation of the role of religion in global affairs. Even back in the 8th century, evidence suggests that the Iberian Caliphate was no set up on account of pure religious fervor but also as a result of personal ambitions, power politics, and geopolitical concerns. These same factors, and many more, continue to play a role today. None should be overlooked through a myopic viewing of the situation through the frame of religion alone. If one were to assume that all terror is caused by people of the Islamic faith this may well lead to a simplistic ban of Muslims which could ultimately exasperate the issue of terrorism instead of addressing it. But a complete shift in thinking where the focus is suddenly shifted unto religion alone is not what is being suggested. John Kerry has been very clear in his intentions ... With limited economic resources at our disposal, we must ensure that future power plants run on the same primary fuel. With that said, I hope you carefully consider my recommendations, as they are essential in maintaining the current and future state of our country. Although using coal as our primary energy resource has minor sociopolitical and scientific complications, the strategies to address these problems and the social, political, scientific, and economic advantages greatly outweigh the setbacks. While coal is a nonrenewable fossil fuel, it will still provide our country enough energy to last over 20 years. Coal deposits in our country are plentiful, making it a more readily available resource than natural gas or nuclear energy. Since we will eventually extract the coal, it is logical to use it now to fuel our expanding economy. More importantly, the method for extraction, mountaintop removal mining, is a generally safe approach that presents nominal risks for workers. As a result, choosing coal as our country s primary fuel resource will diminish sociopolitical backlash. And since the poetic revolution is long over, and unrhymed, unmetered verse free verse has for the better part of the last century been the norm, one is justified in asking why a serious contemporary poet would be attracted to formal strains that lost their dominance some time around December 1910. To answer this question I propose to focus on one of my favorite Heaney poems, The Outlaw, from Door into the Dark (1969). The poem is written in that most untwentieth century of verse forms, the heroic couplet (that is, rhymed iambic pentameter couplets: aa, bb, cc, etc.). What would attract Heaney to such an uncontemporary even antiquated verse form, one that seems so inappropriate for the subject matter of his early poetry? After all, would Harold Pinter be likely to compose a neoclassical tragedy in the style of Addison s Cato? As I hope to show, the success of Heaney s poem as brilliant, I think, as the widely anthologized Digging lies in his mastery of the couplet form and particularly in his exploiting its formal resources for his own poetic purposes. To appreciate this achievement fully, the reader needs to set the poem not just in relation to the rural Irish themes of Heaney s early poetry, but also and more importantly in the ... In 2001: A Space Odyssey, the onboard computer turns against the crew of the spaceship Discovery 1, and utters cries of pain and fear when his circuits are finally taken apart. In Blade Runner, a humanoid robot is distressed to learn that her memories are not real, but have been implanted in her silicon brain by her programmer. In Bicentennial Man, Robin Williams plays the part of a robot who redesigns his own circuitry so that he can experience the full range of human feelings. These stories achieve their effect in part because the capacity for emotion is often considered to be one of the main differences between humans and machines. This is certainly true of the machines we know today. The responses we receive from computers are rather dry affairs, such as System error 1378 . People sometimes get angry with their computers and shout at them as if they had emotions, but the computers take no notice. They neither feel their own feelings, nor recognize yours. You must also think why Socrates choose the words he choose. Socrates careful choice of words give much color to his quote, an unexamined life is no life for a human being to live. The word examined for example has many definitions, including: to observe or inspect carefully or critically; to study or analyze; to check the health or condition of something or someone; to inquire into; et cetera. We could imagine that Socrates would insist that asking other people what the quote means goes against its very nature. By suggesting this, Socrates gives praise to questions such as, Is there more to reality than that which we can see and touch? Socrates also asks, Am I living my life according to my own rules, or the rules set for me by others? Socrates believed that the purpose of human life was personal and spiritual growth. We are unable to grow toward greater understanding of our true nature unless we take the time to examine and reflect upon our life. Power And Power In Arthur Miller s The Crucible Sometimes people can get lost in their ability to control others, your mom yelling at you to take out the trash or maybe you pinning your younger sibling down in a wrestling match. It happens to us all, even if you do not realize. It all comes with our ingrained desire for this thing we call power. This desire plagues every society, those of the past and present. For example, in the 1960s an author named Arthur Miller saw his society falling victim to this plague, so he wrote a play. Miller shows us throughout The Crucible that power and the desire for it is a disease that spreads in communities and cripples them, we see this through the actions of Abigail, Danforth, and Parris. Parris is a great example of a ground zero patient, from the start of the play we see him claw for more and more political and material power. Miller wastes no time showing Parris concern with his power and how people perceive it. But if you trafficked with the spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it (Miller 10). Here we see Parris worrying about his ego while his daughter is lying ill on the bed next to him. This theme continues throughout the play and becomes worse as we get to know him more. • 34. The Theme Of Dreams In The Crossover In The Crossover written by Kwame Alexander, there are many themes that readers can find in the novel. One of the themes is that dream is very important for one to live a better life. This is also the theme in the poem Dreams written by Langston Hughes. Having one s own dream is very important because the process of achieving the dream is more of value than the result itself. Dreams can enrich people s lives and lighten their inside world. In The Crossover, Josh Bell is fond of playing basketball and his dream is to go to the University of Duke. In order to reach his goal, he practices so hard in school and home. I let him win and get ready to practice harder, (Alexander 57). The coach says one who runs the fastest does not need to practice. Josh Bell is the quickest on the team; however, he deliberately lets Vondie win. This is because he wants to practice more and become stronger than anyone else on the team. It is an example of how Josh tries to make his dream come true. In the process of realizing his dreams, Josh not only improves his basketball skills, but he also fulfills his life by making friends with his teammates. In the poem Dreams, the writer says that Hold fast to dreams/ For when dreams go/ Life is a barren field/ Frozen with snow, (Hughes 5 8). These lines show that dream is what brings people joy of life. If one does not have his own dream to realize, one will not feel any passion in life. Many find the Grimm s fairy tales dark, yet Donald Barthelme s modern retelling of the classic Snow White is so extreme to the point it emphasizes the flaws of society s view of Disney s Snow White; John Pizer, who wrote the article The Disenchantment of Snow White states that rather a satirical piece, Barthelme s Snow White can even be labelled as an anti fairy tale. Though Barthelme introduces his Snow White similarly to the classic tale in which he states hair is black as ebony, the skin white as snow, the very first description of her immediately disconnects Disney s Snow White from Barthelme s. Barthelme first introduces Snow White with having many beauty spots, which is already a severance since Snow White has always been considered flawless inside and outside. If the lizard is a chameleon then it will have a specialized tail and feet. Their tail is a prehensile tail, this means that they can use their tail to curl around a branch; their feet are also special because they can use them to grip tightly to a branch. Chameleons live in trees, but they do not have soft skin; they have hard skin and horns for protection, along with their ability to camouflage (Bishop, 22, 26). The lizard is not friends with everybody. There are animals that when they see a lizard they do not see the cute or cool animal that we see; they see a snack, or dinner depending on the animal. These animals consist of birds, snakes, or even other lizards (Knopf, 487 580). When a lizard notices a snake slithering through the ground, it most likely will not try to fight it. Now that is depending on the size of the snake and the lizard. Obviously, if the lizard is a lot bigger than the snake then it will fight, or the snake will just turn away.
