How do living things interact

Chapter 3 lesson 1
How many habitats can u find in this picture ?
Eco System
An ecosystem has
many habitats for
many animals .
Can you only see living things in the ecosystem ?
Sun
a place where living and non living things interact .
 The ecosystem can be big like an ocean or small like a pond.
 It can be wet like the sea or dry like the desert.
Ecosystem
Ecosystem
Living things Non-Living things
• Animals
• Plants
• Water
• Sun & air
• Soil
Let’s make our own ecosystem !!
Put 2 living things + 2 non-living things in your ecosystem
We know that All living things need :
Food Water Shelter
All living things need food to get energy.
but where do they get their food from ?
Living things
Producers Consumers
Decomposers
Produce their own food Eat other animals or plants
Eat Dead animals or plants.
Where do plants get their food from ?
Plants produce their own food
, using the sun’s energy .
That’s why they’re called
Producers
Producers
 All plants are producers.
Algae Water plants
grass
trees
Consumers
A panda eats plants like
bamboo or animals like : fish
A lion eats other animals .
All animals can NOT make their own food like plants, they get their energy by
consuming (eating) other animals or plants .
All animals are called consumers .
Dinosaurs were extinct along time ago, so we only saw their skeletons.
BUT, where did their body go ?
Decomposers
• worm and bacteria feed on the dead bodies of animals and
plants .
• They are called Decomposers.
Worms Bacteria
Fungus is also a
decomposer .
Decomposers feed on
dead animals and plants.
Decomposers
Decomposers like worms and bacteria break down the bodies of dead animals and
plants, and return the nutrients back to the soil.
What would happen without decomposers ?
Without them, piles of dead
plants and animals would build
up and cover the earth !!
Producer
Consumers
Decomposers
Let’s play a game !!

 All consumers get energy by eating other animals or plants .
 Some consumers only eat plants
 Other consumers only eat animals
 Others can eat both plants and animals

Carnivore
 There are 3 groups of consumers named according to what they eat !!

Carnivores
 Carnivores only eat other animals.
MEAT
Herbivores
 Herbivores only eat plants.
PLANTS
Omnivores
 Omnivores eat both plants and meat of other animals.

Prey and predator
 A consumer can be a predator or a prey.
Predator Prey
Consumers that eat the prey . Consumers that are eaten .
In these pictures the predators are :
• The Wild cat
• The Eagle
• The Cheetah
In these pictures the preys are :
• The Rabbit
• The Fish
• The Gazelle
An animal can be a prey and a predator too !!
 In the first picture the snake was a prey , but in the 2nd picture it’s the predator .
Predator Prey
Eagle Snake

Snake Mouse
How many predators and preys can you find here ?

When the eagle dies the
Decomposers will breakdown the
body and turn it into nutrients.
The food chain
 Show the flow of energy from one living organism to another .

When the lion dies the
Decomposers will breakdown the
body and turn it into nutrients.
Energy
Nutrients
All food chains always Begin with a producer.
Food web
 In an ecosystem you can see many animals
eating the Same plant or the same animal.
 This will form a Food web made of many
Food chains connected together.
Food web :
Made up of many food
chains connected together .
Interdependency: Every organism depends on other organisms to survive.
 What would happen if one living organism disappeared ?
 Example : if the grass didn’t get any sunlight.
Grass dies > grasshopper dies > rat dies >snake dies > hawk dies
