pieces of art and old artifacts on display. One of the art pieces that caught my eye was the Head
of a Ruler, from ancient Iranian or Mesopotamian times. I chose this figure because the person
depicted in the copper head looked like an important figure of the time. The man is well
groomed and has an emotionless face, but it also looks like he is portraying a little confidence
in his expressionless face. Considering this is a copper statue, I think it is safe to say it was not
completed in a short amount of time, leaving me to wonder if the man posed for the figure.
Whether he posed for it or not, it still gives off the vibe that he held a high title in society. There
was no indication on the display of who the man was or what his role was, only assumptions that

shaped the way the medical field is being viewed today. Gurdon Buck, also known as the father of
modern plastic surgery, is recognized for being the first doctor to include pre and post operative
photographs into his publications. Doctor Buck is acknowledged for being the first person to
photograph the development of his operations and the first to make steady changes over several
operations. Gurdon Buck is also given credit to for the use of tiny sutures he used during his
operations that would minimize scarring. Doctor Buck has made it possible for several surgeries
to take place today because of the knowledge he has passed on. Some of these surgeries include
cleft palate and lip repair. With Gurdon performing so many challenging surgeries, he coined a

Writer , Linda Thomas, in her essay, Brush Fire, discusses the Santa Ana winds experienced in
Southern California and how it affects the people and the weather. Well known essayist , Joan
Didion, in her essay, The Santa Ana, describes the winds and the effects it has on the way the
people behave. Both Thomas and Didion s essayshave a similar subject and circumstance, the Santa
Ana winds but, both essays vary in numerous ways. The details, tone, and how the message is
being told are ways in which both essays differ. These essays are an example of one topic being
portray through different lights.
In Brush Fire, Thomas begins to convey recollected memories of a day on which she experienced
the Santa Ana winds. She tells the details in chronological order starting from the moment she
woke up and ended in the present tense. Thomas stated, I know this because this morning I awoke
to air so dry that the graze of my nightgown against the down comforter created tiny orange sparks
(Thomas). Thomas ended with a different tense from which she began her essay. She said, We are
