• There are three kinds of card catalog – the title card, the author card and the subject card.
• The title card presents the title of each book on the first line of the card.
• The author card lists each book by the author’s last name.
• The subject card lists each book of non – fiction by the name of its subject.
• The call helps us find any book in the library. It is preset in all three card catalogs.

How do i find books, DVDs and journals
1.
2.
3. The library catalogue is the best way to locate resources in the library. You can search for items by title, author, keyword, media type (books, DVDs, journals, etc) and other options. The library catalogue can be accessed in the college or off-campus from the following addresses: http://lr-system.south-thames.internal/heritage/(college) http://library.south-thames.ac.uk/ (off-campus via Blackboard login)
4. If you are researching a topic or subject for your assignment use a keyword search to find resources. The library catalogue home screen allows you to enter a keyword search.
5. From the home screen you can click on the advanced link for options for more precise searching: You can choose to search in specific fields such as Author, Location, Site, Publisher, Language from the Search in pull-down menu. This can be combined with searching within specific media types such as book, DVD, journal from the Media type pull-down menu. Additional “search strings” can be added by clicking on the + sign; these are combined using the Boolean operators AND, OR & AND NOT (see our How To Search Effectively presentation for more information on Boolean operators).
6. Clicking on the guided search tab allows a quick way to search for titles, authors and different media types.
7. A keyword search will return a list of results generated from the words you use; these keywords are highlighted in red. Useful tip: make a note of any reoccurring class numbers in the Class column – this might be a good place to look for resources for your assignment (class numbers are covered at the end of this presentation). Click on the title of an item to find out more information. The next screen looks in more detail at this.
8. An individual item record comes in two parts: The top part provides general information on the item such as the author, the title, the publisher, when the item was published, the edition, and the class number. The bottom part provides information on how many copies are available in each library.
9.
10. Loan type - how long a copy can be borrowed for
11. Location – here copies are located at Merton, Tooting and at Wandsworth in the Social Sciences and Business Zones (these are on separate floors)
13. Due date - the date a copy on loan is due back
14.
15. The library uses a numbering system (Dewey Decimal Classification) to arrange its resources. On the library catalogue these numbers are called class numbers or shelfmarks. These shelfmarks are printed on the spines of all of our books, DVDs and other resources so that they can be arranged in number order on our shelves. To locate an item make a note of its shelfmark on the catalogue record and then look for it on the shelf.
16. This numbering system groups together resources according to their subject area. Arranging resources in this way allows readers to browse the shelves for related materials – if you locate a relevant book on the catalogue, the items next to it on the shelf, being of the same subject area, might be useful too. Further information on the Dewey Decimal Classification system can be found at OCLC and Wikipedia.
