Practical Tips for Powerful PresentationsChris Heinz
Increasingly, energy managers (or anyone with an idea) must present ideas to groups of people. Whether it’s proving return on investment for an upcoming purchase, sharing the results of an energy efficiency project, or enlisting coworkers to conserve energy, these ideas are important.
However, few energy managers are ever trained in preparing presentations and speaking to groups, so high stakes presentations receive low stakes preparations. The important ideas get fumbled.
But in this webinar, Chris Heinz, speaker and VP of Marketing for EnergyCAP, Inc., provides practical tips for delivering powerful presentations.
Borrowing from presentation experts Nancy Duarte and Dan Roam, Heinz will discuss how to:
- delight your audience
- say what you mean
- use storytelling
- make your slides shine
- deliver your presentation so people care
Say goodbye to mediocre presentations and deliver powerful presentations every time.

Yes, My tuatara loves to cha-cha: Improv, creativity and designUX New Zealand 2015
Speaker: Steve Portigal
Improv is not ‘stand-up comedy’ but a series of games that offer huge degrees of freedom within a set of constraints. During improv, we bring out quickly-understood-and-communicated rules of culture that are implicit, not explicit.
Design and improv have important similarities. Both practices involve collaboration and brainstorming; an emphasis on breakthrough thinking; in-the-moment aspects and ‘Aha!’ moments; a balance of process, structure, and unfettered creativity; an enormous unspoken interaction; and the need to learn upon reflection.
Playing with improv can help us to be more mindful of the power of listening, to create a more collaborative work culture, to develop our own creativity, and to warm up teammates and clients in workshops and design sessions.
In this interactive presentation, you’ll learn about improv, listening, and creativity, and how each supports the others. No tuatara's will be harmed.

Public communication involves individuals or groups engaging in dialogue to deliver a message to an audience. There are three main categories of public speaking: to inform, to persuade, and to entertain. Good public speaking skills are important for school, career advancement, and confidence. Some strategies for becoming a better speaker include planning appropriately, practicing, engaging the audience, paying attention to body language, thinking positively, and coping with nerves.

Developing courage and self confidence through preparationRana Usman Sattar
This document discusses techniques for developing public speaking skills and overcoming nervousness when speaking in front of others. It recommends choosing a topic you are knowledgeable about, thoroughly preparing by researching the topic and assembling your own thoughts and ideas on it rather than relying on memorized sentences, and gaining experience and confidence through practice speaking. Preparation involves deep thinking about the topic over time, having extra information and ideas beyond what can be included in the speech, and delivering the speech with confidence even if you still feel nervous initially.

Welcome to Week 6!
Congratulations! All of your hard work on your speech presentation has paid
off. You have chosen your topic, researched it, organized your notes into an
outline, worked on creating a PowerPoint presentation, and now you are
ready to present it to your audience. So why do you feel sick to your stomach
when you think about presenting it? Consider this:
Imagine this scenario: Linda, Simmone, Serge, and
Brian have worked with you to make a business
decision about a new company procedure. Now your
group needs to present its findings to the Board of
Directors.
Read this excerpt from the perspective of the
proverbial fly on the wall at your latest team meeting:
Linda: "I have given several presentations before,
and I am typically pretty confident, but usually I am
talking to customers or peers. This is the first time I
have had to give a presentation to any group like a
Board of Directors. I want to make a good impression,
and I know we have made a good decision. Still, to be
honest, I am worried about making a mistake or not

Simmone: "Oh, come on, Linda. The Board of
Directors is made up of people just like you and me.
Let's just go and get this done so we can move ...
This document outlines strategies for having difficult conversations effectively. It discusses how assumptions, fears, roles and personalities can make conversations difficult. It emphasizes active listening skills like maintaining eye contact and acknowledging feelings. Reframing issues and separating people from problems are presented as ways to facilitate understanding. Role playing difficult scenarios is suggested as practice to apply the strategies. The overall message is that difficult conversations require preparation and focus to have positive outcomes.
Communication is a vital key in this new century. It gives an edge to keep abreast with the fast pace of the times. Public speaking definitely works towards this goal. The diversity of opinions today, which are often controversial, has increased the need for public speaking.

Crisis results from high levels of stress that overwhelm a person's normal coping abilities. A crisis can occur when a situation is encountered that the person has little experience dealing with. This leaves them feeling powerless and unable to think rationally due to high anxiety levels. During a crisis, people naturally seek support from others but may feel abandoned if not supported, exacerbating their anxiety further. Without an ability to cope or see solutions, people can enter a state of "learned helplessness" focused only on short-term survival rather than resolving the crisis. Crisis intervention aims to provide support and direction to help victims cope when they cannot help themselves.
The document provides etiquette guidelines for introducing people in various situations:
1) When introducing peers, use first and last names and provide some background information about each person to help start a conversation.
2) When introducing someone of higher status to someone of lower status, introduce the higher status person first and provide information to help the lower status person.
3) When introducing a customer, put the customer first to show respect and provide information about both the customer and your own employee.
4) Traditional rules said to introduce men to women and older people to younger, but nowadays rank or position is more important.

This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.

Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
