There are two main mechanisms by which pathogens attack plants: mechanical forces and chemical weapons. Mechanically, some fungi penetrate plant tissues using structures like appresoria and infection pegs, applying turgor pressure. Nematodes use their stylets. Chemically, pathogens secrete enzymes, toxins, growth regulators, and polysaccharides. Enzymes like chitinases, pectinases, cellulases, and lignases are used to degrade plant cell walls and tissues. Growth regulators like auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinines induce abnormal plant growth. Polysaccharides cause mechanical blockages.
