Phytoalexins are toxin-like substances produced by plants in response to infection by parasites and physiological stresses. They help confer protection against infecting parasites. Hundreds of phytoalexins have been characterized, mostly in legume and nightshade plant families. Phytoalexins are activated only after infection and develop in response to contact between the host cell and pathogen. They are chemically diverse but many are products of the shikimic acid pathway. Phytoalexins act as fungistatic compounds rather than fungicidal compounds.
