Hospital Pharmacy

(Lecturer)
• Hospital pharmacy is the healthcare service which
comprises the art practice and profession of choosing
preparing storing compounding and dispensing
medicine and medical device advising healthcare
professionals and patients on their safe effective and
efficient and use.
• Hospital pharmacy is a specialized field of pharmacy
that is integrated into the care of a medical center
HOSPITAL PHARMACY
DEFINITION
Function of Hospital Pharmacy
To participate in the patient care system
by dispensing medicine.
It inspects the received items and
maintains an inventory for the same
It keeps a record of all the narcotic
drugs and opiods received and issued
 Packaging of medicine and labeling
the containers.
 It discuss about the drug related
information with the medical staff,
residents nurses, health care team and the
patients
It participate in minimizing the
incidence of illness, and improves the
general health of the population.
 The Pharmacist are the third largest group of healthcare professional in the
world , and along the growth of pharmacist the hospital pharmacy is also
growing steady
 The main job of the pharmacist is to manufacture and dispense the drug, but this
role is evolved now and the are playing an important role in the care of the
patients
 Many of countries are not accepting the pharmacist as healthcare team although
the are capable to work in this field
 In India a hospital pharmacist has a limited role in comparison to western
countries
 Many of countries granted the pharmacist to prescribe drugs for the patient
 Hospital pharmacy is a important part of hospital to provide pharmaceutical
preparation
 Developed countries have clearly defined the role of pharmacist, but many of
countries have not defined their role.

Organisational structure of Hospital
pharmacy
Organisational structure-
 To follow the hospital’s policies and covey other for that.
 To provide drug information and way of administration to new
staff or of new drugs to all staff
 To remain updated about new drug( effect, side effect etc)
 To give instruction to the patients for self administrated drugs
 To take part in new research and development
 To educate and makes trained the pharmacist and pharmacy
students are taking hospital training
Professional Responsibilities of a
hospital pharmacist
 The chief pharmacist must have minimum postgraduate degree in
pharmacy especially in pharmacology or hospital pharmacy
 Manufacturing chemist should have graduate degree in pharmacy
with minimum 18 month experience in drug manufacturing
 Dispensing pharmacist should have minimum diploma in pharmacy
 Phd degree holder is preferred in all categories
Qualification and experience
required for hospital pharmacy
1) Administrative and management ability:
a) A pharmacist should have the ability of planning, implementing the
pharmacies policies and ability of market budget, stock control
b) He/she should have ability to interview and select staff for pharmacist
c)He/she should have abilities to manage staff and distribute work between them
2) Manufacturing ability: He should be able to manufacture drug in case
shortage or high cost of drug then normal.
3) Knowledge: He/she must have complete knowledge about drug action ,side
effect , routes of administration and quality control
4) Research ability: he should have ability to research and develop a new drug
5) Teaching ability: he should have ability to give lecture to students under
training
Chief pharmacist must have this qualities
• A job specification is the list of recommended
Qualities for a person to quality a postion
A Pharmacist should have the quality and experience in
“dispensing drug”. Performing “quality check”, formulating
and reformulating dosage form monitoring and reporting
drug safety, creating medication budget, storing medication
and in planning of drug qualities for hospital
Work load means how much work can a person do in a specific
time
The work load of pharmacist is observed/analyzed by work
characteristic, some characteristic are following
1)Working hour per week
2)No of hrs that a person spent working alone in his or her
department
3)No of prescription filled by pharmacist daily
Work load requirement for hospital
pharmacist
• The no of pharmacist needed for hospital is
determined using no beds
• Up to 50 beds 3 pharmacist
• Up to 100 beds 5 pharmacist
• Up to 200 beds 8 pharmacist
• Up to 300 beds 10 pharmacist
• Up to 500 beds 15 pharmacist

  • 2. • Hospital pharmacy is the healthcare service which comprises the art practice and profession of choosing preparing storing compounding and dispensing medicine and medical device advising healthcare professionals and patients on their safe effective and efficient and use. • Hospital pharmacy is a specialized field of pharmacy that is integrated into the care of a medical center HOSPITAL PHARMACY DEFINITION

Function of Hospital Pharmacy To participate in the patient care system by dispensing medicine. It inspects the received items and maintains an inventory for the same It keeps a record of all the narcotic drugs and opiods received and issued  Packaging of medicine and labeling the containers.  It discuss about the drug related information with the medical staff, residents nurses, health care team and the patients It participate in minimizing the incidence of illness, and improves the general health of the population.
  • 4.  The Pharmacist are the third largest group of healthcare professional in the world , and along the growth of pharmacist the hospital pharmacy is also growing steady  The main job of the pharmacist is to manufacture and dispense the drug, but this role is evolved now and the are playing an important role in the care of the patients  Many of countries are not accepting the pharmacist as healthcare team although the are capable to work in this field  In India a hospital pharmacist has a limited role in comparison to western countries  Many of countries granted the pharmacist to prescribe drugs for the patient  Hospital pharmacy is a important part of hospital to provide pharmaceutical preparation  Developed countries have clearly defined the role of pharmacist, but many of countries have not defined their role.   • 7.  To follow the hospital’s policies and covey other for that.  To provide drug information and way of administration to new staff or of new drugs to all staff  To remain updated about new drug( effect, side effect etc)  To give instruction to the patients for self administrated drugs  To take part in new research and development  To educate and makes trained the pharmacist and pharmacy students are taking hospital training Professional Responsibilities of a hospital pharmacist
  • 8.  The chief pharmacist must have minimum postgraduate degree in pharmacy especially in pharmacology or hospital pharmacy  Manufacturing chemist should have graduate degree in pharmacy with minimum 18 month experience in drug manufacturing  Dispensing pharmacist should have minimum diploma in pharmacy  Phd degree holder is preferred in all categories Qualification and experience required for hospital pharmacy
  • 9. 1) Administrative and management ability: a) A pharmacist should have the ability of planning, implementing the pharmacies policies and ability of market budget, stock control b) He/she should have ability to interview and select staff for pharmacist c)He/she should have abilities to manage staff and distribute work between them 2) Manufacturing ability: He should be able to manufacture drug in case shortage or high cost of drug then normal. 3) Knowledge: He/she must have complete knowledge about drug action ,side effect , routes of administration and quality control 4) Research ability: he should have ability to research and develop a new drug 5) Teaching ability: he should have ability to give lecture to students under training Chief pharmacist must have this qualities
  • 10. • A job specification is the list of recommended Qualities for a person to quality a postion A Pharmacist should have the quality and experience in “dispensing drug”. Performing “quality check”, formulating and reformulating dosage form monitoring and reporting drug safety, creating medication budget, storing medication and in planning of drug qualities for hospital

Work load means how much work can a person do in a specific time The work load of pharmacist is observed/analyzed by work characteristic, some characteristic are following 1)Working hour per week 2)No of hrs that a person spent working alone in his or her department 3)No of prescription filled by pharmacist daily Work load requirement for hospital pharmacist
  • 12. • The no of pharmacist needed for hospital is determined using no beds • Up to 50 beds 3 pharmacist • Up to 100 beds 5 pharmacist • Up to 200 beds 8 pharmacist • Up to 300 beds 10 pharmacist • Up to 500 beds 15 pharmacist
