Orphan Drug Report
Orphan Drug Report
An orphan drug is a drug designed to treat a rare disease or condition. For a drug to qualify for
orphan status both the drug and disease or condition must meet certain criteria specified in the
Orphan Drug Act (ODA). This designation would qualify the sponsor of the drug for
developmental incentives which includes waiving of regulator fees, faster or simpler clinical trial
and approval process, tax credit or grants to offset research and development, and a period of
marketing exclusivity which means no competition for many years. it does not mean that the FDA

Don t Forget To Like, Share and Subscribe: A Critical Evaluation of the Contemporary Issues in
Social Media The recent explosion in computer mediated communication has led to a
phenomenal up surge in the availability and use of social networking sites. Dictionary.com
describes the term social networking as an online community of people with a common interest
who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information,
resources, etc. and, within the last 10/15 years, there have been significant developments in
technology making these online communities even easier to access. During the late 90 s and
early 2000s, there was limited interactivity on computers and internet speeds; this is what s
known as Web 1.0. In 1995, Clifford Stoll wrote an article for Newsweek titled The Internet?
Bah! Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn t, and will never be, nirvana . In his article, he went on to
describe what little faith he has in the internet lasting very long and that he thought it was just a
temporary craze . Little did he know that by the year 2012, some 2 billion people around the
world be using the internet and social media via computers, smartphones, tablet devices and
consoles as well as internet enabled televisions and e readers . With the vast developments in
mobile technology, faster internet speeds, GPS, tablet devices, ect, social media has never been
more accessible than it is today. Currently, the most popular social media website is

Eric Foner American Freedom Summary
Response to Eric Foner on American Freedom Foner emphasizes on the diverse interpretations of
freedom, and based on people s lived experiences within American society, it can represent different
things. Since it has no fixed definition within the article, Foner views freedom as a concept and
states by its very nature is the subject of disagreement (xiv). People s worldview can help shape
what freedom means to them and it may limit what freedom means to others. Although the
Declaration of Independence promotes all humans having unalienable rights given by the creator,
which are life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness, not all americans are able to enjoy those rights
in American society. As American societal norms constantly change (eventually),

This approach is a way to miss and dismiss the point of Blacks actually discussing the critical
state their community is in. The focus is not black lives over other s lives in the world, but is it
the focus of the neglect of black lives, when taken away, they are not viewed with disgust as
when their white counterparts die/are harassed in the same manner. It s weirdly interesting that
when Blacks are literally killed for following the law and are unarmed, they are blamed for their
own death, all because a cop feared for their life. Once officers say that phrase, which I view as a
clichГ© to say when one signs up for such a fearful job, cases are usually wrapped up and
forgotten about. However, thanks to social media, the public is able to see the hideous lies and
blatant truth about certain cases that highlight why the people have a problem with the
government and distrust the police. Oddly as all Americans are forced to pay taxes, these taxes
go to public necessities like schools, to fire stations and to the police station, even to wars. Sadly
I interpret it as the government focuses Blacks to pay police to kill their people off, and the
government seems to always instantly support the officer s word over the victim (if still alive), and
people. If people do not stand up against

Importance Of Cerebral Circulation
Cerebral Circulation
A constant flow of blood to the brain is vital to its proper functioning. Blood supplies the brain
with oxygen and to perform maximally the brain requires about 25% of the body s oxygen (Webb,
2016). Lack of oxygen for a prolonged period results in cell death causing irreversible damage to
the brain. Two paired arteries, four total, supply the vital source of blood to the brain and spinal
cord.
Arterial Structures
Blood supply to the brain is divided between the internal carotid arteries (ICA) and the vertebral
arteries. As stated in Cippola s text, the right and left ICA from the bifurcations of the common
carotid arteries and the ICA itself also split in the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. Its primary
function is to supply blood to the cerebrum. The vertebral arteries originate from the subclavian
artery and then join distally to form the basilar artery , (Cipolla, 2009). The basilar artery later
bifurcates into two posterior cerebral arteries , these arteries supply the inferolateral surface of
the temporal lobe and the lateral and medial surfaces of the occipital lobe, (Webb, 2016). While
the ICA mainly provides blood to the cerebrum, the vertebral arteries are the primary supply to
brain stem and cerebellum. The ICA and the vertebral arteries join together to form what is known
as the Circle of Willis.
Circle of Willis
The Circle of Willis is also known as the circulus arteriosus. It is a structure that is formed by the
joining of the two

Victorian Themes Of The Conventional Victorian Ideas In...
The conventional Victorian ideas are supported in Goblin Market . This is seen in the
representation of Laura and Lizzie. They have to be careful in how their actions might be
perceived, You should not peep at goblin men. / Lizzie covered up her eyes, / Covered close lest
they should look (Rossetti lines 49 51).A power struggle between men and women is established in
Goblin Market; all men are represented by the goblinmen, Laura and Lizzie signify all pure
innocent females. In the beginning the struggle is barely perceptible. The men tempt and tease the
girls to taste their fruit; however, the struggle becomes more obvious when Lizzie returns to the
goblins to purchase some fruit for Laura; the goblins try to force her to sit and eat the fruit with
them, but when she refuses the goblins cuss and hit her. The struggle is resolved by Lizzie. She
stands up to the goblin men and resists their temptations, initially they try to trap her and when that
does not work they try force. She triumphs by remaining strong.
Goblin Market is a moral fable of sin and redemption because the fruit represents sin. The goblins
use the fruit to tempt the young girls. Laura is persuaded to try it; however, she has no money
and is coerced to give a part of herself, You have much gold upon your head, / ... / Buy from us with
a golden curl. (123 125) Laura succumbs to desire and develops an obsession for the fruit, I ate

Donald Trump, and bragged about Hollywood s growing diversity.
Are we ready to make the Emmy s great again?, joked Kimmel at the end of his opening monologue.
The 68th Annual Emmy Awards on Sep. 18 marked the second time that the late night TV host

father. Along with Carlos, 21 innocent people were killed at the McDonald s located in San
Ysidro, California. Carlos is the youngest victim to gun violence till this date. His death is the
result of the killer having easy access to a semiautomatic pistol and a shotgun (Berkowitz et al,
2017). Ryan Frazier, the 21 year old husband of Emily Frazier, shot himself with a semiautomatic
gun he bought from a gas station in November 2008 after confronting his teenage nightmare for a
lawsuit. He was molested by a priest and his first time using a gun was to end his own life,
despite having a whole future ahead of him (Drexle, 2016). Carlos and Ryan are one of the many
few that lose their lives from guns. They represent the stories of victims who have died after the
trigger was pulled. With guns being readily available, everyone has the licenses to kill at any point
in time, whether the pain is inflicted on others or themselves. Imagine if these were stories of your

Tension, Humor, And Foreshadowing In The Martian By Andy Weir
Tension, humor, and foreshadowing are some examples of elements that readers will find in The
Martian. In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars. Because of a dust

Andy Weir is the author of the book, The Martian, a science fiction book that started out as an

These volumes reflect our understanding that historyis an act of interpretation. Essentially, this book
offers a multitude of benefits for those who wish to further study history, but at the same time the

Another pro to this book is its ability to save time and effort. The editors have condensed their
opinions and the opinions of the brightest historical minds into one book. Rather than search the
internet for an assortment of interpretations on a given historical event, the reader can flip to the
desired event in the text. Because of this, the student can rest assured that the content has been
properly evaluated, found relevant, and is, therefore, worth the time to read. Such a time saving
benefit must not be overlooked. Also, the variety of viewpoints presented in this book help to
expand the reader s knowledge. The editors provide a well rounded collection of additional
works that show the reader some of the major theories on a historical event. Basically, a reader is
able to see historical issues through the eyes of professional historians. Interpretations of American
History does not merely state the facts, it allows the reader to decide where they stand on the
historical event in question. This can lead to a deeper, more profound study of history. However,
the reader must keep in mind that this book is fact based opinion. The editors and consulted
historians are adding their thoughts to the known facts. Although such speculation can open the
door to broader thinking, it can also trip up those who take the opinion as fact. If misinterpreted,
this book might muddy the waters of the reader s mind. Still, the book in no way attempts to hide its

Lysistrata, By Euripides And Lysistrata Essay
Lysistrata was written in ancient Greece, a time where women s position in society was no greater
than a servant. In Lysistrata, Aristophanes depicts Greek women challenging male authority
through their own femininity in a comic and light hearted way. Wether or not Aristophanes was
trying to challenge male authority or was simply making a joke out of women is unclear, but it is
easy to note what ancient Greeks thought of women simply by how they depicted in Lysistrata.
Throughout the play the women are frequently presented in a stereotypical manner of inferiority
to the men. Even the female protagonist, Lysistrata, describes women as a submissive sexually
driven being. In the first scene, Lysistrata castigates the women for not showing interest and
commitment to her call to action. She says Women! Announce a debauch in honor of Bacchos
/...and traffic stops the streets are absolutely clogged/with frantic females...No urging for an
orgy! But today there s not one woman here! Lysistrata is portrayed to be less feminine and
mysogynistic, which leaves me to wonder wether that would have been the only acceptable way
to be able to have a successful play with a female lead character. Lysistrata s neighbor, Cleonice,
continuous to describe the women in a stereotypical fashion, Oh! they will come, my dear; but it s
not easy, you know, for women to leave the house. One is busy pottering about her husband; another
is getting the servant up; a third is putting her child asleep or

Analysis Of Microchip Implant And Its Impact On Securing...
Introduction to Microchip Implant Microchip implant is an exceptionally well thought
authentication method that has the possibility of making a huge impact in securing
information. The concept of microchip implant was introduced in 1945 by Leon Theremin, who
was the originator of one of the first covert devices which is also known as bugs . This device is
followed by Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology which is a small electronic device
that contains a chip. This chips allows the ability to store data typically ranging up to 2,000
bytes or less. RFID is comparable to magnetic strips or bar codes because they all act as a unique
identifier for a specific purpose. In order to obtain information from an RFID, you must scan the
device just as how a magnetic strip or bar code would require scanning. RFID can also be described
as the wireless non contact use of radio frequency electromagnetic fields that helps in transferring
data with the goal of being able to automatically recognize and monitor tags that are being attached
to objects. RFID technology is currently being used by many different industries varying from
identifications badges that enclose RFID tags that assist with eliminating the chances of shoplifting,
to vehicles using the technology to help monitor the production process and track the vehicles
across the assembly line. Other scenarios that may use the microchip implant includes animals
having RFID tags placed in them for identification purposes as

Our primary target markets are the younger generations across the U.S. as they tend to be more

services with the aim of promoting political unity. For example, doctoral students at MIT
developed a service called Connect where users enter information about themselves on a

who have been determined to be different from the user. The service was created to help people
broaden their horizons by talking to people who have some things in common, but also have
differences. However, this app is limited to Boston area institutions, so its user base is constrained
in its size and diversity. Because Burst provides a mobile connection rather than a physical one, it

The Border Of The United States
The Unlawful border crossing in the U.S. Southern border has been of political interest for the past
decades. It has been the primary source of the illegal trades into U.S. from Mexico. Despite the
government efforts to end the act, there have not been long term solutions to the Menace. The vital
approach is to understand the structural nature of the borderand the socio cultural nature of the
inhabitants that facilitates the illegal act across the border. The lawful bill in place seems not to
offer a practical solution to combating the problem. The existing border and immigration policies
should be revised to provide a possible settlement to the illegal trade across the borders. Also, the
border barriers should be adequately constructed and guarded with border security officials.
Another crucial area for consideration is the cooperation between the two countries in combating
the illegal trade across the border. A cross border initiative like Merida by President Bush would
have been the significant initiative in promoting the U.S. Mexicocross border collaboration in
combating the Illegal Border Crossings. Due to the well coordinated nature of these criminal
networks, full federal cooperation like Boarder Enforcement Security Taskforce (BEST) should act
in combating the organized gangs.

The Rise Of The Roman Empire Essay
Constantine was the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity. He started his reign in 307
AD. During this time the Roman Empire was still composed mainly of pagans. Although the
population of Christians was on the rise, in the beginning of the fourth century, Christians made up
only 10 percent of the population in the Roman Empire. There were approximately five million
Christians in the Roman Empire meaning that they were still the minority (Waldron). His
conversion was an important turning point not only for Christians but also for the Roman
Empire as a whole. Although most Romans still believed in Greco Roman religions, Constantine
decided to become a Christian because he knew that it would be beneficial for his role as
emperor. His conversion was prompted by his desire to end the tetrarchy structure of the Roman
Empire and to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. The story of Constantine s conversion
was told through Eusebius of Caersera. His recount of the story is skewed by his bias. In order to
show a more holistic view of the story I will be comparing his account to the account of another
historian named Andreas AlfoМ€ldi. The comparison will show that Constantine had other motives
for converting to Christianity. Constantine s decision to become a Christian was influenced by
numerous external factors. He emulated the monotheistic nature of Christianity and used it as the
foundation of his reign and used Christianity to advance his political agenda. When

modification may be seen negatively as social networking sites, particularly Facebook, has
corroded the real essence of a community. What makes Facebook corrosive to a real community?
Fake Confidence People usually have joined Facebook due to their friends invitation, peer
pressure or simply out of curiosity. In regards with how users behave on the social networking
site, there are some instances when they tend to get some form of satisfaction when someone
Like whatever they posted on their accounts. In one study, it was even insinuated that the use of
Facebook may boost self esteem only to be a victim of unable to control emotions later on
(Huffington, 2013). A Facebook user who has recently seen some rise in confidence may tend to
crave more attention by posting everything about him or herself. This uncontrollable activity may
lead to an experience of a superficial confidence online which may not translate in the real world.
Since Facebook users only view the number of likes from what they have posted, they are not really

Working At The Country Club
During my sophomore year of high school, one of my teachers approached me and asked if I
was interested in a job for the summer at the country of a local country club. While I was
nervous at first, I accepted the job, and have now completed two successful summers there. The
experience of having a summer job taught me many things; and as I continued to take on more
and more responsibilities over the summer, I learned even more about how to be responsible at all
times and to empathize with someone in order to understand their perspective and to help improve
their experience. One of the many responsibilities of my job was to help prepare billing statements
for the members of the country club. This taught me to be responsible at all times, as even the
slightest mistake could result in a member being overcharged or undercharged which could lead to
a number of other problems for both the member and the club.... Show more content on

If a member was having a problem of any kind, I had to be able to place myself in his or her

the way you conduct yourself in all settings leaves an impression upon people, which was a
valuable lesson in developing my character. In conclusion, working at the country club taught me a
number of things which will come in handy as I continue maturing into adulthood. Being a

Personal Narrative-High School
I live in a suburban town whose families are well off, each home has hedges trimmed to the needle
and the downtown streets are lined with colorful flags and flowerbeds in the springtime. It is a
moderate sized town but a quiet and simple place to live. Not a lot happens; it is quaintly bustling
during the daytime, yet at night not even a car can be spotted parked on main street. The town
appears to be an ideal, utopian establishment an embodiment of civilization. However, the only high
school is bursting at the seams, the students are rowdy, and there is a surplus of rules but apathetic
punishment. Troubled kids would wait through a tolerable one hour detention, then go out and
reinstate their poor behavior. This evokes many questions about... Show more content on

I spend the a lot of my time doing extracurriculars, like playing baseball, piano, and skiing. When
I do read a book, it entails utter silence or I ll be lost in foggy thought. My hometown has a main
library, along with miniature counterparts in each grade school. When I was younger, I would
ride my bike there with my sister and check out books that may have interested me. I looked for
books with deeper meaning; themes that I can relate to but delivered in a way that will intrigue
me from bookend to bookend. The irony behind this was that I was chasing, searching for a great
book, where a great book found me. It was spanked on my desk by my tenth grade English
teacher Mrs. Walke. It was about the truth behind boys. It is titled Lord of the Flies. Unlike the
boys in this book, who get to run unrestricted, there was no need for running, searching, and
exploring in my town, because everything needed to know has already been discovered. It is the
digital age, where a device the size of a cassette can replace a pocketwatch, library, boombox, and

What Is Classical And Operant Conditioning
Introduction:
Classical conditioning and operant conditioning are different learning methods.
The two methods have the word conditioning in common. Conditioning is the acquisition of
specific patterns of behavior in the presence of well defined stimuli. Both classical and operant
conditioning are basic forms of learning. Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which an
organism learns to transfer a natural response from one stimulus to another, previously neutral
stimulus. Manipulating reflexes does this. Operant conditioning is a type of learning in which the
likelihood of a behavior is increased or decreased by the use of reinforcement or punishment.
Operant conditioning deals with more cognitive thought process. These two forms of learning have

Classical conditioning:
Secondly, many people used to say that classical conditioning in the classroom are less
important than those of operant conditioning. But still there is a need for teachers to try to make
sure that students associate positive emotional experiences with learning. If a student associates
negative emotional experiences with school then this can obviously have bad results, such as
creating a school phobia. For example, if a student is bullied at school they may learn to
associate school with fear. It could also explain why some students show a particular dislike of
certain subjects that continue throughout their academic career. This could happen if a student
is humiliated or punished in class by a teachers. Moreover classical conditioning is a temporary
learning process where a bell is rang and then the dog is given food and this process is repeated
several times. After a while, the dog learns to assume that a ringing bell means food is coming and
so the dog begins salivating to simply the sound of the bell expecting food. So it means

Intergenerational Effects of Residential Schools Who are the people that went to residential
schools, where are they, and their families today? Have you ever heard someone talk about
residential schools like it was an everyday conversation? Residential schools have become so
camouflaged into the back of people s minds. People tend to forget that these schools took place
and that they are real life events that can have an effect on everyone around them. These schools
have left such an imprint on Canada as a whole, that people should be more aware about the
outcomes and more familiar with the history of these schools. The intergenerational effects of

enterocyte effacement (LEE) region in their genomes. This region encodes a type III secretion

a.What are two mechanisms by which these organisms have acquired this region (2pts)? Which
seems most likely (3pts)?
One mechanism by which E. coli. and C. rodentium could have acquired the locus enterocyte
effacement region (LEE) in their genomes is via mutation. Because the T3SS is related to
bacterial flagellum, it could be possible that the LEE sequence originally coded for flagellar
components before some sort of mutation caused it to begin coding for a T3SS instead. Because
the T3SS would increase the fitness of the bacterium, bacteria

Percy Bysshe Shelley Essay
On of the most influential romantic English poets of the 19th century was Percy Bysshe
Shelley. He was born August 4th 1792 to Sir Timothy and Elizabeth Pilford Shelley in Field
Place, Horsham, Sussex, England. (Crook) Shelley was the oldest of six children. He had one
brother, John and four sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, Hellen, and Margaret. His family lived a very
comfortable lifestyle, especially his dad s father, Bysshe Shelley whom owned quite a few
estates. Shelley s father was also a member of parliament. The young Shelley was educated at
Syon House academy from 1802 to 1804 and then attended Eton College from 1804 to 1810, where
he resisted physical and mental bullying by indulging in imaginative escapism and literary pranks.

more estranged. Due to the ever growing distance between Shelley and his family, he and his
new bride struggled financially, until his grandfather Bysshe Shelley s passed away. Due to the
provisions in his will, Sir Timothy was forced to pay Shelley s debts and grant him an annual

2.11 Single Entry Bookkeeping
Alternatively, organisations not using double entry bookkeeping will use single entry bookkeeping.
Single entry differs from double entry by not following the dual aspect rule, with Hanif
(2013)stating transactions are not recorded in their two fold aspects . There are limitations of single
entry bookkeeping in comparison to double entry bookkeeping. Hanif (2013) Fleay et al (2011)
Ahmed (2008) Mukherjee and Hanif (2006)postulate that due to single entry bookkeeping not
acknowledging nominal accounts, this results in the trading and profit and loss account cannot be
prepared . Additionally, single entry bookkeeping does not have set rules that double entry
bookkeeping has, resulting in potential confusion. Additionally, employers integrating double entry
bookkeeping into their business in comparison to single entry are able to make better decisions,
signifying the critical importance of double entry bookkeeping, in regards to benefiting employers,
guiding them to make better, informed decisions.
2.2 Trial Balance
Kimuda (2008)defines trial balance as a schedule of balance, both credit and debit, extracted from

Meaning Of Adoption

have entered into the arena as well. These mobile devices are having a significant impact on our
lives and are in fact redefining the way we access information and communicate with others. This is
due to not only the hardware but the specialized software that these devices run and most
importantly, their operating systems. In what follows, we will take an informative tour of modern
mobile operating systems, their different types and usage across smartphone and tablet platforms.

The introduction of the iPad in 2010 only added to the popularity of iOS. Much like the case of
smartphones, tablets had been widely available for over a decade but it was again Apple that
built upon the success of iPhone to bring them to the masses in form of the iPad, creating a
modern tablet boom and leading to other competitors joining the market. With the iPad and the
iPad 2, Apple still leads the tablet market share by a huge margin. Due to its restricted nature,
iOS limited users to only the features Apple decided appropriate. That s when the development
community decided to intervene and came up with Jailbreaking. This allowed power users to
install additional apps not available in the official App Store and customize their iPhones beyond
the standard features provided by Apple. By now, iOS has improved a lot and as of the current
version 4.3.3, it supports multi tasking, audio and video playback to AirPlay devices, data
tethering and several other enhancements, in addition to the above mentioned features.
Jailbreaking continues to play an important role in iOS devices and enables users to take their
iPhones beyond the often ridiculous limitations set by Apple. RIM BlackBerry OS This is the
operating system used in all BlackBerry devices. Despite having been popular in corporate sector,
BlackBerry devices are losing market share to Android and iPhone.

Introduction:
In this Truth and Reconciliation Report a variety of topics will be discussed. First, I will explain
what the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is, who makes up the commission, and
how they were picked. Then, I will explain the purpose of the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission, why the commission was created, and what are they responding to. In addition, I
will provide two critiques of the TRC report, identify how social work can respond to the TRC
report, and identify how I might respond to the TRC report in my personal/professional life. Lastly,
I will provide a conclusion summarizing what was spoken about in this Truth and Reconciliation

Personal Statement On Personal Finance
Knowledge about personal finance is not always common knowledge and although money
touches most modern homes, most parents don t teach their kids about money either. It can be
hard to find time in a busy schedule to figure out when and how to adjust your time to set up a
proper budget so instead you just decide to live pay check to paycheck because it got your
parents by and now it gets you by and that has just always worked. One day you have to grow up
and realize that those consequences of being financially stupid will come back to haunt you.
Introduction
The biggest issue that individuals have with their personal income is the lack of understanding
where and how to control their spending habits and sometimes when to pay bills. This causes a
great deal of anxiety, stress, depression, unkempt hygiene and possibly even losing the very job
that is keeping their income flowing in to start with. With couples, the number one cause of
relationship issues that are brought in front of a therapist and the number one cause of divorce
just so happens to be financially related. The hardest yet most important thing to do when it
comes to your finances, it to stop getting overwhelmed and take control back of your money and
your life. Most people don t know where to start when it comes to taking control of their finances.
When I think of the short term aspect of personal finances, I think of the here the now and the
coming few months, maybe even up to a year. If you are

Tension in Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho Essay
Tension in Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho
When Psycho was first released in cinemas in 1960, audiences all over the world were shocked.
They were shocked that something as sexually explicit, for that era, was being screened in
hundreds of cinemas. Although audiences of the modern day are used to violence and sex scenes,
the audiences of the 60 s reacted in different ways. Some people viewed Psycho as a cinematic
brilliance but other critics gave the film many bad initial reviews. This is because Hitchcock was
extremely secretive in the making and publicity. He did not allow critics to see the film at special
screenings. Instead they had to see the film with the ordinary filmgoers after the release. ... Show

This boldly suggests that she has turned the corner from being a good girl to a bad girl.
The use of mirrors signifies the chaos/evil theme, which Hitchcock favors. The scene where
Marian holds up the money beside the mirror in the Bates motel s toilets, shows Hitchcock s idea
of the innerself and private self being shown in the reflection of the mirror. We are shown that
Marian is uncertain of the situation. However when we see a reflection of Norman Bates in a
window, it implies that although he has a nice outer persona, he must have a darker innerself.
Hitchcock uses weather to a great advantage. It is a great atmosphere maker as whenever we see
the Bates House, it is always in shadow, whether it s raining or sunny. The weather makes it
gloomy and sinister. At Marian s arrival at the motel, the rain blinds her way so she has no choice
but to stop at that particular motel. Perhaps if it hadn t been raining she wouldn t have stopped and
thus not met her dreadful demise.
The house is always shot in cloud or gloom like a haunted house. The use of lights in the house
adds atmosphere because from the outside it gives the impression of waiting and watchful eyes.
Bates house is always shot from a low angle, this makes the steps up to the house seem never
ending. This maintains tension as we don t know when

Presidents Of The Great Presidents
Historian Arthur Schlesinger said the team Imperial Presidency is when a president uses more
power than the Constitution allows, and were able to avoid the checks and balances of our
constitutional system. In this paper, I am going to explore three presidents who many feel were
imperial presidents. While doing the research I was surprised how many great presidents had
people make a case that they were an imperial president. For example, I read many articles about
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln running imperial presidency. Abraham Lincoln is widely
considered one of our greatest presidents. The three presidents that I am going to focus my paper
on are Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and George W. Bush. Lyndon Johnson took over as
President when John F. Kennedy was assassinated on a hot Dallas day. Many feel that the
government acted quickly after JFK was pronounced dead to move on actions that JFK was not
going to do in his presidency. Johnson sent over 22,000 troops to the Dominican Republic in 1965
without the approval of congress (Schlesinge, 1973). Johnson also sent combat troops in Vietnam.
People still have a bad taste in their mouth over the debacle in Vietnam. Vietnam ranks 4th among
all wars in troop casualties and was a war that lead people to flee the country because they did not
want to fight and did not believe the war was just. Congress required 48 hours notice when a
president wants to send troops to another country and Lyndon Johnson did

Punishment For Corporal Punishment
Two different families live in the same neighborhood; in the home are both parents and one child,
the children are both boys. One family spanks their child when he miss behaves; the other family
does not spank their child when he miss behaves they simply tell him it s not okay to act that way.
The family who supported corporal punishmentspanked their child daily, they did it to re enforce
to the child that the parents were the boss and that he needed to listen to them; and that when he
acted out in a bad manner then he would be punished for his behavior. Eventually that child
learned what he could and couldn t not do, he learned that his parents were the boss and he
needed to follow their rules that they set, as well as learning right from wrong. That child grew up
showing everyone respect, and he knew that in real life if he got in trouble and didn t follow the
rules that there would be consequences to his actions. The other family raised their child without
spankinghim; yes the child knew what was right and what was wrong but he didn t care because
there was no discipline or consequences for his actions. The family constantly argued and yelled at
each other and it was not a peaceful home. When that child grew up he didn t care for the
consequences of his actions and constantly acted out in society. Not every situation are like these
two but many are, the punishment of the child is up to the parent. Parents can gain a lot from
spanking their child; and their child can learn a lot like discipline, respect, and taking
responsibilities of their actions, and excepting the consequences.
I believe in corporal punishment to an extent. Yes, I think spanking your child is effective and
most kids respond to it very well. In order for spanking to be effective the parent needs to be
discipline about it on themselves; for example, the parent cannot sit and tell their child that they
will be getting spanked when they get home and then not follow through with their word because
then that child will come to realize they can get away with anything. On the other hand, the parent
cannot get carried away with spanking their child excessively; if the parent spanks their child to
much then the child can become resentful and

Why The Allies Won The Battle Of Normandy
Hitler and the Allies realized that a battle on the western coast of Europe would decide the outcome
of the war. The Allies utilized this knowledge and began immediately planning Operation Overlord.
Little did they know, the battle of Normandy would be the most significant Allied offensive battle
on the Western front(Walker). In total, the operation would take the combined effort of 176,475
men, 3,000 guns, 1,500 tanks, and 15,000 other assorted vehicles (Walker). People recognize the
glorious outcome of that fateful day, June 6,1944, but they don t know that it took months of

At first Operation Overlord was suppose to occur in May (Stagg 12),yet due to weather
forecasts the plan was pushed back to June. Another problem was that every branch of the
military wanted quiet weather . This entailed low tides so that the underwater obstacles could be
seen, the low tide needed to be around mid morning so that they could bomb the defenses and so
that a second low tide could roll in before darkness set in(Miller 171). The Air troops wanted no
ground fog or heavy mist, no more than 6/10th of the sky be clouded, and a cloud base at least
3,000 feet above ground level. To ensure that the troops were not too widely spread to the wind
speed would need to be 20 mph. With no gusts at the ground more than 30 mph(Stagg 13). The
demands of the Air troopers were reasonable especially since they were going to be the first ones
to land in the middle of the night and start the offensive. But, because of the weather many of the
paratroopers missed their target and were separated from their group. The infamous 101st
airborne was the only group that was able to stay together and suffer the least amount of
casualties( in the book Band of Brothers one soldier not in their platoon asks Where the hell am
I (Ambrose 75). Indicates the unorganized drops). After weekly updates( Eisenhower requested
that the meteorologists give him detailed updates of the weather since January 1944) the
operation was planned to go off on June 4, 1944. However, the sky began to seem ominous, and
the meteorologist had to warn Eisenhower that a cold front that was expected to pass through
Channel about Wednesday, would now be pushed forward earlier 24 or 36 hours earlier ( Stagg

From the beginning the revelation of God was an accumulation of people s/man s expectations
of what and who they wanted God to be. By some, God was expected to work by redirecting the
stream of earthly events, mis lug up as a Messiah a second David who should restore the lost
glories of Israel s golden age. By others the coming of the Messiah was looked for as the
appearance of a supernatural celestial being who should not redirect, but put an end, to history; and
some held that this would be done by the direct action of GodHimself, acting as his own Messiah (
Streitferdt para.1). I agree with the idea that God, who was manifested into a fleshly being, Jesus,
did pre exist before his birth at Bethlehem. In Psalm 110 David says this, The Lord said unto my
Lord, sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool (KJV Bible). Here David
had a revelation about the Mesiah. The Lord (present), indicating to David that there would be a
Mesiah (future).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In John 10:30 Jesus thus identifies Himself with God, and confirms His earthly statement I and
My Father are One (KJV Bible) . (Streidtfert para. 33). In the upper room experience Jesus
identifies his being before the world was formed, proving that he is an eternal Christ. Jesus as a
man was subject to the same things that we as humans are subject to. There are various
examples in the Bible where Jesus is faced with the same temptations that any human being
would face. The fact that Jesus was able to be, do and feel the same as any human being is proof
of his physical form and emotional genetic make up. The major and most simplistic proof of
Jesus as a human was his death. In the Bible you can also learn of the age of Christ. When Jesus
was lost and Mary and Joseph were searching for him you would realize that when they found
Jesus, they found a 12 year old boy. Age is another way to prove

The Steel Industry in the USA
The Steel Industry in the USA Steel has been part of the greatest achievements in history. It was the
iron horse and steelrails that helped carve a nation out of the frontier. Steel is the backbone of
bridges, the skeleton of skyscrapers and the framework of automobiles. Now in the 21st century, it
is still revolutionizing the way we live. It is high strength frames for eyeglasses; it is a strong
durable frame in housing and it s precise surgical instruments used in hospital operating rooms
around the world.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the workers, modernization has meant learning new skills to operate sophisticated equipment.
Competition also has resulted in increasing specialization of steel production as various producers
attempt to capture different niches in the market. As international and domestic competition
continue for U. S steel producers, the nature of the industry and the jobs of its workers are expected
to continue to change.
Domestic steel prices declined significantly during 1998 and 1999, allegedly because of dumping
of subsidized, low priced steel products onto the U.S market by foreign producers. The steel
industry appealed to the Government for vigorous enforcement of trade laws in response to the
alleged dumping and received support from the U.S. Department of Commerce in the form of
antidumping duty margins against several countries. Later, the International TradeCommission
ruled against the industry claiming that the industry did not suffer irreparable damage from the
extra imports. (4)
The U. S Antidumping Act of September 8, 1916 allows civil actions and criminal proceedings to
be brought against importers who commonly and systematically have imported or sold foreign
produced goods in the United States at prices which are substantially less than the prices at which
the same products are sold in a relevant foreign market, provided that such action is

The Inferno, By Dante
Throughout the Inferno, Dante has often presented characters in a way that reflects his own
personality: there is the amorous and suicidal Dido for whom he shows sympathy and gives a
lesser punishment, while there is the suicidal Pier delle Vigne to whom he gives a much harsher
punishment. This difference in placement should reflect a strict moral code that agrees with a pre
established divine order, and yet Dante demonstrates such obvious favoritism. Why? Dido loved
Aeneas too much, as Dante loved Beatrice. Therefore, Dante can easily sympathize. Similarly, when
Dante faces Francesca da Rimini and her lover Paolo, he experiences an immense amount of
understanding and compassion yet they are there in Hell. While these characters may come... Show

In the Commedia, Dante depicts himself as a prophet (for which God s word is the Commedia
itself) who undergoes a learning experience that transforms him into a perfect prophet who is able
to convey God s word without doubts or reservations. This transformation occurs gradually as Dante
learns from various characters he meets throughout the journey, but probably the greatest
contributor to this transformation is Ulysses. In Canto XXVI, Dante focuses on major themes
regarding his spiritual condition in order to contrast Ulysses spiritual condition, some of which
include the cause for damnation or salvation, a poetic and/or prophetic authority, and flight. The
primary source of similarities between their spiritual states can be found in Dante s Convivio,
which employs a much more philosophic and empirical perspective that ultimately led Dante into
the selva scura as seen in the beginning of the Commedia. The Commedia itself is meant to turn
those similarities into differences and thereby convince the reader of his transformation from
Convivio to the Commedia. In Canto XXVI, as Dante the pilgrim converses with Ulysses through
Virgil while assuming that Virgil understands that which Dante wishes to ask it is important to note
Dante s enthusiasm for coming to understand the history and sins of each character he meets:
S ei posson dentro da quelle faville parlar, diss io, maestro, assai ten priego e ripriego, che

The Book Thief Setting Analysis
We are all a product of our environment. Think about this: how would your life be different if
you grew up in a completely different place? How would farm life differ from living in a
metropolitan area? Well, the setting of a story has precisely the same effect on its development.
In Markus Zusak s The Book Thief, a girl named Liesel Meminger grows up in WWII Germany
and as a result of her parents being communists is put under foster care where she learns to read in
a place where they burn literature and everything from food to what people sell in stores are under
strict regulation. The setting of the story time, place, circumstance all allow the story s characters,
theme and plot to develop.
The setting dictates the characters and their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One theme of this novel is the power of literature and words. In fact, Zusak directly states the
theme on the 126th page of his novel: Once, words had rendered Liesel useless, but now, when
she sat on the floor, with the mayor s wife at her husband s desk, she felt an innate sense of
power. It happened every time she deciphered a new word or pieced together a sentence. He goes
on to explain that in a place such as Nazi Germany, how fitting it was that she was just now
learning the power behind the words. The real irony lies here: in Nazi Germany, a girl in the Hitler
youth learns to read as they have ceremonies for the purpose of burning books written by Jewish
authors, and her primary practice in the summer of 1940 came from reading Jewish books in her
mayor s library under the supervision of his wife. Now, if the setting were different, then this theme
wouldn t have the significance that it currently has. Thus, the setting magnifies the true theme.
In summation, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is greatly dependent on its setting. The setting
dictates the habits and stories for the characters, such as Liesel s love of literature or Max s hard
lot in life. The events in the plot are possible because of the circumstances in the setting, and the
themes take on a new dimension and meaning. Overall, the setting is the true root of the aspects
found in a story. It makes one wonder how the settings of our own lives have formed

Don t Forget To Like, Share and Subscribe: A Critical Evaluation of the Contemporary Issues in Social Media The recent explosion in computer mediated communication has led to a phenomenal up surge in the availability and use of social networking sites. Dictionary.com describes the term social networking as an online community of people with a common interest who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information, resources, etc. and, within the last 10/15 years, there have been significant developments in technology making these online communities even easier to access. During the late 90 s and early 2000s, there was limited interactivity on computers and internet speeds; this is what s known as Web 1.0. In 1995, Clifford Stoll wrote an article for Newsweek titled The Internet? Bah! Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn t, and will never be, nirvana . In his article, he went on to describe what little faith he has in the internet lasting very long and that he thought it was just a temporary craze . Little did he know that by the year 2012, some 2 billion people around the world be using the internet and social media via computers, smartphones, tablet devices and consoles as well as internet enabled televisions and e readers . Eric Foner American Freedom Summary Response to Eric Foner on American Freedom Foner emphasizes on the diverse interpretations of freedom, and based on people s lived experiences within American society, it can represent different things. Since it has no fixed definition within the article, Foner views freedom as a concept and states by its very nature is the subject of disagreement (xiv). People s worldview can help shape what freedom means to them and it may limit what freedom means to others. This approach is a way to miss and dismiss the point of Blacks actually discussing the critical state their community is in. The focus is not black lives over other s lives in the world, but is it the focus of the neglect of black lives, when taken away, they are not viewed with disgust as when their white counterparts die/are harassed in the same manner. It s weirdly interesting that when Blacks are literally killed for following the law and are unarmed, they are blamed for their own death, all because a cop feared for their life. Once officers say that phrase, which I view as a clichГ© to say when one signs up for such a fearful job, cases are usually wrapped up and forgotten about. However, thanks to social media, the public is able to see the hideous lies and blatant truth about certain cases that highlight why the people have a problem with the government and distrust the police. Oddly as all Americans are forced to pay taxes, these taxes go to public necessities like schools, to fire stations and to the police station, even to wars. Sadly I interpret it as the government focuses Blacks to pay police to kill their people off, and the government seems to always instantly support the officer s word over the victim (if still alive), and people. • 5. Importance Of Cerebral Circulation Cerebral Circulation A constant flow of blood to the brain is vital to its proper functioning. Blood supplies the brain with oxygen and to perform maximally the brain requires about 25% of the body s oxygen (Webb, 2016). Lack of oxygen for a prolonged period results in cell death causing irreversible damage to the brain. Two paired arteries, four total, supply the vital source of blood to the brain and spinal cord. Arterial Structures Blood supply to the brain is divided between the internal carotid arteries (ICA) and the vertebral arteries. As stated in Cippola s text, the right and left ICA from the bifurcations of the common carotid arteries and the ICA itself also split in the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. Its primary function is to supply blood to the cerebrum. The vertebral arteries originate from the subclavian artery and then join distally to form the basilar artery , (Cipolla, 2009). The basilar artery later bifurcates into two posterior cerebral arteries , these arteries supply the inferolateral surface of the temporal lobe and the lateral and medial surfaces of the occipital lobe, (Webb, 2016). While the ICA mainly provides blood to the cerebrum, the vertebral arteries are the primary supply to brain stem and cerebellum. The ICA and the vertebral arteries join together to form what is known as the Circle of Willis. Circle of Willis The Circle of Willis is also known as the circulus arteriosus. Because of this, the student can rest assured that the content has been properly evaluated, found relevant, and is, therefore, worth the time to read. • 15. Lysistrata, By Euripides And Lysistrata Essay Lysistrata was written in ancient Greece, a time where women s position in society was no greater than a servant. In Lysistrata, Aristophanes depicts Greek women challenging male authority through their own femininity in a comic and light hearted way. Wether or not Aristophanes was trying to challenge male authority or was simply making a joke out of women is unclear, but it is easy to note what ancient Greeks thought of women simply by how they depicted in Lysistrata. Throughout the play the women are frequently presented in a stereotypical manner of inferiority to the men. Even the female protagonist, Lysistrata, describes women as a submissive sexually driven being. In the first scene, Lysistrata castigates the women for not showing interest and commitment to her call to action. She says Women! Announce a debauch in honor of Bacchos /...and traffic stops the streets are absolutely clogged/with frantic females...No urging for an orgy! But today there s not one woman here! Lysistrata is portrayed to be less feminine and mysogynistic, which leaves me to wonder wether that would have been the only acceptable way to be able to have a successful play with a female lead character. Introduction to Microchip Implant Microchip implant is an exceptionally well thought authentication method that has the possibility of making a huge impact in securing information. The concept of microchip implant was introduced in 1945 by Leon Theremin, who was the originator of one of the first covert devices which is also known as bugs . This device is followed by Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology which is a small electronic device that contains a chip. This chips allows the ability to store data typically ranging up to 2,000 bytes or less. RFID is comparable to magnetic strips or bar codes because they all act as a unique identifier for a specific purpose. In order to obtain information from an RFID, you must scan the device just as how a magnetic strip or bar code would require scanning. RFID can also be described as the wireless non contact use of radio frequency electromagnetic fields that helps in transferring data with the goal of being able to automatically recognize and monitor tags that are being attached to objects. RFID technology is currently being used by many different industries varying from identifications badges that enclose RFID tags that assist with eliminating the chances of shoplifting, to vehicles using the technology to help monitor the production process and track the vehicles across the assembly line. It has been the primary source of the illegal trades into U.S. from Mexico. Despite the government efforts to end the act, there have not been long term solutions to the Menace. The vital approach is to understand the structural nature of the borderand the socio cultural nature of the inhabitants that facilitates the illegal act across the border. The lawful bill in place seems not to offer a practical solution to combating the problem. The existing border and immigration policies should be revised to provide a possible settlement to the illegal trade across the borders. Also, the border barriers should be adequately constructed and guarded with border security officials. Another crucial area for consideration is the cooperation between the two countries in combating the illegal trade across the border. A cross border initiative like Merida by President Bush would have been the significant initiative in promoting the U.S. Mexicocross border collaboration in combating the Illegal Border Crossings. • 22. The Rise Of The Roman Empire Essay Constantine was the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity. He started his reign in 307 AD. During this time the Roman Empire was still composed mainly of pagans. Although the population of Christians was on the rise, in the beginning of the fourth century, Christians made up only 10 percent of the population in the Roman Empire. There were approximately five million Christians in the Roman Empire meaning that they were still the minority (Waldron). His conversion was an important turning point not only for Christians but also for the Roman Empire as a whole. Although most Romans still believed in Greco Roman religions, Constantine decided to become a Christian because he knew that it would be beneficial for his role as emperor. His conversion was prompted by his desire to end the tetrarchy structure of the Roman Empire and to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. The story of Constantine s conversion was told through Eusebius of Caersera. His recount of the story is skewed by his bias. In order to show a more holistic view of the story I will be comparing his account to the account of another historian named Andreas AlfoМ€ldi. While I was nervous at first, I accepted the job, and have now completed two successful summers there. The experience of having a summer job taught me many things; and as I continued to take on more and more responsibilities over the summer, I learned even more about how to be responsible at all times and to empathize with someone in order to understand their perspective and to help improve their experience. One of the many responsibilities of my job was to help prepare billing statements for the members of the country club. This taught me to be responsible at all times, as even the slightest mistake could result in a member being overcharged or undercharged which could lead to a number of other problems for both the member and the club.... Personal Narrative-High School I live in a suburban town whose families are well off, each home has hedges trimmed to the needle and the downtown streets are lined with colorful flags and flowerbeds in the springtime. It is a moderate sized town but a quiet and simple place to live. Not a lot happens; it is quaintly bustling during the daytime, yet at night not even a car can be spotted parked on main street. The town appears to be an ideal, utopian establishment an embodiment of civilization. However, the only high school is bursting at the seams, the students are rowdy, and there is a surplus of rules but apathetic punishment. Conditioning is the acquisition of specific patterns of behavior in the presence of well defined stimuli. Both classical and operant conditioning are basic forms of learning. Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which an organism learns to transfer a natural response from one stimulus to another, previously neutral stimulus. Manipulating reflexes does this. Operant conditioning is a type of learning in which the likelihood of a behavior is increased or decreased by the use of reinforcement or punishment. Operant conditioning deals with more cognitive thought process. These two forms of learning have ... If a student associates negative emotional experiences with school then this can obviously have bad results, such as creating a school phobia. For example, if a student is bullied at school they may learn to associate school with fear. It could also explain why some students show a particular dislike of certain subjects that continue throughout their academic career. This could happen if a student is humiliated or punished in class by a teachers. Moreover classical conditioning is a temporary learning process where a bell is rang and then the dog is given food and this process is repeated several times. With the iPad and the iPad 2, Apple still leads the tablet market share by a huge margin. Due to its restricted nature, iOS limited users to only the features Apple decided appropriate. That s when the development community decided to intervene and came up with Jailbreaking. One family spanks their child when he miss behaves; the other family does not spank their child when he miss behaves they simply tell him it s not okay to act that way. The family who supported corporal punishmentspanked their child daily, they did it to re enforce to the child that the parents were the boss and that he needed to listen to them; and that when he acted out in a bad manner then he would be punished for his behavior. Eventually that child learned what he could and couldn t not do, he learned that his parents were the boss and he needed to follow their rules that they set, as well as learning right from wrong. That child grew up showing everyone respect, and he knew that in real life if he got in trouble and didn t follow the rules that there would be consequences to his actions. The other family raised their child without spankinghim; yes the child knew what was right and what was wrong but he didn t care because there was no discipline or consequences for his actions. The family constantly argued and yelled at each other and it was not a peaceful home. When that child grew up he didn t care for the consequences of his actions and constantly acted out in society. Not every situation are like these two but many are, the punishment of the child is up to the parent. Parents can gain a lot from spanking their child; and their child can learn a lot like discipline, respect, and taking responsibilities of their actions, and excepting the consequences. I believe in corporal punishment to an extent. Yes, I think spanking your child is effective and most kids respond to it very well. In order for spanking to be effective the parent needs to be discipline about it on themselves; for example, the parent cannot sit and tell their child that they will be getting spanked when they get home and then not follow through with their word because then that child will come to realize they can get away with anything. On the other hand, the parent cannot get carried away with spanking their child excessively; if the parent spanks their child to much then the child can become resentful and ... Now in the 21st century, it is still revolutionizing the way we live. It is high strength frames for eyeglasses; it is a strong durable frame in housing and it s precise surgical instruments used in hospital operating rooms around the world.... Competition also has resulted in increasing specialization of steel production as various producers attempt to capture different niches in the market. As international and domestic competition continue for U. S steel producers, the nature of the industry and the jobs of its workers are expected to continue to change. Domestic steel prices declined significantly during 1998 and 1999, allegedly because of dumping of subsidized, low priced steel products onto the U.S market by foreign producers. The steel industry appealed to the Government for vigorous enforcement of trade laws in response to the alleged dumping and received support from the U.S. Department of Commerce in the form of antidumping duty margins against several countries. Later, the International TradeCommission ruled against the industry claiming that the industry did not suffer irreparable damage from the extra imports. (4) The U. S Antidumping Act of September 8, 1916 allows civil actions and criminal proceedings to be brought against importers who commonly and systematically have imported or sold foreign produced goods in the United States at prices which are substantially less than the prices at which the same products are sold in a relevant foreign market, provided that such action is ... • 44. The Inferno, By Dante Throughout the Inferno, Dante has often presented characters in a way that reflects his own personality: there is the amorous and suicidal Dido for whom he shows sympathy and gives a lesser punishment, while there is the suicidal Pier delle Vigne to whom he gives a much harsher punishment. This difference in placement should reflect a strict moral code that agrees with a pre established divine order, and yet Dante demonstrates such obvious favoritism. Why? Dido loved Aeneas too much, as Dante loved Beatrice. Therefore, Dante can easily sympathize. Similarly, when Dante faces Francesca da Rimini and her lover Paolo, he experiences an immense amount of understanding and compassion yet they are there in Hell. While these characters may come... In the Commedia, Dante depicts himself as a prophet (for which God s word is the Commedia itself) who undergoes a learning experience that transforms him into a perfect prophet who is able to convey God s word without doubts or reservations. This transformation occurs gradually as Dante learns from various characters he meets throughout the journey, but probably the greatest contributor to this transformation is Ulysses. In Canto XXVI, Dante focuses on major themes regarding his spiritual condition in order to contrast Ulysses spiritual condition, some of which include the cause for damnation or salvation, a poetic and/or prophetic authority, and flight. The primary source of similarities between their spiritual states can be found in Dante s Convivio, which employs a much more philosophic and empirical perspective that ultimately led Dante into the selva scura as seen in the beginning of the Commedia. The Commedia itself is meant to turn those similarities into differences and thereby convince the reader of his transformation from Convivio to the Commedia. In Canto XXVI, as Dante the pilgrim converses with Ulysses through Virgil while assuming that Virgil understands that which Dante wishes to ask it is important to note Dante s enthusiasm for coming to understand the history and sins of each character he meets: S ei posson dentro da quelle faville parlar, diss io, maestro, assai ten priego e ripriego, che ... • 45. The Book Thief Setting Analysis We are all a product of our environment. Think about this: how would your life be different if you grew up in a completely different place? How would farm life differ from living in a metropolitan area? Well, the setting of a story has precisely the same effect on its development. In Markus Zusak s The Book Thief, a girl named Liesel Meminger grows up in WWII Germany and as a result of her parents being communists is put under foster care where she learns to read in a place where they burn literature and everything from food to what people sell in stores are under strict regulation. The setting of the story time, place, circumstance all allow the story s characters, theme and plot to develop. The setting dictates the characters and their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One theme of this novel is the power of literature and words. In fact, Zusak directly states the theme on the 126th page of his novel: Once, words had rendered Liesel useless, but now, when she sat on the floor, with the mayor s wife at her husband s desk, she felt an innate sense of power. It happened every time she deciphered a new word or pieced together a sentence. He goes on to explain that in a place such as Nazi Germany, how fitting it was that she was just now learning the power behind the words. The real irony lies here: in Nazi Germany, a girl in the Hitler youth learns to read as they have ceremonies for the purpose of burning books written by Jewish authors, and her primary practice in the summer of 1940 came from reading Jewish books in her mayor s library under the supervision of his wife. Now, if the setting were different, then this theme wouldn t have the significance that it currently has. Thus, the setting magnifies the true theme. In summation, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is greatly dependent on its setting. The setting dictates the habits and stories for the characters, such as Liesel s love of literature or Max s hard lot in life. The events in the plot are possible because of the circumstances in the setting, and the themes take on a new dimension and meaning. Overall, the setting is the true root of the aspects found in a story. It makes one wonder how the settings of our own lives have formed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
