The RMG industry has become the largest export earner for Bangladesh. It started in the 1960s with the export of shirts manufactured in Karachi. Some of the earliest RMG companies in the late 1970s included Riaz Garments, Jewel Garments, and Paris Garments. The industry has grown significantly over the past decades, contributing around 76% of Bangladesh's total export earnings. It employs over 4 million people and significantly contributes to the country's GDP. While it faced issues like child labor in the 1990s, Bangladesh was able to successfully address this and the RMG sector now plays a vital role in the country's economy.

History of RMG in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh, a South Asian country, has a population of about 1,164 million.
Bangladesh's economy is significantly dependent on agriculture. However, it is very
good news for the country that the Garments Sector (RMG) of Bangladesh has
emerged as the highest earner of foreign exchange. The sector creates about 4.2
million jobs and contributes significantly to GDP. Readymade Garments in
Bangladesh is run by young, urbanized, labor-intensive, mostly women.
The foundation of the textile sector was first established in the 60s of the 19th
century. For the first time, the industry exported shirts in the European market in
1966, which were manufactured from Karachi.
Later, export industries were available in 1977-78. The three largest industries at that
time were Riaz Garments, Jewel Garments and Paris Garments. Of these, Riaz
Garments was the most famous and oldest art of the time.
Earlier, Riaz Garments started a business with some sewing shops called Riaz
Store. Later, the name was changed from Riaz Stores to Riaz Garments in 1973
and since 1978 the company started exporting products abroad by exporting 1
million pieces of shirts from a South Korean company called "Hollanda". "Desh
Garments" Bangladesh is another pioneer in the RMG sector. In 1979, Desh
Garments started a joint venture with the South Korean company "Daewoo". At the
same time a number of garments were introduced by Shamsur Rahman Limited
Stylecraft, AM Subid Ali, Aristocraft Limited, Engineer Mohammad Fazlul Azim's
Azim Group and Major Abdul Mannan's Sunman Group.
Following the pioneers of the RMG sector, some more prudent and hardworking
entrepreneurs started their RMG business in the country. From there, the RMG
sector in Bangladesh was developing day by day and there is no need to look back.

3. Although this sector has gone through various critical stages. At that time, we
learned about child labor in 1994 and in 1995 we very successfully freed our
garment industry from child labor. The role of RMG sector in the economy of
Bangladesh is significant. It has been observed that, over the last decade, the RMG
sector has contributed significantly to the national economy. About 76% of the total
export earnings come from the RMG sector. According to the statistics, it is known
that in FY 2003-04 RMG sector of Bangladesh earned US$ 5,686.06 million, in FY
2004-05 the value was US$ 6,417.67.67 million, in FY 2005-06 the value was US$
7900.80 million, in FY 2006-07 the value was US$ 9,211.23 million, in FY 2007-
08 the value was US$ 10,699.80 million, in FY 2008-09 the value was US$ 12.35
billion and finally in FY 2013-14 the value stands at $24.49billion.
