History of music videos
1. 1926 – ‘Talkies’ were
introduced. This is when
footage is synced with
sound.
1930’s – This is the era when music videos were
first introduced. These music videos were filmed
in black and white and mainly focused on the
Jazz gene of music. These videos were heavily
based on the performance.
1983 – This is when “Thriller” by Michael
Jackson was released. It was one of the
longest lasing music videos ever (14
minutes) at the time with a beginning,
middle and end. This is when music
videos started to introduce the idea of
narrative based music videos!
2005 – YouTube was created. Thousands of
music videos are uploaded on to here.
1995- the most expensive music video
in history was made. ‘Scream’ by
Michael Jackson cost $7million to make.
2013 - As of August
2013 ‘Gangnam style’
by PSY is the most
viewed video on
YouTube.
1964 – The Beatles released their first major
motion music video ‘A Hard Day’s night’ which
although it was released over 50 years ago, the
video its self was structured and edited very
well – similar to some seen today.
1975 – ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen was a milestone in
the music video industry. The video consisted of visual effects
and a live performance and the song even managed 9 weeks
at the top of the charts!
1981 – This is when MTV was launched. This is globally known
as a well respected music channel and has become a large base
for artists to showcase their music videos. This has increased
the creativity and style of music videos artists create as they
want to stand out! ‘Video killed the radio star’ was the first
music video to ever air on the channel!
