1. The History of Music Videos
A music video is visuals that accompanya piece of
music or song. They were originally made to promote
a song or artist.
1926: Talkies were introduced. Talkies were musical
short films that featured singers, bands and dancers.
1930: Screenshots were introduced. These were
cartoon films that allowed audiences to sing along by
‘following the bouncing ball’. The musical genre of
films was introduced and performancesof songs were
embeddedinto these.
1940: The arrival of promotional films. Short films of bands performing whilst
on a movie-setstage.
1956: Alongsidethe rise of television, music became
more popular as television aided to the promotionof
upcoming singers.
1964: ‘A Hard Days Night’ by The Beatles was the
first modern music video with motion picture.
1965: The Beatles used promotional films to promote
their new album release.
1970s:The years when music videos as we know now began to come about.
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen held the no1 spoton top of the pops due to
the visuals alongside their song.
1981: MTV invented and music videos were
broadcasted on a 24 hour basis.
1983: The most successful and influential
video of all time: Thriller by Micheal Jackson
was released.
1985: VH1 invented, featuring soft music that
suits the olderdemographic which widened
audiences.
2. 1992: MTV began listing directors alongside the artist and song credits
highlighting music video as a form of art.
1995: Scream by Micheal Jackson released with a cost of 7 million to
produce, it became the most expensive music video ever.
2000: RockDJ by Robbie Williams caused issues due to graphic content and
was eventually censored in the UK during daytime hours and only screened
after 10pm.
2005: The launch of Youtube changing the world of
music yet again. Videos became much faster and
easier to access. It’s now one of the most popular
websites in the world changing the music industry
completelywith the average video getting at least a million
views.
2007: 4 music invented, a TV channel that broadcasted music on a 24 hour
basis, it quickly became one of the
top 10 most viewed channels.
2012: Gangnam Style by PSY was
released on the 15th of July. It’s the
most viewed music video on
youtube of all time with 2.729 billion
views.
2016: The internet has now become
the primary income marketing place
for music videos.Alongside this: Spotify, Google Music and The iTunes Store
are the top three most popular ways people listen to and download music.
