2. Simon Frith believed that music
videos came in three types:
1. Performance
2. Narrative
3. Conceptual
3. According to Frith, this is the most common type of music video
produced. Performance videos are simply what it says in the name,
they involve the artist/performer simply singing to enthusiastic fans
At a concert. These type of music videos aim to allow the audience to
see what it would be to attend one of their concerts and aims for the
audience to get a feel of what a concert is like. This technique is most
commonly used in indie/rock music where the artist is visible
throughout most of the music Video. However, for this to be
successful the artist creating this type of music video must be well
established in order to have an effect on the audience.

4. Narrative videos include a series of events in which create a story for
the audience. These types of videos are mostly about love stories/
relationships. A good example is Taylor Swifts ‘love story’ which you

5. These type of music videos rely on poetic form. Conceptual videos do
not tell a story in linear form but more create a mood/atmosphere for
the audience. They focus more on evoking individual thoughts from
the audience, leaving them to interpret the music video in their own
way. Conceptual videos leave the viewer guessing with the possibility
of having multiple meanings, many metaphors are used throughout
these type of videos. These types of videos are usually
unusual/obscure.
