Napoleon Bonaparte was a military leader and emperor of France who lived from 1769 to 1821. He rose to power during a period of political turmoil in France following the French Revolution. As a military strategist, he led France to numerous victories across Europe. By 1804, he had crowned himself Emperor of France and united much of Europe under French control, though his invasion of Russia proved disastrous for his army. Napoleon had a significant impact on European politics and architecture during his rule and remained a controversial figure even after his eventual defeat and exile.
