6. FRANCE AND EUROPEAN UNION
One of the founding fathers of European unity was the statesman
Robert Schuman. He was a qualified lawyer. Between 1948 and 1952 he
was French foreign minister. In cooperation with Jean Monnet he drew
up the internationally renowned Schuman Plan. He proposed joint
control of coal and steel production, the most important materials for the
armaments industry. His Plan was published on 9 May 1950. This date
is regarded as the birth of European Union.
„The six states signed the agreement for the European Coal and
Steel Community in Paris in April 1951. In this way, Europe began as a
peace initiative.”
Robert Schuman was also President of the European Parliament
between 1958-1960.

19. HISTORY OF FRANCE
The Celtic Gauls arrive in France in 700-500BC.
In 58-50BC Roman Emperor Julius Caesar defeats the Gauls in 58-50
BC and France becomes part of the Roman Empire until 476AD.
During the Middle Age, Charles I (Charlemagne), the Kings of the
Franks, united most of Western Europe and laid the foundations for
modern France and Germany. In 768 he took the Frankish throne and in 774
became King of Italy. In 800 he became the first Holy Roman Emperor - the
first recognized Roman emperor in Western Europe since the collapse of
the Western Roman Empire three centuries earlier. The expanded Frankish
state created by Charles I is called the Carolingian Empire.
20. The Hundred Years’ War was a series of conflicts waged from
1337 to 1453 between Kingdom of England and Kingdom of France
in order to control of the latter Kingdom. Joan of Arc is considered
a French heroine of this war and a Roman Catholic saint.
Louis XIV (5 September 1638 – 1 September 1715), known
as Louis the Great (Louis le Grand) or the Sun King (le Roi-
Soleil), was a monarch who ruled as King of France from 1643 until
his death. His reign lasted 72 years and 110 days.
French was ruled by kings for many centuries until the storming
of the Bastille during the French Revolution in 1789.
Then Napoleon becomes Emperor of the French Republic until
he is sent to exile.

21. WORLD WAR I
„World War I was a major conflict fought between 1914 and 1918.
Who fought in World War I?
World War I was fought between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. The main members
of the Allied Powers were France, Russia, and Britain. The United States also fought on the side of
the Allies after 1917. The main members of the Central Powers were Germany, Austria-
Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.
Major Battles
Some of the major battles during the war included the First Battle of the Marne, Battle of the Somme,
Battle of Tannenberg, Battle of Gallipoli and the Battle of Verdun.
How did it end?
The fighting ended on November 11, 1918 when a general armistice was agreed to by both sides.
The war officially ended between Germany and the Allies with the signing of the Treaty of
Versailles.”

29. FRENCH CUISINETo eat is for French people a lifestyle. Fertlile soil of France provides people with fresh fruit
and vegetables, grain and herbs. The Mediterranean Sea and the Atlanitc Ocean offer a lot of fish
and seafruit.
France is also famous in the world for its fine wine, its soil being suitable for growing
grapes.
Every region of France has its own particular cheeses. There are 365 types of French cheese.
Brie, Camembert and roquefort are among them.
The most important part of every French meal is the baguette that can be served in different
ways and used to make sandwiches.
Soupe au Pistou is made with dried beans, zucchini and tomatoes, potatoes herbs and a small
shape of pasta. The pistou is added at the end.
