Let’s do a bit of Geography...
Information retrieval
• What are the rules?
• You tell me!
River Ganges
• Hindu legend states Ganga (Ganges)
is a goddess and the daughter of the
king of the mountains. Ganga had the
power to purify anything that
touched her and she flowed from the
heavens and purified the people of
India. Hindu belief holds that bathing
in the river Ganges causes the
forgiveness of sins.
Varanasi
• Many Hindus believe that to be in the Ganges,
especially at the holy city of Varanasi, at the time
of your death means you will become one with
Brahman (main Hindu God). This is not the first
world, nor is it the first universe. There have
been and will be many more worlds and
universes than there are drops of water in the
holy river Ganges. The universes are made by
Lord Brahma the Creator, maintained by Lord
Vishnu the Preserver and destroyed by Lord
Shiva. Since the universes must be destroyed
before they can be recreated, Lord Shiva is called
the Destroyer and Re-creator.
Ghats
• Special entry points called ‘ghats’ are
built to help people to get in and out of
the river. They are also used for
cremating bodies by the river. All
Hindus would like their ashes to be
scattered into the Ganges to help
cleanse them of their sins.
Reincarnation
• This belief in reincarnation, in the cycle of life, strongly influences
the lifestyle of may Hindus. It can best be explained by the terms
'dharma' and 'karma'. Dharma may be translated as 'duty' and for
Hindus, part of that duty is to respect and care for all living things.
• The belief that after death we are reborn in another body, not
necessarily human, leads to a great respect for all life and results in
many cases of vegetarianism. Karma is the result or product of
what we do. If we do our duty, then we create good karma, since
the next life we may have is directly related to the actions of our
present life.
• To the Hindu, everything is part of the Supreme One, and thus
every living thing is equally important in the great cycle of life.
For many Hindus, religion is a matter
of practice rather than of beliefs.
• It's more what you do, than what you
believe.
• Hindus believe in a universal soul or God
called Brahman. Brahman takes on many
forms that some Hindus worship as gods or
goddesses in their own right. Hindus
believe that there is a part of Brahman in
everyone and this is called the Atman.
What is the Hindu way of life?
• For many Hindus there are four goals in human life
• 1. Moksha - the release of the soul (Atman) from the cycle of rebirth.
The individual soul (Atman) unites with Brahman the universal soul.
• How a person is reincarnated is determined by karma.
• 2. Dharma - the code for leading one's life.
Respect for elders is considered important and many consider
marriage as a son's religious duty.
• 3. Artha - the pursuit of material gain by lawful means.
• 4. Karma- through pure acts, knowledge and devotion, you can
reincarnate to a higher level. The opposite achieves the contrary
result.

• 6. What is moksha?
• 7. What is dharma?
• 8. What is karma?
• 9. What is reincarnation?
