Heat-related illnesses occur when the body is unable to cool itself during extremely hot weather or strenuous activity. When the heat index is above 95°F, mortality increases with higher temperatures and longer heat waves. Heat stroke is a medical emergency defined by a core body temperature over 104°F and alterations in mental status. Early recognition of symptoms and rapid cooling can prevent fatalities from heat stroke. Certain medications, medical conditions, and strenuous exercise can increase risks of heat-related illness.
