A piece of equipment built for efficient heat transfer from
one medium to another
 A heat exchanger is a device designed to
efficiently transfer or "exchange" heat from one
matter to another.
 When a fluid is used to transfer heat, the
fluid could be a liquid, such as water or oil, or
could be moving air.
 The most well known type of heat
exchanger is a car radiator.
FLOW
ARRANGEMENT
 In parallel flow heat
exchangers, the two fluid
enter the exchanger at the
same end and travel in
parallel to one another to
the other side.
FLOW
ARRANGEMENT
 In a cross-flow heat
exchanger, the fluids
travel roughly
perpendicular to one
another through the
exchanger.
FLOW ARRANGEMENT
 In counter flow heat
exchangers the fluids
enter the exchanger
from opposite ends.
The counter current
design is the most
efficient.
TYPES OF HEAT EXCHANGERS
 Double pipe heat exchanger
 Shell and tube heat exchanger
 Plate heat exchangers
DOUBLE PIPE HEAT EXCHANGER
• It is also known as concentric tube heat
exchanger
• In this heat exchanger the fluid to be
cooled or heated passes through the tube 2
(green) and the other fluid is passed
through tube 1 (red) to absorb or release
the heat
ADVANTAGES:
► Cheap for both design and
maintenance
DISADVANTAGE:
 Low efficiency and requires
large space
APPLICATIONS
Double pipe heat exchangers are used
in many industrial processes, cooling
technology, refrigeration device,
sustainable energy applications and
another field
SHELL AND TUBE EXCHANGER
• As its name implies, this type of heat exchanger consists
of a shell (a large pressure vessel) with a bundle of tubes
inside it
• One fluid runs through the tubes, and another fluid
flows over the tubes (through the shell) to transfer
heat between the two fluids.
SHELL AND TUBE EXCHANGER
• The set of tubes is
called a tube bundle,
and may be composed
of several types of
tubes: plain,
longitudinally finned,
etc.
TYPE OF SHELL AND TUBE HEAT
EXCHANGER
APPLICATION OF SHELL AND TUBE
HEAT EXCHANGER
• Removal of process heat and feed water preheating
• Cooling of hydraulic and lube oil
• Cooling of turbine, compressor, and engine
• Condensing process vapor or steam
• Evaporating process liquid or steam
Plate Heat Exchangers
 The plate heat exchanger (PHE)
is a specialized design well suited to
transferring heat between medium-
and low-pressure fluids.
A plate heat exchanger is a type
of heat exchanger that uses metal plates
to transfer heat between two fluids.
APPLICATIONS OF
PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS
 Water heaters
 Cooling tower isolation
 Free cooling
 Waste heat recovery
 Heat pump isolation
 Thermal (ice) storage systems
SELECTION
 Cost
High/low pressure limits
 Thermal performance
 Temperature ranges
 Product mix (liquid/liquid, particulates or
high- solids liquid)
 Pressure drops across the exchanger
 Fluid flow capacity
 Cleanability, maintenance and repair
 Materials required for construction
 Ability and ease of future expansion
Maintenance
•Plate and frame heat exchangers can be disassembled and cleaned
periodically. Tubular heat exchangers can be cleaned by such methods as acid
cleaning, sandblasting, high-pressure water jet, bullet cleaning, or drill rods.
•In large-scale cooling water systems for heat exchangers, water
treatment such as purification, addition of chemicals, and testing, is used to
minimize fouling of the heat exchange equipment. Other water treatment is also
used in steam systems for power plants, etc. to minimize fouling and corrosion
of the heat exchange and other equipment.
