Heart sounds can be studied using three methods: listening with a stethoscope, using a microphone, or recording with a phonocardiogram. When using a stethoscope, the chest piece is placed over four auscultation areas - the mitral, tricuspid, pulmonary, and aortic areas - to listen for the first and second heart sounds produced by the closing of the corresponding valves. The mitral area is located in the left fifth intercostal space and the tricuspid area is over the xiphoid process.
