Hospital information systems (HIS) are comprehensive, integrated and
specialized information systems designed to manage the
administrative, financial and clinical aspects of hospitals and
healthcare facilities.
They are considered one of the most important focal points on which
the delivery of healthcare within hospitals and different types of
medical institutions depends

5. RADIOLOGY INFORMATION
SYSTEM (RIS)
A Radiology Information System is a sophisticated database system
that radiology medical professionals use to keep track of patient data
and the enormous image files typically generated in the course of
diagnosis and treatment. A RIS is a special kind of electronic health
record or EHR system designed specifically for use in radiology.

6. PICTURE ARCHIVE &
COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
(PACS)
PACS stands for Picture Archive and Communication System.
In a PACS, you store standard 2D images along with 3D images.
Radiology professionals use PACS to View and store all the diagnostic
imaging files on Servers instead of Printing it
The universal format for PACS image storage and transfer
is DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine).

8. THE NEED FOR HL7
All hospitals or other Healthcare organizations have many different
technologies in use by clinicians, administrative staff, billing offices, and
others.
It is common for these systems (HIS,RIS,PACKS) to be developed on different
platforms, and coded in different programming languages.
There are lab systems, EMRs, staff management systems, pharmacy
automation, business applications, and a host of others. Without a common
standard, the data between these systems would stay segregated, resulting
in:
Users needing to log into multiple systems
Inability to make good use of data
Risk to patient safety
Inefficient workflows

9. WHAT IS HL7
HL7 is an industry accepted standard for communicating data, even
among competing systems (DIFFERENT VENDORS)
It has some flexibility to adjust to customizations without causing
huge problems
HL7 messages are displayed in a text format
It is fairly easy to learn the messaging format
The result is a seamless appearance of data to non-technical users
