This document summarizes biological and health changes across the human lifespan from infancy to adulthood. It discusses patterns of growth in infancy and average height and weight milestones. In childhood, it outlines important health factors like immunization, poverty, and nutrition. Puberty brings body changes through hormonal development. Adolescence involves continued physical development and risks like eating disorders and drug use. Physical traits change in adulthood with age like loss of muscle mass and increased disease risk. Nutrition and exercise recommendations aim to promote health at each stage.
Nutritional Status of School Age Children in Private Elementary Schools: Basi...IJAEMSJORNAL
Department of Education (DepEd) organizes nutritional programs to improve the health status of children in public schools. Likewise, the researcher believes that health awareness must be raised in private schools as well. This study aimed to affect the community to be aware and more knowledgeable about nutrition. Specifically, this study focused on the nutritional status of school age children in private elementary schools in Santa Rosa, Nueva Ecija. It sought to determine the profile of the learners, anthropometrics, clinical data and the knowledge of the learners as to dietary and the significant relationship between the profile of the learners and the nutritional status of the school aged children. With all the data gathered a meal management program was proposed. The study employed the quantitative description design. The study manifests that majority of the respondents were not yet aware of what they eat. In addition, age, greatly affects the respondent’s anthropometrics as to height. More so, age, number of siblings and family income, greatly affect the respondents’ anthropometrics as to weight. The researcher adopted the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipino program that was developed by the DOST- FNRI.
A Study on Assessment of Knowledge of Reproductive Health Education among the...AnuragSingh1049
Adolescence is a life’s essential transition phase starting around 10, 11 or 12 years and concludes between the age of 18-21 years. Deficiency of reproductive health information and sexual experimentations in this stage of storm and stress expose adolescents to grave health pressure. Adolescents must have access to logical Reproductive Health information to increase healthy attitude towards Reproductive Health issues. The aim of writing this paper was to assess the the knowledge of adolescent students studying in Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir state towards Reproductive Health Education and to be familiar with reproductive health issues among adolescents. The present study was carried out on 400 Adolescent Higher Secondary School students of Jammu region using a well designed pre-tested questionnaire. The results of our study showed that students had constructive attitude towards Reproductive Health Education as majority (boys = 86.0%, girls=84.5%) of respondents recommended Reproductive Health Education in school curriculum. Further, 40.0% boys and 35.5% girl respondents were of the opinion that lecture by expert is a preferred method of imparting Reproductive Health Education, 32.0% boys and 28.5% girl students under study favored to communicate with Doctors/Health Workers followed by parents brothers/sisters (23.0%) in case of girls and friends (23.5%) in case of boys concerning Reproductive Health issues. Further, the study revealed that girl students (51.5%) favored to get married under 24 years as they were of the belief that it is the prime of life, and can give birth without much troubles whereas majority of boys understudy (65.5%) told that they prefer to get married above 24 years as they desire to complete education first and find a appropriate job in order to feed family unit. Majority of the respondents (58.5%) believed that youth living in urban areas possesses more knowledge about reproductive health than youth living in rural areas. Further, majority of the students possesses good knowledge about HIV/AIDS and STDs. It is concluded from our study that there is a requirement of providing proper scientific information to teenagers concerning reproductive health by incorporating Reproductive Health Education in school syllabus and lectures by experts in order to advance their awareness and consequently reproductive health condition.
The Correlation between Nutrition Status and Gross Motor Development: A Case ...Premier Publishers

The result of the data obtained t count equal to 8.352>t table of 2,00665 and obtained the coefficient of determination of 0.573. So, it can be concluded that there was a positive and significant relationship between nutritional status and gross motor development of children aged 4-5 years in Serang. The big influence which given the nutritional status of gross motor development reaches 57.3%.
Young girls in developed countries are primarily affected with eating disorders. Persons with anorexia are honest, do not disobey, and hide their inner feeling, tend to be good in whatever they do and often excellent athletes. Research says that anorexia people eat less to gain a sense of control over their lives.

Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory
Does society or culture have an impact on child development? Of course! Each individual has a different religious, ethnic, and economic background. Since all of those factors influence our development, there has been a rise in research studies that address the cultural context of children’s lives. Researchers are examining the effect of culturally specific beliefs and practices on development.
Sociocultural theory, developed by Lev Vygotsky, focuses on how culture is transmitted to the next generation. Vygotsky believed that social interaction with more knowledgeable members of society is necessary for children to develop the ways of thinking and behaving that comprise a community’s culture. He saw cognitive development as a socially mediated process in which children depend on assistance from peers and adults as they take on new challenges. One additional discovery of cross-cultural research is that each individual culture may emphasize different tasks for childr
Ecological Systems Theory
Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917–2005) posited that our environment, consisting of our home, school, neighborhood, and beyond, is a series of structures that form a system. Each layer of that system interacts with the others and has a powerful impact on development. According to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, children develop within this complex system of relationships and are affected by multiple levels of the surrounding environment.

An Illustration of Ecological Systems Theory: The Transition to Siblinghood
The early weeks after a new baby enters the family are full of profound changes. While the arrival of a newborn sibling is a normative life event for many children, the transition to siblinghood can result in a mixture of positive and negative emotions. Some children welcome the new arrival, while others experience a developmental setback in a specific area like toilet training. Volling (2005) provides a developmental ecological systems approach to examine changes in both child and family functioning that occur with the birth of a new baby.

Significant changes occur within the immediate family (microsystem). Because the mother may spend most of the early weeks after the birth caring for the newborn, the quality of the father–child relationship may be particularly important for sibling adjustment.

Obesity in Midwestern Adolescents
It is no secret that obesity in America is at an alarming level and although we see its prevalence in adults, we often fail to discuss its rising rates within adolescents. Children are now facing the possibility of higher mortality rates, when in reality, children should be living longer than their parents. With obesity striking Midwestern communities, this paper aims to focus on understanding why children in these communities are at a higher risk and what actions are needed to help them overcome this harmful life style. This is incredibly important in order to restore and maintain health. Children who are obese have a higher comorbidity for chronic diseases that typically only affect adults such as, type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia as well as psychological disorders. This stresses the importance that adolescents should be happy and healthy, not a statistic.
Target Population: Midwestern Adolescents
To be considered as this paper’s target population an individual must meet two criteria: the person must reside in the American Midwest and be an adolescent. The State of Obesity (2016-17) ranks all fifty states against one another in obesity. Although the rankings are not confined to adolescents, it highlights where midwestern states stand in relation to the rest of the United States. The lower the number next to the state, higher portion of the population is obese : 6. Ohio (18.6%), 10. Iowa (17.7%), 11. Indiana (17.5%), 12. Michigan (17.3%), 17. Illinois (16.2%), 23. Nebraska (15.5%), 31. Wisconsin (14.3%), 34. South Dakota (13.6%), 38. Kansas (13.0%), 40. Missouri (12.7%), 42. North Dakota (12.5%) and 48. Minnesota (10.4%).These statistics provide an overview of midwestern obesity, let us now turn to risk factors contributing to adolescent specific obesity. The goal of Healthy People 2020 is to increase life expectancy and quality of life. According to their website, 1 in 6 children and adolescents are obese. That number is concerning because many adolescents do not understand the consequences of their actions and how it can be detrimental later on in their adult years. Healthy People 2020 initiatives are aimed in helping adolescents in 1. achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, 2. Reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, 3. Reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer, 4. Strengthen muscles, bones and joints and 5. Improve mood and energy level (Healthy People 2020, n.d.).According to Stanford Children’s Health (n.d.),one of the biggest contributors to adolescent obesity is excessive food intake which results in a surplus of caloric intake. A diet that is high in sugar and fat, as well as processed, will result in weight gain. As busy parents tend to their kids and their extracurriculars, eating on the go often results in poor food and bev.

Effect of Mothers Working and Non Working Status on the Nutritional Status of...YogeshIJTSRD
Health and nutritional status are two crucial and interlinked aspects of human development, which in to interact with demographic variables Malnutrition a condition that occurs due to intake of inadequate amount of nutrients leading to insufficient nourishment continues to be a problem of considerable magnitude in most of the developing countries in the world. Preschool children are one of the most nutritionally vulnerable segments of the population. Nutrition during the first 5 years has not only an impact on growth and morbidity during childhood, but also acts as a determinant of nutritional status in adolescent and adult life. Global comparative data indicate that contrary to common perception, prevalence of under nutrition is highest in South Asian children. India has the highest occurrence of childhood malnutrition in the world. Malnutrition is responsible for 55 percent of all deaths of children younger than 5 years of age globally. Malnutrition makes a child susceptible to infections and delayed recovery, thus increasing mortality and morbidity. It is therefore logical to direct attention to the quality of life of the survivors Bose and Das, 2010 . The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
3. Patterns of Growth
• Cephalocaudal Pattern
• Sensory and motor development goes
from head to foot
• For example, infants can use their hands
long before crawling and walking
• Proximodistal Pattern
• Development begins from the center of
the body and moves outward
• For example, infants use their whole
hand as a unit before being able to
control their fingers (Santrock, 2020)
(Themes, 2016)
4. Infant Height and Weight
Birth and first months
Average size: 20 in., 7.5 lbs*
Most infants lose 5-7% of body weight
in first days of life
Firsth month
Infants gain an average of 5-6 oz./week
Fourth month
Birth weight doubles
First year
Birth weight triples
Length increases by 50%
Second year
Growth slows
Average height: 32-35 in.
(Santrock, 2020)
*North American averages
5. Infant Nutrition
• Children require nutrition and a nurturing,
supportive environment
• The American Academy of Pediatrics (2012)
recommends breast feeding through six months,
however, breast vs. bottle feeding studies are
correlational, not experimental (Santrock, 2020)
(Sarah Chai, n.d.)
7. Childhood Health Factors
• The most important factors in children's health:
• Prevention: timely immunization, avoiding accidents (e.g., falls, suffocation,
burns)
• Poverty: about 7% of U.S. children do not have health care, 11 million
preschool children are malnourished – health care alone cannot address
these issues, programs need to improve conditions of the entire family
• UNICEF's (2018, 2019) under-5 mortality rate attributes these factors:
• Nutritional health and knowledge, immunization, dehydration, availability of
health services, availability of income, and clean and safe sanitation, and
overall safety (Santrock, 2020)
8. Childhood Height and Weight
Preschool years
As children grow, the increase in height and weight
decreases with each additional year (Marcdante & Kliegman,
2018)
Growth patterns vary individually (Hockenberry, Wilson, &
Rodgers, 2019)
Elementary school years
Children grow an average of 2 to 3 in./year
At 8 years old, the average child is 4'2", 56 lbs.
Weight gain due to increase in the size of the skeletal and
muscular systems (Santrock, 2020)
Middle and late childhood
Changes in proportions (e.g., head, waist, and leg length
decrease in relation to body height (Hockenberry, Wilson, &
Rodgers, 2019)
Height is attributed to genetics, ethnicity, and nutrition
(Santrock, 2020)
9. Childhood Nutrition and Exercise
• Childhood obesity
• Rates of obesity have increased in the United States
• Children who are overweight may be at risk for medical and psychological
difficulties (Santrock, 2020)
• Children require daily exercise for both muscle and cognitive development
• Experts recommend children get 15 min of physical activity per hour over a 12-hour period
• Aerobic exercise improves attention, memory, creativity, and academic success
• Studies show the importance of parents' encouragement of physical activity
• (Santrock, 2020)
11. Puberty
Nguyen (2019) defines puberty as a brain-neuroendocrine process that
stimulates rapid physical changes in early adolescence (Santrock, 2020)
(Planned Parenthood, n.d.)
12. Body Changes in Puberty
Male
• Penis and testicles
grow, voice lowers,
chest and shoulders
broaden, hair may grow
on face, chest, and
back
• Peak rate of change at
13.5 years (Santrock,
2020)
All Bodies
• Acne, body odor,
armpit and public hair,
pain in your arms and
legs (growing pains),
growth spurt between
3.5-4 in.
Female
• Breasts enlarge, hips
widen, menstruation
begins, and labia may
change color and grow
(Planned Parenthood,
n.d.)
• Peak rate of change at
11.5 years (Santrock,
2020)
13. Hormonal Changes in Puberty
• Hormones are powerful chemical substances secreted by the endocrine glands
and carried through the body by the bloodstream (Hsueh & He, 2018)
• The endocrine system's role in puberty involves:
• the hypothalamus, a structure in the brain involved with sexual behavior
• the pituitary gland, which controls growth and regulation of the gonads
• the gonads, sex glands (testes in males and ovaries in females)
•Two key hormones increase in puberty:
• Testosterone develops genitals, increases height, and deepens the voice
• Estradiol causes breast, uterine, and skeletal development
14. Hormonal Changes in Puberty Cont.
• Transgender, intersex, or nonbinary youth may experience puberty changes
that do not line up with their gender identity
• Some young people may decide to take puberty blockers, or medicines that
block testosterone and estrogen, preventing the onset of puberty (Planned
Parenthood, n.d.)
• Social factors can sometimes play a larger role in adolescent psychological
development than hormonal factors
• Stress, nutrition, exercise, sexual activity, and depression can activate or
suppress hormones
• Early maturation has negative outcomes for girls, putting them at
increased risk for psychical and verbal abuse from their environment
• (Santrock, 2020)
15. Adolescent Nutrition and Exercise
• Rate of obesity in adolescents is on the rise
• Successful interventions include calorie restriction, exercise, reduction
of sedentary activity, and behavioral therapy
• Research shows adolescents tend to be less active than during
childhood
• Boys are more likely to engage in moderate to vigorous exercise than girls
• Exercise is linked to positive outcomes, including:
• Reduced triglyceride levels, lower blood pressure, lower incidence of type
II diabetes
• Improved academic, cognitive, and socioemotional development
• (Santrock, 2022)
16. Adolescents and Eating Disorders
"Disease and disability strike with a double whammy: Not only do
they cause pain, distress, and loss, but they also trigger a social reaction,
and the prejudice and discrimination that often accompany illness can be
as limiting as the condition itself" (Corrigan, 2014)
• Genes play a role in disordered eating, but it also disproportionately
impacts adolescent girls and young adult women
• Anorexia Nervosa involves 1) restricted energy intake, 2) presence of
intense fear of gaining weight, and/or 3) not recognizing the seriousness
of current low weight
• Bulimia Nervosa involving binge-and-purge eating at least twice a week
for three months
• Binge Eating Disorder involves frequent binge eating
17. Adolescent Drug Use
• The U.S. has one of the highest adolescent drug use rates
• Development, parents, peers, and educational success play
an important role in preventing drug abuse
• Substance use peaks in emerging adulthood and decreases
by the mid-twenties (Santrock, 2020)
Binge drinking (Santrock, 2020)
19. Adulthood Physical Traits
20s
Height is consistent
Peak physical performance (i.e.,
muscle tone, strength, and joint
health)
30s
Muscles lose elasticity
New body aches
40s
Lose height and gain weight
Skin wrinkles from loss of collagen in
tissues
50s
Hair thins and grays
Muscle and bone loss
Increase in cardiovascular disease
Decreased lung capasity
Menopause
60+
Weight drops from lower muscle
mass
Increased likelihood of hypertension
(Santrock, 2020)
20. Adulthood Nutrition and Exercise
• Obesity is a pervasive health problem that continues into adulthood
• Linked to increased risk of earlier death, hypertension, diabetes,
and cardiovascular disease
• Regular exercise can promote health and increase longevity
• Older adults spend more time exercising than previous generations
• Current recommendation for adults 60+ is 30 minutes of aerobic activity
• Resistance training also improves physical function, psychological well-
being, and quality of life
• Alcohol use goes down in older adults, however there is a concern over abuse
of prescription and illicit drugs (Santrock, 2020)
