Descriptive Essay About Christmas
Ever since I was younger, decorating our Christmas tree has always been a big deal in my
family. We decorate just about two weeks before Christmas, always on a Sunday night after our
family dinner. This night has always been special to me, in fact it is probably one of my favorite
parts of the Christmas season. My grandparents who are local come over, we turn on Christmas
music, and the fireplace. We have Christmas cookies with hot chocolate and just make a night of
it. The last part of the night, but arguably the most important, is when my Dad places our glass
angel atop the tree. It signifies, to me at least, the reason we celebrate Christmas, the birth of
Jesus Christ. However, lately, I ve noticed a recent trend that confuses me. In the past couple
years I ve noticed that people, even those in my own extended family, use items either from
popular culture, or just random things they find important, as their tree toppers. My Uncle Mike
and Aunt Kelly use a Phillies baseball hat, my Aunt Maureen and Uncle Steve use a personalized
set of Mickey Mouse ears from their honeymoon, my friend Nicoletta and her family simply use
a plain, old santa hat. I grew up to believe and see Christmas as a religious holiday, we go to mass
on Christmas Eve and on Christmas day, it s just a part of our tradition. Growing up, I just
assumed everyone else held these ideas and traditions as well. So to see people so close to me
change something I thought was so sacred and something everyone else

Gattac A Futuristic And Dystopian Society
Dystopia is defined as a futuristic, imaginary universe in which oppressive societal control and the
illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral or
totalitarian control. Dystopias, though an exaggerated worst case scenario, making a critical and
current trend, societal norm, or political system. The films I have chosen to analyze Snowpiercer
directed by Joon Ho Bong, Gattacadirected by Andrew Niccol both are movies that show this genre
of a futuristic and dystopian society. Snowpiercer and Gattaca show conventions that convey this
genre through a dystopian protagonist who standing up against a higher power, restrictions upon
freedom and inequality(discrimination) in Gattaca the protagonist Vincent stands up to the labels
of valids and invalids and the discrimination between the two labels in order to achieve his
dreams, even though he commits identity fraud. Whereas others conforms to; their DNAas a way to
live their lives. In Snowpiercer The movie takes place aboard the globe spanning Snowpiercer
train which holds the last remnants of humanity after an attempt at climate engineering in order to
stop global warming has unintentionally created a new ice age. Curtis Everett a member of the
lower class passengers who have been place in the tail section, leads a revolution against the elites
in the front of the train in order to get control.

The Murder Of Jack The Ripper
Police and Crime Investigators are still asking questions about the notorious murderer Jack the
Ripper. His victims, letters, and the wild investigation all lead up to a mystery that may never be
solved. Who was Jack the Ripper? April 3rd, 1888, in the East End of London near the
Whitechapel District, the first of five of the most famous unsolved murder cases in history
occurred. Emma Smith, a local prostitute, was maliciously attacked by a gang at the Wentworth
Street Junction on Osborn Street. The gang robbed her of all her money and beat her senseless.
They even forced a blunt object into her genitalia. Smith survived her initial attack and managed to
struggle back to her home on George Street where several of her neighbors became aware... Show

Like the other victims, she was also a prostitute. On September 8, 1888, a bit before six in the
morning, John Davis, an elderly man who resided at 29 Hanbury Street, was walking downstairs
through the dark passageway that would lead him outside when he witnessed a sight that would
render him horrified. He then saw two men walking through the same passageway, so he called
them over. They followed John Davis into the backyard of the building where they all witnessed
the mutilated body of Annie Chapman lying between the steps of the building and a wooden
fence. Her head was turned toward the house and her clothes had been hoisted above her waist
just like the other victims. Her hands were covered in blood, and her throat had been slashed. The
three men go off to search for a police, and eventually Inspector Chandler arrives. He calls for
medical help and a man named Dr. Bagster Phillips comes to the scene. He left a testimony that
stated,

Organic Dyes Lab Report
The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize two organic dyes then observe their effective dye
strength on various synthetic and natural materials. This was achieved by means of chemical
reactions outlined below, heat to increase the reaction rate, ice baths to precipitate out the product,
vacuum filtration to isolate the product, washing with water and 95% ethanol to purify the
product, and dying of the clothe to observe dye effectiveness. The test of the effectiveness of the
dye required that the fabric absorb one wavelength and then reflect the opposing color, and then be
able to keep the color through basic washing. The presence of the dye on the fabric can be caused
by ionic interaction, hydrogen bonding, covalent bonding, or simply... Show more content on

This also causes the percent yield to be unobtainable. The theoretical yield of the azo dye was
found to be 0.922g of Orange II. Potential sources of error can be found during heating and
cooling of the azo dye. Increased temperature during heating resulted in the dye being dissolved
very well into the liquid, and when the flask was removed it was not properly cooled all of the way
before being poured into the vacuum filtration system. Due to the solubility of the product in the
solution, the improper cooling caused the solid to not precipitate out correctly, resulting in the lack

Online Shopping Is Important Parts Of Many People
Since the internet came out and developed, online shopping has become important parts of many
people. With the rapid development of the Internet in the world, more and more people began to
start online shopping due to its convenience, time saving and benefits. For the definition, Online
shopping is an act of purchasing items or services on the Internet and has grown in popularity
over years. Narrowly speaking, it can be understood as searching online information and having
online deals. But broadly speaking, if one section of shopping is finished online, it will be regarded
as online shopping. What you need to learn is just to click your mouse and to wait instead of going
out by foot or driving. According to a recent survey, people in... Show more content on

Last year two of Alibaba s portals together handled 1.1 trillion yuan ($170 billion) in sales, more

firm to handle $1 trillion a year in transactions. ( The Economist Newspaper) Specially, $9.3
billion worth of orders were placed during the 24 hour Singles Day online shopping festival
hosted by Alibaba on Tuesday. (Shao) Why are people prefer shopping online to shopping in
store? Some reasons which need to prove will be offered in this essay. Online shopping is better
than in store one and will have more customers in the future because it has not only more choices
and styles , less time and cost for customers, but also more benefits to the firms. The reason why
online shopping is better among the customers is that people can find so many items in a single
website or shop, or find a kind of item in different online stores. If someone search what he wants,
he just needs to type the key words, hundreds, even thousands of items will come out in the
records. A large amount of dynamic information will support for customers s decision making to
make a comparison with the quality, style or sales volume of an item.

Gentrification Of The Downtown Corridors
Literature Review
Gentrification in the city:
Rauch (1993), Crihfield and Panggaben (1995), Glaser et al (1995), Simon (1998), Simon and
Nardinelli (2002) and Glaser and Saiz( 2004) address human capital as impacting the economic
performance of the area and is also identified as the main determinant of growth in metropolitan
areas. Crihfield and Panggabean (1995) include four points of production function: labor, private
physical capital, public infrastructure capital, and human capital. The researchers analyzed race,
amenities, growth, geography as well as public capital investment to ascertain the large impact
human capital has on the growth of the city, and in the case study of Atlanta, this growth impacts the
revitalization of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smith views gentrification as a negative thing, and a product of political economic shifts in local
and global markets (Smith pp.92) . He notes that this revanchist or French for Revenge city theme
aggressively re claims the city and tries to re infuse the city with middle class morals, standards
and costs. Gentrification also experiences a pattern of what many note as consumption in which
those with the sweat equity such as the LGBT community but some such as Rose (1984)
suggested that first wave gentrifiers were of small means, but were able to carve out spaces and
enclaves of sage space based on sweat equity Smith (1996) reintroduces the notion of the rent gap in
gentrification. Knopp (1987) mentions the increase in rents and the inability for pioneer gentrifiers
in the gay community to keep up with the increase in taxes and home prices.
Knopp (1990) analyzes the significance of gays in the gentrification process in New Orleans,
Louisiana. He finds that are three sets of events that present catalysts for neighborhood
transformation; the transformation included gay men, specifically white gay men who were active
in the community and also developers of the neighborhood. Knopp concluded that, ...the class
interests of those who treat land as a financial asset can be facilitated by forming cross cultural and
cross class alliances with gay communities ( p.337). Knopp (1990) also believed that the male
dominance of the community development helped to create a

Lacan once said, in an unpublished seminar, “the Oedipus...
Lacan once said, in an unpublished seminar, the Oedipus Complex is a dream of Freud (Felman,
1034). It is a questionable theory and a so called dream because Sigmund Freud developed the
Oedipus complex in such a way that allowed him to stand as an example of his own theory. It
begins with what Freud would call introspection ; the analysis of one s self. He developed terms to
use in his psychoanalysis; terms that divide the self and attempt to explain aspects of the human
personality. Adding to the questionability of the theory is the category of myth with which the
theory was named. The story of Oedipushappens to be one of the few Greek stories that do not fall
under the sinful and incestuous category. Alternatively, the Theogony

According to Freud, repression is what keeps us from realizing that men love their mothers and
want to kill their fathers. Reluctance is the proof that one had these desires because it is evidence
of embarrassment. Finally, the unconscious is where these desires reside until acted on, or until one
overcomes the desire and represses them further.
The Oedipal complex can be applied to many myths, but those that best represent the theory are
in the Theogony. A good beginning is to examine the birth of the twelve titans from Gaia, also
known as Mother Earth, who conceives them with Ouranos, Father Sky. Two of the titans,
Kronos and Rhea, behave in an Oedipal fashion. Kronos castrates his father Ouranos which
would not have been fulfilled without Gaia s help. This castration fulfills the patricidal aspect in
Freud s theory. Because Kronos was able to overcome his desire for his mother, he was
rewarded with the next best thing to Gaia, Rhea, his sister. Kronos and Rhea then gave birth to
the Olympians who all, but Zeus, get swallowed by Kronos. Zeus, also acting in an Oedipal
fashion overthrows his father Kronos, with help from his mother, Rhea. This demonstrates, yet
another example of overcoming the desire for one s mother and being rewarded with a very
similar mother figure. A cycle is established which reaches its end when Hera has a son,
Hephaestus, who is a lame god. Hera, unlike all the women

for brunch to be served. Once everyone arrived, she made an announcement that it was time to
eat. As we sat around the table Susan would say grace. In her prayer, she shared how thankful she
was for the food we were about to receive and how

Social Class Is An Ongoing Problem
Social class is an ongoing problem in education, especially for those living on the lower end of
the divide. More than one in five of Scotland s children are living in poverty. In this essay I will
consider why social class is an ongoing problem, its influence on wellbeing and achievement, and
propose ways in which we can attempt to combat these issues. This will be accomplished with
reference to concepts, theories and the scenarios detailed in appendix A, B and C.
According to Bourdieu s highly influential theory of cultural reproduction, children from middle
class families are more advantaged in gaining qualifications due to their possession of cultural
capital (Lamont Lareau, 2011). Cultural capital can be defined as a deeply ingrained knowledge of
society s high culture and taste, behaviours, linguistic cues and the education system. Cultural
reproduction refers to the transmission of these aforementioned cultural values and norms between
the generations. This can only be produced by family upbringing in the home (Bourdieu Passeron,
1990). This transition enormously influences children s success in school and later in life
(Sullivan, 2001). However the distribution of cultural capital is severely inefficient (Bourdieu and
Passeron, 1977). Sullivan (2001) applied Bourdieu s theory and found that the working class lack
the same cultural capital as the middle class. His research suggests that although working class
children can build this knowledge, they will never

Romeo And Juliet Potion Essay
Love has been a stabilizer and terrorizer for many families for as long as we can remember. In the
play Romeo and Juliet the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet, quickly fall in love. The two
do whatever they can to live happily ever after, together. Romeo and Juliet s deep love for each
other drives them to kill themselves, because they believe it is the only option they have left to be
together. The first time death becomes a thought is shortly after Tybalt s death. Romeo was the
guilty murderer of Tybalt, causing his banishment from Verona. This takes a large toll on Romeo
and Juliet s relationship. As she finds out about Romeo s banishment, Nurse says, Faith, here it is,

Diversity Reflection
The implications and understandings developed in class were a gateway in applying it to real
world work. Being given the opportunity to volunteer at The Continuum, I was able to understand
the meaning of disability in the lives of others. I saw firsthand how access, knowledge, and care
can transform a person s daily life in all aspects. With educative modules on assistive technology,
culture and care, family issues, and many others, I was able to transform my perspective and
practice what I am currently learning in the classroom. The Continuumprovides a ReGenerations
Adult Day Club for individuals who may deal with Alzheimer s disease, Dementia, Traumatic
Brain Injuries, Stroke Recovery, Parkinson s disease, and M.S. . This program is fundamental in
providing an array of different care, and I found it to be beneficial for more than just their
members. Through my 15 hours of volunteer experience with The Continuum, I analyzed how a
person s disability can be managed and addressed using a variety of techniques and methods, in
caring for individuals.
My first day volunteering had me nervous, but with an excited anticipation of being able to help
others, while learning. I immediately assessed the location for how they incorporated accessibility
in their framework, in regard to, the layout, doors, and general environment. It is interesting how
once you are aware of something, it easily becomes incorporated in simple daily life. I was given a

Assignment on Cognitive Dissonance
Theory Paper on Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence
that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is
extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the
core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn t fit in with the core
belief.
― Frantz Fanon, Black Skin, White Masks (1)

However, still he carries on with an unhealthy lifestyle of eating oily food, drinking excessive
alcohol and smoking with no exercise. This is where a dissonance arises in his thoughts and the
corresponding actions. Moreover, he also tends to avoid speaking on such issues with his family
or the doctor in order to continue the same way as he has been in order to reduce the dissonance
caused by such advices given to him.

Post decision dissonance reduction
This concept talks about how one would want to reduce the dissonance created in their mind
once a decision has already been taken. For example, lets say I purchase a piece of land
somewhere in an unknown place outside my home turf. Now, since I found the offer lucrative, I
did not research much on the cost to benefit analysis, the return on investment or the legal hassles
related to the illegal land grabbing in that area and this is creating a dissonance in my mind. In
order to reduce the dissonance I would speak to people residing in that area or those who know
about the business conditions prevailing in that area or some property experts in order to reassure
myself that I made the right decision. This process will in effect reduce the dissonance created after
the purchase.
Criticism: The setback which has been observed about this theory at times is that the theory uses a
very small set of sample size while proposing a factual observation. However, a better way of
ensuring the

Rebel Without A Cause Pop Culture
Midterm paper: Pop Culture: Sex, Drugs, Rock Roll. Rebel Without a Cause led way to the first
on screen teenage bad boy. James Dean plays a disgruntled teenager (Jim) is unsatisfied with life
and the patriarchy of following the rules. He hates that his dad lets his mom run the household
and caters to her versus the traditional father makes all the rules stance. Rebel Without a Cause
allows for a deep consideration of what the stereotypical 1950s teenager felt. The movie looks at
teenage relationships with the older generation and exclaims the disdain both parties share for
one another during the tremulous coming of age time. Jim s parents are not sure how to raise
him the best way, and he loses respect for them judging on how they interact with him and each
other. The other main teenage characters within the film are Judy portrayed by Natalie Wood,
and John Plato Crawford portrayed by Sal Mineo. Natalie Wood s character is probably
reminiscent of what many young female teenagers went through at the time. She deals with
gender issues and must find her way as a developing young woman when her parents seem
clueless to her concerns and struggles. Her father does not know how to guide her through this
next stage of life and instead turns her away which causes her to feel bad about herself. Her
Mother has no real clue on how to help either of them as well. Plato is also a striking character
within the story that is utterly confused and has no real guidance in life. All three

Essay On Federal Budget
The government needs to take more caution creating the federal budget. Edwards stated that
Consider Canada s experience. In the mid 1990s, the federal government faced a debt crisis
caused by overspending, which is similar to America s current situation. But the Canadian
government reversed course and slashed spending from 23 percent of GDP in 1993, to 17 percent
by 2000, to just 15 percent today. The Canadian economy did not sink into a recession from the
cuts as Keynesians would have expected but instead grew strongly during the 1990s and 2000s.

Growing spending and debt are undermining economic growth and may push the nation into a
financial crisis in coming years. Edward then stated that the solution to these problems is to
downsize every federal department by cutting the most harmful programs. This study proposes
specific cuts that would reduce federal spending by almost one quarter and balance the budget in
less than a decade.
In my opinion, I think he is right. If we reduce spending on Medicare, Medicaid, and social security
and look into the defense expenses and reduced some of the spendings in some of the programs
such as unnecessary equipment, submarines from the total spending of 4.4 trillion. These are the
programs that make up the largest percentage compared to the other programs such as education,
international aid, and foreign aid when the government cuts some of the programs mentioned
above, it will help balance the budget.

Cognitive Failures Of A Person s Cognitive System
A person s cognitive system can overall be very effective, though occasionally mistakes occur
resulting in generalized cognitive failures. Cognitive failures, also known as absent mindedness,
are errors or mistakes people make due to attention slips or memory failures (Reason, 1982). These
failures refer to all possible errors within the cognitive system and can be traced to problems with
attention, memory, errors created by distractions and errors in the execution of intentions. These
include lapses of attention, mind wandering, action failures, etc. Examples of cognitive failures
include daydreaming during an exam, forgetting the name of the person you just met a short time
before and forgetting where you placed your keys or your glasses. These are mistakes that most
people would agree they had experienced. How often these mistakes occur however is dependent

Cognitive failures are considered very important to researchers today in areas including cognitive

apparent that the reason for such interest is due to the frequency of failures depending on
individual differences, age and neuropsychological disorders and most importantly how these
errors have consequences in the individual s life. An example of a real life situation would be if a

Core Values In Public Administration
Core values are a wide expression to describe the principles by which we describe individual,
occupation, or business. Through the development of brainstorming and studying my professional
experience, I have established in a set of values that are very essential in public administration. In
order to succeed successfully at an organizational and personal level in the public administration,
these values must be trained on a daily basis.
To exercise transparency in public administration is to certify peoples the accessibility of data
which is thought public. This has to be a business objective, and is to be taken into explanation
when showing all public industries irrespective of one s job title. If the objective of a business is to
help the citizens to the greatest of their capability, then failing or avoiding achieving transparency
would affect major harm to the connection between them and the citizen they are aiming to help.
Accountability is to obey to a regular of professionalism in the workroom. Also, it means to
recognize that the professional events are being supported by the peoples of this nation. As such,
public workers are held accountable by peoples for keeping the operation of their business.
Accountability is an essential feature of the functionality of any business private or public.
Basically, it reminds people that while they are working by a professional business they will be
held accountable for their actions.
Each public administrator is requested to follow

John Stuart Mill s Utilitarianism
The perceived end goal for most human experiences is happiness. However, the objective
assessment of happiness creates challenges. Happiness is individual and personal, but the actions
that people take to achieve happiness effect everyone in society. In this essay, I will investigate the
standards for happiness utilizing John Stuart Mills Utilitarianism. Happiness is available to all
people at different levels, with clear objective standards at its most basic levels but with only
subjective standards at its higher levels. Although, people are able to obtain different levels of
happiness based upon their faculties according to Mill, all are able to contribute to the greater
good through their actions. Mill makes it clear early in his work that... Show more content on

Mill explains the higher and lower pleasures, comparing human happiness to that of pigs. He
states, Human beings have higher faculties than the animal appetites, and once they become
conscious of them they don t regard anything as happiness that doesn t include their gratification
(Mill, 5). This comparison is important, as it serves as a concrete example of more desirable
pleasures. Humans mental pleasures are also dependent on their respective faculties. The higher
the person s faculties, the higher more required for the person to be happy. This individual quality
of happiness is therefore subjective as the two people can achieve the same understood level of
happiness with significantly different mental cultivations. A person who cultivates their mind daily
and understands more about philosophy is happier, but a person with lower faculties is unable to
understand this level of happiness. These human pleasures of the mind are much more superior to
animalistic pleasures. Mill argues that once people are made aware of their possession of higher
faculties, they will not be happy when these are

What did you learn about the character or nature of God?
Zechariah: 1 5 the Lord will destroy the enemy of Israel. Those who are opposed to Israel are
always opposed to God. Israel is considered the church, so that means God is opposed to those
who are opposed to the church. God loves Israel the physical and spiritual Israel. God will always

History Of The ENIAC
The ENIAC ENIAC stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. It was introduced
on February 15, 1946 and was the very first digital and electronically run computer. It was created
in the United States at the University of Pennsylvania and its original purpose was to calculate
artillery firing tables during World War 2. The ENIAC weighed 30 tons and filled up an entire
extremely large room with its many parts. Its complexity was prominent, containing approximately
18,000 vacuum tubes, 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, thousands of switches, and 1,500 relays.
It produced calculations that, if done by hand, would have taken much longer to achieve. For
example in one second, the ENIAC could solve 5,000 additions. In 1946 John Mauchly

The Topic Of Sexuality
Introduce the topic of sexuality (para)
Horrocks (1997) points out in his book that sexuality encircles multiple aspects of human existence.
Sexuality is then, not a uniform or simple phenomenon and is influenced by the interaction of
psychological, biological, social, cultural factors and many more. Horrocks (1997), suggests that to
try and understand or explain a definitive conclusion about sexuality seems impossible as sexuality
has different meanings to so many groups of people.
Introduce the perspectives being used in essay (para)
There are a wide variety of models and perspectives relating to sexuality. Many perspectives on
sexuality use biology and physiology as the basis, which are then often perceived as being factual.

However this can commonly lead to confusion and lack of understanding of the terms. Diamond
(2002), states that, It can be said that one is a sex and one does gender; that sex typically, but not
always, represents what is between one s legs, whereas gender represents what is between one s
ears. p.232. The term sex refers to the biological makeup of that person. Sex role or sex typical
behaviour is then, usually the acting out of a person s biological predisposition. Whereas the term
gender is society s common perception of how females or males are expected to behave or act and
how they should be treated.
King (2009), points out that the nature of sexuality is dependent on how its accepted biological
basis is interpreted at a particular time by a particular society.
Recognition of a clear distinction between the two words is useful and valuable for the
psychological understanding of identity, particularly with relation to intersexuality and

The novel consists of Hannah Baker s audiotaped explanation of her suicide and Clay Jensen s
reactions. It moves back and forth between these two character s thoughts and actions. By using
first person point of view, Jay Asher was effectively able to add a level emotion which the reader
would never be able to get from a third person point of view. This is demonstrated when Hannah
says, I wish I would die. I ve thought those words many times. But it s a hard thing to say out
loud. It s even scarier to feel you might mean it (254). It is unbelievable to think that you re
inside the mind of a suicidal teen. Even though it is scary, it is the only way the reader is truly
able to understand Hannah Baker and the reasons why she killed herself. Furthermore, getting the
reactions of a person on the list, Clay Jensen, intrigues the reader as it is interesting to know what
time the person s name will pop up, what they did to cause Hannah s suicide and their thoughts on
everything they re hearing. For instance, when Clay is thinking to himself about Hannah, he says,
What if I got to know you and you turned out to be just like they said? What if you weren t the
person I hoped you were? That more than anything, would have hurt the most (207). With first
person point of view, the reader can understand Clay s thought process and have insight on what
the other twelve people are going through while listening to the tapes. Overall, it is very unique
that throughout the book, the reader is able to know the feelings and events of more than one
person in the book, while still having the novel be in first person point of

The palette bore the ruler of the northern kingdom bowing in submission to Narmer. On one hand,
Narmer held high the royal hat of his adversary while in the other he pressed him to the ground.
This was intended to connote a shift of power to Narmer, and the submission of the northern
kingdom to Narmer s government. This event distinctly marked the recognition of art in Egypt with
the palette being its most notable emblem. This palette, untill this day, is labelled Narmer s Palette.
Artists in the modern day have greatly drawn their inspiration from Egyptian culture. This culture
rested upon three foundations namely: Geography and climate, religion and the social system
(Moffett, Fazio, and Wodehouse 54). This is to say that they were the central themes from which
the Egyptian sculptors, artists and architects got their conceptual rubric for their impeccable

pottery, tombs, tools and temple walls. In addition, polished patterns derived from the elements of
nature adorned the temples on the ceilings as well as the walls. There were multi coloured,
accurately alligned geometric patterns repeated in fixed recurrence on the surfaces of tombs and
temples. Patterns of animals and plants also predominantly featured in the artwork of the Egyptians.

The Other Woman Analysis
I saw, The Other Woman, written by, David Ives, at the UCM Blackbox Theatre on November 3,
2017. Connor Bosworth directed the show, and did a great job. The story surrounds an author
who is met by his sleepwalking wife. She seems to be a completely different person, and when she
wakes up in the morning she doesn t remember a thing. He writes about his nights with her in his
story, and lies to his wife saying that nothing happened. She seems to know what is going on,
though she never admits it, and becomes depressed. Then a month passes without a sound, until we
re met by her sleeping alter ego once again. The husbandresponds as he normally does, trying
comfort her, then she reveals that she isn t actually sleep walking this time. They get in an
argument, but she starts going back and forth between her sleep walking persona and her awake
one until she ends up in the former, who asks to sleep with his as they had before his awake wife
got depressed, but this time he refuses to give in. Crap, this was supposed to be without spoilers,
my bad.
The reason I practically told the entire story in the last paragraph is because this was by far my
favorite of the one acts. After all, the first element on Aristotle s six elements is plot, and the plot of
this show genuinely intrigued me, which isn t an easy task. It had a balanced mix of mystery and
subtle clues as to what is happening, that I was constantly wondering, and trying to guess, as to
what was going to happen next.

The Importance Of Mentoring
Criminologist James Fox of Northeastern University predicts that murders committed by teens will
skyrocket as the population of kids 10 and under is higher than population of 21st century teens by
20%. (Stephens) Mentoring is the act of helping out someone that isn t as knowledgeable or
experienced in different areas. The goal is to make them leaders. (Patterson)
To be a good mentor you have to have great qualities like being helpful and being really good at
giving good constructive criticism. Whomever you re mentoring should receive information that is
both positive and negative. You want to makes sure you give pros and cons so that your mentee
can learn from them. (Patterson) Some social activities that you can do in mentoring programs
include talking about life experiences, having lunch together, and visiting the mentor s home for a
bonding experience. (Wexler) Although most mentoring programs usually have short durations
and are claimed to be a waste of money, they are beneficial to girls because they prevent peer
pressure, diseases, and pregnancies; encourage girls to be more mannerable, respectful, and
ladylike; and results in kids being more likely to graduate high school and attend college.
Mentoring is necessary to a healthy society because it prevents pregnancies, peer pressure,
diseases. Sixth graders are in a transitioning stage from elementary to middle schools. A lot of them

America is recognized as a place where if you work hard enough you can become wealthy. In
fact, the U.S. has more millionaires than any other country in the world. However, for all that
prosperity, the gap between rich and poor has always been large. People have been attempting to
fix this inequality for over a century now. Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant who became the
second richest man in America by dominating the steel industry, and Terence V. Powderly, an

would administer their riches beneficially and not in a way that encourages the slothful, the

the possibility of bettering their own lives. Through the common man s access to money,
Powderly believed that they could achieve not only better living conditions, but a happier
society in general, all while decreasing the ever growing gap between the rich and the poor

The current situation in Afghanistan contrasts the old one as black does white. Few women are

attending school after the age of eight (Stop). A journalist speaks of girls not being allowed to

The importance of stones being mentioned so much is the author is trying to keep the reader

the old times, someone persecuted of a crime or a non believer of a religion would be stoned to

make sense because the individual being stoned has not committed any wrongdoing to be

Protections and improvement of the environment, morally is a good thing as you help protect
the homes of the animals that live there. Similar to helping the sick, there is little to no ethical
dilemmas when it comes to being eco friendly. Since the SODIS method has some
environmentally based drawbacks, it could be harmful to the environment and it will present
some moral concern when it comes to recommending the technology. The SODIS method uses
plastic PET water bottles to help disinfect the water. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and also
referred to as polyester, is a common plastic used in plastic bottles for water, soft drinks, juice
and many other common items (American Chemistry Council, 1988). The production of
plastics, its frequent and disposable role and the hazards it poses once it needs to be disposed of
has made the use of plastic an environmental drawback to the SODIS method. PET can be reused
but only to a certain extent. PET bottles should be replaced within 6 to 12 months and should no
longer be used if they get scratched or show signs of wear (SODIS, 2009). When it comes to the
disposal of the bottle, there are two methods each with its own drawbacks. The first method,
landfills use up lots of space which could be better used. Also, due to the lack of oxygen found in
landfills, plastic can take more than 20 years to decompose. The other method is incineration
which creates harmful compounds such as carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases which easily can
get released into the atmosphere (Webb, Arnott, Crawford, Ivanova, 2012). However a study
conducted found that PET can undergo microbial degradation by Nocardia with help of the
esterase enzyme (Sharon Sharon, 2012). Although this is evidence of progress, currently there is

American Foreign Policy Since World War 2
Background to U.S Foreign Policy
In their book American Foreign Policy since World War 2, Steven W. Hook, and John Spanier
take a historical look at American foreign policy. Since its independence, all through to the start of
the 20th century, the United States had a policy of detachment. This was rooted in the believe that
Europe, the only other meaningful powerful in the world in the 18th and 19th century, had
intrinsic issues related to feudism that kept the continent in a constant state of war (Hook
Spanier, 2015). The U.S on its part was far away from Europe and had a unique chance to chart a
different course, one free from the troubles of Europe. As a democracy free from the class systems
of Europe and hence maintain peace and stability (Hook Spanier, 2015). To maintain this peace and
stability, it was in the United States interests to maintain detachment from Europe. In fact,
Monroe wrote that Europe and its flawed system was evil and America should strive as much as
possible to stay away from it (Hook Spanier, 2015). However, in the 20th century, this policy of
detachment was put to the test when the United States was drawn into the first and second world
wars by external factors. This led the United States to get more engaged in global affairs. The
idea behind engagement was to promote the ideals of democracy which, the U.S believed were
the pillars of peace, as well as to protect itself from aggressors like Japan in the Second World War.

Colonialism In Canada
Through the transfer of disease, oppression, and urbanization, colonization has had a massive effect
on the health of both colonists and indigenous peoples. Through a colonial perspective, health is
defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and a dynamic condition
resulting from a body s constant adjustment and adaption in response to stresses and changes in the
environment for maintaining an inner equilibrium called homeostasis (World HealthOrganization).
The concept of global health is born from the relationship between health and colonization, or the
policy or practice of acquiring full or partial control over another country, occupying it with settlers,
and exploiting it economically. Colonialismhas had... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the introduction of non native diseases and the facilitation of the spread of diseases amongst
to the cycles of poverty, disease, and poor mental health, colonization has had a huge negative
impact on the indigenous peoples in the area. The introduction of smallpox to the Americas from
rats that were stowed away on European ships caused a plague to erupt in the communities and
lead to the use of biological warfare against the Native Americans via smallpox blankets. In
addition to biological warfare, European colonists sent indigenous students to residential schools
which has caused historical trauma throughout generations of indigenous people in Canada.
Colonization has also caused cycles of poverty and disease which causes poor mental health due to
stress and a lack of emotional support from the community and helps facilitate the spread of HIV
/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases due to the fact that women will sell themselves to
sustain a livelihood. Colonization has had a negative impact on the health of communities around
the world and will continue to do so in the years to

Summary Of When David Gets A Concentration Camp
Why should you read this? In this book it shows how a young boy can do things that you wouldn
t think a boy could do. For example David escapes a concentration camp without any parents. He
is told by a man to go to a place called Denmark. David starts his journey. While David is on his
journey he realizes that he cannot do this on his own. So he turns to the God of the green pastures.
You may not realize it but as David goes on his journey his faith starts to grow. It is a great book for
children and even adults!
My favourite part: My favourite part in this book was when David gets himself painted by the
Danish lady Sophie Bang. When David s portrait is painted he is invited to her house for dinner.
There he learns that Demark is a free country. He also learns about a Woman there who had been in
a concentration camp but got ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

must leave the camp and head to Denmark. David listened to the man and escaped the
consecration camp. David ran as far away as he could from the camp. David would run at night
and sleep in the day. David stumbles on some soup and bread and decides to take some. David
hides in a delivery van and gets a ride. While David is in the van he thinks he hears his old friend
Johannes who died from a heart attack. David gets a ride on a boat. The man on the boat gave
David a life belt and threw him out the ship. David was in the water for several hours. When
David finally got to the shore he sees the beauty of the country and he cries. David then chooses

The Pros And Cons Of MPAA Rating
From the The Godfather to The Last Airbender, classic and forgettable movies alike all had to go
through the MPAA to receive the glory or infamy they are remembered for today. During Jack
Valenti s 38 year reign over the MPAA, he set the standards of how movies would be rated for
years to come. The MPAA s rating system has become outdated when compared to America s
constantly changing societal standards which has allowed filmmakers to push the boundaries with
their films while still getting the ratings they want.
The MPAA s movie rating system has been progressively allowing movies to teach children
immoral values and something must be done to fix this. The different topics on which the MPAA
base their ratings on have skewed standards. One ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a filmmaker wants to make a movie about the military, the military makes sure they are not
depicted in a bad light. They do so by making the filmmaker submit five copies of the script to the
pentagon. Then a military member oversees the filming process and when the final cut is ready, it
is reviewed by the military as a final inspection. (This Film is not Yet Rated). When a filmmaker
glorifies the military, they tend to donate military property for use in the film, i.e. tanks,
helicopters, and other vehicles (This Film is not Yet Rated). But, to properly depict the military
for what really happens in war, the MPAA may let a little extra violence slip through the cracks
while looking the other way. Since military movies need gun violence to create realism, they
often have the weapons effect built right into them. Brad Bushman, a doctor of social
psychology, says the weapons effect causes increased aggression in viewers when guns are
present (Bushman). Since the film is about the military and not civilians, the MPAA allows for
extra gun violence while giving the movie a less harsh rating. Gun violence in films leads to
increased aggression and it can plant malicious ideas into people s minds about how to use guns
for evil acts. This is why the MPAA should rate any gun violence in films much harsher than they
currently do. It is hard to convince the MPAA to change because they probably do not want to give
up the amount of power that they hold over

White House In The 1800s
White House The building of the white house has a rich history through out its war campaigns
and the burning of the white house. The White House is a symbol for our nation and it is a very
intricate piece to our society. The first stone was laid on October 13, 1792. It took eight years to
finish enough of the house to make it livable. The Capitol Building wasn t completed yet, and
congressmen lived in boardinghouses surrounded by farmland. John Adams, the second president
of the United States, moved into a cold, damp White House in November 1800.
In the 1800 s the white house had yet to be completed and yet John Adams moved in. When he
moved in November 1, 1800 he made several changes such as housekeeping on the second floor,

House has a greater meaning. The White House describes us as a nation. We might get knocked
down and pushed around but we will learn and fight for what we know is right. We will stand tall
and unite as one to remain as a stable and strong country.
Today the white house has changed vastly and made some new improvements from the 1800 s.
There are 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms, and 6 levels to accommodate all the people who live in,
work in, and visit the White House. There are also 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 7
staircases, and 3 elevators. The White House receives approximately 6,000 visitors a day. For
recreation, the White House has a variety of facilities available to its residents, including a tennis
court, a jogging track, swimming pool, Movie Theater, billiard room, and a bowling

Questions On Some Interviewing Tips
Some Interviewing Tips: 1. Identify yourself and make sure the person you are interviewing is
at ease and comfortable. 2. The respondent s reaction often mirrors that of the interviewer. The
respondent will know if you are not comfortable. Your pleasant, positive, well informed approach
will be reflected in the interviewees readiness to respond. 3. If you want more detailed responses
to your questions, reinforce those kinds of answers say, Yes, Okay, or I see, or nod. Do not use
the same reinforces for unresponsive answers, using same reinforces for unresponsive answers
gives the wrong signal. 4. To teach and motivate the respondent, use feedback expressions like
these: Thanks, this is the sort of information we re looking for in this research. it s important to
us to get this information. These details are helpful. It s useful to get your ideas (your opinion)
on this. I see; that s useful information. Let me get that down. 5. Often repeat the question or give
a pause maybe an expectant look or nod of the head, if possible repeat, summarize, or reflect the
feeling tone of the reply. Say: Anything else? How do you mean? Could you be more specific
about it? I m not sure I know what you mean by that (bewildered look). Could you tell me a little
more specific? However, u should not overuse these, or the respondent will think you cannot
recognize a valid answer. 6. Where examining recall, use probes that give memory cues of items

Satire In Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles
Satire walks a fine line between funny and not. If the audience does not understand the true
intentions of a satirical film then it is often seen as being offensive. Satire is designed to bring
attention to serious issues by making fun of them. Due to the nature of subjects often broached in
satirical films people often mistake them for supporting the very ideals they are trying to bring
attention to. This can be seen in Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles as the characters will often say very
offensive things and if one did not understand that it was all meant to be taken with a few grains of
salt then they would interpret the movie as being extremely offensive. Due to satires ability to bring
attention to the difficult issues in societies it is

Military Retirement Benefits For The Current Retirement...
POSITION PAPER
ON
MILITARY RETIREMENT BENEFITS
1. The following position paper will cover the future of military retirement benefits in the current
fiscally constrained environment. Specifically, the problem with the current fiscally unsustainable
retirement program and possible solutions to the aforementioned problem. This paper advocates
solutions including discussion on the current program, the newly implemented program, and
variations of those programs.
2. The current military retirement program draws a great deal of attention due mainly to its cost.
However, there are many factors that contribute to the overall disdain with the current retirement
program. Some of those factors being cost, equality, civilian comparability. In... Show more content

For example, ...other public and private sector retirement plans typically do not begin providing an
annuity until age 55, 60, or 65... The next problem with the current retirement plan is that it is an all
or nothing system. Either a military member serves 20 years and qualifies for benefits or they do
not. This is vastly different from many civilian programs currently offered and something that the
Department of Defense (DOD) has attempted to remedy with the newly implemented program.
Many civilian based retirement programs offer vesting programs that enable employees to secure
retirement benefits after a certain number of years, usually anywhere from five to 15 years. Another
issue with the current military retirement plan is its comparability to the private sector. As stated by
FAS, ...private sector employers who have reduced or eliminated their reliance on defined benefit
programs and have focused almost exclusively on 401(K) type programs... Additionally, many
private sector companies offer contribution matching up to a certain percentage, assisting
employees in saving for retirement. This is not offered in the current military retirement plan.
Having discussed the current retirement program the next topic will be the newly implemented
retirement program.
3. A possible solution to the current retirement program is a recently authorized plan. In fiscal year
(FY) 2016 a new military retirement plan was introduced

What Makes An Elite Athlete Become Highly Competent And...
Ever since the creation of the ancient Olympic Games, held in Olympia, Greece, in the 8th century
BC, there has been athletic competition between different nations, groups, tribes, and individuals.
Today, elite athletes participate in a wide variety of athletic pursuits, competing in differing events
throughout the world. What makes an elite athlete become highly competent and possess a higher
level of performance than other individuals? This is the essential question that has driven multiple
specialists to explore individual s athletic ability thru a look into the genetic disposition of those
individuals. For while training, exercising, planning, nutrition, motivation, patience, etc. all have an

The first real evidence of genetics role upon athletic performance came with the publication of the
human genome project. Once the human genome had been completely mapped out this allowed
researchers to finally have a starting point to locate and identify individual genes that could be
then attributed to an individual s success as an athlete. The Human Gene Map for Performance
and Health Related Fitness Phenotypes: The 2006 2007 Update, published and updated by Molly
S. Bray, James M. Hagberg, Louis Perusse, Tuomo Rankinen, Stephen M. Roth, Bernd Wolfarth,
and Claude Bouchard was an update of the human gene map for physical performance and health
related fitness phenotypes that covers the research advances that were reported during the years of
2006 and 2007. The genes and markers with evidence of association or linkage with a performance
or a fitness phenotype in sedentary or active people, in responses to acute exercise, or for training
induced adaptations are positioned on the map of all autosomes and sex chromosomes. The
individuals for these studies came from a wide background in order to have a better study for
results on a broad spectrum. This fitness and performance map currently includes two hundred and
fourteen autosomal gene entries and quantitative trait loci plus seven others on the X chromosome,
along with eighteen mitochondrial genes that have been shown to influence fitness and

Transitioning From High School At College Is Always A...
Transitioning from high school to college is always a struggle for any young adult. The idea of
picking your own classes, living on campus, and separating from lifelong friends is extremely
overwhelming to process. However, when transitioning to college you are now back in the
underclassmen category and must work your way back up the status ladder. College opens up a
new world that individuals must explore in order to make the best of their first year. But no
matter what college we attend, our freshman year of college will always have a strong impact on
our lives. Over the years as music, technology, television shows, and trends become different, our
experiences and memories of freshman year will never change. So when interviewing my Great
Aunt Arlene Dudie about her freshman year of college, I visualized her journey and what her
experience was like attending IllinoisState Universitybeginning in June of 1977.
Speaking with her about her life as a college student back in 1977 allowed me to share another
amazing moment with her that I will never forget. My great aunt is an expressive, sociable,
intelligent, and versatile woman. I am honored to be writing about such an awesome individual
such as my aunt. When I asked my aunt what she enjoyed most about Illinois State, she replied
ISU was (and still is) a great university. Coming from a small town, I enjoyed meeting more
African American students from different areas of Illinois. I definitely shared the same feeling as

  • 2. Descriptive Essay About Christmas Ever since I was younger, decorating our Christmas tree has always been a big deal in my family. We decorate just about two weeks before Christmas, always on a Sunday night after our family dinner. This night has always been special to me, in fact it is probably one of my favorite parts of the Christmas season. My grandparents who are local come over, we turn on Christmas music, and the fireplace. We have Christmas cookies with hot chocolate and just make a night of it. The last part of the night, but arguably the most important, is when my Dad places our glass angel atop the tree. It signifies, to me at least, the reason we celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. However, lately, I ve noticed a recent trend that confuses me. In the past couple years I ve noticed that people, even those in my own extended family, use items either from popular culture, or just random things they find important, as their tree toppers. My Uncle Mike and Aunt Kelly use a Phillies baseball hat, my Aunt Maureen and Uncle Steve use a personalized set of Mickey Mouse ears from their honeymoon, my friend Nicoletta and her family simply use a plain, old santa hat. I grew up to believe and see Christmas as a religious holiday, we go to mass on Christmas Eve and on Christmas day, it s just a part of our tradition. Growing up, I just assumed everyone else held these ideas and traditions as well. So to see people so close to me change something I thought was so sacred and something everyone else ... • 3. Gattac A Futuristic And Dystopian Society Dystopia is defined as a futuristic, imaginary universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral or totalitarian control. Dystopias, though an exaggerated worst case scenario, making a critical and current trend, societal norm, or political system. The films I have chosen to analyze Snowpiercer directed by Joon Ho Bong, Gattacadirected by Andrew Niccol both are movies that show this genre of a futuristic and dystopian society. Snowpiercer and Gattaca show conventions that convey this genre through a dystopian protagonist who standing up against a higher power, restrictions upon freedom and inequality(discrimination) in Gattaca the protagonist Vincent stands up to the labels of valids and invalids and the discrimination between the two labels in order to achieve his dreams, even though he commits identity fraud. Whereas others conforms to; their DNAas a way to live their lives. In Snowpiercer The movie takes place aboard the globe spanning Snowpiercer train which holds the last remnants of humanity after an attempt at climate engineering in order to stop global warming has unintentionally created a new ice age. Curtis Everett a member of the lower class passengers who have been place in the tail section, leads a revolution against the elites in the front of the train in order to get control. • 4. The Murder Of Jack The Ripper Police and Crime Investigators are still asking questions about the notorious murderer Jack the Ripper. His victims, letters, and the wild investigation all lead up to a mystery that may never be solved. Who was Jack the Ripper? April 3rd, 1888, in the East End of London near the Whitechapel District, the first of five of the most famous unsolved murder cases in history occurred. Emma Smith, a local prostitute, was maliciously attacked by a gang at the Wentworth Street Junction on Osborn Street. The gang robbed her of all her money and beat her senseless. They even forced a blunt object into her genitalia. Smith survived her initial attack and managed to struggle back to her home on George Street where several of her neighbors became aware... On September 8, 1888, a bit before six in the morning, John Davis, an elderly man who resided at 29 Hanbury Street, was walking downstairs through the dark passageway that would lead him outside when he witnessed a sight that would render him horrified. He then saw two men walking through the same passageway, so he called them over. They followed John Davis into the backyard of the building where they all witnessed the mutilated body of Annie Chapman lying between the steps of the building and a wooden fence. Her head was turned toward the house and her clothes had been hoisted above her waist just like the other victims. Her hands were covered in blood, and her throat had been slashed. The three men go off to search for a police, and eventually Inspector Chandler arrives. He calls for medical help and a man named Dr. Bagster Phillips comes to the scene. He left a testimony that stated, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Organic Dyes Lab Report The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize two organic dyes then observe their effective dye strength on various synthetic and natural materials. This was achieved by means of chemical reactions outlined below, heat to increase the reaction rate, ice baths to precipitate out the product, vacuum filtration to isolate the product, washing with water and 95% ethanol to purify the product, and dying of the clothe to observe dye effectiveness. The test of the effectiveness of the dye required that the fabric absorb one wavelength and then reflect the opposing color, and then be able to keep the color through basic washing. ( The Economist Newspaper) Specially, $9.3 billion worth of orders were placed during the 24 hour Singles Day online shopping festival hosted by Alibaba on Tuesday. (Shao) Why are people prefer shopping online to shopping in store? Some reasons which need to prove will be offered in this essay. Online shopping is better than in store one and will have more customers in the future because it has not only more choices and styles , less time and cost for customers, but also more benefits to the firms. The reason why online shopping is better among the customers is that people can find so many items in a single website or shop, or find a kind of item in different online stores. If someone search what he wants, he just needs to type the key words, hundreds, even thousands of items will come out in the records. A large amount of dynamic information will support for customers s decision making to make a comparison with the quality, style or sales volume of an item. Gentrification Of The Downtown Corridors Literature Review Gentrification in the city: Rauch (1993), Crihfield and Panggaben (1995), Glaser et al (1995), Simon (1998), Simon and Nardinelli (2002) and Glaser and Saiz( 2004) address human capital as impacting the economic performance of the area and is also identified as the main determinant of growth in metropolitan areas. Crihfield and Panggabean (1995) include four points of production function: labor, private physical capital, public infrastructure capital, and human capital. The researchers analyzed race, amenities, growth, geography as well as public capital investment to ascertain the large impact human capital has on the growth of the city, and in the case study of Atlanta, this growth impacts the revitalization of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smith views gentrification as a negative thing, and a product of political economic shifts in local and global markets (Smith pp.92) . He notes that this revanchist or French for Revenge city theme aggressively re claims the city and tries to re infuse the city with middle class morals, standards and costs. Gentrification also experiences a pattern of what many note as consumption in which those with the sweat equity such as the LGBT community but some such as Rose (1984) suggested that first wave gentrifiers were of small means, but were able to carve out spaces and enclaves of sage space based on sweat equity Smith (1996) reintroduces the notion of the rent gap in gentrification. Knopp (1987) mentions the increase in rents and the inability for pioneer gentrifiers in the gay community to keep up with the increase in taxes and home prices. Knopp (1990) analyzes the significance of gays in the gentrification process in New Orleans, Louisiana. He finds that are three sets of events that present catalysts for neighborhood transformation; the transformation included gay men, specifically white gay men who were active in the community and also developers of the neighborhood. Knopp concluded that, ...the class interests of those who treat land as a financial asset can be facilitated by forming cross cultural and cross class alliances with gay communities ( p.337). • 8. Lacan once said, in an unpublished seminar, “the Oedipus... Lacan once said, in an unpublished seminar, the Oedipus Complex is a dream of Freud (Felman, 1034). It is a questionable theory and a so called dream because Sigmund Freud developed the Oedipus complex in such a way that allowed him to stand as an example of his own theory. It begins with what Freud would call introspection ; the analysis of one s self. He developed terms to use in his psychoanalysis; terms that divide the self and attempt to explain aspects of the human personality. Adding to the questionability of the theory is the category of myth with which the theory was named. The story of Oedipushappens to be one of the few Greek stories that do not fall under the sinful and incestuous category. Alternatively, the Theogony ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Freud, repression is what keeps us from realizing that men love their mothers and want to kill their fathers. Reluctance is the proof that one had these desires because it is evidence of embarrassment. Finally, the unconscious is where these desires reside until acted on, or until one overcomes the desire and represses them further. The Oedipal complex can be applied to many myths, but those that best represent the theory are in the Theogony. A good beginning is to examine the birth of the twelve titans from Gaia, also known as Mother Earth, who conceives them with Ouranos, Father Sky. Two of the titans, Kronos and Rhea, behave in an Oedipal fashion. Kronos castrates his father Ouranos which would not have been fulfilled without Gaia s help. This castration fulfills the patricidal aspect in Freud s theory. Because Kronos was able to overcome his desire for his mother, he was rewarded with the next best thing to Gaia, Rhea, his sister. Kronos and Rhea then gave birth to the Olympians who all, but Zeus, get swallowed by Kronos. Zeus, also acting in an Oedipal fashion overthrows his father Kronos, with help from his mother, Rhea. This demonstrates, yet another example of overcoming the desire for one s mother and being rewarded with a very similar mother figure. A cycle is established which reaches its end when Hera has a son, Hephaestus, who is a lame god. Hera, unlike all the women ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Social Class Is An Ongoing Problem Social class is an ongoing problem in education, especially for those living on the lower end of the divide. More than one in five of Scotland s children are living in poverty. In this essay I will consider why social class is an ongoing problem, its influence on wellbeing and achievement, and propose ways in which we can attempt to combat these issues. This will be accomplished with reference to concepts, theories and the scenarios detailed in appendix A, B and C. According to Bourdieu s highly influential theory of cultural reproduction, children from middle class families are more advantaged in gaining qualifications due to their possession of cultural capital (Lamont Lareau, 2011). Cultural capital can be defined as a deeply ingrained knowledge of society s high culture and taste, behaviours, linguistic cues and the education system. Cultural reproduction refers to the transmission of these aforementioned cultural values and norms between the generations. This can only be produced by family upbringing in the home (Bourdieu Passeron, 1990). This transition enormously influences children s success in school and later in life (Sullivan, 2001). However the distribution of cultural capital is severely inefficient (Bourdieu and Passeron, 1977). Sullivan (2001) applied Bourdieu s theory and found that the working class lack the same cultural capital as the middle class. His research suggests that although working class children can build this knowledge, they will never ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Romeo and Juliet s deep love for each other drives them to kill themselves, because they believe it is the only option they have left to be together. The first time death becomes a thought is shortly after Tybalt s death. Romeo was the guilty murderer of Tybalt, causing his banishment from Verona. • 13. Diversity Reflection The implications and understandings developed in class were a gateway in applying it to real world work. Being given the opportunity to volunteer at The Continuum, I was able to understand the meaning of disability in the lives of others. I saw firsthand how access, knowledge, and care can transform a person s daily life in all aspects. With educative modules on assistive technology, culture and care, family issues, and many others, I was able to transform my perspective and practice what I am currently learning in the classroom. The Continuumprovides a ReGenerations Adult Day Club for individuals who may deal with Alzheimer s disease, Dementia, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Stroke Recovery, Parkinson s disease, and M.S. . This program is fundamental in providing an array of different care, and I found it to be beneficial for more than just their members. Through my 15 hours of volunteer experience with The Continuum, I analyzed how a person s disability can be managed and addressed using a variety of techniques and methods, in caring for individuals. My first day volunteering had me nervous, but with an excited anticipation of being able to help others, while learning. I immediately assessed the location for how they incorporated accessibility in their framework, in regard to, the layout, doors, and general environment. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn t fit in with the core belief. ― Frantz Fanon, Black Skin, White Masks (1) The quote cited above very well explains one of the most important and yet so practical theory in Communication studies. However, still he carries on with an unhealthy lifestyle of eating oily food, drinking excessive alcohol and smoking with no exercise. This is where a dissonance arises in his thoughts and the corresponding actions. Moreover, he also tends to avoid speaking on such issues with his family or the doctor in order to continue the same way as he has been in order to reduce the dissonance caused by such advices given to him. [pic] Post decision dissonance reduction This concept talks about how one would want to reduce the dissonance created in their mind once a decision has already been taken. For example, lets say I purchase a piece of land somewhere in an unknown place outside my home turf. Now, since I found the offer lucrative, I did not research much on the cost to benefit analysis, the return on investment or the legal hassles related to the illegal land grabbing in that area and this is creating a dissonance in my mind. In order to reduce the dissonance I would speak to people residing in that area or those who know about the business conditions prevailing in that area or some property experts in order to reassure myself that I made the right decision. This process will in effect reduce the dissonance created after the purchase. Criticism: The setback which has been observed about this theory at times is that the theory uses a very small set of sample size while proposing a factual observation. However, a better way of ensuring the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Rebel Without A Cause Pop Culture Midterm paper: Pop Culture: Sex, Drugs, Rock Roll. Rebel Without a Cause led way to the first on screen teenage bad boy. James Dean plays a disgruntled teenager (Jim) is unsatisfied with life and the patriarchy of following the rules. He hates that his dad lets his mom run the household and caters to her versus the traditional father makes all the rules stance. Rebel Without a Cause allows for a deep consideration of what the stereotypical 1950s teenager felt. The movie looks at teenage relationships with the older generation and exclaims the disdain both parties share for one another during the tremulous coming of age time. Jim s parents are not sure how to raise him the best way, and he loses respect for them judging on how they interact with him and each other. The other main teenage characters within the film are Judy portrayed by Natalie Wood, and John Plato Crawford portrayed by Sal Mineo. Natalie Wood s character is probably reminiscent of what many young female teenagers went through at the time. She deals with gender issues and must find her way as a developing young woman when her parents seem clueless to her concerns and struggles. Her father does not know how to guide her through this next stage of life and instead turns her away which causes her to feel bad about herself. Her Mother has no real clue on how to help either of them as well. Plato is also a striking character within the story that is utterly confused and has no real guidance in life. All three ... • 19. Essay On Federal Budget The government needs to take more caution creating the federal budget. Edwards stated that Consider Canada s experience. In the mid 1990s, the federal government faced a debt crisis caused by overspending, which is similar to America s current situation. But the Canadian government reversed course and slashed spending from 23 percent of GDP in 1993, to 17 percent by 2000, to just 15 percent today. The Canadian economy did not sink into a recession from the cuts as Keynesians would have expected but instead grew strongly during the 1990s and 2000s. Since the early 1950 s Americans have had trouble controlling overspending. The United States government has engaged in deficit spending. This occurs when spending exceeds the amount of income ... Edward then stated that the solution to these problems is to downsize every federal department by cutting the most harmful programs. This study proposes specific cuts that would reduce federal spending by almost one quarter and balance the budget in less than a decade. In my opinion, I think he is right. Cognitive failures, also known as absent mindedness, are errors or mistakes people make due to attention slips or memory failures (Reason, 1982). These failures refer to all possible errors within the cognitive system and can be traced to problems with attention, memory, errors created by distractions and errors in the execution of intentions. These include lapses of attention, mind wandering, action failures, etc. Examples of cognitive failures include daydreaming during an exam, forgetting the name of the person you just met a short time before and forgetting where you placed your keys or your glasses. These are mistakes that most people would agree they had experienced. How often these mistakes occur however is dependent on the person. When I kept track of my own personal memory lapses, I found that I often make mistakes on a daily basis. Cognitive failures are considered very important to researchers today in areas including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, educational psychology and neuropsychology. It is apparent that the reason for such interest is due to the frequency of failures depending on individual differences, age and neuropsychological disorders and most importantly how these errors have consequences in the individual s life. Through the development of brainstorming and studying my professional experience, I have established in a set of values that are very essential in public administration. Happiness is individual and personal, but the actions that people take to achieve happiness effect everyone in society. In this essay, I will investigate the standards for happiness utilizing John Stuart Mills Utilitarianism. Happiness is available to all people at different levels, with clear objective standards at its most basic levels but with only subjective standards at its higher levels. Although, people are able to obtain different levels of happiness based upon their faculties according to Mill, all are able to contribute to the greater good through their actions. He states, Human beings have higher faculties than the animal appetites, and once they become conscious of them they don t regard anything as happiness that doesn t include their gratification (Mill, 5). This comparison is important, as it serves as a concrete example of more desirable pleasures. Humans mental pleasures are also dependent on their respective faculties. The higher the person s faculties, the higher more required for the person to be happy. This individual quality of happiness is therefore subjective as the two people can achieve the same understood level of happiness with significantly different mental cultivations. A person who cultivates their mind daily and understands more about philosophy is happier, but a person with lower faculties is unable to understand this level of happiness. These human pleasures of the mind are much more superior to animalistic pleasures. This is demonstrated when Hannah says, I wish I would die. I ve thought those words many times. But it s a hard thing to say out loud. It s even scarier to feel you might mean it (254). It is unbelievable to think that you re inside the mind of a suicidal teen. Even though it is scary, it is the only way the reader is truly able to understand Hannah Baker and the reasons why she killed herself. Furthermore, getting the reactions of a person on the list, Clay Jensen, intrigues the reader as it is interesting to know what time the person s name will pop up, what they did to cause Hannah s suicide and their thoughts on everything they re hearing. For instance, when Clay is thinking to himself about Hannah, he says, What if I got to know you and you turned out to be just like they said? What if you weren t the person I hoped you were? That more than anything, would have hurt the most (207). With first person point of view, the reader can understand Clay s thought process and have insight on what the other twelve people are going through while listening to the tapes. The story surrounds an author who is met by his sleepwalking wife. She seems to be a completely different person, and when she wakes up in the morning she doesn t remember a thing. He writes about his nights with her in his story, and lies to his wife saying that nothing happened. She seems to know what is going on, though she never admits it, and becomes depressed. The SODIS method uses plastic PET water bottles to help disinfect the water. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and also referred to as polyester, is a common plastic used in plastic bottles for water, soft drinks, juice and many other common items (American Chemistry Council, 1988). The production of plastics, its frequent and disposable role and the hazards it poses once it needs to be disposed of has made the use of plastic an environmental drawback to the SODIS method. PET can be reused but only to a certain extent. PET bottles should be replaced within 6 to 12 months and should no longer be used if they get scratched or show signs of wear (SODIS, 2009). When it comes to the disposal of the bottle, there are two methods each with its own drawbacks. The first method, landfills use up lots of space which could be better used. Also, due to the lack of oxygen found in landfills, plastic can take more than 20 years to decompose. The other method is incineration which creates harmful compounds such as carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases which easily can get released into the atmosphere (Webb, Arnott, Crawford, Ivanova, 2012). However a study conducted found that PET can undergo microbial degradation by Nocardia with help of the esterase enzyme (Sharon Sharon, 2012). Although this is evidence of progress, currently there is no commercial scale method capable of the biodegradation of PET (Webb, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Ebola Virus In A Walk In The Woods And The Hot Zone Bill Bryson claims in A Walk in The Woods that he discovered an America that millions of people scarcely know exists (274). In the autobiographical nonfiction novel, Bryson captures his expedition in the wilderness alongside his companion, Katz, who faced drastic differences between their ordinary daily lives versus the wildernessa place where nothing was taken for granted. Similarly, Richard Preston wrote about the terrifying origins and effects of Ebola in The Hot Zone and included similar viruses that caused chaos in ordinary lives of human beings. Both A Walk in The Woods and The Hot Zone incorporate the theme of exploration by using description and narration to enhance the story lines. Description played an effective role in delivering and enhancing the insight of both books by explaining the journey with various hardships in A Walk in The Woods and analyzing the mysterious origins and effects of the Ebola virus. • 41. American Foreign Policy Since World War 2 Background to U.S Foreign Policy In their book American Foreign Policy since World War 2, Steven W. Hook, and John Spanier take a historical look at American foreign policy. Since its independence, all through to the start of the 20th century, the United States had a policy of detachment. This was rooted in the believe that Europe, the only other meaningful powerful in the world in the 18th and 19th century, had intrinsic issues related to feudism that kept the continent in a constant state of war (Hook Spanier, 2015). The U.S on its part was far away from Europe and had a unique chance to chart a different course, one free from the troubles of Europe. As a democracy free from the class systems of Europe and hence maintain peace and stability (Hook Spanier, 2015). To maintain this peace and stability, it was in the United States interests to maintain detachment from Europe. In fact, Monroe wrote that Europe and its flawed system was evil and America should strive as much as possible to stay away from it (Hook Spanier, 2015). However, in the 20th century, this policy of detachment was put to the test when the United States was drawn into the first and second world wars by external factors. This led the United States to get more engaged in global affairs. The idea behind engagement was to promote the ideals of democracy which, the U.S believed were the pillars of peace, as well as to protect itself from aggressors like Japan in the Second World War. Through a colonial perspective, health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and a dynamic condition resulting from a body s constant adjustment and adaption in response to stresses and changes in the environment for maintaining an inner equilibrium called homeostasis (World HealthOrganization). • 45. The Pros And Cons Of MPAA Rating From the The Godfather to The Last Airbender, classic and forgettable movies alike all had to go through the MPAA to receive the glory or infamy they are remembered for today. During Jack Valenti s 38 year reign over the MPAA, he set the standards of how movies would be rated for years to come. The MPAA s rating system has become outdated when compared to America s constantly changing societal standards which has allowed filmmakers to push the boundaries with their films while still getting the ratings they want. The MPAA s movie rating system has been progressively allowing movies to teach children immoral values and something must be done to fix this. The different topics on which the MPAA base their ratings on have skewed standards. One ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a filmmaker wants to make a movie about the military, the military makes sure they are not depicted in a bad light. They do so by making the filmmaker submit five copies of the script to the pentagon. Then a military member oversees the filming process and when the final cut is ready, it is reviewed by the military as a final inspection. (This Film is not Yet Rated). When a filmmaker glorifies the military, they tend to donate military property for use in the film, i.e. tanks, helicopters, and other vehicles (This Film is not Yet Rated). But, to properly depict the military for what really happens in war, the MPAA may let a little extra violence slip through the cracks while looking the other way. Since military movies need gun violence to create realism, they often have the weapons effect built right into them. Brad Bushman, a doctor of social psychology, says the weapons effect causes increased aggression in viewers when guns are present (Bushman). Since the film is about the military and not civilians, the MPAA allows for extra gun violence while giving the movie a less harsh rating. Gun violence in films leads to increased aggression and it can plant malicious ideas into people s minds about how to use guns for evil acts. This is why the MPAA should rate any gun violence in films much harsher than they currently do. It is hard to convince the MPAA to change because they probably do not want to give up the amount of power that they hold over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
