Adaptive Computing Using PlateSpin OrchestrateNovell
Adaptive computing goes beyond just intelligently utilizing available resources; it encompasses quality of service (QoS) targets, fault tolerance (high availability), monitoring, and iterative analysis of the resulting dataset to determine what corrective measures (adaptations) should occur at any given moment. As virtualization becomes widespread in the data center, the need for automating the placement and configuration of workloads (virtual machines) using an adaptive computing model becomes vitally important. This session demonstrates how to use events, introduced in PlateSpin Orchestrate 2.0.2, to create rules that trigger workload provisioning, migration, and other virtual machine lifecycle operations. It will also offer a preview of new functionality included in the upcoming 2.1 release of the product.

VIOS provides I/O virtualization on Power Systems by enabling virtual adapters. This allows IBM i partitions to access storage through the VIOS. There are two main methods: 1) VSCSI, where storage is assigned to the VIOS which then maps it to IBM i clients, and 2) NPIV, where the hypervisor assigns unique WWPNs to virtual fiber channels connecting the VIOS to storage arrays. NPIV requires an NPIV-capable switch and has limitations such as a maximum of 64 active client connections per physical port.
Extracts from AS/400 Concepts & Tools workshopRamesh Joshi
This document provides an overview of topics to be covered in a two-day AS/400 concepts and tools training course. Day 1 introduces AS/400 concepts and covers programming tools like PDM, SDA, and SEU. Day 2 focuses on programming languages like CL and RPG and debugging tools. The objective is to give participants a sense of what a full training course would entail to prepare them to become AS/400 developers. Several examples are provided to illustrate programming concepts and tools.
AS/400 Concepts and Tools -- What you will learnRamesh Joshi
This one-day workshop on AS/400 concepts and tools aims to give participants an overview of what a full course on becoming an AS/400 developer would entail. The workshop plan is to have participants open a free AS/400 account, develop a simple "Hello World" program, and work on a nano project. Participants will learn about key AS/400 concepts like libraries, objects, files, tables and the programming development tools for designing screens, menus, and writing code. The workshop also covers debugging, SQL, emulation software, and next steps for participants.
When doing an upgrade to IBM i, it’s more work to plan the upgrade than to make the upgrade itself. Once you have a plan, the actual upgrade is simple. Do you know what you need to upgrade to IBM i 7.2?
Pete Massiello, president of COMMON and iTech Solutions, has helped many IBM i users make the move. He joins Tom Huntington to share 50 years of combined experience with IBM i. They’ll get you on the right path to an upgrade by helping you answer key questions like these:
• What is the right size for the load source?
• How do I increase the licensed internal code?
• Which version of Java is compatible with the new release?
• Which console options are no longer available with 7.2?
• Do I have the correct set of disks for the upgrade?
• What do I need to do differently when upgrading from 5.4, 6.1, or 7.1?

This document provides a summary of an IBM Power Systems product update presentation. It discusses how organizations struggle with challenges around understanding data, keeping pace with innovation, and accelerating time-to-market. It then provides examples of how IBM Power Systems and hybrid cloud solutions can help organizations overcome these challenges by enabling insights from large amounts of data, superior performance, and faster delivery of products and services. The document also includes information about the Power8 architecture and its performance advantages over Intel systems.
The document provides a technical introduction to the IBM AS/400 system. It discusses the history and evolution of the AS/400 from its origins in the System/38. Key aspects of the AS/400 architecture are its technology independence, object-based design, integration of hardware and software, single-level store, and support for work management and programming. The document also explores the AS/400 command interface, file system, users, and startup process. It briefly discusses other environments like Unix, hypervisor, and Windows that can run on AS/400 hardware.
Virtualization technologies allow servers to be consolidated onto fewer physical servers for improved efficiency. IBM's PowerVM allows one physical server to be divided into multiple logical partitions (LPARs), with each LPAR able to run its own operating system. Key PowerVM technologies include micro-partitioning which divides physical CPUs among LPARs, dynamic LPARs which moves resources between active partitions, and virtual I/O servers which allow partitions to share physical network and storage adapters. These technologies improve utilization, flexibility, and availability compared to using separate physical servers.
Understanding software licensing with IBM Power Systems PowerVM virtualizationJay Kruemcke
One of the key benefits of combining workloads in a virtualized environment is the ability to pay for less than the full capacity of the machine. Unfortunately there are many misconceptions about how software licensing really works in these environments.
The IBM Power Systems PowerVM virtualization technology offers a great deal of flexibility, but that flexibility also results in complexity when determining software license requirements. This presentation covers important licensing considerations for the IBM Power Systems environment.
The document provides an overview of the history and technical details of the IBM AS/400 midrange computer system, later renamed IBM i. It discusses the origins of the system in IBM's Rochester, Minnesota facilities in the late 1980s. The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
