  1. The Environmental Policy Statement is implemented through our Environmental Management System (EMS), which is an integrated part of our Global Ship Management System (GSMS). The overall purpose of the EMS is to ensure a systematic approach to environmental improvements and compliance, which is achieved through the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) cycle (see figure below). As part of the management system, we set objectives and targets for environmental improvements on a continuous basis, and we implement best available technology/best environmental practice where technically and economically feasible. We also conduct training to improve environmental awareness and we improve operational procedures to ensure our targets are met.
  2. Maersk Line, the world’s biggest shipping company, has managed to reduce its CO2 emission per container by 15% from 2002 to 2008 through a broad array of innovation projects.
  3. • We will continue to pursue efficiency to the benefit of both our business and the environment. • We have created an environment for energy innovation and are currently running up to 100 innovation research projects through Maersk Maritime Technology. The aim is to reduce CO2 emission and save energy. Among many other things we are: o Testing new kinds of ship paints o Developing more efficient propellers o Experimenting with new techniques to reduce friction between water and ships
