Aadil Ali Wani presented on green chemistry principles at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Kashmir. Green chemistry aims to reduce waste and pollution by designing chemical syntheses. For example, the traditional production of allyl alcohol uses alkaline hydrolysis of allyl chloride, generating hydrochloric acid as a byproduct. A greener route avoids chlorine by using a two-step process with propylene, acetic acid, and oxygen, allowing the acetic acid produced to be recovered and reused. The presentation covered principles such as atom economy to maximize the use of starting materials and minimize waste.
