3. What is green chemistry?
“Environmental pollution is an incurable disease
it can only be prevented”- Barry Commoner
• Definition:- Green Chemistry also known
as sustainable chemistry is the design of
chemical products and processes that reduce
or eliminate the use and generation of
hazardous substance.
• Developed by Paul Anastas and John
Warner in the 1990s.
• Focuses on preventing pollution at the
molecular level.
“Green chemistry is not a luxury; it is a necessity for the
health of our planet and future generations.” – Terry Collins

• Why we need Green Chemistry?
• Bhopal Gas Tragedy:- it is caused due to the
leakage of MIC( Methyl Isocyanides) gas in
pesticides production plant in Bhopal India in
1984. It is a most tragic chemical incident in
the history of mankind.
1.Pollution prevention
2.Protecting human health and the
environment
3.Using renewable energy sources instead of
non renewable energy
4.West minimization at source
5.Design energy efficient and cost
effective process.
6.Producing biodegradable Waste.
7.Improving atom economy of a chemical
synthesis.
8.Protecting human health and environment.
9.Reducing or eliminating generation of
toxic waste and by products.
10.Minimizing accidents like Bhopal gas
tragedy.
5. • Why Green chemistry is called sustainable chemistry?
Sustainability describe as “meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the
ability of future generation to meet they are own needs”
• Aspects in respect of which Green Chemistry can be considered as
sustainable chemistry:-
1. Raw materials:- Unsustainable raw materials are replaced by
replaced by sustainable raw materials to reduce pollution.
pollution.
2. Waste:- Green Chemistry reduces are eliminates formation of waste
formation of waste material in a chemical process to reduce negative
reduce negative impact on human health and environment
environment
3. Green Solvents:- green solvent are used instead of toxic or
toxic or Carcinogenic solvents
4. Minimize hazards:- it designs chemical products and processes to
processes to minimize their intrinsic hazards

6. 6
• Goals of Green chemistry:-
1. Protection of environment from pollution:-
Green Chemistry aims to make the chemical
products with the expectation that any type of
chemical hazards can somehow be avoided.
2. synthesis of eco friendly or biodegradable
products:- example are the synthesis of new
pesticides which is only toxic to the target
Species and it Readily degrades into safer
Products.
3. Consumption of minimum energy:- ideally the
chemical synthesis should be carried out at
ambient temperature and pressure to minimize
energy consumption.
• Principal of 4R in IWM( integrated Waste
management):-
8. • Green solvents in organic synthesis:-
8
• Green solvent are the environmental friendly
solvents or bio solvents which are derived from
the processing of agriculture crops.
Examples; Water, PEG, Ethyl Lactate, etc …
• Criteria of green
solvents:-
1. Low Vapour Pressure.
2. High boiling point.
3. Non toxic and non
carcinogenic.
4. Non volatility
5. Non flammability.
6. Good dissolving
ability.
7. Recyclability.
9. 9
• Green synthesis of some organic compounds:-
• Green synthesis of Adipic
acid:-
• Green synthesis of di-sodium imino
diacetate(DSIDA):-
10. 10
• Future trends in Green chemistry:-
1. Directed evolution- Green chemistry
and bio catalyst.
2. New developments in degradable and
recycled polymers.
3. Polymers from carbon dioxide.
4. Green chemistry and oil based paints.
5. Green and renewable energy sources.
6. Greener electrochemical storage
system.
11. 11
• Limitations or obstacles of Green chemistry:-
Now most people are not asking, “whether
Green Chemistry or not?” but people are
asking ‘how can you implement Green
Chemistry?’ these means the relevance of
Green chemistry is no longer question.
• Some Limitations are:-
1. Green chemistry is costly and complex.
2. Problem of availability of green
technology.
3. Lack of knowledge about alternative feed
stock.
4. Lack of information about upper limit of
toxicity carcinogenicity of various
chemical pollutants.
5. Lack of certified reference materials.
6. Communication gap between the industry and
green chemical solution providers.
7. Regulatory hurdles.
12. 12
-: Conclusion:-
Green Chemistry not a
solution to all
environmental problems
but the most
fundamental approach
to preventing
pollution.
Let’s work together to
Catalyze positive change
and make the world a
greener place through
responsible chemistry.
