This document discusses the challenges of improving hand hygiene compliance in healthcare settings. It notes that while hand washing is clearly important before surgery, it can be more difficult to maintain attentiveness in other situations like patient rounds. To improve compliance, strong leadership that prioritizes hand hygiene and uses secret shopper data collection to monitor compliance monthly can help drive rates above 95% and potentially reduce infection rates, as seen at one hospital. A few other international programs aimed at hand hygiene are also cited.
