Design as visual communication (lecture on), TAW 2012Fabio Arangio
What makes design distinctive is the ability to build a visual structure so that we can predict the user’s experience of a product. That is made possible because design is an act of communication, a visual communication that speaks straight to our innate ability to comprehend symbols as meanings through shapes, colors, proportions and alignments in a given space.

Quality graphic and web design are crucial to promoting, branding, and raising awareness of your library and its valuable services, but it’s an expensive skill to hire out. Many libraries are taking on these challenges themselves, and assisted with a variety of free or cheap online design tools, are creating websites, logos, banners, and other graphic elements for their print or online resources. This session will help those involved in creating and maintaining these to understand the principles of making appealing and effective visual materials for their libraries and services.
A lecture that explores the notion of designing experiences from a graphic design perspective. Useful for anyone who is keen to investigate this theme.

Graphic designers work with drawn, painted, photographed, or computer-generated images, but they also design the letterforms that make up various typefaces found in movie credits and TV ads; in books, magazines, and menus; and even on computer screens.
Designers create, choose, and organize these elements—typography, images, and the so-called “white space” around them—to communicate a message.
Graphic design is a part of your daily life. From humble things like gum wrappers to huge things like billboards, to the T-shirt you’re wearing, graphic design informs, persuades, organizes, stimulates, locates, identifies, attracts attention and provides pleasure.
Graphic design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas. The designer works with a variety of communication tools in order to convey a message from a client to a specific audience. The main tools are image and typography.
Suppose you want to announce or sell something, inform or persuade someone, explain a complicated system or demonstrate a process. In other words, you have a message you want to communicate. How do you “send” it? You could tell people one by one or broadcast by radio or loudspeaker. That’s verbal communication.
But if you use any visual medium at all—if you make a poster; type a letter; create
a business logo, a magazine ad, or an album cover; even make a computer printout—
you are using a form of visual communication called graphic design.
Designers develop images to represent the ideas their clients want to communicate. Images can be incredibly powerful and compelling tools of communication, conveying not only information but also moods and emotions. People respond to images instinctively based on their personalities, associations, and previous experience.
For example, you know that a chili pepper is hot, and this knowledge in combination with the image creates a visual pun.
In the case of image-based design, the images must carry the entire message; there are few if any words to help. These images may be photographic, painted, drawn, or graphically rendered in many different ways. Image-based design is employed when
the designer determines that, in a particular case, a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.

Designers that specialize in visual identity graphic design collaborate with brand stakeholders to create assets like logos, typography, color palettes and image libraries that represent a brand’s personality. In addition to the standard business cards and corporate stationary, designers often develop a set of visual brand guidelines (style guides) that describe best practices and provide examples of visual branding applied across various media. These guidelines help to ensure brand consistency throughout future applications.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Type-Based Design
In some cases, designers rely on words to convey a message,
but they use words differently from the ways writers do. To
designers, what the words look like is as important as their
meaning.
The visual forms, whether typography, (communication
designed by means of the printed word) or handmade lettering,
perform many communication functions. They can arrest your
attention on a poster, identify the product name on a package
or a truck, and present running text as the typography in a

Image And Type
Designers often combine images and typography to
communicate a client’s message to an audience.
They explore the creative possibilities presented by words
(typography) and images (photography, illustration, and fine
art).
It is up to the designer not only to find or create appropriate
letterforms and images but also to establish the best
balance between them.
71.
72.
73.
74. Write the following definition:
Symbols and Logos
Symbols and logos are special, highly condensed information
forms or identifiers. Symbols are abstract representation of a
particular idea or identity.
75. The CBS “eye” and the Nike “Swoosh” are symbolic forms,
which we learn to recognize as representing a particular
concept or company.
When Phil Knight started Nike, he was hoping to find a mark
as recognizable as the Adidas stripes, which also provided
reinforcement to the shoe. He hired a young student (Carolyn
Davidson) to design his logo, paying her $35 for what has
become one of the best known marks in the world (she was
later compensated again by the company).
76. Write the following definition:
Logotypes
Logotypes are corporate identifications based on a special
typographical word treatment. (No symbols are involved,
just type.)
77. Write the following definition:
Logotype Hybrids
Some identifiers are hybrid, or combinations of symbol and
logotype. In order to create these identifiers, the designer
must have a clear vision of the corporation or idea to be
represented and of the audience to which the message is
directed.
78. An interesting case is the refinement of the FedEx
logo, where the brand consultants convinced the
company to shorten their corporate name and logo
from "Federal Express" to the popular abbreviation
"Fed Ex". Besides creating a shorter brand name,
they reduced the amount of color used on vehicles
(planes, trucks) and saved hundreds of thousands of
dollars in paint costs. Also, the right pointing arrow in
the new logo is a subliminal hint of motion.
