GLOBALIZATION
Interdependence: dynamic of being mutually responsible to and sharing a common set of principles with others. ie. Advances in technology, Global Village, the need for everyday items
Interconnectedness: To be involved with each other , often in very complex ways ie. water cycle, oxygen cycle, food chain
What is Globalization? The trend toward greater interconnectedness of the world’s systems. It can be described as a process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and function together.
What does Globalization mean? To some it means: A global village where everyone is linked by the latest advances in technology The reason a local factory shuts down only to reopen thousands of kilometers away (why?) Destruction of local cultures and weakening of traditional beliefs Why do views vary so greatly?
Globalization is an ongoing, evolving process. Its ultimate impacts are as of yet unclear. There is NOT one form of globalization. Each will occur separately or in combination with another.
Financial Globalization World ‘s financial systems are intimately interconnected – affect each other in a wave pattern New York Tokyo & Hong Kong Europe New York
Economic Globalization Past = corporation in 1 country Present = integrated operation around the world Support = efficiency and greater global wealth Opposed = only increases the difference between country’s, creates more power and influence
Cultural Globalization Gradual harmonization of cultures instead of distinct local cultures Ie. Someone in India eating a donair and watching the Simpsons on HD TV Opposed - world culture = American culture
Technological Globalization Global Village = Technological Globalization Process not a destination
Political Globalization Adoption of uniform policies Ie. NATO (Canada, USA and Mexico)
Ecological Globalization Single ecosystem working together Ozone depletion = Montreal Protocol - Treaty to reduce the amount of ozone depletion in the atmosphere Global warming = Kyoto Protocol - Treaty to address the amount of CO₂ entering the atmosphere
Sociological Globalization Members of a single world society rather than individual and distinct nations Common attitudes and behaviors - morality of capital punishment - role of women in society - sexual orientation - right to practice religion
Geographical Globalization Past = world in terms of 1 country (borders) Present = borderless world with many relationships
