something that interests me, because there are always two sides to a story but you
can only support one side and do your best to make sure it is the one that wins. One
reason why I have always had a passion for the law is because living in Egypt you
get to see how corrupt things can get, and I believe this is part of why I am who I
am today, since experiencing this made me become a very confident person
knowing when and how to stand up for myself and not stop until I achieve what I

changed from the time he went to boot camp until the end of his combat

Growing up, Spanish and English were spoken at home. My mom never pushed a
language on me; she more often than not just reflected what language I was
speaking. From a young age, I developed an affinity for speaking English. I was
hearing it in the classroom and around my neighborhood and I began to associate
Spanish with shame and otherness. I strove to speak more and more English at
home. My mother would speak to me in Spanish and I would solely respond in

speak Spanish in my childhood was one of my main connections to my culture. I

On the eve of my fifth birthday, my mother was rushed to the hospital for an
emergency C section. On this night, my sister was born two and a half months
premature with a gastrointestinal blockage that sent her straight to the operating
room and kept her in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for over three months.
Unfortunately, I only had the opportunity to visit my sister a handful of times; my
parents adamantly claimed the hospitalwas no place for kids . The fact that the
hospital was off limits to me peaked my curiosity about what transpired behind the
closed doors. I yearned to understand the roles the doctors and nurses played in
helping my sister come home. I also longed to see my parents smile and converse

The three centers (LSC Fairbanks, LSC Greenspoint, LSC Victory) had a total
headcount of 5,764 in fall 2016. The largest majority of the enrollments were face
to face (67%), followed by online (28%), and hybrid (5%). Academic transfer
courses accounted for 97% of the total credit offerings. All three centers suffered a
combined decrease of 8.4% from fall 2014 to fall 2016. There are various factors,

Reflection Of Fortress Bank
This summer, I had the pleasure of interning at Fortress Bank, previously known as
First State Bank of Illinois, at the branch in Monmouth Illinois. The internship
surrounded topics that correlated with my international business degree. I gained first
hand experience with everything from financial regulations to loans. It was
wonderful to be able to take concepts outside of the classroom and see how they are
applicable within the international business world, specifically the world of banking.
The company Fortress Bank, previously known as First State Bank of Illinois 10
branches. Branches are located in Monmouth, Macomb, LaHarpe, Peoria, Carthage,
Hamilton, Pekin, Blandinsville, Colusa, and Bettendorf. The company has been
privately owned since its inception in 1904. The bank recently underwent
monumental rebranding as the name of the bank changed in order to allow for the
new Bettendorf branch opening in early 2018 in Eastern Iowa. The name First State
Bank simply was not going to be applicable to future Iowan customers. The name
change was purely cosmetic and has had no change on any other aspects of the
business. Everything from the bank s routing number to phone number has stayed
the same. Customers will simply be receiving updated checks and debit cards with
the name Fortress Bank when they run out of checks or their debit cards expire. Until
then, everything with the name First State Bank of Illinois will still be applicable.

In early August of 1997 the United Parcel Service (UPS) had a predicament on its
hands, a teamsters strike. UPS, the world s largest package distribution company
was coming off a year [1996] in which they reported sales of $22.4 billion. UPS
Employed 75,000 management and non union employees compared with 185,000
teamsters who are part of the AFL CIO that were going on strike. The teamsters
rejected a contract extension offer from the company leaving the fate of millions of
packages carrying everything from lobsters to laser printers up in the air (Johnson).
Tensions between union supporters and management began mounting in the years

UPS proposed a plan that would increase the monthly pension benefits for full and
part time employees an average of 50 percent. The current pension plan benefited
thousands of teamsters retirees that never even worked for UPS . Basically, UPS
wanted UPS dollars to go to UPS people (UPS vs Teamsters). Before the strike, in
many regions UPS participated in multi employer benefit plans in which several
shipping employers jointly pay for employee benefits. If one employer goes out of
business or gets behind on payments, the other employers must compensate for the
loss. This explains why it is said that UPS pays for the retirement and benefits of
people that never worked for them (Business News New Jersey).
Another issue in negotiations was full time versus part time positions. UPS
employees argued that too many workers were working 35 45 hours a week, often at
two different jobs, for part time pay. Having about two thirds of all teamsters being
part time this was a central issue. They wanted these part time positions to be
converted into full time positions. UPS claimed that it did not want to guarantee full
time positions because of fluctuations in work and wants flexibility for competitive
reasons (UPS vs Teamsters). Along with full time positions and the pension
arguments, strikers wanted limits on giving work to subcontractors, and health and
safety improvements.
